- sonochamp, on 10/12/2007, -1/+76#1 Spin-Off that worked: The Simpsons
So successful that people forget it was a spin-off - Dpack1, on 10/12/2007, -2/+59Comment Abuse

6. The Bradys
5. Checking In
4. Enos

2. The Tortellis
1. Hello, Larry - Neiby, on 10/12/2007, -2/+51Joanie Loves Chachi had an interesting time of it in Korea since "chachi" in Korean is penis.
- darksheer, on 10/12/2007, -4/+51Most spin-offs that work work because they don't try to emulate the show they were spun from--and usually take very little from the show they were originally a part of.
Frazier vs. Cheers - Frazier was an entirely different style of show
Friends vs. Mad About You - (Phoebe was a spin-off character).
The Simpsons vs. The Tracy Ulman Show
All very different from the shows they spawned from. - flipnaman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+37Saved By The Bell - The College Years
- oddmanout, on 10/12/2007, -1/+31Also, Daria from Beavis and Butthead. (sorry... just thought of it)
- oddmanout, on 10/12/2007, -2/+30Does Dr. Phil's show count as a spinoff of Oprah's?
- fiver22, on 10/12/2007, -1/+28A more interresting article would be "Spin-offs that worked -and why they worked".
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+27You should be utterly ashamed of yourself for posting ANY link to a Geocities page!!
- darksheer, on 10/12/2007, -2/+26You may not have found it funny--but enough people did to keep it as a top-ratings performer every week for 11 years.
- neuromute, on 10/12/2007, -2/+25Joey was doomed to failure from the start. I'm so glad someone called out Joanie Loves Chachi... that garbage ruined my childhood.
- yournamehere, on 10/12/2007, -2/+25Frasier was witty and made fun of itself. I don't know what you were watching but the Frasier I saw was clever and at some points hysterical.
- oddmanout, on 10/12/2007, -1/+21Family Matters! it spun off of Perfect Strangers.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15Galactica 1980
Caprica (It will happen!) - darkphan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16No mention of The Lone Gunmen ... spin off from the X-Files.
- Vision2098, on 10/12/2007, -5/+18??? ?!?!?? ?????
????? ???? !!!?!?
????!?!??
???!?!!??!??!??!???!?!??!?!
??????????????????????! - tush, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15DarkSheer:
Friends was not a spin-off of Mad About You. Just because a character is common between two shows does not mean it is a spin-off. Friends is a spin-off of Mad About You, just like Mad About You is a spin-off of Sienfield! - vulcanius, on 10/12/2007, -8/+20God I hope you guys are kidding, the acting on the new Enterprise is terrible. The graphic style is worse than any previous series. The dialog is beyond lame. I could go on for days.
- billygreen23, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Saved by the Bell was a spin-off itself, from Good Morning, Miss Bliss.
- ahhell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Don't forget another spinoff The Ropers.
I think that one lasted about 2 eps. - drmangrum, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Little more to it than that. The show could have succeeded if they had tried to develop the characters. They spent more time throwing 80's cliches around that the entire show became dull and predictable. That '70's show succeeded because they had good actors, good storylines, a loose timeline. It was a sitcom based in the 70's, not about the 70's. That 80's show COULD have been a stellar series had they focused on characters dealing with the real drama of the 80's. Leisure suits, ankle warmers, and big hair only go so far.
- neuromute, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Remember The Ropers? That was a bad idea.
- kingkilr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Jeez I was sure Law and Order would make this list.
- darksheer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I don't think the original can be considered a spin-off because it wasn't really a spin-off as much as it was a re-tooling of the original show. So much so that most people who have seen "Good Morning Miss Bliss" have seen it rebranded as "Saved by the Bell: Junior High"
- humperdeath, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Joey was indeed a bomb (not Da Bomb) /sucked right out of the gate.
- tdogg241, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Darksheer: Phoebe was not a spin-off character. Ursula (Phoebe's twin sister) was on Mad About You. Phoebe was an entirely new character when Friends started.
- pcrow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Galactica: 1980.
And it wasn't Apollo and Starbuck, it was two new characters.
