- JustinTX, on 10/15/2008, -3/+22I'm a fan of Stewart and Colbert but what many of Americans have forgotten is that the second amendment was included in the U.S. Constitution by people who had just waged a war to free themselves from tyranny. The second amendment is check against government power. Its purpose is to help ensure that we do not slip back into the same tyranny our forefathers freed us from. In short, the second amendment preserves your right to defend yourself even from your own government.
I know trading our civil liberties for a false sense of security provided by an ever more powerful government is all the rage these days but it is a band wagon I just cannot jump on. - ast16, on 10/14/2008, -0/+19I second that amendment!

- slothchunk, on 10/14/2008, -0/+14actually in response to my own question, they should have him join steve carrell and ed helms on the office. He could make an awesome character.
- PatchGandhi, on 10/14/2008, -0/+12Yes, let's get Jon a new job too, while we're at it.
Why do you want to take all my favorites away? - AlaskaLoneWolf, on 10/14/2008, -2/+14Dugg for Elk Mountain bit... one of my favorite places:

- vtnerd, on 10/15/2008, -5/+9Right, because there's no way any of the soldiers in the military could possibly take the side of the revolution. Get real. If there was a huge uprising (say 25% of the US) a lot of soldiers would have second thoughts about shooting the citizens they're supposed to protect.
Nobody is saying that an individual is going to take on the military, but there are way more US citizens than there are members of the miltary.
Besides that, the terrorists in Iraq and Afghanistan seem to do pretty well against the US military. There would be casualties, but if enough people supported the revolution it would succeed. - moonshn, on 10/15/2008, -0/+4I like this one better
http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x1ovwh_conan-obri ... - PoonGnarfler, on 10/15/2008, -1/+5Anyone else really like Brian Williams for going along with all of the Daily Show and Stephen Colbert's *****? Him talking about Rob Riggle is awesome, and I was so happy when he wore a WristStrong bracelet on his show.
- vtnerd, on 10/15/2008, -4/+7Certainly not on the issue of gun control. The facts all support gun rights and contradict anything that the Brady Campaign or anyone else has to say about the matter.
Case in point, 40 states that implemented concealed carry saw their violent crime rates drop or stay the same. 9 states are "right to carry" states where it is very difficult to get a concealed carry permit (ie. CA - famous people can get permits because they're special, regular peoples' lives aren't important enough to allow them to protect themselves). I don't know about that 50th state, but even if the crime increased there it is obviously an anomaly best explained by some other factor.
I could go on, but it's better if you do your own research on guns. The facts are overwhelmingly supportive of an armed populace in the US. And if you do, stay away from any site that says a gun is more likely to kill its owner than an intruder - that study was debunked years ago and the results of that study are patently false but they still survive on the internet. - weatherlsp, on 10/15/2008, -0/+3Same here.
- inactive, on 10/15/2008, -1/+4 Amazing how the same people complaining about the fascism of government are also for removing our only real defense.
- MrThirsty, on 10/15/2008, -0/+3Yeah Gun Day was the best one
- vtnerd, on 10/15/2008, -4/+7Wrong. Wrong. Wrong.
Guns are used defensively in the US between 800,000 and 2.5 million times per year. That's more good than any perceived harm that you think guns are causing. Most defensive uses involve no shots fired so don't fret about 800,000 to 2.5 million violent criminals getting hurt. I say that because you seem like one of those people that thinks a criminal in your house ought to be able to sue you if they get injured or killed while committing a crime.
You also seem to think that the government has your best interests at heart, when the last decade would indicate otherwise. We've seen civil liberties eroded and personal freedoms erased in the name of feeling safe. I'm fine with you feeling safe as long as it doesn't interfere with my right to own a gun. However, my right to actually be safe trumps your desire to feel safe. The end.
And yes, an armed revolution is entirely plausible. 25% of the US (75 million people) is not going to be stopped by vastly outnumbered local police officers. You can also count on police officers and soldiers joining the revolution instead of standing firmly against it. - inactive, on 10/15/2008, -0/+2Should have worn your earplugs at the shooting range.

And let's fight to protect it! - BabyWookie, on 10/15/2008, -0/+2Where is all this main-stream leftist media that does reports on guns, religion and rich people being evil? FOX News is far right, CNN was centrist, but is now trying to cater to the far right (Glenn Beck, Nancy Grace) and even MSNBC is not as bad as you described. What the ***** are you bitching about? By the way, Guns are not evil, but they shouldn't be over-glorified either.
- koicho, on 10/15/2008, -0/+1doesn't work for me either. Is this flash they use? I wonder what's preventing it... I know I got sound on everything else...
- inactive, on 10/15/2008, -3/+4Let's see Jon Stewart schlep around Brooklyn like a schmoe for a few days and see if he still doesn't want to have a gun.
- TVarmy, on 10/15/2008, -0/+1The snowman bit made me laugh until I fell out of my chair. I could have used the acronym, but I didn't want to, as you would not take it seriously.

