To be funny, you have to believe that they're really doing what they seem to be doing in the show. When they go too far (ie once kidnapping Kenny's mom) it's obviously staged. It's not funny when you know it's all staged.

The show lost its edge when it was clear there was no real game going on, and the punishments were just as scripted. It's been reduced to low-impact pro wrestling.
