- bixby1, on 11/29/2008, -3/+27And while reporting on AIDS no less. That's just sad.
- inactive, on 11/29/2008, -3/+25This is real shame..:(!
Beating journalists who are on social cause is a coward act! - replaysMike, on 11/29/2008, -13/+31What did you expect? The Olympics are over, it's time for China to get back to business as usual.
- thegrantman, on 11/29/2008, -2/+16It didn't mention how they knew that the 12 men were hired by Henan authorities.
- idavidtang, on 11/30/2008, -1/+14Yeah, don't beat people who are TV journalists from a foreign media.
- BN2L, on 11/30/2008, -0/+5Here's a realted BBC article from 2001 which explains the situation in Henan better, particularly the village of Wenlou which was all but wiped out by AIDS from infected blood. An esimated 600,000 people in the region became infected with HIV. The Chinese government has been trying to cover up this massive scandal for years.
From the article:
In the early 1990s, the provincial health authority set up collection stations to buy blood from local people. Many were infected with HIV as they gave blood. The blood was sold to pharmaceutical companies for the manufacture of blood products. It was a lucrative business that generated revenue for the local health authority as well as juicy kickbacks for officials involved. Poor farmers were drawn to the scheme for cash payments in return for their blood.

- AlienMushroom, on 11/30/2008, -0/+3It's not like TV crews haven't been robbed and beaten in the US.
- rabbitmo, on 11/30/2008, -0/+3it happens everywhere. but the magic word is "China"
- yeahaboutthat, on 11/30/2008, -0/+2While this was certainly a wrong-headed act, I sort of like the general idea of pounding the ***** out of those pathetic local and national news teams that shove microphones and cameras into people's faces after they've lost their house/loved-one/child/dog/farm and ask the inevitable, totally lame question: So, how does [that] make you feel?
- shcon, on 11/30/2008, -0/+2Brave men the muggers, the punishment for mugging a foreigner in China is death. A fact that always makes me feel safe while visiting China.
- daines88, on 11/30/2008, -0/+2@Khast - Yeah... no, you've got the basic idea, but it has nothing to do with casinos. After the Cuban revolution in 1959 Casto re-purposed "US" land (the US had control over the land because of certain wordings in the old Cuban Constitution, under the new one the US had no claim... the US even recognized the Castro government), the US got pissed and started the embargo.
- dtele, on 11/30/2008, -2/+4Not the same incident, but a TV crew was also bashed last week in Australia:
http://digg.com/world_news/TV_reporters_bashed_by_ ... - jason80, on 11/30/2008, -0/+2Where's JCVD when you need him?
- Uyraell, on 11/30/2008, -0/+2Simple fact : with a population in excess of 1.5 billion, China can afford any loss, from any disease. While it is necessary for the government to appear to the outside world to be intent on treating those with AIDS or any other disease, the simple reality is it can afford to do as it wishes, regardless of external media attention, simply because the birthrate in China is such as to exceed any potential population losses, irrespective of the actual cause, be that natural disaster or disease.
As such, any foreign news crews are under the traditionally ingrained and inherent suspicions with which China has regarded any foreigner for at least the last 3000 years. - Wrangler76, on 11/30/2008, -4/+6What a retarded story.
1. They don't say how they knew the people who robbed them were hired by the government.
2. Why the hell would the Chinese government go to such lengths to prevent reporting on AIDS, especially when they allow Yahoo to promote information about AIDS? They only try to stop things that could potentially hurt their position or reputation. Information about AIDS is not one of them. - kanundro, on 11/30/2008, -1/+3FTA:
"Locals said the attackers were county officials, the FCCC said."
Although its kind of a he said she said type of thing - alankem, on 12/05/2008, -0/+1then, WHO WAS PHONE?
- SemiSarcastic, on 11/30/2008, -2/+3Well that country has a lot of money now, so they can do whatever they want to whomever visits that country.
You Diggers also need to quit all your conspiracy ***** about China. They are a somewhat backwards country but the officials that run it are not stupid. If this is only getting small headlines in the papers that means that this sort of thing of normal. They got too much to loose because we buy all the crap they drop for us in cargo crates on the west coast and that's really the only thing keeping their economy afloat. They also have some of the greatest PR groups in the world, if something worse went down it'd still get just a paragraph and you'd never hear about it again. - palehorse864, on 11/30/2008, -1/+2Well China was expected to put up stiff competition this year and.... Hey wait a minute, this is the bad kind of beating!
- hmunkey, on 11/30/2008, -1/+2Reporting on AIDS can only help the Chinese. These reports bring awareness to Western nations, who in turn donate money and save the lives of poorer people abroad.
