- dirtymerkin, on 04/16/2009, -11/+227I'm gonna have to say Tropic Thunder. And that's probably it.
- DouglasQ, on 04/17/2009, -3/+108"Did you know that Obama had to give his acceptance speech behind sheets of bullet proof-glass. It just goes to show how racist America is. I mean, just because he's black, doesn't mean he's gonna shoot anybody" - Frankie Boyle
- DredPir8Robrts, on 04/17/2009, -5/+98Yep, this newscaster definitely went full retard.
- hydroplane, on 04/16/2009, -15/+93everyday
- boozedrinker, on 04/17/2009, -9/+73It's always okay, black people do it ALL the time. Remember the movie White Girls?
- KenSPT, on 04/17/2009, -8/+52This country has a hypocritical double standard when it comes to race-relations.
If a white man goes on TV and makes jokes about black people, or sketch comedy shows do skits about African American stereotypes, or a newscaster says anything that can be construed and twisted as "racially insensitive", they get read the riot act by society as a whole. Yet, when Chris Rock calls people crackers, and sketch shows do racially motivated skits based on Caucasian stereotypes, nobody says a word.
Everyone screams that this country is sometimes unfair to minorities, but sometimes when you cater to minorities you make it unfair to the majority.
How is it right that a qualified white applicant gets turned away for a job, yet a lesser qualified black applicant gets hired because companies need to fill a "quota" in terms of their diversity in hiring? Why is it fair that Colleges turn away hard working qualified white students from admission, yet accept lesser qualified black students, once again to fill a quota?
Our current President has proven that while race may sometimes be a barrier, it's very possible to succeed in this country. He was, literally, the poor black kid who grew up to be President. I didn't vote for the man, and even I think he's got a great story. It's proof that minorities can succeed in this country, despite their race.
Far too many people look to race as an excuse, or a crutch; a reason to justify their lack of success in life, and a bulk of society accepts it. As a 26 year old white American, it's the double standard that I find offensive. - KrustyTClown, on 04/17/2009, -4/+42Why is it that a black comedian can go on stage and rip apart white, asians, hispanics. But if a white was to say the slightest joke about a black person it's
"oh no he didn't" "he can't say that. Lynch this foo"
And no, I'm not white. - LonesomeFighter, on 04/16/2009, -1/+36you do have a race card, and you can always play it.
now if you're white, your race is that, but things never go well when you play it. - morrissey79, on 04/17/2009, -1/+35ask Ted Danson
- AmyVernon, on 04/16/2009, -4/+38If you click through to the youtube video of the Turkish journalist, it has a supposed transcript of what he's saying, and it's interesting, because he addresses the blackface and explains why. It's hard to completely understand, but it's not racist in the way blackface would be here in the States. It's an interesting issue, for sure.
But I do agree with @dirtymerkin that Tropic Thunder's pretty much the only appropriate time. - Lucas123, on 04/16/2009, -6/+36Any vaudeville act or minstrel show would be sorely lacking without black face. Why just the other day... oh, wait, that was 70 years ago. Forget that last comment.
- executex, on 04/17/2009, -2/+29This is way old news. By the way, the guy was doing this out of respect for Obama. In fact, he was using "black face" as a metaphor for how his country's reputation has been damaged by recent political attacks by other countries with different self-interests. He said that his "Dear respected Mr. Obama" will fix the political problems of the future. There was nothing wrong with it.
- drmangrum, on 04/17/2009, -4/+29It's always ok. You can't believe in free speech and also believe something like this is taboo.
We've seen the Wayan's Brothers dress up as white women. Nobody cared.
We've seen Dave Chapelle do his "white face." People laugh.
We've seen Eddie Griffin do white impressions and such in Undercover Brother and his stage act.
Sorry non-whites. You can't have it both ways. If a black guy is gonna lighten his skin to impersonate a white guy with no cultural back lash then the opposite much hold true as well.
And don't you dare bring out the slavery card. There is not a single person alive today whose grand parents even remember slavery. It ended 150 years ago. If Jews and Germans can move on after 60 years, black and white americans can move on after 150 years. - ed4649, on 04/17/2009, -7/+31If it's okay for Chappelle to in whiteface, it's okay to be in blackface.
- travsb, on 04/17/2009, -8/+31its acceptable as long as dave chappelle cna dress up as a white reporter.... nobody cried about that... so quit your crying
- AtomicTheory, on 04/17/2009, -1/+23If Dave Chappelle and Eddy Murphy can do "white face" and it be okay, then anyone can paint their face any color. To say otherwise is just reverse racism.
- inactive, on 04/17/2009, -6/+26The day black people can take a freaking joke.
- drmangrum, on 04/17/2009, -3/+20How about ALWAYS. It's called Free Speech. Something I feel very strongly about. It's time people stop being so overly sensitive. Grow the ***** up.
Nobody cares when someone imitates an Indian clerk in a convenience store.
Nobody cares when someone imitates a middle-eastern man as a terrorist.
Nobody cares when someone imitates a white guy.
