- danharlow, on 07/04/2008, -3/+280Give these guys whatever they want ... they are the best thing on television. Christ, it would be like the Beatles breaking up if they split the show up.
- suppazone, on 07/04/2008, -1/+198Way to make headlines - the article actually ends with a comment from May himself:
"The only reason I haven't signed my contract yet is because it has not yet been finalised," he told The Daily Telegraph. "The current one doesn't expire until the end of July. I'm sure a new one will be sorted out soon.- I'm not stomping around about Jeremy's contract with BBC Worldwide. Quite frankly, I couldn't give a **** about it." - rob02190, on 07/04/2008, -8/+151I hope that they don't, without them the show would loose it's wit and humor.
- Pauli92, on 07/05/2008, -13/+82And a ***** American version is coming out with none of the British team, if this happens the true Top Gear will be dead!
- BuzzLightyear, on 07/05/2008, -0/+56"thrown into doubt" my arse.
James May and Richard Hammond would like more money, and this is part of the game to get it. - Toxidote, on 07/05/2008, -0/+49People are wrong to think that Top Gear is all about Clarkson, each presenter has their own role on the show, and they are all unique, thats what makes Top Gear the best car show around. Three guys having fun and talking about cars. The presenters have said themselves that the show is about having fun with cars. LONG LIVE TOP GEAR!
- jamie191817, on 07/05/2008, -0/+43James May is a legend, he's gotta be five times more manly than me, and i consider myself to be pretty manly.
- MacroDaemon, on 07/05/2008, -0/+42While I love the way Jeremy hosts the show, he can't carry it alone. It's a three man opus, and without any one element it wouldn't be close to as good as it is now. The best evidence for this is season one, where Jason Dawe was in the position May is now.
- waydee, on 07/05/2008, -1/+34If the BBC stopped producing such crap programming (rehashed 'Come Dancing' series', poor channel 4 comedy imitations, daytime gameshows) and concentrated on the good programs they've already got like Top Gear there wouldn't be a problem giving James and Richard a decent wage - of course they should be getting the same as Jeremy.
Top Gear is the only reason I finally paid my license fee and stopped being a dirty dodging student. Theres literally nothing else on the beeb apart from the news that I watch. - mickstephenson, on 07/05/2008, -0/+32No one is forcing you to watch. I hate all the soaps you probably adore, but I don't want to ruin someone else's good time..
- inactive, on 07/05/2008, -3/+31You'd need some insane asian woman that shreeks like an injured turkey being included in the show because she dates one of the two for that analogy to be correct.
Hammond: "Welcome to top gear"
Yoko: "BYAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!!!! Let's review kazoos today! BYAAAAAAAAAH!!! Whistle, CLAP, SHREEEEEEEK!" - soupr, on 07/05/2008, -4/+32CODE RED
- raej, on 07/05/2008, -1/+28...and the preview image is 100% related to the title of this post
- max1018, on 07/05/2008, -0/+26The BBC is funded by the license fee that people in the UK pay ever year to watch TV, because the BBC doesn't do ad's etc.
More info http://www.tvlicensing.co.uk/index.jsp - mickstephenson, on 07/05/2008, -1/+26No, I remember a US version of Scrapheap Challenge which was called Junkyard Wars though.
- KMartSheriff, on 07/05/2008, -1/+25Did anyone actually read the article?
At the end they have May quoted saying:
"The only reason I haven't signed my contract yet is because it has not yet been finalised," he told The Daily Telegraph. "The current one doesn't expire until the end of July. I'm sure a new one will be sorted out soon.- I'm not stomping around about Jeremy's contract with BBC Worldwide. Quite frankly, I couldn't give a **** about it."
Sensationalist *****. Buried. - MadOgre, on 07/05/2008, -0/+24Shhhh... that's who THE STIG is.
- CrazyChair, on 07/21/2008, -0/+23Hahaha, dead on Yoko impression. Give that man the $10,000.
Also, give Hamster and Captain Slow whatever they want. You can never replace them. - mahoutie, on 07/05/2008, -1/+21Can't see this happening. The BBC would be foolish not to give them what they want.
- btschul, on 07/05/2008, -5/+24Hmmm.. well at least jeremy clarkson is staying. The show would be unwatchable if all three guys left.
- fafster, on 07/05/2008, -2/+20It's because they're British and not American. The British public is less prone to embarrassing outbursts.
- ByteGuerilla, on 07/05/2008, -0/+18Dugg, but I do think May is an essential part of the dynamic to be honest. Most of the laughs come directly from Hammond and Clarkson, but I'm not sure the laughs we get from them at James's expense would be so easily replaceable.
- ByteGuerilla, on 07/05/2008, -1/+17Easily. They're all as important as each other, as what's humorous is their interaction.
- mickstephenson, on 07/05/2008, -0/+15Ever heard of a straight man before? It's an essential dynamic of a lot of comedy.
- fafaforza, on 07/05/2008, -1/+16Wow have you seen a pilot or preview to know that it will be *****?
