- DDRSkata, on 10/21/2009, -3/+78They forgot Daria (spinoff of Beavis and Butthead) under best.
- bossm4n, on 10/22/2009, -1/+40The worst- "After MASH". http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AfterMASH
- tgbauer77, on 10/21/2009, -1/+32I agree with most of this list. Colbert is a great spin-off of Stewart and Frasier is also a great second try at Cheers. But Bachelorette is practically the same thing as the Bachelor. Both are equally terrible. The only thing more terrible is that Tila Tequila nonsense. That show was a train wreck!
- Eurynom0s, on 10/22/2009, -1/+31I think calling TNG a "spinoff" is stretching things a bit.
- ianzu, on 10/22/2009, -0/+20Yeah, but one of my closest friends is a bear. So I can relate.
- ianzu, on 10/22/2009, -0/+18I think they picked Cleveland because he was the least developed character of the bunch, and you kind of have to take the least developed character and make him your own. Kind of like Frasier.
The Cleveland Show does kinda suck, but I'm willing to reserve judgment. If we get angry at TV execs for pulling awesome shows because they "haven't found an audience" (Firefly etc.) then I would be the world's greatest hypocrite if I denounced a new show after seeing only a couple of episodes.
I figure they have one season to woo me. After that, yeah the show sucks. - SuperXSonicX, on 10/22/2009, -4/+21Dugg for Star Trek TNG
- Cepster, on 10/22/2009, -0/+16and the Simpsons. It's not like the Simpsons were characters in a fictional television show that were loved enough to get their own show. It's more that the original episodes happened to air in the middle of someone else's show.
At least TNG was created off of another fictional show, and there were some (albeit few and far between) characters that appeared in both the original and TNG - BohicaTwentyTwo, on 10/22/2009, -0/+14They mentioned Laverne and Shirley, but they didn't mention Mork and Mindy? How could you possibly beat a coked up Robin Williams?
- bigbluemachine, on 10/22/2009, -0/+13With a coked up Jonathon Winters of course.
...but in all seriousness
Once Robin joins Richard, George, and John** we will officially be down one of the greatest era's in modern comedy. Don't get me wrong, I know he's not too old but from recent hospital stints something tells me Robin has been re-introduced to the powdered pale rider.
**Pryor, Carlin, and Belushi - JoePython, on 10/22/2009, -0/+11I've often wondered what show has the largest spin-off tree. I think it is "Love American Style", because "Happy Days" came from one of its skits.
Love American Style
== Happy Days
==== Laverne & Shirley
==== Joanie Loves Chachi
==== Mork & Mindy
was there a short-lived series featuring Pinky Tuscadero? I bet I'm missing some.
But, maybe "All in the Family":
All in the Family
== The Jeffersons
== Archie Bunker's Place
== Maude (Maude was related to Edith, I believe)
==== Good Times
The Mary Tyler Moore show had three spin-offs, that I can remember: Rhoda, Lou Grant, and Phyllis - acknotSW, on 10/22/2009, -4/+14Have to disagree, I love family guy and American dad, but Cleveland was the worst choice for a spin off character, there's just nothing there to work with. Trying to make it a kinder gentler family guy isn't helping matters.
- BatterseaPS, on 10/22/2009, -1/+11They shouldn't've considered TNG a spin-off.
Family Matters should've gotten a spot!
"Ehhhh did I do that?" - dingedarmor, on 10/22/2009, -0/+9The left off Lone Gunmen, spin off of X-Files.
- CarolFil, on 10/22/2009, -1/+10List is good except the fact that Facts of Life was awesome.
- ianzu, on 10/22/2009, -1/+10What about Family Matters? On one hand it was a lame show. On the other hand it gave us Urkel.
I just can't decide which list it should go on... - Elranzer, on 10/22/2009, -0/+8Why is his son different on that show? What happened to his spazoid son who was good at golf?
- fl3sh, on 10/22/2009, -4/+12The Cleveland Show is a disaster imo. I think a spin off with ANY of the characters from Family Guy is a fail... the show is great because all the characters together make it great.
- sizzzzlerz, on 10/22/2009, -0/+8Cocaine is god's way of telling you that you make too much money -- Robin Williams
- GalacticRerun, on 10/22/2009, -2/+10Da Ali G Show was a good one. Spun off from The 11 O'clock Show.
- Maxwell1234, on 10/22/2009, -4/+12and King of the Hill.
- dbuck, on 10/22/2009, -0/+8Fish? (Barney Miller)
The Ropers? (Three's Company) - bjs3171, on 10/22/2009, -0/+7Kind of surprised they didn't mention Friends itself, as a spinoff from Mad About You.
