Save John From Cincinnati Postcard Campaign! - Strax202, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1This is a great idea! A few of us have been sending Monad postcards every day to HBO for a couple of weeks now. Let's hope this new campaign really floods the gates!
- GoldenSpiral, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1This show sucked me in from the very beginning. Incredible artwork.
I was skeptical about trying to sway the opinion of HBO execs, but I can see there is a very strong community built here. I'm joining the fight! - trishah, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1DumpOut Weekend: Friday August 31- Tuesday Sept 4
There are so many great ideas out there about what to do to show HBO that we want another season of JFC. So no matter what you choose to do, or where, let's all do SOMETHING between Friday August 31- Tuesday Sept 4.
Postcards, teddy bears, 1's and 0's (paper, house numbers, etc.), petitions, letters, phone calls, protests, sit-ins, monad posters, fliers, billboards... whatever, all during the same period of time. If you are in NY or LA or have an HBO headquarters near you, what about you and your friends wearing monad t-shirts and signs and go be "John-like" at their offices?
And please, let's be visible but kind. In John we trust. - swadhisthana, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I am so f***ing tired of shows being canceled prematurely. When an artist, (or group of artists), begins to create a work of beauty, and shows the unfinished product to the world, are they not obliged to finish the job, or at least to try? As a child I wouldn't have allowed my dad to throw a story book out the window before it was finished. Isn't it unfair that the accountants decide who lives and dies in our story book world? Shouldn't the audience get a vote? After all we're the ones who've invested our most precious hours - our leisure hours - in watching, analysing, and searching the show for clues.
Perhaps there are parallels with the story of the Yosts, who brought the beautiful art of surfing to the hearts of those who otherwise couldn't appreciate it, and then took it away prematurely.
Get back in the game, HBO. - zixi, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1SAVe the frigging show!
- evanathsma, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I can't stand this anymore. Carnivale' was my favorite show. DEADWOOD was my favorite show. I would go to enormous lengths to have either of these shows renewed...even for only six episodes or two three hour movies.... But I would be perfectly happy never knowing what happens to Ben Hawkins or Al Swearengen if we could just have ONE MORE season of John from Cincinnati. I've actually been inspired by this show. Creatively... Spiritually... Emotionally... this show touched me on such a deep level. We need to start banding together on these things. HBO and the other television studios need to understand that you must give the people what they want... We need to start demanding that they give us the high quality, intelligent programming that they promise in every add. I mean, sure it's innovative to put a show like JFC on the air in the first place. But it's truly meaningful, artistic, and contributing to the level of intelligent entertainment and art in America. this whole, give us something beautiful and then take it away before it's finished, thing is too damn much. WE MUST DEMAND THAT THEY GIVE US WHAT WE ASK FOR! WE MUST DEMAND THAT THEY GIVE US WHAT WE PAY FOR!!!!!
- JumpyPants, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Volume is the only thing that will get through to the cash-counting skulls at HBO. The more postcards, teddy bears, monad posters, etc. they receive, the more likely they are to realize that this is a show worth renewing.
- stringrazor, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1What a bummer. Sunday night came...and went with no new JFC, not even a promise of another season. JFC is a great show, widly different and entertaining. Why HBO can't see that is beyond me.
HEY HBO, BRING BACK JFC! - Eterea, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1How many more diggs you still need?
Who could make another video and post it on YouTube? - brookster, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Let's band together and get a second season underway. I love this show.
- flashfreaker, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Bring back JFC! I made my own postcard doctoring up the original poster. View it at http://blogs.flashsupport.com/robert/?p=135. I also made this comment on another site:
What is up with HBO? I’ve been a loyal subscriber to HBO via Comcast (Portland, Ore.) and Adelphia (Los Angeles) for over eight years, and I’m sick of HBO canceling unfinished shows. Carnivale, Deadwood, and now John from Cincinnati. I don’t know why HBO can’t give these types of shows a better chance–I think the execs just want total smash successes out of the gate within the first season, but hey, the world doesn’t work that way any more! We have PVRs, Tivos, DVD releases, and so on. We don’t watch TV the same these days, HBO. I only started to watch John from Cincinnati this past week with Comcast On Demand, and I watched the whole first season in about four nights. HBO, do you know why I only watched the first season after it aired? My first baby daughter was born this summer, that’s why! Maybe you should take into consideration THAT portion of your aging demographic too, when it comes to why it might take more time for a new show to gain momentum. You’ve disappointed me, HBO. I don’t know if I’ll give ANY new series from you another chance–maybe it’s time to switch my subscription dollars over to Showtime. - 3point1four, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I have had favorite shows in the past. The Shield... which has about 900 other cop dramas that can sub in and out when it's not on. Heroes... which is basically XMen. Sopranos... which is every mob drama. A bunch of stuff on ESPN... which come and go... BUT.. John From Cincinnati is SO RADICALLY DIFFERENT and SO SPECIAL that I am actually saddened by it's cancellation. I seriously would be pissed if other shows I enjoyed were canceled, but at least I could go and find something else that was somewhat like it to fill the void somewhat. JFC is like nothing I've ever seen and made me so anxious to see each episode I found myself pacing and doing stupid chores to pass the time until the show started. Now that it's gone all I want to know is why?