- midejitsu, on 07/05/2008, -1/+16What are you talking about? They revived the cool wall. Spending some time on that is time well spent.
- ByteGuerilla, on 07/05/2008, -4/+19Who the ***** is Adam Carolla?
- waydee, on 07/05/2008, -0/+14The BBC has no commercials on any of its channels - its pretty much entirely (as far as I know) funded by 'license' payments, £140 ($280) a year that theoretically at least everyone who owns a TV in the UK should pay.
It's a pretty common setup in Europe, I don't particularly agree with it since you're forced to pay for programming you dont care for, well documented mismanagement of public funds etc. but the alternative is a national broadcaster full of ads... - agentsarah6, on 07/05/2008, -0/+13Don't break up the dream team, for the love of God.
- Niz1, on 07/05/2008, -0/+13It doesnt say Clarkson is leaving just the other two,
- twilightzone, on 07/05/2008, -1/+14It's its.
- jjb123, on 07/05/2008, -4/+17Those audiences are always so dry. Just watch when the hosts ask them a question, the all reply "Yes" in a monotone voice, very odd.
- Tyrghast, on 07/05/2008, -0/+13Hey Jeremy Clarkson contributes quite a bit as well. Hell, they could film him brushing his teeth in the morning and I bet it would be hilarious.
- SpeedyG, on 07/05/2008, -1/+13Seriously, at worst, this is standard contract negotiating tactics, especially given there's a full month before contracts expire.
Is it possible for the bulk of an article to be inaccurate as a result of the article's own content? - LuCiFer6, on 07/05/2008, -5/+17waydee
Can you please explain "paid my license fee"? What does it mean that "you" have a pay license fee? - FordSVT1, on 07/05/2008, -0/+12Wow, they "flat out turned down" the Beeb's first offer. What a surprise!
This is just typical last-minute contract negotiation BS. I doubt they're both asking for "exactly" what Clarkson's got, they just want a fat raise. I can't see the future, but I'd bet $5 that both of them will re-sign. - ByteGuerilla, on 07/05/2008, -1/+12How did three people justify burying LuCiFer6's comment when all he did was ask a question? I swear diggers are binary people, digging what they like or agree with and burying everything else.
- gronkers, on 07/05/2008, -0/+11Never Fear! Top Gear Dog can carry the show!
^-^ - Modiga, on 07/05/2008, -0/+11Clarkson appears in other BBC shows besides Top Gear, I'm guessing that's a large reason for him to get more.
- themoose, on 07/05/2008, -0/+10Daily Telegraph is sensationalises anything. ***** news source since fox.
- ButlerMonkey, on 07/05/2008, -0/+10A response to all this on Top Gear's site - http://www.topgear.com/blogs/planettopgear/132-tgt ...
- hamdevguru, on 07/05/2008, -0/+10You mean Top Gear AND the possibility of a £1,000 fine made you pay the license fee.
- smacksaw, on 07/05/2008, -3/+13I think it's interesting...it's like an open window into a person's psychology. Clarkson is an egomaniac? That's what you call an egomaniac? Anyone who is secure in who they are and don't care what other people have to say is an egomaniac. Oh, wait. And let me guess...anyone who is well-informed is arrogant, right? People with a sharp wit are all smartasses?
I don't know what ***** show you're watching, but if Clarkson was an egomaniac he would not humiliate himself the way he does. He may talk a lot of smack, but it's in jest. Perhaps you can't tell the difference. But he gets torn down every episode. In fact, that's sort of the point of the show, in case you didn't get it. They tear down cars while tearing each other down. - waydee, on 07/05/2008, -3/+13...and?
- higgs, on 07/05/2008, -0/+10Producer Andy Wilman post this on the Top Gear Blog:
"I should be writing about this week's show, but if you'll excuse me I have to take a moment to say a few words about the stuff in the papers, which basically states Richard and James are leaving unless they get a million pounds a minute, and that Jeremy is already on four million pounds a minute and also trousers 98 percent of all the profits from Top Gear, Dr Who, Strictly Come Dancing, The Tweenies and Big Brother."
http://www.topgear.com/blogs/planettopgear/132-tgt ... - Niz1, on 07/05/2008, -0/+10I hope they get their case they should get paid the same, they are also the targets of Claksons jokes so without them he is nothing so without James May or Richard Hammond, there is no show. They all have their personalities which makes the show great, not just Clarkson ihope the BBC realise this.
- inactive, on 07/05/2008, -0/+9I do think Clarkson is worth a bit more, but not vastly so. All 3 of the hosts are great, he just seems to be the center of the show a bit more.
- MadOgre, on 07/05/2008, -3/+12Die.
In.
A.
Fire. - mickstephenson, on 07/05/2008, -1/+10You can dispose of your own garbage, thank you very much.
- midejitsu, on 07/05/2008, -0/+9Being the worst on Top Gear is not really a condemnation now, is it? Besides, if you’ve ever seen episodes from their first season before May was part of the team you will agree that he brings a lot to the table.
