- scooterbaga, on 06/20/2008, -1/+127That's funny, the commercials seem short and silent to me... While I'm skipping them with my TiVo.
- inactive, on 06/20/2008, -3/+113The loud TV ad has been a staple for advertisers for over 20 years. Why stop now? I SAID, WHY STOP NOW?
- Cryptocracy, on 08/17/2008, -26/+100I solved this problem last year, just say NO to TV. TV is a mind-numbing waste of time. I hate TV.
- inactive, on 06/21/2008, -1/+51IT'LL EVEN CLEAN UP THIS BLOOD SOAKED MATTRESS!
- BigManOnCampus, on 06/20/2008, -0/+40AND THAT'S NOT ALL!!
- BigManOnCampus, on 06/20/2008, -10/+49Why do we need legislation for this?
People should vote with their dollars. - Restrikted, on 06/21/2008, -8/+45First off, Dolby Volume is coming out which will inhibit that. Second, is this really a productive way to spend our tax dollars? I mean, we are fighting a ~$2 billion dollar war, Bush is being accused of warcrimes, our healthcare system sucks, is the volume of our TV's really a top priority?
- allthosemoments, on 06/21/2008, -13/+49I agree it is annoying, but is it really necessary for a bill to deal with it?
- inactive, on 06/20/2008, -4/+37Great article, certainly worth sharing.....
- pseudojd, on 06/21/2008, -8/+39While I am all for networks keeping the volume of ads at the same volume as the show i'm watching, I am COMPLETELY against legislation to enforce this. What a complete waste of my government.
- Neiliosullivan, on 06/21/2008, -0/+28TNT is one of the worst offenders. To hear the shows I have to turn the volume nearly all the way up then when a commercial comes on it rattles my windows.
- CoolHandLuke70, on 06/20/2008, -7/+34I am for this even when I refuse to watch TV ever again!
- granolajoe, on 06/20/2008, -0/+26I f***ing hate volume spikes. I try to keep commercials on mute as much as possible. I wish there was a way to program a device to catch when a commercial starts and ends to do it for me.
- lucy22, on 06/20/2008, -0/+26I have the mute button ready when I'm watching something. The minute the commericial comes on, I hit mute. They are all loud and annoying. I have started to rent alot of dvd's instead, but I still like to watch the news.
- petard, on 06/21/2008, -8/+32How can you vote with your dollar? The TV stations get paid by the advertisers, we aren't paying anything.
- kevinwiz, on 06/21/2008, -0/+23IF YOU CALL IN THE NEXT 20 MINUTES...
- cuevas4711, on 06/21/2008, -3/+25They should make it so all channels are the same, its annoying having to change the volume when i change the channel.
You know you live an easy life when this is something you care about... - StabmasterArson, on 06/21/2008, -0/+20Glad to see Senator Wicker has the testicular fortitude to introduce such thoughtful and relevant legislation at a time when our country is being viciously assaulted by volume from those nefarious advertising cartels.

zybch is right (although the capitalised words seem unnecessary). There are laws about the peak volume levels you're allowed, so to make themselves seem 'louder' the audio in adverts is massively compressed. This is nothing to do with data compression (e.g. MP3). The dynamic range (the distance between the loudest and quietest volume levels) is squashed into a very small range, then make-up gain is appplied so that all the audio ends up _just_ below the maximum level allowed. - inactive, on 06/21/2008, -0/+17I'LL INCLUDE A SECOND BOTTLE OF *****, ABSOLUTELY FREE!
- pcghost, on 06/21/2008, -3/+19Well since Congress seems totally inept at fixing any of the other (more valid) problems you mentioned, I guess it would at least be SOMETHING we could get out of our useless federal government during this misadministration. God I wish I was being sarcastic.
- t0ny, on 06/21/2008, -1/+16I love mythtv all I got to do is hit Z :).
- Danofdeath, on 06/21/2008, -3/+17Yay, more pointless laws! How will this be enforced? How will this be tested? How much will this cost taxpayers?
- LizNovack, on 06/20/2008, -0/+13what would we do without tivo? misery.
- jefree, on 06/21/2008, -1/+13I wonder if the television industry realizes how myself and there must be others have become so sick of repetitive, annoying and loud commercials ruins the experience and drives viewers away. Ever since netflicks and other options without commercials I've stopped watching commercialized television. I don't want my brainspace filled with junk and manipulated. I like to think I'm immune to advertising but I doubt I really am and so for all these reasons I just will not watch television except for very specific exceptions. There's got to be a better business model. I'm willing to pay more for much less commercialization. How much more is the question I suppose, but if I could watch a show for 50ยข or maybe a $1 (a show I want to really watch) with no commercials then I think I would tune back in.
