- hackwrench, on 10/12/2007, -5/+105No, they don't accidentally start showing the wrong commercials. There are national ad spots that get shown if a local advertisement doesn't get shown. Sometimes at the edges of the local content the national content sort of bleeds through. There are tokens in the national data stream that tells the local providers like cable companies or local broadcasting affiliates where they can insert their ads.

It would be funny if your teacher reads Digg. - rockforever, on 10/12/2007, -3/+74When I was in High School, I was the producer of the school Television News program. Yeah, seriously. Anyways when I was a senior I didn't care what I did as long as I got to do what I wanted. So during some of my stories I would just do whatever. I did this exact thing. For one frame I put in a picture of me with the words "MATT IS THE GREATEST" and then kept going. When we finished that episode of our show, my teacher looked over at me and said, what was that flash? I asked him what he was talking about and it never came up again.
- nreynolds, on 10/12/2007, -42/+106this happens all the time. They like accidentally start showing the wrong commercial and then change it. If it was subliminal, you wouldn't notice anything.
- PimpinOnWelfare, on 10/12/2007, -8/+47Anybody else have the sudden urge for a 6-piece dollar nuggets?
- snowpatrol, on 10/12/2007, -2/+33SMOKE!
- tdowling, on 10/12/2007, -0/+28Genius. It's not subliminal advertising - they figured out how to get more people using TiVos to see their advertisements.
"Did you see that?"
"I think so...go back in slow motion."
"Ohhh, it's a McDonald's ad or something. Weird."
"I want Chicken McNuggets." - signal15, on 10/12/2007, -11/+38Whenever I see ads for McDonald's, I'm suddenly NOT hungry anymore.
They should compensate me for the years they took off my life when I ate their "food" a long time ago. - thewump, on 10/12/2007, -1/+25That's really weird from a marketing perspective.. I mean, what the f**k does McDonalds have to do with food?
- Stimpo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+24Damn, I HAVE to go get a Royale with Cheese now!
- RiemannLebesgue, on 10/12/2007, -6/+24Is there any evidence that this was intentional? Have you seen this happen more than one time on the Food Network? I've seen this happen before a few times on other channels (often a frame or two from the middle of some commercial) and they were obvious mistakes and not "subliminal" messages. (Those cases were such that they would have certainly picked a different bit from the commercial if it had been intentional.) Granted, this is the logo and slogan, but odds are such that eventually a mistake like that would have a logo being seen.

Direct link to skip SA - Berkana, on 10/12/2007, -6/+22If it were just a random frame from a Macdonald's ad, that would be one thing, but this was a full screen, simplified layout McD's logo with their tagline. I seriously doubt that this frame they flashed was an accidental snippet from a McDonald's ad that got jumbled in to Iron Chef.
Shame on them. Food Network is supposed to be about good food, not crap like McDonalds. Double disses for using subliminal ad flashing. - hackwrench, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16Saying "the end of Iron Chef" makes it sound as if it's at a point where it's cutting to commercials. According to the video, the blipvert is in the middle of an Iron Chef segment towards the end of Iron Chef and not at the end of Iron Chef per se.

Because, no, I didn't coin it myself. - pwallroth, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16I'm getting a little annoyed by the superduperliminal advertising, where someone runs up and stuffs a hamburger in my mouth while his partner takes three bucks out of my wallet.
- treelovinhippie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15Is subliminal advertising illegal in the US? ... I know it is in Aus
- HUKI365, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12And then post it on Youtube and DIGG...
- distrbnce, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12WOW! Talk about good timing... I read this, watched the video, then decided to turn it to foodnetwork just to see what was up.
Sure enough, Iron Chef was on. I turned it on right as the winner was being chosen, which is right before the set of clips where the single frame comes up.
So I watch intently, and yep, it's there. Saw it live for myself. - Koray, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14ARE YA SMOKIN' YET?
- ArthurSucks, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12It's funny, I hate TV for the 15 minutes of ads I have to watch during a half hour show. Kinda wish all ads were one frame only.

