- jukhau, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13youtube, internet etc. people are moving to other medias.
- cbegin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9So I was the only one having trouble deciding between "America's Got Talent" and "So You Think You Can Dance"?
- bettermentflux, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9I moved into a new house a few months back. I didn't sign up for cable right away and since the kids never complained too loudly, I never did bother. The TV is now used for DVDs and games only.
I doubt this is typical, but the fact that this upcoming generation can be weaned off of TV programming so easily can't be encouraging for the networks.
Lesson to be learned by the networks: Your business is advertising or subscription supported content creation. If you're not reaching people through the old mediums, embrace the new. Get in front of this one, guys - or be left behind. - boycy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10Media = plural of medium. Mediums is not a word. Medias is really, really not a word.
- sldSquirrel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7It seems like television is only good for Seinfeld reruns and The Office.
Anyhow, little annoyances that I feel the need to list:
-Annoying ads taking up 1/4th of the screen during programming.
-Increased volume during commercials... it's annoying to have to mute every few minutes.
-Lack of programming that isn't ***** reality or unoriginal sitcoms. I want Arrested Development back
-Excessive product placement... ugh.
- jukhau, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Well... I've been playing round with idea throwing tv away. It could maybe be used for watching dvds and stuff. Most tv-programs here in Finland are garbage, so tv is more or less just a big pipe of *****.
I guess for "new" generations and families it's not going to be so automatic that there's tv and people are watching tv-programs, internet is much more interesting media and there's all these games, dvds etc. things... is there really time for bad tv-programs? Maybe only if you want to have like one hour entertainment with real-tv dorks and stuff. - millixaw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Coming up next, the TV studios form their own **AA group: TVAA. Starts blaming pirating for low TV ratings. Sues grandmothers without TVs.
- truebullfan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5youtube? Internet? Or maybe it was just the long weekend. This really isnt a big story seeing that the record was broken from last July by only one million.
- ericeman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4This is absolutely not the end of TV... it's summer, nothing good's really on, most of that is expected- now wait for the fall TV lineup and than judge whether the medium is truly ready to go into the trash.
- mistshadow2k4, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Same here for two years now. I realized that we were only watching the educational shows on paleontology, astronomy, etc., and I can get the latest on those subjects much faster online. The only good shows and movies on were reruns. So I let my dish network subscription go and I can't say I've missed it.
- jukhau, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4boucy:
Sorry, english is not my native language. You're absolutely right. - lcarsdeveloper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4That's because Stargate doesn't start for another day or two :)
- johnsto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Oh no! Lowest-rated week ever?!! What the hell is happening? Why is this going on? When will this torture end? We call ourselves civilised, but then stuff like this happens and we realise the true meaning of the word 'suffering.' How on earth can humankind let this kind of natural disaster happen? It's awful, truly awful. An utter tragedy of huge proportions. The day it drops below 20 MILLION is the day we have failed as a species and are destined to implode upon ourselves, and life as we know it will be gone.
Oh look, a butterfly! - grungyhamster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"I want Arrested Development back"
You and I both.
Though I do have the first two seasons on DVD. - Niffer, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6I know I've officialy moved on to other mediums. No more cable, hello bittorrent!
- CornStarch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Hell's kitchen is a great show, I'm surprised so many people are missing it.
- element[0], on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I don't watch anything on TV anymore, bittorrent and a computer hooked up to your TV or projector(and media player classic + K-Lite) is all you need. No ads and nothing you don't want to watch. I would consider watching tv if there was something on that was good but here in the AU SBS and ABC are the only guys that ever put anything good on and even then that isn't very often.
However if i wanted to watch cheap, bad, mind rotting reality tv i'd be spoiled for choice. - leobaby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I BLAME THE LOUD COMMERCIALS THAT ARE ALWAYS SCREAMING AT ME!!!!!!!!
