Serenity/Firefly cast turn up to cancelled convention.
whedonesque.com — There's no simplier way of putting this. Nathan Fillion, Alan Tudyk, Mark Sheppard, Jonathan Woodward, Christina Hendricks and Adam Baldwin have all turned up and are partying with fans at the hotel bar into the night at the cancelled convention Flanvention. These actors? I don't have the words.

'nuff said - Greattastic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Agreed, they seem to be great people.
- webcrumb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I downloaded the series, watched it, burned it to disc, watched it again, then bought the DVDs.
- Lososaurus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+111Now that's class.
- halikar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16You took the words right out of my mouth. Classy indeed.
- jer2eydevil88, on 10/12/2007, -3/+74Such a shame this show is gone... one of the best Fox shows ever.
- afreytes, on 10/12/2007, -5/+54I wouldn't credit Fox at all. Joss, the cast, and the crew made it what it is. Oh, yeah and the fans too (I'd never hear about it unless a browncoat convinced me to see just one episode).
- thcobbs, on 10/12/2007, -7/+16@afreytes
Someone had to front the money, studio, and air time. At least credit them with taking a risk. - inkswamp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+34@thcobbs
I wouldn't credit the studios for anything. They gave Firefly the redheaded stepchild treatment. They ran the episodes out of order, readily preemted it, interfered with the creator's artistic intent on several occasions, moved it around the weekly schedule almost at random, and failed to air a couple of key episodes (including the pilot, which they didn't run until the very end.) On top of that, the marketing of the show was almost nonexistent.
Firefly cost over a million per episode to produce, and the studios had expressed some concern about that being a little exorbitant. My pet theory is that Fox got antsy about that kind of cost (even given the track record of its creator) and intentionally derailed the show to get rid of that expense. In a lot of ways, the studios deserve absolutely no credit for Firefly at all. I think they had no faith in it and it's annoying, to some extent, that those same people now profit from the sales of each Firefly boxed set--something that continues to sell much better than any cancelled series should. - Jonas1982, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I love Firefly! I agree with all you said except the advertising bit. There are a bunch of commericials that fox made at this site. http://www.have-dog.com/firefly/
- sdh420311, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2I just to make sure all posters on this board know about firefly2.com. If you haven't been there, please visit and create a user acct with the site. They are trying to use these accts as proof that Firefly would still be marketable if it were continued. I urge any and all of you who are fans of both the series and the movie to create an acct today at firefly2.com, it may be the only way to get our show back!!!!

- Willow01, on 10/12/2007, -0/+19Nothing says thank you to your fans like showing up even though the con has been canceled. The cast and crew have the right idea.
- saska, on 10/12/2007, -1/+27This is certainly awesome. I was not a fan of the show and this won't make me one, but it does make me a fan of the actors.
The irony? If the convention had gone through, most likely the fans wouldn't have been able to mingle with the actors the way they did at this impromptu meeting. Most cons contract the actors to only allow photos with people who've paid for the privilege, ask them not to mingle so that they can get their money for the people who pay extra for panels, etc.
That said, Virginia Hey and Wayne Pygram both bucked the official doctrine at the Farscape con I went to in Portland many years back. You have to love actors who know where their bread is buttered, and who don't mind being both grateful and accommodating. - Waterflame, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Awesome! I wish they'd make another movie, or put the show back on the air! Joss needs to get another show on the air!! I'm sad just living on DVD re-runs!
- broomett, on 10/12/2007, -45/+10I've got the words..They have nothing else to do. They are not exactly in demand. It was either show upo and party with virgins, or give The Surreal Life a call begging for a spot next season.
- btgoss, on 10/12/2007, -6/+12That was a funny, if unpopular comment...
- t.toe, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15the Lost producers asked for Nathan Fillion specifically for the role they cast him in for the Fall season finale. yeah... he's definitely has-been.

- funkytaco, on 10/12/2007, -15/+3I named my web hosting business after the serenity ship ( http://www.serenityhost.com ). Great show and cast. They are are great bunch of warm-hearted people.
- tilttv, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12I know Nathan Fillion's brother Jeff in Edmonton, and let me tell you that you will not find finer, more down-to-earth people than the Fillions. I've never met Nathan but it sounds like he's cut from the same mold.
- thcobbs, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Sorry, had to say it.
it's "Cut from the same cloth."
Or as Biff once put it. "You sound like an idiot when you say it wrong" - Arbus, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3Well, if he stuck to the mold on the way out they would probably have to cut it, so he's not wrong.

