- judist63, on 04/14/2008, -0/+22DUH! About time!!
- Mswldflwr, on 04/14/2008, -1/+21I don't get it. There's a rather large fandom that was recently punished with the loss of their favorite show (very recently) because too many people were watching online instead of on TV. Anyone care to explain this to me?
- thelastcivilian, on 04/14/2008, -0/+17TV execs are stupid.
- SaveJake, on 04/14/2008, -0/+17Watch out....They really don't know what they want yet..........!
- Harabeck, on 04/14/2008, -0/+15Seriously, I wouldnt even mind if they left the commercials in, just let me watch shows online whenever I want.
- Mswldflwr, on 04/14/2008, -1/+16That's great that they want to up their online viewer numbers. But their PRIORITY ought to be trying to figure out a better way to count the numbers they already have on their networks. Because we all know by now that the antiquated system they are currently using sure as heck isn't accurate.
- thelastcivilian, on 04/14/2008, -1/+15It sure seems easy for TV execs to admit to online distribution's charm now that the writers' strike is over...
- bdbr, on 04/14/2008, -0/+10If they'd just make the quality decent, I'd put up with a few commercials to watch online at my leisure. ABC does a pretty good job of it (at least with "Lost"). Hulu's quality is pretty awful.
- b3nman, on 04/14/2008, -0/+10hulu.com is a step in the right direction
- hayzeus, on 04/14/2008, -0/+10"The challenge is to grow viewership online without cannibalizing traditional ratings and DVD sales while making more money on programming seen on the Web"
There's you're answer right there : a reality show about cannibals. $1.5 million bonus, please. - Dralite, on 04/14/2008, -0/+9I wonder how many theoretical dollars this venture will make?
- mpbnice, on 04/14/2008, -1/+10Amazing, just amazing. According to CBS, "Jericho" didn't have enough butts on the couch and CBS cancelled it even though alternative viewing had high numbers. Go figure.
- killbert24, on 04/14/2008, -0/+9In the future TV and Internet will be synonomous.
- WiseWeasel, on 04/14/2008, -0/+8How about some standard format video podcasts with commercials, so we don't have to watch their shows on their website, through a web browser, on a computer, but are free to watch on any device capable of playing mp4 video podcasts... That way, we could easily subscribe to the shows we want, and have new episodes delivered as they are released. Having to go visit a dozen different websites and deal with their different interfaces to watch the random shows I want sucks arse.
- gcman94, on 04/14/2008, -0/+8I think we should have more sites like Hulu, because Tv stations make money off of ads not us watching it. If tv is on the internet and its open to more people it will become more widely accepted and liked and in the end will make more money, benefiting everyone.
- Kenzan, on 04/14/2008, -0/+8Want to get more "eyeballs" (god that's a lame expression.)
Simple. Make good shows that are intelligent and well-written, Just stop making consumerist crap. - Mswldflwr, on 04/14/2008, -0/+7Thank you for that enlightening answer. Sorry I don't have the $1.5 million bonus to give you. Maybe I can borrow it from Uncle Les.
But they've got to know that people go to the web because of what they see on TV, not the other way around. I know I'd choose watching TV on the big screen over watching on my computer any day. Online is just a bonus to me. - TeamJesus, on 04/14/2008, -1/+8If TV execs really cared about internet "eyeballs" then wouldn't Jericho still be on the air?
- bdbr, on 04/14/2008, -0/+6They probably weren't talking about ad-based online viewers at that time.
- sassip, on 04/15/2008, -0/+6TiVo and all DVR's are changing the entire paradigm. Watch at your leisure and skip the commercials. Since I got TiVo years ago, I am no longer a captive audience.
- Silenthunter747, on 04/14/2008, -0/+5At 1680x1050 it's only .5" (What...I had a ruler right next to my desk)
So either your "10 inches" is not quite what you thought it was, or you're using a resolution I can not even begin to comprehend.
(Or maybe I'm simply feeding a troll :/ ) - cubicledrone, on 04/14/2008, -0/+4"Sit your ass back down on that couch and shut up."
That about cover it? - WiseWeasel, on 04/15/2008, -0/+3No, standard format MP4 cannot block the viewer from skipping ads, but most players make this impractical through less-than-optimal seeking. It seems like the ad breaks placed in the online shows on network websites are extremely short, so most people wouldn't bother trying to seek past the ads. The advantage of having millions of players on the market TODAY that can use them outweighs any loss of control from the use of a standard format. Networks would likely limit the quality of the video podcast offerings, for bandwidth reasons, and to upsell on future HD disc sales, so the fact that they're making standard format content available shouldn't detract from their other monetizing options. Also, keep in mind that as soon as an episode airs on cable, it's going to be captured in standard format and put on P2P anyways, so they might as well be getting that traffic and hopefully displaying them their ads. They would still be in a much better position than with their current offerings.
- moocow1452, on 04/14/2008, -0/+3That's awfully hypocritical right there, considering that Nielson's are about as reliable as a gun you want to play Russian Roulette with, and they were looking for Solid Numbers for it to continue.
- bdbr, on 04/14/2008, -0/+3Why would that make them any money at all to know that?
- bdbr, on 04/14/2008, -0/+3What do you mean by "alternate viewing"? If its not ad-supported (or at least leading to SOMETHING monetary), then it basically doesn't count from a business POV.
The hard part is going to be tracing it to DVD sales (e.g. I watched the first season of Battlestar Galactica then bought it). - RobotBuddha, on 04/15/2008, -0/+2Everyone involved in the process is ready to move forward with new tracking techniques. Even the neilson's, perpetually stuck in 1950, is pretty much up to speed with the ability to get more accurate readings. For whatever reason, I suspect terror at being "the guy" to implement it and fail, nobody is willing to press the go button.
- RobotBuddha, on 04/15/2008, -0/+2Standard format means we could skip the commercials. Well, actually, I guess I don't know that for a fact. Does mp4 support some kind of "disable controls" flag?
- zway, on 02/10/2009, -0/+0doesnt sound good...
http://www.toz.net - Bamshackle, on 04/15/2008, -1/+1How about picking up Rev3 and airing show of its shows. In fact replace G4 all together and bring back a tech tv like channel.
- FadieZ, on 04/14/2008, -2/+1Sounds disgusting
- bbrasky, on 04/15/2008, -2/+1Buried for being older than most video technology.
- Gatonegrosky, on 04/15/2008, -1/+0Bring Back PB :P
- cubicledrone, on 04/14/2008, -3/+0Thread over.
- inactive, on 04/14/2008, -15/+1Eyeball this! 8====D
10 inches of man righ there.