Everytime I have to turn down the television is another chance for it to stay down and my laptop to open up. - 70ny, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I can't watch NFL games on YouTube.
- SPARTACVS, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It's the summer. Summer = repeats. Repeats = low ratings.
Even during the season, I only watch like Lost, House, and The Daily Show/Colbert Report. People get way more from the internet then they ever used to before. - MalDON, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Well, have you seen whats on tv? Big Brother (crap). Supernova (crap). hell if I know whats else. Now Discovery HD has great shows, when do they not?
- groovydiggster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I too only use the TV for DVD's Improved quality of life when I dropped the cable. I kept it for a while for the news, but it's mostly repetitive stories and biased. The few good series (I like 24, and The Simpsons) can be downloaded or rented later commercial free.
- tommah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I never really watch TV anymore unless I'm in a hotel or something; I doubt I will watch more when college season comes either. The last thing I watched TV for was news and I've nearly completely gotten weaned off of it for internet sources -- they're much more efficient, I think.
- spanner, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1WooHoo!!
The net rules!!!
Either that or people are actually outside doing stuff, which is scary, where are all the white pasty couch potatoes watching the box regardless of whats on, oh theres still 20 million of them. Hurrah to everyone else... - TheNik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Shows are on hiatus. It's normal. House isn't until September, so it's expected that there will be low ratings.
- cvrefugee, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2That's because there are better movies out this summer, it's my reason at least.
- NSMike, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1We've never had Cable TV in our house - It was always broadcast TV. Personally, though, even my use of that has fallen off. I watch DVDs, mainly my DVD collection of old TV shows that I like, and play console games on my TV. I haven't sat down to watch a TV program from beginning to end in weeks. Otherwise, I use Digg for my news, no newspaper for me, a few channels on YouTube that I find worth watching for a small dose of video entertainment, play the rare XBox or GameCube game, a lot of my shiny new DS Lite, and books. I hit the movies occasionally, but not often, and I can't remember the last time I purchased a CD or music from a major record label.
I'm probably a major exception to the rule, but today's entertainment just doesn't do it for me anymore. - BauskiBruhva, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3No one watched It's "Always SUnny in Pihiladelphia"?
- JesusDeluxe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1my lineup in no order:
-Sirius Satellite Radio
-dl.tv / diggnation / twit / tiki / ninja
-youtube
-torrents/mirc
the few live tv jems will be put in front of me eventually - Araxen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I honestly think that Cable TV is vastly under reported by Nielsen. The only network tv show I watch is 24 and the rest of the TV I watch is on cable.
- dreepa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Time for TIVO. No more commericials
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1People are waking up, realizing that there is a reason they are called "tv-programs".
Time to set yourself free? - 70ny, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1TV ratings are always week in the summer.
- Ignignokt01, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1boycy, if an incorrect word makes sense in its usage, stop complaining. This is how language evolves.
- cubia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0you can only take so many spinoffs of CSI and Law and Order before its time to turn off the TV for good
- FBMGriever, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I agree with blaming the content. TV just plain sucks...
*sniff* Ever since TechTV left us there has simply been no point in turning the TV on... - thebrandonshow, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1The Internet won't replace television, some people need to get off that horse. TV ratings are always low in the summer because people have better things to do. It will pick back up in the Fall, and I'm sure the "internet media" will look to attack any ratings drop. Does a lot of TV programming suck? Sure. But I don't you any of you seriously believe the stuff on You Tube is better than what is on TV.

- Dgen_X, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1that and Rescue Me are the only "prime time" shows I'll watch right now
I don't care to see 4 american idol rip-offs, and whatever other garbage the major networks want to toss at my feet for the summertime months
I'd get rid of my satellite dish if it weren't for Adult Swim (which I can now watch online...but I'd be missing Pee Wee's Playhouse right now....) - headzoo, on 10/12/2007, -9/+1WTF? Why is this story showing up in the Digg Google widget, with only 10 diggs in 15 hours?
