Is anyone else laughing their damned asses off? - Polymira, on 11/12/2007, -1/+67Southpark isn't made in flash...
Most of it is done in Maya. - UGM2099, on 10/12/2007, -0/+40You're lucky, I've been waiting my whole life for 'Charles in Charge' on SNES but I don't think it's ever going to happen for me.
- inactive, on 11/12/2007, -1/+39Actually, I downloaded the episode and it looks pretty awesome in HD, especially for the episode on weapons that they offered.
- lukas88, on 10/12/2007, -0/+33Surprisingly, shows like southpark would probably benefit even more from HD than regular programming. The places you notice HD the most are strait, smooth edges. It gives the picture a "Crisp" feeling. The whole picture is composed of these types of edges, unlike regular programming that consists of a very dynamic composition.
Let me put it this way, you are going to notice HD more with simple shapes cut out of paper (very defined edges) than a picture of a beautiful sunset (mostly undefined edges). - lukas88, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19Has anyone even found a way to rip it off of the 360? Must be DRMed to hell and back.
- TheHappyRobot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15This isn't news, that episode was available weeks ago.
- sibhod, on 10/12/2007, -10/+22"Is anyone else laughing their damned asses off?"
I'll take it you've never taken the time to compare SD vs. HD on a true HD set.
It doesn't matter the content, HD always looks significantly better. - SlvrEagle23, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12It's hard to tell what the article is implying here, but it seems to suggest the episode was never aired through the standard channels, even though "Good Times with Weapons" was aired on TV a few seasons back. Matt and Trey have mentioned that it was one of their favorite episodes because of its anime scenes, which might be why they picked it as the first to be HD.
Admittedly, South Park in HD doesn't gain much in the way of character detail, but the quality is still noticeable. The show is built entirely using 3D development environments, so despite its simplicity, it can sometimes pull off some impressive effects with little effort. - nape, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9I can't believe anyone would argue AGAINST a show being in HD. I don't care how crappy the animation is, and South Park's animation has gotten considerably better over the years, the higher the resolution the sharper and more detailed the images look. Not to mention, didn't they offer the episode free? Also, aside from the higher resolution, the episode was likely widescreen too, which fits people's WIDESCREEN tvs better.
- VeganG, on 10/12/2007, -7/+15@sibhod:
Especially animation. The Simpsons in HD is crazy. - InfinitySnatch, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Is bypass the right word to use here?
- Shuk, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11Yeah with South Park in HD you can actually see the tape in between the cardboard pieces!
- aresef, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5The episode in question was from 2004, so yes.
- wheaty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5@ugm2099
by far, that is one of the funniest comments that I have ever read on digg.
My hat is off to you sir... - GIJosh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4So, this episode is free to download? I for one am all for this if it continues. Leave it to Trey and Matt to be innovators. Those guys are genius.
- aresef, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Cartman nudity, though, not so much.
- TheNik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Most TV programming is already in a large resolution before being broadcast, then it is sized down so it can be televised. That's why most DVDs of TV shows look better than the original broadcast, especially older ones (with obvious exceptions).
I loved watching the free HD episode. South Park, contrary to many peoples beliefs, is still great in HD. - czimmerman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I thought that, too, but its not really that bad, especially considering you can start watching stuff as it downloads, just give it like a 15 minutes head start and you won't have any problems.
- Crass22, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Yeah only the Christmas Special (wasnt technically an episode, ok ok I know we're getting nit-picky here) was done with paper animation. The rest is all done in Maya.
- combustion8, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5my favorite show on my favorite console.. life is good.
- TonyTheTerrible, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2southpark has been in HD on the 360 for a few months now. they even gave one away (it was that crappy "fun with weapons" one)
- somecheesypoofs, on 10/12/2007, -8/+9no HD torrent - then it didn't happen......
- rlg420, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah I am telling you, the orange in Kenny's jacket was like the best looking orange I have ever seen.
- TimDigg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Whoa.....now I can see all the crazy detail on southpark, like maybe I can see the some of the chunks in Mr. Hanky
- Shipley, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is over a month old. it went up for download on March 6 and was heavily advertised as such on live marketplace. It was also FREE for 2 weeks, and not free now.
no digg. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's an OLD episode. That's why you're surprised you havn't heard more about it. And it didn't do anything new or unusual as far as media channels. If it was a NEW episode then you might have something here!