Pheobe's sister was the waitress at the restaurant they went to.
Also, in the comments, someone mentioned Boston Legal as a spin-off from the Practice. Alan Shore and DENNY CRANE are two of the best characters ever created. - markusfarkus, on 10/22/2009, -1/+8How is Cheers a spinoff of Taxi?
- 1jaxstate1, on 10/22/2009, -0/+7WTF, The Facts of Life was a pretty good show. Not great, but now the worst by any account.
- coltrane68, on 10/22/2009, -2/+9Great choices all. I'm not an Ab Fab fan, but I can see why other people like it. Cleveland show is the disaster the author says it is.
- Coffeedemon, on 10/22/2009, -0/+7If you were old enough to watch it you probably loved it just like everyone else. Problem is it stayed on the air way past its best before date.
- wolfing, on 10/22/2009, -0/+7I was going to post the same thing
- Pthalio, on 10/22/2009, -0/+6Friends was never a spin off of Mad About You. Lisa Kudrow had a bit part on Mad About You when she was hired for Friends. They two shows were on the same network and it was noticed the characters were both similarly 'flaky' so the writers on Friends decided to make Pheobe and Ursula sisters, and there was one crossover episode.
- PenguinChaser, on 10/22/2009, -0/+6Don't forget to throw Three's a Crowd into the Three's Company spinoff fail category as well.
- Bloodwine, on 10/22/2009, -0/+6Simpsons is #13 on the list. The LEAST you could do when you write these ***** comments is to do some proper research.
- markusfarkus, on 10/22/2009, -0/+6What about Good Times? A spinoff of a spinoff.
- bigbluemachine, on 10/22/2009, -0/+6In all honesty you could probably trim off the "meme" part and it would still carry the same meaning.
On second thought, you could probably just trim the whole thing to *cue Kanye* and I would argue the meaning would be identical. - dysonlu, on 10/22/2009, -0/+6The use of number 7 brought to you by Microsoft.
- bklny, on 10/22/2009, -1/+7 Hey Weezie!
- ianzu, on 10/22/2009, -0/+6Definitely the worst when compared to the 'parent' show.
As a stand-alone, it wasn't really much worse than the fare available at the time.
But it should have made the list. And if you consider the MASH tv show as a spinoff of the movie, they both should have. Would have made a striking Best/Worst visual. - BrianGarceau, on 10/22/2009, -0/+5Angel was so underrated. I actually liked the show more than Buffy The Vampire Slayer. I know a TV show is about preference, but Angel was great TV show. It had great character development and was entertaining, what more could you want?
- wolfing, on 10/22/2009, -2/+7I don't think Star Trek TNG is a spinoff. To me a spinoff would use characters from the previous series. TNG was a whole new series, just in the same 'universe'.
They definitely forgot to mention Daria (spinoff from Beavis & Butthead) and 'The Pebbles & Bambam show' from 'The Flintstones' - MOJIRA, on 10/22/2009, -0/+5Lots of "7's" on digg today. Is this subliminal Microsoft advertising?
- screwkevin, on 10/22/2009, -0/+5You think that's bad, remember that time...
- Pimptastic, on 10/22/2009, -0/+5Screw any list that doesnt mention Benson as a great spinoff from SOAP.
- SooperSonic, on 10/22/2009, -0/+5Maybe they'll explain it in a future episode. Or just run a bunch of non-sequitur gags.
- bjs3171, on 10/22/2009, -0/+5sorry, are you new to Seth Macfarlane?
- teho22, on 10/22/2009, -0/+5Angel is safe
- ianzu, on 10/22/2009, -0/+4Perfect Strangers
- Coffeedemon, on 10/22/2009, -0/+4The Ropers was horrible but deserves a mention due to the quality of Three's Company (and how little it did to uphold that quality).
- bjs3171, on 10/22/2009, -1/+5It would have been nice if Seth had surprised us a little, and made The Cleveland Show with a different sort of humor than Family Guy - Kind of like how Frasier was completely different from Cheers. As is, though, it's just pointless.
- bjs3171, on 10/22/2009, -1/+5i love the Sherlock Holmes episodes...
- SketchaMPM, on 10/22/2009, -0/+4Um, no? Angel > Buffy.
- smack1700, on 10/22/2009, -1/+5I would say in order for something to be a real Spinoff, it has to be an established show, and one or more of the characters have to leave the original and be the SAME character, just in a different setting. Hence, the character was "spun-off" from the original.
So Jeffersons, definitely. Frasier, yup, same character in Cheers. Cleveland show, absolutely.
But Star Trek TNG? Simpsons? Not so much -
