- ScornForSega, on 10/12/2007, -8/+49Yep.. it's a shame when a 3 foot droid that speaks only in a series of beeps and whistles conveys emotion better than your protagonist.
- anagoge, on 10/12/2007, -1/+28Captain. Jean-Luc-Pic-ard of the U-S-S Enter-prise.
Make it so. M-m-m-make it so. - archiecstll, on 10/12/2007, -5/+28"The only question I ever thought was hard was 'Do I like Kirk, or do I like Picard?'"
- MaximegalonInfo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+19This sounds like BS. Back in the day when Roddenberry was still around, you would here plenty of stories on how Gene hand picked Stewart himself. He wanted a thinking man's captain, not the fighting captain like Kirk. Clearly, these are the kind of TNG stories that were produced back then.
Given how Berman has tanked the franchise since Roddenberry, this smells of revisionist history to me. I mean really, this factoid is only coming out just now? Why? If such was true, Berman (and the additional "staff" mentioned) should be fired and be blackballed from the TV industry. - heffae, on 10/12/2007, -0/+19I think Stewart once mentioned how odd it was that here he is a classically trained Shakespearian actor who is now most closely associated with two of the biggest sci-fi franchises of all time Star Trek and X-Men. Just goes to show you what an incredible actor he is. From Hamlet to Prof. X.
(Not to mention every one it A Christmas Carol) - redxii, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16"40 diggs, and there goes the server. Must be an anomoly in the time-matrix continueum."
You mean a subspace distortion caused by digg particles sucking the server in? - dbanshe, on 10/12/2007, -9/+22Star Trek could always have been a bit better if they had more creative people running it. To think they almost didn't cast the best actor in T.V. history P. Stewart and after the thoughtless borefests of Insurrection and Nemesis who could argue? They need to hire George Lucas to make the next S.T. movie. Ohh wait he sucks at casting to..:o(

Also, I'm sorry we can't thrill you with up to the minute news and stories. Perhaps you should go watch Fox News instead. They do weave a pretty good piece of fiction over there.
As for the rest of us, I certainly didn't know that he was almost not cast, and I'm glad that I got to read the (short) story behind his being cast in the role that he will forever own. - JAGUART, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Right now, I'm still busy trying to forget that Matt Damon and Star Trek are being mentioned in the same sentence.

This one is MUCH better.
EDIT: Nice video, Chinzon. Good thing your name isnt Shinzon, right?
Anyway, my link is better. :) It pulled scenes from the TV show and movies.
Nice syncing.
Anyway, Chinzon, what 3d app is that? - Jerim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Maybe Ben Affleck can make a cameo.
- dbanshe, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6I was thinking more, " I'm a person, and my name is Anikan." For that matter I didn't really like Mark Hamill that much either. But Star Wars has always been able to overcome it's casting woes due to just plain kicking total ass. It's not like Star Trek can't kick ass! First Contact was an Awesome movie. Then they gave us Insurrection...WHY? WHY Star Trek? You could pick up any random Star Trek Novel and it will probably have a better story than either Insurrection or Nemesis. And the Sr. Staff Next Gen casting is Flawless to, they could do so much better.
- AdmiralAdama, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6absolutely agree. terrible choices, insulting really.
- adml_shake, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Well James Earl Jones was almost Commander Sisko, and they guy who played Dr. Bashir...
- sn0wkitty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It's interesting to note that Star Trek: Voyager almost didn't have Kate Mulgrew as Captain Janeway also. They originally cast Geneviève Bujold to play Janeway, however she bailed on the job shortly after commencing filming, and Mulgrew filled the position.
- euvirtual, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Well, if he didn't do star trek, he would just write scripts... and, judging from this video, we wouldn't want that...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UGf9Hc-KpAA - Darph.Bobo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I've seen a few unaired Voyager scenes with Geneviève Bujold and she would have tanked the series. Kate Mulgrew does Janeway right, although in one episode Kaitlin Hopkins just might have done a better Janeway than Janeway.
- DivisibleByZero, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I'm not sure people should complain about "Star Trek without Patrick Stewart". Sure, "Star Trek: The Next Generation Without Patrick Stewart" doesn't orll off the tongue as nicely....
I was always a fan of Picard being a French guy with a British accent. It seems like they're far enough in the future that the characters' ethnicities wouldn't be quite so exaggerated, or might be mixed. - serpentor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"thoughtless borefests of Insurrection and Nemesis"
That's certainly an understatement.. J. J. Abrams could have Star Trek XI involve the Ewoks and it would still be better than Insurrection and Nemesis.. - arizonagroove, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I think the story could well have merit. The person from whom is comes is said to be Robert Justman. According to Patrick Stewart it was via Justman that he got the role. Stewart was doing a reading and Justman happened to be in the audience and said to his wife something along the lines of 'we've found out captain'. This is stated in the source article linked from the story linked to here and I've seen, heard it told many times in various places over the years.
That story of discovery doesn't gel with Rodenbury having hand picked Stewart for the role. - PixelVision, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3First Contact was so good that they had to have 2 ***** ones to follow it. That's how the universe remains balanced.
- Taffaz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Patrick Stewart said himself that he didn't want to do the role. He wasn't prepared to sign up for the seven seasons that the produces wanted him too. It was a few friends who convinced him by saying it probably wouldn't make it past two seasons. Good thing they were wrong.
- Loie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1First Captain Jean Luc Picard, and then Professor Charles Xavier. Patrick Stewart is as immortal as one can get. Were I an actor, I might think that higher praise of my work than any Academy award.
- lordzadar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1hahaha.

- watership, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Gene Roddenberry wasn't the be and end all of Trek. Many people forgot that he was only really involved with the first season of TNG. 2nd season was the writers strike and 3rd season, Berman took over and Gene went into the sidelines due to health reasons. The original Star Trek series was also written by top sci fi writers while gene only wrote a few episodes.
This info is not only coming out now.. its been out for 20 years. There are a few books out that talk about Roddenberry's golden image and how it wasn't as the fans and Paramount made it out to be. - thtroyer, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Hey, Duggmirror got it. :D
- dbanshe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@MaximegalonInfo
The "Sr. Staff" I was talking about aren't the producers and such. I mean the casted sr. staff for the Enterprise in next gen. They were flawless! Picard, Data need I go on? The reason I use Sr. Staff is I don't think anyone can watch Barckley for more than a few mins without throwing up. - foolfromhell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Edit time ran out:

Actually, it didn't happen...you mean to say it almost happened. is it that hard to write properly? for a bunch of kids who are supposed to be nerds, we arent a very eloquent bunch are we?
