- iamdw, on 10/12/2007, -1/+27Unfortunately I'll have seen the entire season (or at least 1st half?) by then here in the States. Again, a truly good example of how the internet and localization of programming are out of sync.
I jumped on in series two, and quickly caught up, and before the last episode of series two on Sci Fi, i had already finished series one AND two. There really need to be some sort of balance when an alternative viewing availability is an option. Perhaps that's why the BBC is experimenting with legit options online... - adml_shake, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16They need to try and pick up Torchwood. I don't think it was as good as Dr. Who but it wasn't bad.
- rustchild, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13David Tennant is by far my favorite Doctor yet, and the new girl is also quite good. So far the third season's been fantastic - good choice by the sci-fi channel!
- jcenters, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13You apparently missed them.
- Kevinok, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Great show, so far the third season is awesome.
- paulisnotdead, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13or you could go to tv-links.co.uk ( if you hate waiting)
/not spam - erkayae, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9The most recent episode was a cracker
- supermanred, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Not to mention that Doctor Who fans like myself are forced to download lower-quality torrents. At least BBC "gets it" and is starting an online stream/download service with high quality HD downloads. I would gladly pay a buck or two to view a HD quality download, as would most people gladly pay a bit more (than free) and a lot more legal (than pirated torrents) for any I.P. that they enjoy.
- thedalek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Abruptly kill? I think your dictionary's broken. SG1's got 10 seasons under its belt, Atlantis is a fairly decent spin-off series, you've got upcoming feature films, and a there's a second spin-off in development (Stargate Universe). It's pretty clear that SciFi is not pulling the plug on Stargate, but rather, the executive producers of Stargate want to explore new places in the Stargate world. Honestly, after 10 seasons, I think it's time to move on.
And while BSG's fourth season is rumored to be its last, that fact has not yet been completely confirmed, and nothing's certain until it actually -airs-. Doctor Who is a perfect stop-gap replacement for these shows while they're filming upcoming seasons: It's cheap (for SciFi anyway), it's already fully produced, and it's got a built-in audience. Online piracy or not, the show's pure icing from an ad revenue point of view.
SciFi makes some serious blunders when it comes to programming (Like cancelling Farscape or The Invisible Man, or not turning The Lost Room into a full series), but BSG and SG1 are far from cancelled. - modulo1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7@thecash
Then if you haven't seen it already, may I recommend Torchwood. Torchwood was referenced numerous times in the first and second seasons of Doctor Who, with the 2nd season finale taking place in the Torchwood building itself. The Torchwood TV series takes place in Torchwood: Cardiff, and features Captain Jack as the leader of a group of agents.
Imagine Doctor Who meets the X-Files, and that is a fairly good approximation of Torchwood. Season 1 finished a short-while ago on BBC4.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/torchwood/index_nonflash.shtml
edit: missed that last bit comparing the two Captain Jacks :) oh well, either way, someone I'm sure will check out Torchwood who hasn't already. I know I love that show. - scuvball, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I watched all the episodes a couple weeks ago. I thought they were fantastic, but they are way too mature to be shown to American audiences. A bunch of rednecks would get that show either taken off the air or extremely edited.
- andrewcool, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Its already on BBC...
- TheCash, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I like Torchwood, except now I'm convinced that everyone in Cardiff must be bisexual. That, and Owen annoys the ever-loving crap out of me. So does Gwen for that matter... what she did to her bf towards the end of the season was just wrong on so many different levels.
That being said, I really liked the show and have to say my favorite ep so far is the 'Alien Eye' one, with the guy who played Private Blye in Band of Brothers. Seeing Gwen through his rose-colored perception actually made me even like her a little.
Can't wait to see the reunion between Jack and the Doctor. lol... can't wait for the doctor to tell Jack what happened to Rose for that matter either. - Dumbledorito, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Well, Captain Jack is supposed to be from a century where everyone sleeps with everyone. For all the rest, it just seems... forced. Especially when it happens episode after episode.
