- DarthShaun, on 03/16/2009, -4/+1265The new name seems retarded.
- feezus, on 03/16/2009, -7/+640I don't watch the channel that often, but whoever decided this was a good idea can eat all the dicks.
- AndrewDB, on 03/16/2009, -1/+327In other words, NBC is going to start putting all their ***** shows reruns on Syfy.
- drlha, on 03/16/2009, -1/+259Is Sci-Fi so unpopular now that it doesn't even deserve its own channel? Is this the new model for channels: become popular doing a specific thing, and then once you have your audience, become like everyone else? Sad.
- omnithought, on 03/16/2009, -0/+169Oh, you mean G42? Great.
- DiggItInIA, on 03/16/2009, -0/+163This has got to be to dumbest thing I have ever heard. It's all about money and everything else in the announcement is *****. "Syfy—unlike the generic entertainment category "sci-fi"—firmly establishes a uniquely ownable trademark". These people know nothing about sci-fi...or their own asses apparently.
- volando, on 03/17/2009, -0/+146“When we tested this new name, the thing that we got back from our 18-to-34 techno-savvy crowd, which is quite a lot of our audience, is actually this is how you’d text it”
ehhhh no. I'd type "scifi" as it's there in the dictionary. Syfy(lis) is the most retarded thing that channel has done since introducing reality shows, psychic ***** and wrestling! Goodbye, science fiction :( - BooLag, on 04/23/2009, -10/+155MORANS!
- dingedarmor, on 03/16/2009, -2/+136I'm guessing evil extraterrestrials have preformed a whookelar brain suck on the people who run the channel.....that or they are idiots.
R.I.P. Science Fiction on SyFy!
I am guessing we won't even see reruns of good or even bad science fiction and fantasy t.v. shows.
Sigh, pew..... - RealmDown, on 03/17/2009, -0/+118I've said for years that they should call themselves "The Horror Channel with Wrestling"
Stargate + BSG does not give you the right to continue to use "SciFi" with accuracy. - mogebier, on 03/16/2009, -0/+101So does this mean that the "monster of the week" movies will be in other genre's other than Sci-Fi?
"I Married a KILLER TROUT!!"
Well, they might as well kill off a good name. They kill off all their good and popular shows. - TheInformer, on 03/17/2009, -0/+99Today, the Scifi channel is to science fiction as MTV is to music videos.
- omenmedia, on 03/16/2009, -1/+98Um, why? Syfy is retarded and frankly I think insulting to their audience who, lets face it, by the very virtue of watching science fiction are most likely going to be more intelligent than the average douche. I look at Syfy and pronounce it "Siffy". Almost sounds like Syphilis. Lame lame lame.
- timothycrash01, on 03/16/2009, -0/+86"the new brand broadens perceptions and embraces a wider range of current and future imagination-based entertainment"
Ah, this is definitely so they can start airing CSI and Law & Order re-runs and cash in on the madness like every other network. Sad, sad. - consoneo, on 03/17/2009, -1/+85I agree 100%, it made me immediately say "siffy" in my head.
It seems as if it's appealing to a phonetics-based "texting" generation, which should not be catered to in any way shape or form, lol.
Texting is extremely useful to communicate quickly, but an awful invention where socialization is concerned.
Back on the topic, though, the marketing department is stretching if they think this name change will get them a larger audience... There needs to be a better use of informational awareness, not a name change. Market Penetration, not rebranding! - Akairenn, on 03/17/2009, -2/+83About time.
SciFi has, other than BSG and Stargate reruns, been crap for a long time now. Sorry - Pirates of the Carribean is NOT sci-fi. LAWL GHOST HUNTERZzzzzzzzzz111111111111111111 is crap, not sci-fi. The Odyssey is not sci-fi. Bad Dungeons and Dragons flicks are not sci-fi. Now if in addition to this, we can get History to rename itself to 'Some crap about monsters with a lot of Christian end of times BS thrown in', we'll be set.
Or, you know, network execs could stop snorting coke, play sci-fi on SciFi; historical programs on The History Channel. That would be awesome, but I'm not holding my breath. - withoutamartyr, on 03/17/2009, -0/+77ALL THE DICKS YOU SAY?
- inactive, on 03/16/2009, -1/+76I guess I look at this way....
It's like a marriage that's just gone downhill. Communication is one-sided and you wake one day and realize you just don't know her anymore. So you file for divorce and she changes her name. You move on with your life while she just WHORES herself out to any low-budget incoherent script she can wrap her legs around.
What did I ever see in her ??? I feel dirty and used hahahaha Hope I haven't caught SYFY !!!! - fixyourthinking, on 03/17/2009, -1/+76Umm ... let's just rename FOOD network to FüD while we're at it.
- laurawallace799, on 03/16/2009, -4/+76How long do you think it'll be before the n00b SciFi Channel president decides to do away with their new 'SyFy' brand due to the general outcry against it? SciFi is getting ripped a new one on Twitter today. http://search.twitter.com/search?q=SyFy
- hiropendragon, on 03/16/2009, -0/+60This is absolutely ridiculous!