And you can be as douchey as you want, but everyone knows the Chinese are very poor. - inactive, on 11/30/2008, -2/+3Silly Alankem, There are no Nigras in China....
- Khast, on 11/30/2008, -3/+4Why do we even bother dealing with China? I mean we did kind of decide not to do business with Cuba just because they were "communists" China's human rights standards are way lower than Cuba's...and the leaders of China are far more corrupt.... (I know there was another *ahem* reason for our "Cuban" decision....which was probably the most corrupt part of the whole deal...)
- thegrantman, on 11/30/2008, -1/+2There are two groups;
1.The county officials..who carried out the beatings.
2.Henan authorities..who hired them.
The way it's written is a little confusing;I had to read it a couple of times to clarify it. - JKracken, on 11/30/2008, -1/+2It's doesn't work this way. 90% of the stuff you use in your everyday life are from or have something to do with China. Both US and China's economy will be almost shut down without doing business with each other. Human rights are not the prime concern, business is. You think the government send troops to Iraq for human rights? Even 5 year old kids know it's for the oil. It's a business world.
- Bigblah, on 11/30/2008, -0/+1They don't understand Chinese but they could figure out those were slave laborers?
- fearlessfx, on 11/30/2008, -0/+1Chinese Mafia = Triads.
- Wrangler76, on 11/30/2008, -0/+1You are truly stupid. So what if the article says that? Again, the government (local or national) does not look to randomly beat all foreign reporters. They only do it if it will affect them negatively. Again, your comment really doesn't answer my questions.
- Gareth321, on 11/30/2008, -1/+1Wait, China still has slaves?!
- 7Wiseguy, on 12/04/2008, -0/+0Excuse my ignorance, but what is “blood product” so I can stay the hell away from it. Specially if it is made in China.
- Gareth321, on 11/30/2008, -0/+0And what a shambles we live in. Why do we value money over integrity? I'm sure it didn't used to be this way.
- TheMachine1, on 11/30/2008, -2/+2There is a large voting block in the swing state Florida that does not want a trade relationships with Cuba. If that was not the case there would be significant trade with Cuba.
- 7Wiseguy, on 12/04/2008, -0/+0Are you serious?
- edebolt, on 11/30/2008, -1/+1it's tough for media in China any crew should know that. The PRC is regularly rated in the 5 worst countries in the world for freedom of the press. I have friends who were bicycle touring thru China 12 months ago and snapped a picture of some slave laborers working in a field. There was a sign that said no pictures but they couldn't read it because it was in written in Pinyin and were subsequently detained and grilled for hours.
- inactive, on 11/30/2008, -3/+3Everybody was kung fu fighting.
- Khast, on 11/30/2008, -1/+1Actually, Florida has nothing to do with why we don't deal with Cuba. Back in the 40s, we made an out of country "Las Vegas" styled gambling strip (WE OWNED THE CASINOS), the Cuban government at the time decided to reallocate the land for it's own citizens. Since money was lost...(Just think the chaos if Las Vegas was just ripped up...since in the 40s, the Cuban gambling strip was fairly large...accounting for about 100 million dollars income a year. (In the 40s...) To have the government just take it away in a single swift move angered a few wealthy people...and thus the embargo began.
- asya99, on 11/30/2008, -0/+0This is just sad
- Andrewmatt, on 11/30/2008, -1/+1At least they were just robbed. I'd rather be robbed than get the AIDS they were reporting about.
- edebolt, on 11/30/2008, -1/+1that's what the police told them but perhaps they misunderstood. In any case they where interrogated for taking pictures . You can read about it in their blog. Not sure where the exact page is but dig around and you will find the account of the detainment. They are from nearby my hometown in Arizona.
This is their blog and photo's.

- alex7575, on 11/30/2008, -1/+1"robbed of cash and equipment by eight men recruited by authorities in Henan province, according to The Foreign Correspondents Club in China."
"Locals said the attackers were county officials, the FCCC said."
The FCCC thiinks that the assailants were hired by Henan authorities, local residents think that the attackers themselves are officials.
I don't really see how this is so confusing. - lewystud, on 11/30/2008, -1/+1are you serious
- Gareth321, on 11/30/2008, -1/+0Your douchebaggery astounds me sir!
- ClevelandBrown, on 11/30/2008, -3/+1Someone needs to smoke reefer real bad.
- inactive, on 11/30/2008, -6/+4Funny thing is the same thing happened when a Belgian TV crew covered the Shoot at Toys R US in California. Not really funny. More like Ironic. Well it was an attempt at humor on my part. It didn't really happen. I mean it could have. But either way it's your call. I just threw out there.
- iron1, on 11/30/2008, -4/+2What comes around goes around...grrrrrrr!
