- clownguyx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+113Best quote from the article:
Parker: Well, we grew up in Colorado. Colorado’s right next to Utah—you know, Mormon Central. My first girlfriend was Mormon, and I went to experience family home evening at her house for the first time. “What are you all doing?” “We’re sitting, and we’re singing songs and playing games together.” I was like, “Boy, that’s ***** up. Families are not supposed to be doing that.” - xtmno3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+83That might be the best quote, but I still love this statement:
South Park has set many records during its run. For instance, the 2001 episode “It Hits the Fan” broke the swearing record on TV by having characters use the word ***** a total of 162 times in a half-hour, thereby beating the previous record holder, Chicago Hope, which had used the word once in an hour-long show.
162 in 1/2 hour beats out 1 in 1 hour. Talk about shattering a record. - CrappedCrusader, on 10/12/2007, -0/+76Great discussion on free speech.
- amandaw33, on 10/12/2007, -0/+74Can we clone these guys? Seriously, they seem to be one of the very few in the entertainment business that seem to get "it"
- korhojoa, on 10/12/2007, -3/+32This is better:
"
Reason: There are also a lot of Jewish references. There’s a whole episode about going to Jewish camp, where they do silly craft projects. Did you go to a Jewish camp?
Stone: No, no. I didn’t even know I was Jewish until I was 16.
Parker: I had to teach him the dreidel song.
Stone: I’m not a very good Jew." - funnyjelo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18It is obvious these two guys are so brilliant. Its not all about fart jokes or senseless humor (aka family guy, although funny in itself), its cartoons that make you think. I like it.
- darkened, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16Definitely a great read and the article provokes a lot of thought on the issues of free speech and just our freedoms in general and how easily they can be taken for granted and get brushed under the carpet.
Seeing this article makes me quite glad that South Park has evolved to such a high status as it has become since the creators now have nearly free reign to do absolutely anything in the show and have the power to get away with it instead of just being told not to. I hope South Park runs for many more seasons. - DisposableRob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14"Seriously, they seem to be one of the very few in the entertainment business that seem to get "it"
Probably because they are the few people in entertainment (along with Kevin Smith) who don't give a crap about Hollywood. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14No, producers still suck and are probaly ***** their selves at this interview
- zephc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13trey and matt are the coolest, no-BS celebs on earth.
- lukas88, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11You are absolutely right. Those guys are easy to look up to. On one hand, mostly they are full of ***** which they will completely admit to. But they also have more wisdom than anybody in their position seems to have. I for one believe they have had a profound and positive effect on our society, and you can thank them for that even if you don't like the show.
- Ignignokt01, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13I'll probably get dugg down for this, but as great as these guys are, and as great as their attitude towards people downloading their show, you can't take the same attitude and apply it to the music industry. Hear me out, I'm not trying to bring down the awesomeness of this article, i'm just trying to make an honest point. In their case, they get paid by Comedy Central for just airing the show. For anybody paying for a service in which they get Comedy Central, watching their show doesn't cost them anything extra. They get paid based on ratings. A person who watches their episodes online is most likely a person who watches it on the TV as well. It literally doesn't reduce their profit at all, and for whatever damage it may do its likely that they get more money than lost when new fans are created from watching online episodes.
However, in the music industry, you PAY to listen to a band, whether it be on Itunes or a hard copy CD. The radio is becoming obsolete, some argue that it became obsolete years ago. TV will live on for at least another decade. I download music of artists that, before the advent of illegal downloading, I probably would have gone out to a record shop and bought or at least considered buying. Now I rarely do this, and its impossible for me to say that I'm not taking away potential profit. Now its possible for new bands to go the Indie route and still be successful, but you can't take the attitude that Matt and Trey have about downloading and apply it to the music industry. BTW, ***** the RIAA, and south park is the best show on television. - Asianwaste, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Yea on the audio commentary in one of the DVD's they were talking about how downloading music and episodes doesn't lose them 1 cent. They tell how it is. I love them for that.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12@pathdemon
RTFA? What do you think that stands for? - Lax32, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12The band Dispatch got its start by P2P (Probably Napster) when they didnt have a label. They encouraged people to download their music, and as a result had lots of success even before any labels picked them up. There a a couple other bands that encourage it, but I think Dispatch is a great example because it was probably the sole cause of their success.
- Fordi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Hm. Best arguments for intellectual individualism ever.
- ricree, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9I don't know. I really loved this quote:
'Stone: Well, that’s the other big joke. We really weren’t that brave. If it did make it over to some obscure part of Pakistan, they’d be like, “Hey, we ought to kill the guys who did Family Guy.” ' - xelloss, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Downloading the show and watching on youtube got me back into watching the show on TV lol. It does do good.