Way to abandon the core demographic and snub all of the creative talents behind the books, tv shows, and movies of the Science Fiction drama! - ryan83189, on 03/17/2009, -0/+57If they bring back MST 3000 and get rid of the garbage that isn't really "Sci Fi" they could call it whatever they want. It doesn't look like that is going to happen now that they are changing their name, just like Tech TV/g4. Lose name, lose the mission statement, and it all goes downhill from there.
- mfc5200, on 03/17/2009, -0/+56These guys are an absolutely retarded bunch
example a) You would think a SCI-FI channel would cater to a technically fluent group. However, they don't stream their shows online for the most part. You think they would have been the first ones to jump on this back in the day, or AT least have all their shows available for online streaming by now. But no, South Park and the Daily show beat them to it, and you still can't watch many shows online.
There is nothing sadder than going to a torrent site and seeing a "stargate atlantis episode 25 downloaded 321,209 times" and then having Sci-Fi complain about their ratings. Connect the puzzle pieces already. So ironic for a TV station based on science fiction. - inactive, on 03/16/2009, -0/+55Well the President and CEO of the network David Howe believes “The name Sci Fi has been associated with geeks and dysfunctional, antisocial boys in their basements with video games and stuff like that, as opposed to the general public and the female audience in particular.”
So um yeah I believe insulting is putting it mildly. This guy is unreal - MarrowMan, on 03/17/2009, -4/+58that's SewGey
- Samueul, on 03/17/2009, -0/+54Hear hear! Absolutely... and since stargate and atlantis are cancelled and BSG is done in a few weeks... What we have is c-list b monster movies and wrestling.... what a ***** shame..
- rexprime, on 03/17/2009, -0/+53Anything to show wrestling. After bsg is gone no one will watch "SYFY" anyway.
- Jektal, on 03/17/2009, -1/+52And as G4 is to technology.
- norman619, on 03/17/2009, -0/+49Yeah the SciFi channel stopped being scifi a long time ago. I don't watch it much anymore and I still don't get why they have wrestling. It does not fit the rest of their programming. Why don't they add a cooking show as well? They waste so much money producing these bad horror/fantasy films as well. I wish they'd put the same kind of effort into obtaining quality scifi shows and films.
I wonder what their ratings have dropped to since the ending of SG1, Atlantis, and soon BSG. They gotta be taking. - Gggarth, on 03/17/2009, -0/+48I think it'd be a bad thing to eat all of them :)
- artofwar420, on 03/17/2009, -3/+45You say that like it's a bad thing to eat dicks.
- BitSlicer, on 03/17/2009, -7/+49WOW - let's let marketing dumb-down something else! (These guys really need to get a life.)
I wonder if the website name will change also. What about my TV book, will they change also, hey Gertrude come quick, a new TV channel!
We can rename all the channels:
E! = !
HBO = BO
Comedy Central = *****
Food Network = EAT! - graemee, on 03/17/2009, -0/+39Is it April Fools already?
- inactive, on 03/17/2009, -0/+38Please sir, can I have some more?
- cynikkle, on 03/17/2009, -1/+39What a stupid idea. I'm having a hard time believing this is true, still. Seriously?
- inactive, on 03/17/2009, -0/+38syfylus?
- beretta92fs, on 03/16/2009, -2/+39Which dumbass in the marketing dept. thought this up. Well no more Stargate and BSG so I won't be watching any more.
- topcat5, on 03/17/2009, -0/+37This Channel basically went down the toilet years ago when it was purchased by NBC Universal. Doesn't really matter what you call it, it still deserves to be flushed.
- wesclark49, on 03/16/2009, -0/+34Bring back "classic" SCI FI!
- AmyVernon, on 03/16/2009, -0/+34It's all about the benjamins - they can't trademark SciFi; but they can trademark SyFy.
- chthonical, on 03/17/2009, -0/+34I think they already did, and they came down with a case of SyFylis.
- greevar, on 03/17/2009, -0/+33I'm guessing that the guy that ruined TechTV with G4 programming, is behind the SyFy®.
- gglynn07, on 03/17/2009, -0/+31Nah, they already do that on USA.
- JenX1985, on 03/17/2009, -0/+30This is lame.
- xinpheld, on 03/17/2009, -0/+30totally. And when's the last time you've ever actually learned anything on The Learning Channel? At least the Food Network still has food on it. As does my jacket.
- gotamd, on 03/17/2009, -2/+31G4-TechTV, anyone?
- rebrad, on 03/17/2009, -0/+28After Friday, who cares. I watched the channel once a week for BSG. I used to watch the channel quite a bit but I can't tolerate wrestling, ghost morons or snakes and crocs. Hopefully some true SF fan will start a real science fiction channel. There is plenty of good content out there. All you have to do is look at the torrent sites like EZTV and you'll find more than enough shows for a full schedule of quality SF. I'm sure producers and actors would appreciate it and they'd be paid for their work since they make nothing off bittorrent. I'd even pay extra for the picture quality (even though I thought I did that already) since my old eyes can't see those ittybitty screens you get from online sites.
- mythicflux, on 03/16/2009, -0/+27Which they did by buying out another group already using the name for 10 years. (Google: SyFyPortal.com)
- serif69, on 03/17/2009, -0/+26Imagine the indigestion.
- inactive, on 03/17/2009, -1/+27This is as retarded as blackwater renaming it self Xe
