- Chubs879, on 11/16/2009, -1/+16Here is a rewrite of that review, to save everyone some time:
It's not the original, so I hate it. - mark076h, on 11/14/2009, -2/+12Where is the BUBBLE?
- AiR1890, on 11/16/2009, -0/+9I watched the new show, and you do see the bubble.
- Super6, on 11/16/2009, -0/+9The original was so good and this looks so different that I feel I'll be disappointed. The village was supposed to be a facade of happiness, not a dark place.
- nmerouze, on 11/14/2009, -1/+8The trailer looks pretty good. If it's as good as the other series from AMC it will be epic!
- mesasone, on 11/15/2009, -0/+6Yah ok
- CobaltScribe, on 11/16/2009, -0/+5If you remake a classic, you have a responsibility to both that classic and it's fans. This is something the producers of the latest Star Trek movie realized, but the producers of the Prisoner remake sadly ignored.
- INTERNETMASTER, on 11/16/2009, -0/+5this will be good to see if only for a proper ending
- Spacejack, on 11/16/2009, -0/+4I would say "may you live long enough to see everything you love smeared with *****," but I guess all the things you grow up loving are going to be pre-smeared, so I guess it doesn't make much difference.
- explodingzebras, on 11/16/2009, -0/+4Mcgoohan is probably spinning in his grave, if i believed, but No 6 is Jim Caviesal? Caveasel? Cavisial. whatever. Stop raping the past!
- DrCyclops, on 11/16/2009, -0/+4I'm more troubled by this idea that characters should be subservient to a convoluted plot.
- pagno, on 11/16/2009, -0/+4We want information. Information!
- Techrocket9, on 11/16/2009, -0/+3500 Bonus points to whoever finds out how to watch it legally online for free.
- merlin99, on 11/16/2009, -0/+3Absolutely loved the Prisoner the first time round. Cant help but expect that the fate that The Wickerman incurred will befall the Prisoner. a terrible remake is all but inevitable.
good casting of Sir Ian though. - moisture, on 11/14/2009, -2/+5nor have i seen it yet but judging from all the negative reviews.... it seems to confirm the old saying that:
if it worked the first time, don't remake it. - AiR1890, on 11/16/2009, -1/+4I just finished watching, the editing was very weird, kinda hard to keep up with at times, but I still liked it a lot, I cannot wait for the new episode on monday. Great show, I have to watch the original now, but first I will finish watching the new series, then I will watch the original to see which one I like better. I am watching First Blood now, never seen this movie, looking good so far, cops are dicks, especially in this movie.
- pagno, on 11/16/2009, -0/+3Our culture has past its peak. We are now in the downward spiral.
- TheRealDj, on 11/16/2009, -1/+4Sweet Zombie Jesus, Caviezel is boring. Where McGoohan was always passionate and driven as number 6 with an unstoppable will to get the truth, Caviezel just kinda seems like he's plodding along.
- Kronos6948, on 11/16/2009, -1/+3Yeah, I didn't see Rover.
- PeppermintPig, on 11/16/2009, -1/+3Sometimes characters are subservient to a plot, such as in a fable. That doesn't innately result in bad stories. Bad plot is bad plot. Confusing ethical messages can result in bad stories, whether they are driven by idealistic characters or more realistic flawed characters.
- skipvt, on 11/14/2009, -0/+2Although I've yet to hear a good review of it, I will still watch.
- netant, on 11/16/2009, -0/+2The problem isn't the casting. The problem is that the original was based on surreal, avante-guarde imagery with all the plots buried in metaphysical themes. This remake is too cowardly to challenge viewers mentally, and it unnecessarily boxes itself into corners, and it has no flair like the original.
The original Prisoner was a commentary on the Cold War and authoritarian British society. Everyone lives in The Village, but its a lie, a Potemkin village. Western society isn't "free". You're always watched. You don't know who you can trust, hence the heightened paranoia and control of a police state. Society doesn't appreciate individuals, they treat them all as numbers. Information is power. The Number 2s represent elected officials. They don't operate on the voter's agenda, they aren't effective, and they are interchangeable with no change to the way things are run. (Geez, with Obama in office, you'd think people would at least see THAT allegory.)