- shig, on 10/15/2008, -2/+3"Did you learn nothing from Waco?"
Yes I did. The first attempt to storm of the Branch Davidian compound by the BATF failed after agents were pinned down with zero ammo. Being decent people, the BDs let them drop weapons and drag their dead or wounded in retreat.
Lessons:
1. A firearm is the only sufficient defense against multiple attackers.
2. A fully-automatic firearm is the only sufficient defense against multiple armed attackers. - Tarl, on 10/15/2008, -0/+1I had the same problem. I then opened it in a ie tab and it works fine.
- Johnnyjm, on 10/15/2008, -0/+1Conan never fails...

- maz2331, on 10/17/2008, -0/+1Actually, how about some news organizations that just report what actually happened without ANY editorialization, left or right slant, sensationalization, or other bias.
All of us need accurate information to make proper decisions and form opinions. Garbage in, garbage out applies here.
BabyWookie - it seems that your left/right meter is in need of recalibration if you think of CNN as "right-wing". CNN is about as "centrist" as you're going to find, MSNBC is pretty far off to the left, and even Fox is center-right.
Nancy Grace isn't far right, she's just far-out. The woman is an authoritarian former prosecutor who's been censured several times for denying defendants a fair trial due to prosecutoraial misconduct. Her attitude is "everyone's guilty, they all say 'I didn't do it', let's just hang them and forget about the formality of a trial'." People like that exist on both the left and right, and there's even some of them in the center. - spyderveloce, on 10/22/2008, -0/+1That would be great: a bunch of gun-loving rednecks vs. the best-equipped, best-trained military in the world! While a few soldiers might support the revolution, the majority of them would follow orders and quell the violence. Your idea of revolution would never work in this age...perhaps a more peaceful one would...start by voting!
- kitsua, on 10/15/2008, -2/+3Please don't call me an *****. I may have called your argument absurd but I refrained from insulting you and tried at least to keep my points sober and rational. I know it's easy to get het up whilst on the internets, but slanging matches get us nowhere.
Firstly, America is nowhere near socialism, never has been and never will be. The whole country still has an apoplectic allergic reaction to the very mention of it, let alone allow any politician with any kind of 'socialist agenda' to achieve any sort of success or power. And no, 'big government' is not the same thing.
The problem is you're so entrenched in the ideology of guns that you seem to overlook some of the more palpable realities surrounding them. A gun is an incredibly dangerous and easily misused weapon that emboldens and can intoxicate it's user with power, to deadly ends. Why oh why would you not be in favour of controlling those weapons if you are a legal citizen that knows how to use and control your guns? Surely you have nothing to lose and everything to gain?
A car is an incredibly useful tool that is at the heart of American society and culture too. However, as it is potentially dangerous there are all sorts of regulations and infrastructures surrounding their use. This is sensible and responsible. Why not extend the same reasoning and logic to something even more dangerous (and far less useful)?
I still can't get my head around the concept of keeping a gun collection to protect you from the government though. That one really does baffle me, I must say. - Tyrghast, on 10/15/2008, -0/+1Plug in your speakers.
- armakaryk, on 10/15/2008, -0/+1same problem, but i just got watching todays episode on dailyshow.com and that worked fine.
- JustinTX, on 10/16/2008, -0/+1Believe it or not I tried to edit out the ***** bit but Digg's comment system choked and wouldn't let me save the edit. I agree that it was uncalled for and I apologize. It certainly lends a tone to my post that I did not intend for it to have. I'm not heated.
I understand that America may seem like it is nowhere near socialism to those who believe that socialism is the answer, but it is intellectually irresponsible to suggest that a country in which the top 1% of wage earners pay 40% of the taxes while the bottom 50% pay 3% is anything but socialist. We just gave Wall St. $830 billion dollars to cover their failed businesses. We have a little institution we like to call Social Security. When Barack Obama takes office he and the rest of the Democrats are going to socialize health care.
We've got plenty of socialism on this side of the pond.
I'm not opposed to sensible gun control laws. I think convicted violent criminals have waived their right to bear arms. However, in a country founded upon the principal that one is innocent until proven guilty, I don't feel I should be treated as though I were a criminal. I'm not a criminal and there is no basis to suspend my 2nd amendment rights.
I don't have a gun collection per se. I own a Browning .30-06 hunting rifle that I inherited from my grandfather and a Remington .22 rifle that I was given for my 14th birthday.
I wish I could submit to the delusion that governments aren't at best necessary evils and at worse simply evil. I wish I could live the fantasy where I did not need to fear tyranny. It baffles me that otherwise intelligent and learned individuals can't see all of the historical precedences for a complacent society to crumble into despotism or if they do, somehow believe that America is different and therefore immune to the danger. We are not.
As someone else said in another post, it isn't me with my lone .30-06 that keeps my government in check. This government's power is derived from the consent of the governed, from the millions of individuals who if so provoked may withdraw that consent and defend the decision to do so. It is quite offensive that you would presume that anyone who staunchly defends their second amendment rights is a kook holed up in a bunker with a gun collection waiting for the government to attack him. It verges on bigotry. - solidwhetstone, on 10/15/2008, -0/+1Stephen Colbert before he got his show. Still as hilarious as ever.