It's only when someone imitates a black guy that people get their panties in a bunch. GROW. THE. *****. UP. - SpoonMSU, on 04/17/2009, -0/+15Dude, you never go full retard.
- sinoth, on 04/17/2009, -4/+19i blackface every day i don't give a FUUK
- DouglasQ, on 04/17/2009, -1/+15What the *****?
- nmoulana, on 04/17/2009, -2/+15I think black face is hilarious just like when Chappelle did white face.
- sphigel, on 04/17/2009, -4/+17Was any white person currently alive ever a slave owner?
- jba68, on 04/17/2009, -0/+13Whoopi liked it...
- acklefutz, on 04/17/2009, -5/+17Was any black person currently alive ever a slave?
- serif69, on 04/17/2009, -1/+13You have a turbine? Sweet.
- manosinistra, on 04/17/2009, -5/+17Only race I know I belong to is the human race...
So much attention to differences we forget what we have in common (approx. the remaining 99%) - drouk1556, on 04/17/2009, -0/+10Actually just "National".
- Dumbledorito, on 04/17/2009, -2/+12Comedian Pat Paulson gave a short lecture on ethnic humor: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=04BhAxBNWIo
Needless to say, this never made it to air. - SpoonMSU, on 04/17/2009, -2/+12He's a dude playing a dude disguised as another dude!
- Dumbledorito, on 04/17/2009, -6/+16Satire and humor falls flat when it appears that the powerful are picking on the powerless. This is why a lot of "conservative humor" doesn't work, especially from people like Rush Limbaugh. He doesn't seem to get that a rich white guy making fun of the poor or minorities looks more "clueless villain-esque" than it does "witty stand-up."
- eyepatch100, on 04/17/2009, -3/+12You just sort of have to trust your instincts on that one.
- sat0shi, on 04/17/2009, -2/+11Well, Japan does blackface ANY time they want to portray a black person. Likewise, they always put on a light colored wig and giant white nose whenever they want to portray a white/European person. At least they're equally racist!
- Mackofalltrades, on 04/17/2009, -0/+9Really? I think BET makes more fun of black people than anything.
*coming from a black person* - ventralnet, on 04/17/2009, -6/+15That isn't blackface... man you guys are racist
- gttim, on 04/17/2009, -3/+12This whole political correctness crap has really ruined the demand for my Dianna Ross imitation and drag show. Now I can really only do Liza Minnelli, and she isn't nearly as much fun!
- Kotoyumu, on 04/17/2009, -0/+8Uncle Ruckus wouldn't approve
- donnytomas, on 04/17/2009, -2/+10When you smokin' some rocks.
- manosinistra, on 04/17/2009, -0/+7It means 13% difference within that 5 % bracket.
Precisely 0.65 % of our total DNA.
Basically any and all of our differences as humans are contained in less than 1% of our total DNA.
Some ppl should actually slow down whilst reading. - inactive, on 04/17/2009, -0/+7That's the only thing it's used for.
- billricardi, on 04/17/2009, -0/+7Classic. Pat was was ahead of his time. He was a comedian's comedian, under-rated by the public but busting up everyone else on the circuits. A lot like Gilbert Gottfried does today.
Pat Paulson (Rest In Peace) For President:
"I've upped my standards. Now, up yours." - badqat, on 04/17/2009, -5/+12How cute...you aren't smart enough to click on the audio link, are you? You realize the "R" in NPR stands for radio, no? You realize the "article" is a radio broadcast, not the two paragraphs introducing it, right?
- Nore, on 04/17/2009, -2/+9This isn't 1900. There is a black president currently in office. Get real.
P.S. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_Chicks - Nore, on 04/17/2009, -3/+9Thanks to the first amendment, every single damn day
- inactive, on 04/17/2009, -3/+9If its for comedy, then I say its ok.
- vulapine, on 04/17/2009, -2/+8se1zure
I don't know where to begint o tell you what is wrong with your comment, but you seem to be too unfamiliar with BET programming and content to comment on the station. - DrVic, on 04/17/2009, -3/+9^
If they had it in their capability to do it, you bet your ass they would have. Don't be all QQ because black people got pwned. - battleroyalex, on 04/17/2009, -5/+11ROFL @ the fact its not from the onion.com
- chessthecat, on 04/17/2009, -2/+8This case looks to be one where it's okay. Makeup looked great. Good timing too. I'll have to say this is a legit time to use it.
- Dumbledorito, on 04/17/2009, -0/+6George Carlin was able to "get away with" a lot of ethnic humor, but that was because he wasn't mean about it, he had the cred of having grown up with a host of minorities in New York, and he was part of (at the time) a minority as a member of the counter culture.
Context does play a huge role. Perhaps another example is Garrison Keillor, a humorist whose show ("A Prairie Home Companion") pokes fun at religion in a way that not a lot of other shows could. It's good-natured and midwestern in tone, and it doesn't decry faith so much as find the humor in the interrelations between Catholics, Lutherans, Unitarians, etc. -