- Durrok, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Well, because as the interview goes on to say, they are so on the extreme left or right of every issue their own passion for it blinds them to anything else. Their extreme views harm them and others with similar views because people think "Woh, look at that nutjob. All liberals must be insane" and vice versa. There is also no compromising with these people either. They have their mind set in a certain way on a certain issue and there is no changing it even if things change drastically in the world.
- mistarojaz, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11actually you're retarded for knowingly saying RTFA when you meant link.
- AceTracer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6The only reason South Park exists is because of internet downloads.
I'm sure several of us remember waiting forever to download soxmas.mov so we could see those little kids cursing. - cameron074, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10good article.
- KingMoses, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Wow, over 1600 diggs for an article that suggests liberalism isn't the solution to all our problems? Either I'm dreaming or Digg is growing up.
- bat-21, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I'll probably get dugg down for saying this but it was Krishna that turned into a beaver.
- TheBlackLeopard, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6You're right. Muhammad could shoot flames out of his arms.
- uberstack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4For sure. Those guys are something to look up to.
side note...best quote: "Parker: At the end of the day, they gave us $40 million for a puppet movie." - resplence, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Are you kidding? This is the best part of the interview:
This is what happened. I was on my honeymoon in Disney World. I turned on the television, and there were thousands of rioting Muslims, and the caption said, “Muslims enraged over cartoon.” And I said, “Oh, *****. What did we do?” - resplence, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The discussion is great, too bad the article takes half an hour to get there.
Longest introduction ever. - KasperNJ, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I really liked the discussion about downloading. He said something about, that you should make a show, because you want people to watch it... Not to make money. As I see it, the money is just something on the side. It should not be the inspiration, nor the reason to keep something (in this article a show) going.
At least that is what I thought, when I read it :) - nithins, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3You gotta love these guys.
And they're right...if people really love the show they will buy the dvds.
If your show is good...the money definitely gonna be there.
Hell - i've pretty much downloaded most of the eps of the last few seasons but ended buing the first seven seasons on dvd on sale this past week! - enforcerpsu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I have always had a lot of respect for those 2, and now I have even more. They may be "comedians" but they aren't stupid.
- dontlookdown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm really glad that they said this because it's my only way to watch south park and I really think in the end downloading/internet actually helps the show's popularity.
- kirkio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Wow. This article is so much more than just a discussion on downloading online. I always love interviews with Matt and Trey.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+9I don't care for him much but 50Cent got his start through P2P clients as well
- brickfight, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I think it was kind of a generalization, but I think trey was commenting on Moore's and rumsfeld's extremism's. For the everyman, they're both a little too far to the left and right (respectively) to avoid marginalizing themselves. For the record I prefer Moore's extremism, seeing he's a filmmaker and not a policy maker.
It reminds me of when air America started broadcasting in my area. After a few weeks of listening to Al Franken's show I started to realize that he's every bit as irritating and sensationalistic as Limbaugh or orielly. - dBLiSS, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I remember that was the first time I'd ever seen South Park!!
- Wank, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm glad they approve of downloading the show because that's how I've seen most of the good episodes this past year.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Back then is was a 50 meg file... for a 5 minute crappy screen cap of a blurry VHS tape.
Codec's sure have come a long way! - Butters66, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I watch the show on Wed night, then download it at work the next day and watch it again several times. It is that good. I do this because it is free and easily available and Matt and Trey say go for it.
- ChaperonNoir, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Respect for those guys. They still risk their million dollar franchise whenever they feel like it.
They have some guts. - MYarms, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4finally an article worth reading!
- mynameisBoraT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0see this -- http://udorjey.blogspot.com
- jpcarter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Of course, the best comedians are brilliant & the best humor is intelligent humor.
- kzos, on 10/12/2007, -5/+5http://www.duggmirror.com
- ani625, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Why the hell did the network guyz make it unavailable in dailymotion.com :(
Stone n parker better work towards gettin em back online - tservold1421, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Don't get me wrong, these guys are ***** GREAT and probably have created the second best cartoon of all time. However someone needs to explain to me how at the core Michael Moore and Rummy are the same person?
- tizz66, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1They were probably on sale because everyone was downloading it, not buying it :p
I kid. - lukas88, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3You think people watch the show on TV and then watch it online? You might be right, but I think the vast majority of online watchers don't watch the show on TV. It is pretty hard to put up with ads when you know you don't have to. It is an increasing trend to just watch shows on the computer and not even have cable. I dont even own a TV any more, there is no reason to have one.
Plus, I think you are slightly missing their point. They don't say "we are in favor of people downloading" as a business strategy. They just want people to watch their shows, they have the luxury of not caring about money in this situation. - ChileanGoD, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I hope they do a Pinochet episode :p