I'm not saying there's anything wrong with exploring sexual issues; It's just annoying when a concept seems orchestrated and shoehorned-in just for the sake of doing it. - iamdw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@supermanred,
I agree, i would gladly pay a sensible fee to watch quality video of Doctor Who and many other show not available here in the states rather than wait for them to air months later. For example, on BBC alone i watch Doctor Who, Life on Mars, and Torchwood. I hope the online download service rolls out soon, i'm very interested..
@technopops,
Dam... er, good? heh... - TheLoneWolf071, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Yay! I like this new guy. Look forward to watching.
- Dumbledorito, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6I just hope the producers got all that "let's put everyone in a sexually tense and/or homosexual conundrum every episode" stuff out of their system.
- Eazy~e, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Eeehmmm the whole "bad wolf" thing does get explained. No spoilers here, but the references to bad wolf in different time periods was the way the universe (or tardis) showed Rose that she and the Doctor were connected. The universe (or tardis' heart) had a plan and needed to push Rose and the Doctor into the situation and show them the way out.
/end nerd. - adml_shake, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8I'll have seen it also, same with the first and second seasons. But I still watch when it's on Sci-Fi. You can't get enough of the Doctor.
- AlMightyBob90, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Brilliant show, glad to see it get a more worldwide audience. I think I have a feeling of national pride coming on...wait...never mind. I just remembered that we have chavs/neds. Oh well.
- Dumbledorito, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@TheSaladMan: Daleks aren't bad, so long as they've got a plan to do something with them (which they appear to be making an efford to do).
However, "new" isn't always better on Who. Given that most of the aliens look like something one sees on an LSD trip, it can be hit or miss.
And I KNEW I'd seen a monster in a businss suit on Who before. What was that one cactus alien called? He took over some Arthur Dent type dude's body. I know it was a Tom Baker ep, and I think it was one from the "Key of Time" series... - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Almost guaranteed that sci fi will drop the show. That's what they do with popular shows.
- memsom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@technopops
13 episodes is a standard series length in the UK. Just because the US does, like 20+, doesn't mean we have to ;-) Quality not quantity.
Note, we also get a complete run in this country. Our networks would never show a series like in the US, 2 episones, reruns, 4 episodes, reruns, etc. This is one way in which I think British TV gives the perception of "quality". It's the same old contrived rubbish, but we don't water down the seasons, so there is no start/stop that seems to plague US TV. - joeydoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The Lost Room was very very good. A full series would have been great. But I fear that it's a tough sell in the usual little promos. It's too random.
Something like Lost has the wacky random sci-fi, but it's an easy sell, they have a load of attractive people running around killing each other in a tropical paradise. The first season of Lost was basically sold on Kate standing on the beech in her underwear.
Sadly the Lost Room doesn't have the easy hook. - modulo1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I hope they show the Christmas episode "The Runaway Bride". Takes place directly after the season 2 finale (when the Doctor leaves, and looks up and there's a strange woman in the TARDIS, and before season 3 premiere (before we meet the new 'companion'.) It's like a stand-alone Doctor Who episode. Singular plot line that is resolved in one ep (iirc), with a companion only referenced briefly to in one previous episode (the very end of season 2).
I found it to be a very well-done and absolutely hilarious episode. I wonder if Sci-Fi will even show it, since technically the season starts with Smith and Jones, and if we're to expect 2 seasons of the new companion like with had with Rose, then showing the episode at the end of the season (presumably around xmas) would seem very out of place, since most of us (I know I did) will remember the heart-wrenching end of season 2 and the appearance of the bride at the very end.
Oh well. I hope they show it. Great episode. But if it doesn't air before Smith and Jones, it's going to feel very out of place (I don't remember if there was new canon introduced, I'll have to watch it again.) because of the disconnect between the season 2 finale and the season 3 premiere. - TheCash, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Already watching it now, so who cares what SciFi does. I've already watched SG-1 and Atlantis too, so I haven't had a reason to flip to that channel since Battlestar went to reruns.
