- seanatki, on 10/11/2007, -2/+46So I'll probably get dugg down, but here goes anyway. You should really consider buying these instead of getting them from the "usual" sources. The only way this project will survive is if enough people purchase the episodes.
- Eugenia, on 10/11/2007, -1/+18They sell the webisodes for $2 each (click on "store"). Not a bad idea, it's same price as iTunes.
- JCSaint, on 10/11/2007, -1/+18This has the potential to be extremely cool. Can't watch it till I get home but does anyone if there are going to be ads? How else would they make money?
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -4/+14They released to youtube and it in the torrents. But if you want HD you have to pay 2 bucks, or go to _________.org to download it.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10This is why advertising is a good thing.
- daborg, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10"I guess maybe when I was 13 or so I would have liked it though."
Which is why you will get dugg down, down, down. :-) - rhinopig, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9Ok, yeah selling episodes is a good idea but if they think I'm gonna pay money for a show I've never seen they are crazy. They need to put atleast one full episode online for free.
- PDelahanty, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9Frankly, I don't care if you bookmarked it or not. If you like it, digg the article. Telling us you dugg it or bookmarked it via a comment is just redundant and annoying. I always digg those down.
- akiramedia, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9Great distribution concept. I hope that they can make enough money to do more shows.
I wonder what the chances would be of seeing a Global Frequency project like this. - Griiih, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9rhinopig the first four episodes are going to be online for free. You can find them on Youtube and Google Video
- 1021, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9flash effects seemed pretty good (especially the player), that's one talented 3 year old.
- hiPpymIck, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8brighter version
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6K-v4MJScz0 - popothebright, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9Let's do some math on this "New Distribution Model"
Let's say, for the sake of argument that I follow 6 television shows currently, and I watch those shows once per week (each).
That's 6 shows a week or 24 shows per month.
Now let's say that each of those episodes costs $2.
That's $48 a month.
I'd say this "New Business Model" SUCKS for consumers. I can't believe you people are embracing it with open arms as
if this is something "cool". The networks are looking at this and PRAYING it works. And those of you who watch 12 - 15 shows
a week? Well you're going to be broke with your $120/month television habit.
Dugg down for being another way things are getting worse in the name of "technological improvement". - qevlhma93, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8Episode 1 was great!
Cannot wait for more. - popothebright, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8Oh, and just wait until you're paying $2 for an HD episode that *comes with commercials* embedded also...
- fatdog789, on 10/11/2007, -2/+10The HD for $2 isn't DRMed. Non-HD is available for free so you can always preview to see if it's worth it.
So really, what's your excuse for not shelling out $2 for HD? - norman619, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9I have to agree. This show looks very promising. 2 dollars per episode is not asking too much. I hope it makes enough money to attract others to do the same thing. This thing looks better than most of the broadcast scifi shows we have today. I for one will do what I can to help support this show. It's pretty lame that there are peopel out there who will still pirate this. Like they are too broke to afford $2....
- ShoggothDreams, on 10/11/2007, -3/+10I think it's great and all, but it is QUITE hardly the 1st. That is kind of a slap in the face for Genetic Crime Unit, Dark Commandos, Star Trek: New Voyages, Pollcheck Chronicles, Xombie, Star Trek: Hidden Frontier, and countless others that came years before.
- darthsuo, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7I don't understand
why you insist on talking like this
but it doesn't really matter
because no one cares what you think
my opinion - Babel33, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7Only watched the trailer due to being at work, but it looks better/cooler than I expected. I'll probably watch it tonight instead of going out. Did I just reference the introvert article? I think I did.
- futureisours, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6At least this will pave a way for better series in the future. You can only hope that maybe Straczynski or Whedon would find it easier to create a new series in the Babylon 5 or Firefly universe withouth having to face the scrutiny with clueless network tv.
- PatrickHenry, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6I have to agree, I was thinking the same thing! it would be great for Whedon to expand on this concept with a new firefly series. The down side, however is that the former cast has found new work. Sigh....
- BrokenClock, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7Take note. I guarantee the same people wanting it for free will be the first ones to complain if it gets cut.