And boy it was bad. - laterallateral, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7@ibeetle
Comment deemed inaccurate for brutally painful misspelling of "legitimate"
That was just violent. - bigstinky, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Let's not forget "The New Monkees"...Better yet, let's.
- arbulus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6@rileyper
True, but I think it could still count. I don't see any problem with a "talk show" spin off sub-genre.
What about Star Wars: Droids? That was a fairly terrible 'toon. C3PO and R2D2 were great comic relief in the films, but not solid enough characters to sustain their own show. Besides, they're droids, so somebody has to own them, it's not like they'd just go wandering around the galaxy by themselves. - ColdChilli, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Mork and Mindy, and Laverne and Shirley were a spin offs from Happy Days
- Ninjab3ar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5They forgot "Joey"
- metalgod79, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Vinnie and Bobby. The spin off from Married with children surprisingly enough with the actor who bombed in another spinoff Joey(Matt LeBlanc). He did have thats Friends gig inbetween though.
- KiSA, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6well, then there was the new classes of Saved by the bell (I think there were two attempts, the first one they just tried to recreate every old character)
- gtfbfan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Yarrgh, Redd Foxx WAS Sanford and Son... A spin-off without him in it? Gimme a break.
I wish I could get someone to throw money my direction for such incredibly bad ideas! Wait, I probably can—isn't that called "the bubble?" - Iriel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6While I can't speak for Hello Larry, That 80's Show was a spin-off if you ask me. The concept (attempted) to be the same- make a decade era comedy show. Although as previously mentioned, they tried to do too much with the time period and not enough with the story.
Though That 70's Show really started to suck after Eric left. - Antha, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7My parents did the theme song for "Top of the Heap". I think they still have the first show taped someplace.
- Angostura, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Was Sanford & Son the U.S remake of Steptoe and Son by any chance?
Someone should do a list of U.S remakes that sucked. I once caught a U.S show called 'Reggie' which apparently was a remake (read appalling car-crash) of the sainted 'Rise and Fall of Reginald Perrin'. Why? WHY? - pcrow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Yup, I clicked on the story just to see if it made the list. I thought it would be a great show--take some incidental-but-loved characters, and give them their own show. The problem is that in giving them their own show, they changed them from cool geeks to loser nerds. The writers were looking for an audience that laughed at the characters, instead of an audience that identified with the characters, which means they were looking for a different audience than the people who already liked the characters.
Oh, and of course they'll never air the pilot episode again. - nazcreative, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Star Trek Enterprise was so bad is was unwatchable. Scott Bakula was a terrible captain. They probaly ruined any chance of their every being a new series.
- halleyscomet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@billygreen2
One wasn't really a spin-off of the other.
"Good Morning Miss Bliss" was created as a Disney produced vehicle for Halley Mills. Haley left the show. They shifted the focus to the kids and continued it without her character, retitled as "Saved by the Bell."
The "Miss Bliss" episodes were lumped in with the "Saved by the Bell" reruns with the "Saved by the Bell" intro.
Calling it a "Spin off" is inaccurate. Imagine for a moment that "Cheers" was retitled after Shelly Long's character left, but the show continued unabated, and the old Shelly Long episodes were rerun under the new title. Would you be able to call the "new" show a spin-off? - Bardiel13th, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Don't forget "Top of the Heap" the Married With Children Spin-off that bombed before Vinnie and Bobby.
- Akaji, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Colbert Report.
- graphmac1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Anyone remember the Battlestar Galactica spin-off, where Apollo and Starbuck were on Earth on hoverbikes? Ha!
- Yoggy0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Don't forget A Different World, that terrible spin-off of The Cosby Show. I suppose it was moderately successful for a little while, but it sure did suck.
- themarq, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Ruined Erin Moran's whole life as I understand it.
- sonochamp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@oddmanout
I thought I was the only one who was aware of that fact.
What I find funny is that Family Matters was almost a failure until they brought in *shivers* Urkel. - FearlessFreep, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4"Simon & Simon" wasn't exactly a spinoff of "Magnum P.I.", but it was pretty close (and they even had an episode where they met)
- b0neman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Dug not for the crap TV shows which happen every year, but for the Killing Joke link. Bad ass depressing 80's music at its best.
