- jacobed, on 10/11/2007, -0/+31In spite of the article, I've got my fingers crossed for this one. Honestly, this show gave me the most satisfying TV laughs I've had in ages.
- notmark, on 10/11/2007, -0/+25The show has something in its favor, though: it's on HBO, which means that it'll get a longer leash (presumably) than shows on network TV. It seems like the kind of show that takes a dozen episodes to gain an audience, but it'll have a better chance to grow than something on FOX or CBS.
- hbweb500, on 10/11/2007, -0/+21I like this sort of comedy. Comedians such as Flight of the Conchords and Demetri Martin are what I like to call "educated humor." These are guys who went to Yale and dropped out in order to tell jokes (true with Demetri).
- maracle2, on 10/11/2007, -5/+17He brings up interesting points, also the show is alot like the Tenacious D, which failed also
- thegoodsteer, on 10/11/2007, -0/+12This show will not fail, because the humans will be dead by the year 2000.
- dykast, on 10/11/2007, -0/+12I think I watched the One Night Stand 20 times. The first episode of the show was great and just shows how talented these guys are. The problem is, it's an acquired taste. I loved Lucky Louie and that was an acquired taste as well. But this show is way more "out there" then even Lucky Louie. Lets just hope it catches on!
A side note...
It looks like all the filming takes place in Brooklyn. Maybe Williamsburg. Not in Manhattan.
Chime in if anyone knows. - illegalamigo, on 10/11/2007, -1/+111. Title isn't that confusing. It could have been explained in one sentence. For instance: Kiwi guitar-playing/comedy duo Jermaine Clement and Bret McKenzie play themselves as they search for their break in the New York City music scene.
2. Low Key Humor? Have you heard of The Office?
3. Little to no attachment to characters? Is it because it's the first episode? Who gave a rat's about Seinfeld after the first show, but after however many seasons people love it!
4. People...might like musicals?
1/4 ain't bad. - xrisnothing, on 10/11/2007, -4/+12Yeah, Tenacious D failed...
If my memory serves me, Tenacious D started out on Mr. Show and was so popular that they started their own show. The hype got so big that MTV began airing their videos and radio stations began playing their songs. The whole thing launched Jack Black's career in the film industry and the duo even produced their own film, even if poorly received. It seems to me like Tenacious D was incredibly successful. - Angel511J, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9I disagree. This was one of the more charming and funny shows I've seen in a long time. Binary solo?!?! Amazing.
- Tabou, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8I'm still pissed they canceled Lucky Louie.
- Spandia, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8Most laughs I've had in a while.
- fuzzboxer, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6This is not necessarily true. Lucky Louie was cancelled after it's first 13-episode season even though it was on HBO.
Flight of the Conchords is great and I hope it stays on the air. - Cowfrommars, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6What do intelligence and humour have in common? They are both not native to kenvsryu. You suck.
- ff3j, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6http://www.hbo.com/conchords/video/index.html
gotta click complete first episode on the right
hilarious so far, but we'll see how the rest of the season goes - capotesan, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4If you're complaining that the songs were too long then you didn't listen. They're hilarious.
- Yupp, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5I saw them in NYC and they killed. Very funny stuff. The best part is when they're just interacting together between songs. There is tremendous chemistry there that doesn't completely make it to the screen..yet. As far as the musical numbers, I've seen a performances live and on the web and HBO, and am wondering-- won't they run out of songs soon? They had 3 songs in the first show alone.
Anyway, I'll watch it as long as it's on. Remember Conchords fans, it's HBO! Don't stop - whiterussian, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4I don't think Tenacious D themselves were ever really on Mr. Show. Jack Black was in a few episodes but the D never actually performed on it. However, Bob Odenkirk and David Cross were producers and writers on the Tenacious D show and Troy Miller who directed all the Mr. Show episodes directed Tenacious D, so there was definitely a similar vibe. But yeah, I definitely wouldn't say they failed. Jack Black is now a superstar and Tenacious D seemed to be about as popular as a comedy rock duo could get. I remember seeing them open for Weezer like 6 years ago on a big arena tour.
- BountyHNZ, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4the guy who wrote the article is clearly retarded.
the prime instrument in 'flight of the conchords' is a guitar, upon which you play chords....flight of the concord....chord...kiwis are a flightless bird (not a fruit, that's a kiwi fruit) concord jets are seeminly flightless as well....
if you dont get that then please dont watch the show, as we dont want you soiling its audience with your useless DNA.
- teh kiwi (again...bird....not fruit) - mattxb, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Ims still glad they're gonna finish the Wire. Flight of the Conchords seems pretty low budget, so I think it would have to do really bad to be canceled.