- arturo227, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5To those getting the show from the "usual sources" (torrent sites or what have you):
Just curious what it would take for you to purchase an independently created TV-type series. I understand the normal justifications (not wanting to support the big media conglomerates; protesting DRM; wanting to control how you use your media; outrageous prices, etc.) - is there another issue you object to, or is there something an independently created series could do to prompt you to pay for it?
Very curious because I'm working on a series right now and plan to publish over the Internet and want to figure out if it could be viable financially. - lordthor, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6ep.1 http://youtube.com/watch?v=pEuLxZerb0s
- Mischa, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Oh sweet,
we just interviewed one of their cast members last week, Emilie Ullerup. She was a grad from Vancouver Film School and she sat down with us to talk about working in an all green screen environment. Pretty cool stuff. She also starred as the mother of Starbuck's supposed child in Battlestar.
Quick blog link to her story;
http://www.vfs.com/blog/2007/05/11/find-sanctuary/ - Dillenger69, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4looks ok, just not $2 for 15 minutes ok.
I'd sit through ads to watch it for free. - majin23x, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5I usually get shows from the "usual sources". I don't have cable, or even broadcast television at my house, so the "usual sources" are where I go for everything. But I will pay for this because it's independent. I do think that $2 for an episode is a lot. I mean, if/when I buy DVDs of a series, it usually comes out to slightly less than $2 an episode, and I have a physical DVD then.
I will be buying this mainly to show my support for broadcast quality independent web distributed content. - muhadeeb, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4don't throw the baby out with the wash water. Its only starting , give it about 4 o5 more Eps.
- ShadedSpriter, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I got what I thought was an None-HD version of the show through torrents...I wish it was none-HD instead of HD because my computer is slightly too slow to handle the file
It is a good first part...I can't wait to watch the whole mini-series...I will be buying a DVD of it when it is out. - AlphaEta, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I think you're right pop.
As it stands, this pricing arrangement makes it prohibitively expensive to watch more than a couple shows a week, but I don't mind paying a few bucks it it's going to be worthwhile.
Hopefully, as more shows go online, market pressure will force prices down and make them more affordable. That being said, if I can watch a lower resolution version for free and then pay a little money for an HD version if it's good (which seems to be the model for this SciFi series), I don't think that's too unreasonable. - norman619, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Please name a successful scifi movie or series which did not have conflict in it? Give me a break. Like people really wanna see a show where there is no conflict....
- AlphaEta, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Hey, thanks for listing all of those.
I hadn't heard of most of them, but I'm definitely going to check out their content. - Tripcast, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3@ShoggothDreams
I think what they mean is that this is really the first to have internationally known actors, who will bring their own audiences to the show. Visually, the trailer looks amazing, downloading the first episode now - but if it's good enough, it's not that expensive - I might buy it.
Another good thing is because it has no ties to any network, censorship is not a major issue - hopefully the producers will be able to self-censor anything too bad based on their audience. And it means there is no overnight wait to get US programs here in the UK, it'll be available at the same time. - adinu79, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3They are free to watch, on Youtube, and there's also a slightly better version on Veoh, both officially uploaded as they are linked from the website.
- AlphaEta, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Well... when people stop making online content like this we'll know that cheap bastards such as yourself are to blame.
If you want it in HD, just pay the $2. Otherwise, please don't be a thief and ruin it for the rest of us. - adinu79, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4It's not getting worse, what more do you want? It's cheap, it's non-DRM, you can watch it however you want, on whatever device you want, backup it to a DVD, I mean, come on, you will pay almost that the same for a non-DRM song from EMI on iTunes. I actually welcome this, i believe it's the way TV stations should do it in the future. This way I can get my Heroes fix in Romania too, as nobody outside the US is able to view the shows on the NBC website and nobody's showing it here yet.
