South Park kills 10 YouTube memes for good

valleywag.com — In last night's episode, Stan, Kyle, Cartman, and Kenny asked themselves "How Do We Make Money on the Internet?" and predictably, they find it difficult — just like YouTube. This leads to a South Park scene straight out of Viacom CEO Philippe Daumann's dreams as, one by one, the viral-video sensations that made YouTube so big are destroyed.

    This season has been pretty bad, first the Britney episode, now one on the WGA? Way to stay relevant. The WGA one would have been more clever had it aired as the Season 11 finale...back when the strike was going on. Lately it's been about repetitive jokes ("buddy, friend, guy", Britney's neck talking, H.I.V. positive).

It was trying so hard to have a message and be symbolic (that no one pays attention to what's wrong with Britney's head), that it lost the humor. It was painful.

What I've always loved about Matt & Trey's work is that there is no target safe from their mockery. When the episode started I think everyone was thinking something along the lines of "now it's Britney's turn to be in the crosshairs". Instead, they turned the crosshair on all of us. The suicide scene was a pretty damn powerful scene. After hanging on it so long they managed to pull off a hilarious moment with the news announcement of a giant squirel (aka Butters). All in all I've loved everything they've done this season. Putting the episodes all online for free has made me love them even more.

And seeing as how Matt and Trey do pretty much everything (writing, producing, voice acting, etc..) they didn't have any problem writing shows during the beginning of the strike...if the message of the latest episode wasn't clear enough for you already.

You needed the outcome of "just give us something small so it doesn't look like we're retarded" to show that the WGA really didn't get *anything* in their negotiation. Viewers need to be able to see the episode how it related to the entire WGA strike from start to end... Not just "oh, people are on strike, what will they do?"

        Also there's some video about people on the internet which the Tron guy and some others appeared in, but I'm not sure if that was marketing for a product or what. But they may have made some money off that.

All the "social commentary" is so blatantly obvious, the mediocre jokes are just repeatedly rammed into your face, and all the episodes seem to have the same structure. The freshness and creativity Matt and Trey brought to older episodes are just nonexistent at this point.