- jivemasta, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Me too, from what I can tell, the show did decently. By no means as good as some of their other shows though. I saw it as the next seinfeld, where the sitcom is redefined. Since it was on HBO, they could do pretty much anything they want, giving a much better range of jokes and situations to get into. Like putting your kid in a closet and calling her an *****, comedy gold.
- nreynolds, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4the TELEVISION SHOW "Tenacious D" failed. There. fixed it
- slote, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4The coolest thing about the show is the musical element, its a cool different thing that will draw people in. I hope that alone is enough to get that show popular.
- Lane5slacker, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4I've been listening to these guys for a year or so now, love 'em.
New Zealand's fourth most popular folk-parody duo FTW! - lowkeynz, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3jermaine went to auckland uni in new zealand. i was there at the same time. he was head of the comedy club and used to perform quite regularly at lunchtimes around campus :)
- Litespeed, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I think the reviewer would have an aneurysm if he watched some of the other comedy on New Zealand TV. Current examples of this would be "Eating Media Lunch" and "Moon TV". Both are very dry, subtle comedy on a par with "The Office" (the UK version).
- trimpton, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Stupid reasons, its HBO not network television.
- Urusai, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2You know who likes musicals? Bollywood. Throw in some shrill singing and group dancing and they have a contract in Mumbai waiting for them.
- MrSidnet, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2SuperCujo, check out a show called Corner Gas. Filmed in Canada, the show is awesome. 4 seasons already.
Apparently it's become popular in the US too. I guess it's the same type of humour. - I-Train, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Binary Solo!
- coreoption, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I'll buy the DVD regardless. Their very funny "low-key" humor gives me hope for comedy's future.
If they sold them, I'd buy business socks too. - drummerbrother, on 10/11/2007, -3/+5I loved Flight of the Conchords, at least the first episode. It's just so different to all the other crap on television. But yeah, it will probably still fail. UNLESS, they do a remake with American actors and a laugh track and with more obvious jokes. Then it'd be a huge hit! Sadly.
- drmobutu, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2"The Sarah Silverman Show" will probably ultimately "fail" too, but that doesn't mean I didn't enjoy it, while it lasted...seriously, I can't understand why anybody dugg this article. It was lame. Some guy didn't like a TV show...
- TheUnashamed, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I hope this one lasts for a while, the dry but witty humor reminds me of Arrested Development.
- joshtj, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I don't see why shows have to be that successful and run well passed their used-by date A short stint of quality episodes is all that's needed. Many of the UK comedy shows that filter down here (NZ) don't run for very long, but are very funny (Black Books, Love Soup..) Quality should not be synonymous with number of episodes and seasons.
- captscott, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Having listened to the entire UK radio version of this show I can say that this is just another typical example of an American not quite getting subtle humour. It's not always Friends, Fraser, Joey etc you know. Agreed, I find Family Guy absolutely hilarious, to the point where I've almost lost control of my bladder, but you cannot compare the two shows.
- drmobutu, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2lame article.
- iburyfamilyguy, on 03/02/2009, -0/+2I like that the site is out of business and Flight of the Conchords is back for season 2.
- blacklilyninja, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4BEST SHOW EVER!!! !
the singing was hot.
love square lol - PunkRockRalph, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1haha. second season signed. all non-believers declared retards, and will be dealt with accordingly.
- supremebeing18, on 01/29/2008, -0/+1It does pretty well in the US as well, this author is just retarded.
- caselogic, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Didn't fail.
http://www.avclub.com/content/newswire/flight_of_the_conchords - harrysmomma, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Binary solo had me cracking up!!! I still laugh when I think of it. Yes, I'm a nerd and I'm not afraid to say it.
- mattledger, on 05/24/2008, -0/+1I'd never heard of Demetri Martin before but I love Flight of the Chonchords and read your comment so thought I'd check him out ... I've spent the last half hour watching him on YouTube! ... thank you so much!
- 7thton, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Hiphopapotamus
- SuperCujo, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I love that song :)
- andr3, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1It's a masterpiece! You just have to be emerged on the TenD universe to understand the brilliance of it all... :D
- SuperCujo, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Have you heard about threaded comment systems?
They work quite well... no more need to put @***** at the start of your comment. This new fangled technology really scares some people, so don't feel bad. - prkchpsndwiches, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Big fan and I have watched the One night stand about 15 times, but I thought the show was a bit dry. I just hope the rest of the season picks up. It also makes it harder to watch after entourage. Going from quick jab comedy to F of the C.
- kevhonline, on 03/30/2009, -0/+1Damn, this article failed hard.
- celticno6, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I agree with captscott. The average American just doesn't seem to get humour unless its telegraphed three times in the minute preceding the punchline, then delivered with an unsubtle punch in the face.
