- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+36I really, really hope he makes a full recovery. Top Gear wouldn't be the same without his amazingly white teeth.
- inkyblue2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+36dear universe,
for the record, when i go, i would like to do so while driving a 300 mph rocket car. that would be awesome.
thanks - tizz66, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18When visiting the hospital, Jeremy Clarkson made a joke about Hammond being a bad driver, and Hammon smiled back.
That made me very happy indeed :') - iFelix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16Update
Top Gear's Richard Hammond is out of intensive care and is making "satisfactory progress", doctors say.

Top Gear presenter Richard Hammond has suffered a "significant brain injury" after crashing a jet-powered car at speeds of up to 300mph during filming.
Doctors at Leeds General Infirmary said they were "reasonably optimistic" the 36-year-old would make a good recovery. - shifty2, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Poor Hampster... I'm praying for a full speedy recovery.
I can't wait to see the new season of Top Gear, supposed to
start in the beginning of October.
Get well soon Hampster!! - drlha, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Unfortunately the words "followed safety rules" are trumped by "jet powered car". I'm sure the guy knew there was a risk in doing what he did, and accepted that. Lets not have a lengthy inquest or anything silly like that. There's a reason why we don't all drive 300mph jet powered cars after all, besides the fuel costs.
- EdLesMann, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6"Top Gear wouldn't be the same without his amazingly white teeth."
I agree.
What frightens me is that almost always when a show loses a presenter, the show either a) goes down the crapper or b) gets canceled.
Now James and Clarkson are great presenters and while I am sure they could pull off the show on their own, they will probably get stuck with some new guy who will consistenly be compaired to Hammond..thats where the show may take a nose dive...I REALLY DONT WANT THAT TO HAPPEN! I LOVE THAT SHOW! It has been one of my goals to be on the Top Gear set and Damn It! I want the three of them to be there when I finally go!
Come On Hammond! Pull through and come back to Top Gear Quickly!! - RichPowers, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I'm not much of a car person, but I still love Top Gear - it's just one of those amazingly entertaining shows to watch. Godspeed, Hampster.
- richbradshaw, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Yeah, does sound quite slow doesn't it... Maybe because the UK is too small to get up any proper speed?!
- jav1231, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Agreed. These things happen. You can only be so safe and there are a multitude of things that can go wrong. Here in Atlanta just a few years back a jet dragster was sent sideways shortly after launch, caught fire and burned the driver severely. He later died. These guys know the risk and take it. It doesn't make them stupid or careless, they just live on the edge; a calculated edge. It beats dying in a pull of your own vomit because you drank yourself to death in the myre of self-pity.
- repairman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Good to hear he is stable now. He scared the crap out of me when he gave his van the old "scandinavian flick" and rolled it last season. This, of course, is a much more serious crash though.
- HP844182, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4But I laughed my ass off at that one.
- semyaza, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5probably because there isnt enough land before you crash into the sea :-P
- skinnyweb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3unfortunately we don't have anywhere big and flat enough. That's why the likes of Bluebird, Thrust and Thrust SSC had to be hauled over to the US the break the world records.
- GiggleStick, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Godspeed? I think trying to do that was the problem here.
- jamble, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3yeah, at 7-10 gallons to the mile the cost of running one in the uk would be significant!
- smelly1966, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Richard Hammond is intact, awake and in full control of his faculties.
His co-host, James May, has been to the hospital to visit him and said that the Hamster is A OK.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/5371556.stm - Afroman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Hampster get well soon!
We need you to burn down more campers...
I had a freaking heart attack watching that episode this past season. he threw the sofa cushion on fire out the camper windo into another camper..
HAHA
be well, Top Gear need you. - wupike, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3bahahaha best quote from last season "I'll try the old Scandinavian Flick!"
Get well soon Hammond! - HP844182, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2That brought a smile to my face.
- planetsweet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2For anyone interested in showing support for Richard Hammond, they may like to consider making a donation to the Yorkshire Air Ambulance that took him so speedily to hospital. In any case, the site is worth a visit to see the amount that has been raised. The Hamster will be pleased to see what has been achieved. Go here: http://www.justgiving.com/phrichardhammond
- tizz66, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2James May has said he has been talking to Hammond today, and that deep down inside, he knows the real Hammond hasn't been damaged.
I'm really glad the signs are looking positive, so often this things get worse instead of better. - ColinY, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2There isn't enough free road before you hit a traffic jam, actually. :-P
- 3leggedHorse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1hamster rules get well soon.
- semyaza, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2UK Land speed record was already broken in a peugot
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2004/01/21/speed_camera_clocks_motorist/
and speed cameras are dead accurate :-D - mytea, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I agree, Top Gear is one of the best show's on TV.. and I'm not really that fussed about cars..
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Glamorizing speed? WTF?
They might as well go after every high-performance car company, the Air Force, hydroplane racers, etc.
Why can't people take responsibility for not raising their kids properly (if they street race or do something else that is bad like a school shooting or other violent act) instead of blaming games, tv and movies? - mykea, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I hope the "Hamster" makes a full recovery, I can't imagine Top Gear without his pearly whites and while I think that Jeremy and James are competent presenters, the show is really an ensemble because they all balance each other out, plus who's going to look after Top Gear Dog. I wish the public here in the US was ready for a show like Top Gear produced here, but they are too many reasons to mention why that wouldn't happen. All my best to Richard and his family.
- crash999, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Last year, lobby group Transport 2000 called for the show to be taken off the air accusing it of "glamorising speed and failing to make the connection with danger on the roads"."
Retards. - moisie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Yup, anything faster would have to be the British Land-Sea Speed Record or something. All the big records were made at large US deserts or dried up lakes etc. Britain doesn't have many of them. Although with the hosepipe bans...
- TonyCubed, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I'm pleased he is getting better. we want our Hamster back!
- cquinnd, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I think it has something to do with the traffic cameras.
And if Hammond ever set a land speed record, the STIG would be right there to break it again. - endlessrayne, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0A slightly adjusted version has been played on the Discovery Channel here in the states.. although it was only a few episodes. Pretty short lived. Oh well, I'll just keep getting it through other means.
- julie87, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0From the last I heard, Richard has moved out of HDU to a general ward, HOORAY, Richard is getting better, I hope he will get back on his feet soon. Plus, on the news last night, I heard the Yorkshire air ambulance received about £70,000, but I hope it doesn't stop there, the air ambulance needs all the donations it can get to keep going
- ka12en, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I hope he recovers soon. The show wouldn't be the same without the "Hamster"
- Argentice, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Not "trying to break a record"?
Are the BBC being deliberately mis-leading? He WAS trying to go faster than the land speed record. But they had a deal with the makers of the car that it had to be unofficial as they wanted to hold on to the actual record themselves. - MajorPayne, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0I'm glad to hear the Hampster's making progress...
Side note: How is it that the land speed record in Britain is only 300.3mph?? Is that a misprint? - spyrochaete, on 10/12/2007, -13/+6Dear lord, bless this rocket car and all who dwell within the rocket car...
- cvecve, on 10/12/2007, -16/+5What's a "Hampster"? Is it similar to a hamster?
