It is not sick, or bad, or even new. It really shouldn't be a big deal at all. I personally feel the same way ptyforlif feels, as long as people are behaving properly in public, why should anyone care.
The biggest problem TG people face is acceptance. They simply want to be themselves and express themselves, and that self is deemed "wrong" by society as it doesn't fall into a "norm."
The persistent lack of understanding regarding the spectrum that is gender makes me fear for my MTF TG child. When she was turning eight, she campaigned my husband and I not to buy presents in advance, but to go shopping on the day. Her objective was to obtain a real girl's wardrobe. We had always provided lots of dress-up clothes, but, following the standard advice, had insisted she dress as a boy in the world. But she changed our minds that day. Since then - she turns 10 in a few months - she has dressed as a girl and asks that we refer to her as a girl.
I love her so much. She's such a great kid, extremely intelligent, witty, insightful, and creative. She is a remarkable child, but already I see her attitudes being warped by the lack of acceptance she feels. The teasing and mean comments when the adults backs are turned. She doesn't talk about this, but another child at her school actually had to courage to tell her parents about it, as this child was disturbed by the sly bullying she was witnessing and the fact that my child, not the bullies, was often the one in trouble for reacting to the bullies. We do our best to keep the nasty stuff to a minimum, but we can't keep her in a bubble, either. Like most children, she craves the company of other children. My husband and I can only do our best to protect her and let her know that she is a wonderful person, and hope that by the time she's an adult, she'll be accepted for who she is. - MattTurner, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I truly believe they were born this way. I'm sure they would love to be normal. It look like they are really struggle with this disease.
- ptyforlif, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Regardless whether they are born this way or by choice later on in their lives, the society and the world have to learn this reality. Just like gay and lesbian, transgender people are everywhere and at every age. Before the Internet age, we are all closeted. Being a MTF TG myself growing up in the 80s, I though I was different and accepted the fact that the world wouldn't accept me. However, the world has changed. I've developed this thought: as long as I dress and behave properly in public, why do I have to cut my dick off in order to enjoy myself being a woman publicly? I feel sorry for those kids they have to go through those HRT and SRS things. These things are not pleasant and irreversable, especially SRS. IT'S TIME FOR THE WORLD TO CHANGE. Regardless we have a penis or vagina, we ought to be able to freely enjoy whatever we are pleased.

I question whether these kids would think this without prodding.