All I can say about this season of Dr. Who is: I reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeally miss Rose, almost as much as the Doctor does. The new girl is fine and all, but her pupply-love crush on the doc annoys me/makes me miss Rose even more.
Miss Cap'n Jack too for that matter. I like Doctor Who Jack a lot more then the bitter, moody Torchwood Jack. - TechnoPops, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5> Unfortunately I'll have seen the entire season (or at least 1st half?)
Nope, the whole thing, since they went with a 13-episode run again. - Dumbledorito, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I dunno... monsters never look scary in business suits.
- MattGrover, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Isn't this technically Season 29 though?? And I'm not even a fan!
- scuvball, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3That's true... Every character on the show has been in a bisexual situation or gay. I find it funny that all of the English character's are bi and the american was gay, unless I missed something? I actually got quite uncomfortable watching those parts of the show.
- PlaidPhantom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2A few times. Mostly though there's just a lot of inter-episode references, as well as some sort of sinister sub-plot that doesn't really get confronted. The whole "bad wolf" thing.
- lengau, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm not really sure if it's a good thing that the exact same thing went through my head.
- orientis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Dumbledorito : Exactly. It was totally forced.
Scuvall : check your sexuality - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Well perhaps if a US based network had part funded it you'd be seeing it sooner instead of ***** reality shows and right-wing government propaganda shows.
- fredrated, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I don't catch the doctor often, but each time I have seen it, it was a story in a single episode. Have there been any multi-episode stories like the original doctor?
- graemee, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@zybch
just search with "Doctor"
Seems to work where "Doctor Who" or "Dr. Who" or even "Who" fails - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2yeah, that's where I catch it as well, also goign thru the older Doctor Who shows as well as torchwood
- TheSaladMan, on 10/12/2007, -5/+6In the uk it is.... this is for the USA
- whovian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@supermanred
There are h264/x264 seeds out there, if that's what you mean. - ArticleWiki, on 01/04/2009, -0/+1And mine!!!!!!!!!!!
- Dumbledorito, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Found it: "Meglos" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meglos
- mhanley, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Perhaps "City of Death"?
- Dumbledorito, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Only if they own it. But to their credit, they did get rid of "Tremors."
- lengau, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@Technopops - Where are you getting your Torrents from? Episodes 1-4 are all that have been released in the UK! (5 this Saturday)
- Guspaz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's disappointing that, despite the fact that the CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, not related the BBC other than working together on occasion) pays for part of the budget of the show and is a co-producer, they still get the episodes months behind the UK. They won't even start airing series 3 until June.
What's the point of paying for part of the show and being a co-producer if you still get it months behind? Internet for me.
That said, the CBC still will be getting it a month before Sci-Fi. CBC is a crown corporation (owned by the government), so the affiliates all have OTA broadcasts. If you're in the northern US, you should be able to pick up the CBC with a decent antenna if you're near a major Canadian city, and watch it legally a month before SciFi airs it in the US.
I'm not sure if CBC has digital OTA (over-the-air) broadcasts. Toronto might. Digital OTA broadcasts are in their infancy in Canada compared to the US; with so many subscribers to digital satellite and cable services, I guess there isn't much demand. - iamdw, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1nice little service. Unfortunately the quality is a bit below watchable. Good for re-caps and missed/forgotten moments. Quite snappy too on my slow DSL...
- GSVNoFixedAbode, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2This season (and the 2nd half of the previous), the references have been to a 'Mr Saxon'. As for David Tennant, he's good but hasn't quite got the gravitas of his predecessor. I still think Christopher Eccleston has been the best Doctor since Tom Baker. At least we got to see him in Heroes :-)
- SciFiFan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Doctor Who is a great show. I can't wait to see this season. However, I am going to miss Rose Tyler. Does anyone have any idea why Rose left the show?
- ThreeDee912, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Sadly, they got rid of Battlestar Galactica and Stargate, and put this in. It's not a bad show, but I'd wish they didn't abruptly kill the other 2 shows like that.