- dalecraig, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Just a thought for you people that are discussing the price. $2.00 per episode is very expensive. The cost to deliver movies and tv shows to the public is very expensive for "middlemen" and profitable. For movies, the theatres, and dvd makers and distributors, they're making a killing. TV shows generate gigabtic costs for networks that they pass on to us. All these things are eliminated with this new forum. The producers of this show have no competition as yet, and so have priced these episodes according to the market. But, when the competition comes you will see these shows priced for 10 cents on the dollar. It's just a matter of time.
- Vazel, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Series doesn't look awesome, looks like something I'd watch on the sci-fi channel when I have nothing else to do, but I think I'll buy a few episodes because I love this idea.
- Kinjiru, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I nabbed the 1st ep of this in HD via torrent.. (website wasn't working at the time plus flash sucks).
I'll get a chance to watch it later tonight and post my comment on it then.. if it's good then it's worth supporting
but w/o seeing it (and trailers do NOT count!! How many movies have you ever seen the trailer for that looks good but the movie is a POS?)
As for distro.. given today's tech it should be released as x264 codec encoded in both MKV and AVI containers. (that way it stays out of greedy patent holders paws etc as well) ie: No WMV *****
And of course any sort of DRM would be a huge no go for me.. they DRM I pirate..it's that simple. - zyrotin, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Unfortunately, although GF was awesome, it'll never happen because the rights to the show are locked up.
- TKDWILSON, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2It would be nice if they used advertising for money as an option instead of cash. Offer the same episode for free but with a banner at the bottom like the networks do during their programs, or a short commercial in the middle. By the way, the site is too fancy. I don't like all the crap they put on there. Make a simple interface for these shows.
Eric Wilson - rhinopig, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Yeah, I just watched the first ep on youtube. It is pretty good. I might actually consider paying for some, although 17 minutes is a bit short. I'd definitely watch it regularly with ads if I didn't have to pay for it.
But I don't think those uploads are official. My point was if they want to sell more videos they should put an official free episode on the main site. If the youtube uploads are official I still wouldn't have known about them without reading these comments and based on the trailer on there site wouldn't have gone to search it out otherwise. (and after watching the first ep, which did have good production values, they might consider putting up more, like the first 2-4, to draw people into the plot. The first episode didn't really get deep enough into the plot to get me 'hooked' but did peak my interest.) - BGONeill, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2$2 isn't much considering you get to keep the episode so it's pretty much like buying the boxset 1 episode at a time anyway.
- unusualbob, on 10/11/2007, -3/+5im just gonna wait and watch SG1 & atlantis tonite.
- heiroglyph, on 10/11/2007, -3/+5"The trailer look strangely like a bad mix of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angle... Is it just me."
I don't mean to be obtuse, but did you mean Angel?
Sorry, I thought it was acute joke. - OdinEye, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2While I'm all for the market driving the price down, I'd much rather pay a premium for a very few good things to watch per week than to pay cable rates for 400+ channels playing mostly utter crap.
If you are truly watching 12-15 shows per week I'd suggest opening the door and re-discovering the existence of the real world. - OdinEye, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2@pdelahanty
Are you watching the same Heroes that I am? The show rocks. - mistafreeze, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3this is not hd, its SD, 720x405 @ 24 fps (just bought the bundle and starting converting to watch on atv). Oh well, looks cool. You can buy the bundle for 7 dollars, not a big deal. (sadly only one ep available currently)
and to the guy who says if you watch 6 shows a week = 48, how much are you paying for sat/tv
last season I tivoed my favorite shows, then bought the dvds, now I can just buy a season pass from itunes and watch it when i feel like it. so 40-80 dollars a month sat bill + 45 a season * 4 (if you wanted to own them), say 5 months to view = 200 - 400 for the bill, and you do not own the shows, and you do not support the shows. add 180 for the dvds (4 shows at 45 a piece) and you have invested 380-580 dollars. or you could buy from iTunes or amazon for 40 a show, and buy it one time. So for the price of the low end cable bill (40 dollars a month) you could own the show, and have 40 dollars left over if you only watched 4 shows.
And the best part, your supporting the show, and not your cable company who will raise prices every few months.
I watch 3-4 shows max at any given time. Who has time to watch 12 shows a week. - daborg, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Yeah there's nothing sci-fi about this stuff.