In this go around, all the symbolism has been stripped out. We're probably not going to see Ian McKellan switched out with another #2. The writers do "smartly" allude to modern capitalism as the new dehumanizing bugaboo, but then they box themselves into a corner by implying its a corporation that put #2 in the Village. Its a smart thing to make people not remember their real names, which can be burned out of you with modern medical techniques. (I would have preferred Skinner conditioning.) But in the original, villagers always KNEW there was civilization outside of the Villiage. Today, you can't really make them ALL forget ALL of it and believe nothing exists outside of the Villiage. So why did the writers box themselves in so unnecessarily? - Spacejack, on 11/16/2009, -0/+2"except for borrowing some names as a marketing gimmick."
Like the name of the show, which is the whole reason there IS a new one in the first place. It's not a "new show that has nothing to do with..." The whole thing is a marketing gimmick. Thusly, I do accept it for what it is... a marketing gimmick. - glaz, on 11/16/2009, -0/+2Nah, this remake has been in the pipeline since way before McGoohan passed. He was pretty much done with show business by that point and didn't really care either way.
- AiR1890, on 11/17/2009, -0/+1I will, after I watch the new series.
- Dylson, on 11/16/2009, -1/+2O_o
- mark076h, on 11/16/2009, -0/+1sweet
- PeppermintPig, on 11/16/2009, -1/+2Not enough has unfolded for me to judge if the story will work out, but I haven't seen any glaring problems with the acting either.
The sets, vehicles, and attention to color in filming is fantastic.
Enjoyed this far more than the V remake, and I had higher expectations for The Prisoner remake. - the8thbit, on 11/16/2009, -2/+3I'm watching this show right now, I refresh Digg, and bam, I see this.
- glaz, on 11/16/2009, -1/+2"where television shows like Battlestar Galactica, Lost and others get lost in character studies that comfort viewers rather than fractal narratives that challenge them."
Poorly written article. As great as it is, I don't remember The Prisoner ever challenging any of my beliefs. A critique can generally be considered to be clutching at straws when the author has to insist that the narrative isn't subversive enough. A simple counter argument would be that it wasn't supposed to be subversive in the first place, nor did they suggest it would be. - Spacejack, on 11/16/2009, -0/+1The only reason they can do this now is that Patrick McGoohan isn't alive to stop them. And he would. If he were alive.
Kind of puts a pall on it, no? - Bloodwine, on 11/16/2009, -5/+6Series today seem to go for broke in the drama department. It worked for a handful of series, such as BSG, but BSG still had space battles and toaster shootouts.
While I appreciate characters aren't as two-dimensional as those often found in '80s shows, I think TV execs need to understand that we still crave special effects, explosions, and action. Also, dial down the drama just a tad because it's gotten to be about as absurd as those two-dimensional characters of the '80s, just in a different way. - exhale100, on 11/16/2009, -0/+1I thought the first ep was alright. I might watch the second tomorrow night. Doesn't seem like it'll rank up there with some of the other AMC hits though.
- netant, on 11/16/2009, -0/+1Yeah, I was really surprised they left that iconic line out.
- the8thbit, on 11/16/2009, -0/+1Well, it was mostly surprising as I had no idea what the show was, and just discovered it as I flipped through channels.
- PopcornDave, on 11/16/2009, -0/+1Then you really owe it to yourself to watch the original series to see where it came from.
- netant, on 11/16/2009, -0/+1If we can put man on the moon...
- PopcornDave, on 11/16/2009, -0/+1But therein lies the problem. For years I've thought, at least until I heard that AMC had done it, that The Prisoner would be a fantastic show to remake but I could never figure out who to cast in McGoohan's shoes. Number 2 is a bit easier if you're going to swap them out every week since you've got an entire stable of actors to choose from.
- glaz, on 11/16/2009, -1/+1For some reason I can picture you sitting back and laughing at all of the negative feedback you got. I in turn, laugh at you for this.
- whipnet, on 11/16/2009, -1/+1Twice

- AiR1890, on 11/16/2009, -2/+1I have never seen the original, but I do remember The Simpsons making fun of the Village, I did not know what they were making fun of at the time, now I do. I am watching the show on AMC now, and I really like it. I think this will be a great show.
- Number127, on 11/16/2009, -1/+0I thought the first two episodes were pretty good; I just hope they can pull off a satisfying resolution.
I wish fans of the original could learn to look at this as a completely new miniseries that has nothing to do with their favorite show, except for borrowing some names as a marketing gimmick. Accept it for what it is. - Tobey, on 11/16/2009, -4/+2Yeah...that's something that would only be amusing to you.
- whipnet, on 11/16/2009, -4/+1It beats the hell out of V.
