I've been following the program this season, and I have to admit that all of the current contestants have some level of talent. Usually websites like this one only thrive when a bunch of blatantly talentless people (like Sanjaya) stay in the competition. This year all of the really bad people have been voted off by now.

1. Fills up time
2. Lets you talk with whoever you are watching it with about how awful/good the contestants are, who you wish would win, etc...

Are you not capable of a conversation with a cathode ray tube illuminating the room? Why must you rely on someone's failings (or winnings) to produce content for a conversation? Why not ask the person you're with about themselves or talk about your own successes and failures? Sadly, it sounds like you really do need to fill up time.

Similar to what I said about item 2, why do you need a television show to produce conversational content? Do you really have nothing else to talk about? And if you don't, why are you talking at all?

I can only judge what he told us. His exact words were that he watches it to fill up time and to give him something to talk about with other people. Sounds pretty sad and pointless to me. Besides, why would you intentionally push the bad singers through? Each position someone advances gives them that much more chance of getting a record contract, even if they don't win the show. Im all for finding good talent, but isnt the market getting a little crowded? Perhaps they can afford to lose one or two. I personally liked Taylor Hicks, but he's about all so far. This season is pretty much pathetic.
BTW, I have to say, the show is a success because people do watch it.