- Jade10145, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I will take this chance to bitch about the fact that cable channels/cable providers are not stepping up and providing enough HD channels. I have like 13, and most of them are ***** programs that I don't care about. Damn it I pay for the HD package, can you give me something! Kudo's to South Park, now if only Comedy Central would go HD!
- gage006, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It is, but I don't think it's free anymore. Occasionally I see an ad for it but it says you get the episode free if you purchase the HD DVD player from Best Buy.
- Shinnokxz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Here's the scoop on the episode:
It was made just for Xbox Live. It was not broadcasted in HD on Comedy Central. Instead of going cheap and doing a Vert- route, they actually went and recompiled the source and rendered it natively as 16:9... so we actually see more on the sides (Hor+) as oppose to the normal 4:3 episode and isn't zoomed up with the tops and bottoms chopped up (Vert-, as you see in a lot of non-native widescreen games on the PC). It's the only episode they've done, but I've heard they plan on doing more.
I know these things because I am good friends with the webmaster of the South Park Studio website. We both thought about it and both pretty much deducted that they put it on XBL to see how much interest an HD south park would net. It's a pretty episode that weighs in at about 1 GB, and if you ask me makes South Park even more fun to watch.
Peace! - bpolhemus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I can't wait for the advent of 8-bit HD, myself.
- christoscamaro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1They do actually. I've got a standard def oldschool tv. What I did was start the download on the 720p episode, cancled it after it was about 1% complete, deleted the partial from my drive, then went back in and the standard def was now suddenly avaiable to download too.
(it was 240 points or something before I unlocked it with this trick)
No need for me to download the bigger 720p version when I won't see any quality over the standard def. - Boofster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ok so to recap, the episode is not NEW, it's just an old one in HD. It is free to download and I saw no benefit to watch it in that format.
- Ebeniz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The SP movie was also made with paper cut-outs..
- st0rm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Best Buy has (or had?) a free HDDVD / DVD hybrid disc with this episode on it.
I am not sure when they got them as I do not stop by there very often, but they still have them here in Houston. - edstate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I was stunned by the XBL Marketplace offerings... if you're wondering where 'next gen' content delivery *might* come from, take a gander. IMHO the 360 might be a serious contender.
- Appox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Would be nice if they offerd HD and SD downloads.
- marcbrophy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0are all ye people mad?
south park is made using some of the most advanced computers and video creation software there is! not paper cut-outs!! it only takes 2 to 6 days to make a whole episode, unlike the 6 month average to create a simpsons episode!
this is why south park is always so up to date with current events, and also why it ROCKS!! - ricksite, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Would it be possible to re-render previous episodes in HD? I am not a Maya expert but maybe one can comment on this.
- slasherx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I remember hearing about this HD south park episode for free a few months back. I forgot to download it and I can't locate it in the market anymore. Does anyone know where it is if it's still on there?
- Icecream, on 11/12/2007, -1/+1Have an of you seen this episode before? It is Crazy CG effects all the way through, it would look awesome in HD.
- combatcupcake, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yes it is possible. Since all the animation is digital it can be rendered to any size they want. The only thing that would lose a bit would be the photo stills they often use, like Saddam and Hasselhoff 's head. But then again they probably have high res photos so it wont be an issue either.
- whytey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If you actually watched some of the new seasons you would see it's not crappy 2D. It looks alot better now and cant wait to watch this one!
- cdcdark, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3YESS!! I can finally see my favorite paper cut outs in HIGH DEFINITION!
- Smaroo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Omg South Park in HD! STRAIGHTER AND MORE DEFINED LINES! YES FINALLY!
(sarcasm) - Ebeniz, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1@VeganG
Simpsons in HD? I don't think so - WolfDV, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1hell yes . . somebody has to be able to rip these . . . come on people
- MrTea, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2***** Charles in Charge, it's all about Seinfeld.
- kefkastudio, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2I dunno bout HD, but here's a dedicated torrent site:
www.mrtwig.net
xoxo - Cyberen, on 10/12/2007, -5/+0Watching a crappy-looking show in high-definition is like listening to an Mp3 of a phone conversation through crystal-clear surround sound speakers.