- Asvetic, on 06/21/2008, -1/+12I'm mad as hell, and I'm not going to take it anymore. I SAID I'M MAD A... hold on, I have to turn my TV down.
- wiggimt, on 06/21/2008, -0/+10THAT'S RIGHT, WE'LL ***** YOUR WIFE!
- encrypter, on 06/21/2008, -0/+10BUT THAT'S NOT ALL...CALL IN THE NEXT TEN MINUTES AND WE'LL DOUBLE YOUR ORDER OF *****, ABSOLUTELY FREE!
- InfiniteNothing, on 06/21/2008, -0/+10You know, if they weren't so loud, I might not have a reminder to skip past them.
- Calcularius, on 06/21/2008, -0/+9It's called a WEAPON of MASS DISTRACTION.
- Surferess, on 06/20/2008, -1/+9The technology is available, I believe. They just haven't implemented it because it would cut off their ad revenue.
- TheKorn2, on 06/21/2008, -0/+8Just turn on auto commercial skipping -- works GREAT! I play something, and I just put the remote *down* and don't pick it up again until the end. No loud commercials, ever. (OK, once in a while myth will miss a commercial break, but that's far and few between.)
- gurudrew, on 06/21/2008, -0/+8Magnavox used to make a TV that automatically lowered the volume by half when a commercial came on. "Someone" made them stop.
- MrSparkle666, on 06/21/2008, -4/+12This is exactly the kind of "big government" overlegislation that conservative republicans should be against. Do we have to make FEDERAL laws banning every little thing we don't like? Senator Wicker R-Miss. should be ashamed of himself for clogging up government with such a pointless nonsense bill during a time of war and economic crisis. I am disgusted.
- Roget, on 06/21/2008, -0/+7Wacky Waving Inflatable Arm Flailing Tube Man!
(testify in church!) - TheKorn2, on 06/21/2008, -1/+8The volume of my tv is a ****load higher priority to me than bombing iran/iraq is!
- mojoel, on 06/21/2008, -0/+7And for a limited time you can get my free spray on beard!
- NekoIan, on 06/21/2008, -1/+8Commercials?
- Hockey13, on 06/21/2008, -10/+17This is the dumbest thing I've read all day. Do we really need Congress to control this? I rarely see volume-spikes in commercials, and whenever I do, I make a mental note of it and frequent that channel less. The description of this story even says this:
"Excessively loud television commercials are annoying and drive families away from quality programming.."
It's hard to wrap my mind around the stupidity of this guy's next sentence:
"This bill is a common sense approach to a problem that plagues individuals across the nation and will create a more enjoyable television experience. As a member of the Commerce Committee, I look forward to working with my colleagues to make this legislation a reality"
He should have said:
"So if you're a company stupid enough to not control the volume of your commercials, enjoy the customer desertion, morons."
Why do we HAVE to look to the government every time we see something we don't like? I feel like I'm taking crazy pills. - ThatEvilGuy, on 06/21/2008, -2/+9That's odd cause I did the same thing last year too.
I just don't feel like going around by the schedule of some box(hurrying home so I can watch some movie, or some game) and there is nothing interesting ever on.
Plus here in Ireland, we have to pay TAX for owning a TV, ***** that *****. - Phil8, on 06/21/2008, -0/+6http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j9EOjizFxFA
- inactive, on 06/21/2008, -1/+7convenient, since PBS doesn't suffer from loud ads.
- alpharaptor, on 06/21/2008, -0/+6i hate the volume spikes in some movies too, for half of the movie they murmur then the ***** actions scenes deafen me
- kuantan97, on 06/21/2008, -1/+7Congress saves the free world once more. Here's another suggestion: it's called the mute button. Works like a charm.
- darkwing81, on 06/21/2008, -1/+7Discovery Channel was good when they had interesting scientific stuff on there. they are starting to get more and more "reality" type shows now
- ricepudd, on 06/21/2008, -1/+7Yeah, cos we all know Digg isn't a mind-numbing waste of time...
- Calcularius, on 06/21/2008, -0/+6I appreciate the commercials being loud. It reminds me to turn the sound completely off when I forget.
Thank you advertisers for giving me a volume cue to shut you off. - savantidiot, on 06/21/2008, -0/+6Trillion. You meant ~$2 trillion dollar war.
I think my favorite illustration of the enormity of large figures is using seconds.
1 billion seconds = how many days? weeks? months?
1 billion seconds = ~32 years
1 trillion seconds = ~31,700 years
Clearly getting a firm grasp of the volume of tv commercials is of critical importance to the American society, because it is going to be a LONG time before the country can afford to go out for a night on the town again. -