- b0rg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5That's truly cool. I am such a lamer that I hadn't even heard of the Firefly TV series until after I saw (and liked) the movie Serenity. So I got a nice treat when I found out there was a whole season... but yeah, it would have been nice if it lasted. Sci-Fi is hard to keep on TV - the audience is enthusiastic but limited.
I have to wonder if they had made pretty much exactly the same TV show, but made it as a western (which much of it was), would it have been more of a ratings draw? - IMA_Sellout, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I seriously hope those guys all find work again.
- Kemo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I just found the Serenity thing about a month or 2 ago. I never watched the show when it was on. But I sat down for a couple of days and watched all the shows on Daily Motion, and I gotta admit, I was VERY impressed. I haven't dug a sci-fi show like that since TNG. Anyway, it is a HUGE shame that Fox canceled this show, it was ***** brilliant!
If we as people can come together and get Family Guy back on the air, why can't it work with Firefly?- smitty22, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Probably not, the movie was a alternative attempt to keep the story going, the problem being that it was a better end to the serise than begining of a movie franchise.
- webcrumb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I have one recommendation: buy the DVDs. If you can, watch them upscaled on a home cinema setup. DailyMotion clips won't do justice to it.
- Essefgy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Now them is some Big Damn Heroes.
My God, I love that show all over again. - thedraft, on 10/12/2007, -9/+1Well, it's not like they're *busy*
- TimoP, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1Yeah, they propably had nothing better to do.
- cprincipe, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Well, they're used to cancellation.
- CRasH180, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Oh, that wasn't right. lol...True, but still not right. :)
- mwilke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Class Acts
- drakino, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I really like the people in visible industries that still act like normal people, and not pompous asses. Pretty much most of the Babylon 5 crew were like this too, as I saw quite a few of them at conventions. They were quite sociable, including having a charity dinner where one actor was at a table with 9 fans.
- Damion, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I have to say, I was sideswiped by the series and now even more so by the actors. what a fantastic thing to do for wayward fans. If family guy can come back from the fox scrap heap so can firefly/serenity. Us fans just need to keep rattling fox's mailbox.
- Darksoul, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6broomett
lol not in demand.? Nathan was asked on for a season of lost he was already on in a series of flashbacks, he was also just in the movie slither which was awesome btw, he is filming two movies right now white noise 2 and waitress.
Alan Tudyk is filming 3 movies right now and was just on csi not long ago.
Adam Baldwin was just on daybreak for 9 episodes and is filming some other new tv series.(besides that hes a Baldwin brother)
Mark Shepard has been on tons of shows I'm to tired to name them all to name them all.
So yeah before you open your mouth next time know what your talking about I doubt you will see any of these people on the surreal life (which is a joke of a show anyway) and believe it or not moron not all people who enjoy scifi are all nerds and virgins. What it was also moron is they where staying in that hotel for a reason as where the people that paid to be there because they where there for the convention, plus they arnt stupid they know if it wasn't for us fans they wouldn't of been able to make serenity or been making money off the people spreading the word and having people buy the dvd's they are grateful to their fans how many other actors would even give two *****.
And to anybody who didn't like the show, sorry but you have no taste to me continue to watch those fake ass reality tv shows like a bunch of sheep, besides I bet alot of your points aren't relevant from anybody saying they didn't like the show as I bet you barely watched threw one episode.- LoopyChew, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Correction: Adam Baldwin is the Baldwin that is not a Baldwin brother.
- psygnisfive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0loopy: he's adopted?!
lol - ppinette, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2Please feel free to digg me down for the following unpopular opinion.
Darksoul, I'm surprised such an obviously devoted fan such as you would think that Adam Baldwin is a Baldwin brother. I know little to nothing about him and I know that.
I'm curious as to why you would assume that anyone that does not like Firefly would be in to reality shows. Is anyone actually 'in to' reality shows?
I never watched Firefly while it was being aired, mostly due to the fact that Nathan Fillion held the starring role. It's nothing against him personally, I just didn't like his face. However, right before Serenity came out, I read a post on Orson Scott Card's blog, talking up the movie. I watched it, and was thoroughly impressed. I turned at least a dozen people onto it, and several of them ended up buying the Firefly dvds. I forced myself through the series, even though there were few points where I actually enjoyed the show.
Here's what I think: Firefly has a following for 2 reasons:
1. People like me saw Serenity and gave the series a chance, and those with a diminished sense of quality accepted it because the movie was good.
2. Many misguided fans of Joss Whedon were obviously going to latch onto Firefly for dear life. Whedon had no other series in production, therefore his heartfelt attempt at a sci-fi series was the best recourse.
Firefly is riddled with the unbearable dialogue so definitive of any Joss Whedon show. The actors are b-list for a reason, and Whedon's strange directing style does not help. The die-hard fans who disregard any sort of criticism of the show are simply mindless sheep. Refusal to accept that somebody with taste could dislike such a series is ridiculous. Those who have displayed this quality have only displayed their own ignorance and stupidity.
- sleepless, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Priceless. Simply priceless....
- priceless721, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i'm not simple.
- OdinEye, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Clearly you are.
From my happy place in the basement...
- noxdineen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Totally understandable. Those were probably the smartest, most interesting characters the actors will ever get a chance to play. It's understandable that they're frustrated not to have the chance to do more with them, and admirable that they take the time to hang out with lunatic fans (like me).
- sdh420311, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5What a wonderful display of class on the part of these actors! To show up after a cancelled convention shows that maybe they really appreciate their fans, how rare in this age. Just a wonderful gesture! Congrats to all those once disappointed conventioneers who were rewarded for their dilligence.
- AgentEntropy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is one of those stories I wish I could just digg over and over again, but not in an attempt to game the system. I just think that's a very shiny story, about very shiny people.
- tylerfulltilt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0man ***** fox in their stupid heads for cancelling this show.
- BillyK, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Every time I start thinking maybe my obsession with this show is questionable, they do something awesome like this. Fan devotion is one thing, but that kind of devotion to a show that was cancelled four years ago from the cast and crew? Truly extraordinary.
- klinsek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Shiny. Those are some stand up folks. My hats off to them all, even Jewel who apparently didn't come..but she's so fine it makes up for her absence. ;)
- studio503, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What do we have to do to get this show going again? Is there no way to independently finance this show for web distribution or on a future web channel or something. The show obviously has extremely loyal fans (myself included) that would do anything to see more episodes/movies. I would donate to the production. Anybody else?
- OneAndOnlySnob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2That is so awesomely amazingly cool.