Not why it's canceled, but why I should ever get into another "groundbreaking" new series? I couldn't have become a bigger fan of JFC in its first season and now it's gone. It certainly was groundbreaking but it's seriously painful to know that something that brightened your days and left you laying awake in bed wondering what's going to happen next will never have a next.
Why shouldn't I wait until the series is over and just buy the DVDs? It isn't much of a cost if you figure that a season costs what? $100 bucks? Rent the first season, watch it over the weekend, if you like it, rent/buy the others. There is NO REASON AT ALL to give a new show a shot.
ALL networks are creating a self fulfilling prophecy.
Network: "If this show's not doing well we should cancel it."
Viewer: "If this show's not doing well they are going to cancel it regardless of how good a show it is.... I'll wait and see if it makes it before I give it a shot."
Network: "Looks like nobody's watching it... cancel." - funderstruck, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I love this show and Milch is a genius. Lets get this back!
- gparkla, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Why!!!! This was a one of the only shows that made you really think and wonder and believe. I can't express how disappointed I am that HBO canceled JFC. What does it say about the general public that when challenged to use their imagination they turn away. Lets get this show back, puh-leeasse!
- rajunz, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I absolutely love this show, HBO needs to bring this back for more seasons.
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y278/rajunz/monad2.jpg - funkybunky, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1What a bitch HBO is! This show is definitely one that could grow in popularity but they didnt give it a chance.
- princeofsax, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I feel cheated.. after putting time and thought into following this show, I am really going to miss it. This was the first time in years that I'd followed a serial TV series... I guess it will be a few more years for me again.
- gomerroamer, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1PLEASE DIGG THIS!!
- jendayconure, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0These are all big ideas and a huge effort by Trishah. Thanks Trishah! Another thing we can do is to log onto Amazon.com, search John From Cincinnati, and: 1. Give it a rating. 2. Check the box to be notified when the DVD becomes available. 3. Pre-order the DVD.

and buy some JFC merchandise from HBO. I just got 2 great Ts and a hat. If lots of people do this, that'll send a message, too! - Lucille2, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Love!
- dalkaveli, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Keep it goin! Lots of great things being said by you people. I think this is the best show I've ever watched, partly due to the fact I hate the garbage on tv. This was different, for those who understand the issues and the esoteric overtones you knwo what I mean by that. Proactive 01010101010010001001010101111001010101001010010100

- zachsav, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0John from Cincinnati was one of the best shows ever made because it lingered in your mind and actually affected your life. It was more than entertainment. It soaked into your soul. HBO has made some spectacular programming... Deadwood, Rome, Wire, Carnivale, Sopranos. But they have killed any credibility with me when they cancelled JFC. To allow Milch to create this unusual show and then tear it from us is unfathomable. Why make it in the first place? Surely they knew it was unusual and quirky and strange and wonderful in a non-majority way. Why not let it continue to build what is surely one of the most devoted fanbases in 10 episodes ever? And surely it wasn't so expensive to make like Carnivale or Rome that it was a great show but cancelled due to budgetary reasons. NO EXCUSES HBO! Hear your customers! BRING IT BACK! It doesn't need to be a Sopranos phenomenon to be worthy of play!
- Lucille2, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0I absolutely love this show, HBO needs to bring this back for more seasons. http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y278/rajunz/monad2.jpg
That? Is awesome, rajunz.
The ratings steadily increased over the course of the season. The finale had 3 million viewers. Why do they hate us?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_from_Cincinnati#_ref-2 - appliedpsych, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0This is a copy of a letter sent to HBO & Time Warner Execs Related to Deadwood and John from Cincinnati Cancellations. I’m a psychologist, thus the lead in paragraph.
Dear HBO & Time Warner Executives:
I’m beginning to become concerned for you. If HBO was a patient, I would look at is as if you have been a high-functioning, successful individual who, inexplicably, has developed a nasty set of self-defeating and self-sabotage behaviors which are alienating everyone around you.
First, you hire creative genius David Milch to develop great shows for you. He creates two great shows, Deadwood, and John from Cincinnati. What does HBO do? They cancel both shows with no audience preparation, no notification, and no explanation.
Now, from what I read online (the Internet is HUGE), you have tasked Mr. Milch to follow on with the development of yet another series, this one about 1970’s cops. Also from what I read, Mr. Milch has taken a forward-looking approach to HBO decisions, and is moving to meet his business agreements with you in a gentlemanly and gracious manner. I am sure that any show that Mr. Milch develops will be great, as all of his shows have been, including Deadwood and John from Cincinnati.