- filipeanut, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10I learned about the Royale with cheese from Pulp Fiction. Just wanted to say that.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7You'll also notice the McDonald's logo in the corner of the screen graphic sometimes during Iron Chef when they do a two-up shot.
This is hilarious to me since Iron Chef is a celebration of pushing the cooking envelope to the edge, and McDonalds is a celebration of making food taste as disgusting as possible. - PasteEater, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7@night141
Here's how it works in radio at least:
You have a button that sends out a tone to the affiliates that let's them (or the automation software) know that it's time to do one of two things: 1) play a "liner" which identifies the local station ("You're listening to WXYZ radio") or 2) play local commercials. However, you are usually at the mercy of whoever is pushing the buttons, and the clock that they are looking at (if it's not automated... like during live shows). If the clock they are reading is a second off, you will hear a quick flash of the beginning of another commercial because they pushed the button a little late.
The commercials are usually queued in succession so that they all play right in a row. So, after you see a bunch of local commercials, the affiliates are usually released back to the show. So, while someone in California will be listening to local commercials, someone in Michigan is listening to completely different commercials. That is, if any local commercials are booked. If not, you hear the national commercials (this is why you will sometimes see Sonic commercials in Michigan for example). If someone pressed the button a little too EARLY, you will hear the end of the national commercials because the local commercials ended a little earlier than the network planned for.
So, there are two things being broadcast, but you can only listen to one. I would imagine that the same principles apply to TV.
- Jaryd2006, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10Id like to point out to everyone that I saw this too, And it did NOT even play anywhere near a commercial break, It was during the recap of the scores near the end of the show, About 2 minutes away from a commercial, It was just an instant flash of the Mcdonalds logo that was all.
It had to be a subliminal message, It just had to be. Even when commercials do overlap or cut out, its never for just one frame... - Takteek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/conline/pubs/buspubs/ad-faqs.htm

Subliminal Advertising
Is it legal to use subliminal advertising techniques?
It would be deceptive for marketers to embed ads with so-called subliminal messages that could affect consumer behavior. However, most consumer behavior experts have concluded that such methods aren’t effective.
So basically it is deceptive behavior which is punishable by a fine of $11,000USD per day it is ran it's not like they're going to feel it, thats the cost of doing business. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8digg the above down. I didn't realize there was a video and I was WAY off. Apologies and nice Catch!
- LoadStar, on 10/12/2007, -6/+12I think it's pretty clear to me that it was intentional.
The logo was seen nationwide on Food Network, during "Iron Chef America," so it wasn't a local insert by any particular cable or satellite operator.
Also, the segment of the show, where they reveal the results and scores for the two contestants, was sponsored by McDonald's (the "scoreboard" normally features a sponsor logo above the different scoring categories, and beside the two contestants names), so it wouldn't have been a local ad - it had to originate at the network level. And as others noted, it was a simplified slide, a full-screen red background with the golden arch logo, something not currently used in McD's TV ads, so it's not likely an ad that was accidentally switched to by control room operators. - williamw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I was quite interested in this, mainly cause I was watching Iron Chef America tonight, and then had burgers (at home).
- gbaey, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9Aren't subliminal ads illegal?
- shimbob, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5What next, McDonalds sponsors the Olympic Games?
Wait... - Lax32, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4The only thing that made me think of was vomit.
- troymcdavis, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Outside of the US, they don't use the English measuring system, so "quarter-pounder" really doesn't make much sense. So it's a Royale abroad, and for those of us in the US who are cool like that.
- Gatesophile, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I think I would prefer submliminal ads to regular commercials. It wouldn't interfere as much.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Made WITH 100% beef does not mean it is 100% beef.
it means "100%beef" is just one of the many ingredients it is made WITH.
still will not buy Mcdognads. - Gatesophile, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4it won't make you, but it will have you think about mcdonald's.
- MikeXpop, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@heiroglyph
Watch the Youtube clip. The frame appears within a single shot, not in between cuts. So the editing scenario you mentioned is unlikely. - deweather, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Subliminal messages DO NOT WORK. They are illegal because they "sound" immoral and evil. In reality, (all experiments prove this) they really don't work. McDonald's Ad Agency knows this (as all advertising execs do).
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5That was "subliminal"? LOL! Go look up the word.
- conna, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5TV sucks. I thought the FCC made subliminal advertisements illegal.
- distrbnce, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7You're actually wrong.
McDonald's was sponsoring the rest of the episode (they had the same logo, only smaller on the scoreboard), and also I saw it for myself, on Comcast.
At best it was someone in the control booth putting up a graphic at the wrong time, but only for one frame. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8Yeah sometimes commercials overlap or overtake one another, I've seen it happen before. Don't know why it happens though.
- qwertydvorak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3i think i found the real subliminal message:
"Was that the McDonalds logo...?" Thanks to the magic of my Dish Network DVR, I rewind, and put it in to slow motion.
now, let me get back to watching the great programming on my DISH NETWORK DVR. - cptn_cardboard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I noticed something similar in an ice cream commercial. It was a "Dreyer's Slow Churned" ice cream commercial, the one where the guy is unpacking the ice cream at the store, and theres people outside looking in holding spoons, or something to that extent. After that bit, it shows the ice cream on some ice, and right before it cuts away and the commercial ends, the screen flashes to a different image. I had to watch it several times before I realized the name on the carton changed from "Dreyer's Ice Cream" to "Edy's Ice Cream." After a quick wiki search, I found its only called Dreyer's in Washington, Oregon, California, and Texas, and its Edy's everywhere else.
That was probably an accident though, the editor might've had the dreyer's video in a layer above the edy's video and he cut off the dreyer's too soon. OR, there trying to soften us up for a name change to Edy's. Im sure they have unnecessary expenses due to having 2 different names (like the websites for instance)