I ask you executives with all sincerity - why should any viewer now take the time and effort to tune in to such a new Milch series? I’m sure you can wordsmith a generic, soothing, and ***** answer for me, but the reality is, you have no good excuse for your past actions which now puts all new HBO series in jeopardy.
HBO has now set up a clear pattern of behavior in the minds of viewers:
1) Have creative genius develop great show
2) Get viewers interested, excited, and hooked
3) Cancel series unceremoniously with no warning
HBO has been 100% predictable in this pattern with both of their Milch shows, so why would anyone think they would not do so again?
Even though the (non-Milch) Soprano’s ending riled many viewers, at least you gave us the courtesy of plenty of warning that the end was going to occur, as well you should with ANY series.
People can forgive disagreeing over a plot line, or even a planned series conclusion, much better than they can forgive a pattern of discourteous, rude, and un-businesslike behavior of unpredictably cancelling great shows.
Yeah, maybe the networks do it, but HBO is supposed to be better than that. (It’s not TV, it’s HBO).
The subscribers’ of HBO are your customers. It is as if suddenly you are not concerned whatsoever with your customer service style. Businesses who lose sight of customer service and alienate their customer base always suffer. We, your current customers, and I echo the sentiments of many, are quite upset with your actions on both Milch shows. Three million viewers and growing, on both shows, and that’s not enough for you?
You built your business on attracting and pleasing customers. Now you are alienating potentially millions of your current customers. Word of mouth is a big force, and we do not have many good things to say about your recent patterns to help you attract new customers.
It would be a shame for the groundbreaking creative and business models of HBO fall prey to whatever is ailing you. God knows you are facing increasing competition from other pay channels, from FX, CW, Fox, and even from the big three networks.
You have a great creative mind in Mr. Milch - but micromanaging his efforts is not the way to go. If you really want to set HBO apart as a great creative business force, with the great asset you have in Mr. Milch, you have to give him free reign. YOU need to listen to HIM, not the other way around! Why did you hire a creative genius, only to circumvent his efforts by over-riding his creative energy? Like I said, self-defeating, self-sabotaging behaviors.
Let him resurrect both Deadwood and John from Cincinnati if he wants, and give him the creative freedom to do the work he does so well. Hell, charge us more, I’m willing to pay more for quality programming! I am also sure that other creative financial support could be developed if you set your corporate mind to it.
You know without a doubt that you have audiences for both Deadwood and John from Cincinnati, an audience base that could be cherished, nurtured, grown, and developed over time. You have chosen twice to circumvent your success with these audiences, apparently choosing instead to seek some ideal audience numbers, demographics, critic’s happiness, profit margins, and other characteristics that may not even exist except in your corporate dreams.
Instead of working where you’re at to build success, you at HBO seem suddenly more interested in starting from scratch again and again. Do you have a case of corporate ADHD or what? I don’t know what your problem is, but I hope you seek some sort of help to heal yourself. As JFC would say “work here HBO” or maybe “see God HBO”.
Failing that change of corporate heart, then perhaps you can at least COMMIT to three seasons of the new program Mr. Milch does develop – and plan to give your viewers at least a seasons notice BEFORE you end any HBO show.
If you don’t do that, I predict a continued decline for HBO, because viewers will just continue to lose faith in the stability of your programming, and choose to view elsewhere rather than subject themselves to the continued frustration and disappointment that you have given us by cancelling Deadwood and John from Cincinnati. We got our eyes on you! - bakemacbird, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0I haven't been this bummed since Yoko showed up.
- appliedpsych, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0I found this site that ships honey comb. I'm going to send to some honey to the HBO execs. Jericoh was revived with peanuts, JFC might work with honey and postcards, etc. Here's the link.
http://www.durhamsbeefarm.com/comb-honey.htm - holysin, on 10/10/2007, -0/+010 01 10110101 110 0011 011 0111 01. Here's hoping postcards help.
- flashfreaker, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0It sucks big time that HBO has caused so many of us to doubt how we go about investing time into a subscription channel's series. I watched the last episode two more times with Comcast On Demand, just to make sure I wasn't off my rocker with my feelings for the show. Well, it REALLY sucks because I like the show even more now, and knowing that HBO won't bring it back sucks. HBO's been such a trusted brand for me, and to be COMPLETELY let down like this is just horrible. I feel like a kid saying these things. I've already told my wife we're switching our subscription to Showtime after Big Love's current season finishes. Weeds, watch out! Here I come! (I, like others on various JFC forums, believe that the only way HBO is going to know how big of a deal this cancellation has caused is to hit 'em in the pocket book. There are no advertisers to suffer for this loss. Only subscribers.
