- colincornaby, on 11/05/2009, -8/+82I liked V but I thought the universal health care comment was kind of out of place.
I mean, really, aliens come and they offer to give everyone universal health care, and you're shocked because it's universal health care? I'd be more worried about what the aliens were going to stick in me, not that they had just used the words "universal health care". It just seemed heavy handed. - IUAndar, on 11/05/2009, -0/+72So they come to Earth offering us peace and healthcare, whats the worst that could happen....
Oh God! "To Serve Man," It's a cookbook! It's a cookbook! - govsucks, on 11/04/2009, -27/+78Boy, someone is reading into this aren't they? I watched it and didn't even think about Obama and I read that political article about it on the net.
Besides, just because you share similar ideologies with some of humanities most feared imaginary aliens like the Borg and V lizards, don't shy away from it, be the borg wanna collectivist totalitarians you are and EMBRACE your 3.78 hours of sleep in a public recharge unit of your choice every 20 time cycles.
Know that SOMEDAY, your decedents will force their ideology of social collectivism on the people of another world and rejoice. - Hetman, on 11/04/2009, -14/+64I did not know much about the originial V. I actually thought it was a remake of alien nation which would have been awesome. Anyways if you read the wiki article about the originial they seem for all sakes and purposes to be basically the same. This article is complete BS and I am not a fan of tea baggers in any sense of the phrase.
- quantum459, on 11/05/2009, -7/+53Because when Bush was in office there were totally no political metaphors made about his administration in every other show...
that said... for me, there was no point in this show where I thought to myself, "hey, that sounds like something obama-ish".
Get over yourself mr senior editor at a news website no one cares about. - Jaiotu, on 11/05/2009, -2/+43Oh Nos! Lizards eating human beings are DEATH PANELS!
- Californication, on 11/05/2009, -10/+49What a ***** article. Buried for delusional paranoia.
- inactive, on 11/05/2009, -9/+45This is an American prime-time show. Expect it to be highly politically charged.
Buried for trying to make something out of nothing. - hpi5555, on 11/05/2009, -3/+33Meh, any type of alien overlord type story will draw similarity to whoever is in power at the time. I can guarantee that if the pilot came out last year, there would be similarities to Bush, and this source would be praising V for it's insightful political commentary. Yawn.
- Yage2006, on 11/05/2009, -4/+29Actually the universal health care line just made my lol.
I don't live in the US so seeing people's reaction to the gov trying to set up a plan is very entertaining.
The writer of this drivel really read way too far into it. Surprising how little it takes for the entire show to become a right wing show for 1 remark.
I am pretty good at noting subtext in movies or series and this was nothing more then humor.
Anyway I liked the show and I am very LEFT minded. Author of this ***** post needs to take a vacation.
/Buried - Rhydeble, on 11/05/2009, -2/+22they're not talking about universal health care, they're talking about UNIVERSEal health care, y'know, in the entire universe..
/pun mode - NightEmber79, on 11/05/2009, -1/+20Not everything is about Obama
Not everything was about Bush
However...
Every two bit blogger who uses Obama/Tea Partys to get cheap hits a retard... - Isenborg, on 11/05/2009, -9/+28Hello, It's called writing about relevant issues to engage an audience.
- acknotSW, on 11/05/2009, -0/+19Wait, there's still more dust.
- Suricou, on 11/05/2009, -0/+16I recall in the origional V, they offered a cure for cancer among other technologies.
- jordanv1, on 11/05/2009, -3/+16To the idiot who wrote this article, from a college-aged, idealistic liberal hipster:
It's a TV show, and it's a pretty enjoyable one. Get over yourself. - ParadiscaCorbas, on 11/04/2009, -12/+23The original was just on the Sci-Fi Channel and had a lot of issues like teen pregnancy and the holocaust (which was a big deal for tv then).
This is -- nothing like that. It does come across as anti-Obama tv. - Nerfdude, on 11/05/2009, -0/+11you know, it sounds like something ABC would do. but i saw the episode and really wasn't feeling what this guy's saying. they just sort of crowbarred the phrase "universal healthcare" in.
- Myonosken, on 11/05/2009, -3/+14Guess what, being politically paranoid and with a narrow worldview works both ways Mr Editor.
- sandman979, on 11/05/2009, -2/+12I have no problem with the political implications of the pilot and you know why? Because for much I like Obama, at least at this moment, it is clearly visible that many people are indeed invested into the "miracle man" thing. That's not something new if you know a bit of history. It happens every time a country or place gets into a bad moment. People get lost in the political / social / media confusion and by instinct they tend to look for a paternal figure to protect them. That's how Bush won his 2nd term after 911. That's also how Hitler got elected (no Bush correlation intended).
It is good to show people the dangers of blind faith. I think the show might turn out to be a nice wake up call. - pixiedow, on 11/05/2009, -6/+16I hadn't really considered watching the remake of "V" until reading this article. i'm one of those fringe Tea Party-ers and I need a prime time show that embodies my extreme point of view.
- philomatic, on 11/05/2009, -1/+11They said "universal health care" in the episode... EVERYONE PANIC
- doctordbx, on 11/05/2009, -1/+9Clearly the Visitors didn't give a ***** for how the earth doctors were going to pay for their Porsches.
- lolwatermelon, on 11/05/2009, -3/+10Oh come on, they went out of their way to brand the 'healing centers' as universal healthcare.
- Hetman, on 11/04/2009, -5/+12I just read the wiki page and they seemed similiar. I was like 2 when the first one came out.
- TheNik, on 11/05/2009, -1/+8CAPS LOCK IS CRUISE CONTROL FOR COOL, AIN'T IT?
- KahRahTay, on 11/05/2009, -0/+7look man, the BILLY MAYS button is not a toy.
- digitalArtform, on 11/05/2009, -10/+17The politics of this show support my worldview, so I'm going to pretend they aren't there and that it's paranoid to suggest they are.
- Juicediggs, on 11/05/2009, -1/+8What a stupid stupid article by a stupid individual. V could be read into many different ways or simply taken at face value. I'm a moderate republican and actually saw the Aliens as more of a commentary on our occupation of Iraq, but I'll let this writer keep his panties in a wad because throwing a bunch of buzz words like Glenn Beck & Tea Party will get him a lot of hits by digg's zombie nation.
- MaTT2011, on 11/05/2009, -4/+11I gotta agree; I'm not sure about the political flavorings that may or may not exist within that particular line but given the context it was really......cheesy. Just out of place and quite awkward.
I think it just might have been intended to be a familiar term, something to get the audience to connect with the world being illustrated, instead of "OMG democrats are aliens and they want to kill your grandma and babies and YOU!" Could they really be that transparent and adolescent? I'd like to think not, but then again..... the tea party DOES exist despite its being soaked in pure self destructive stupidity.
Instead it did the opposite of providing familiarity, it really turned me off to liking the show. That and the horribly obvious plot (i never saw the original btw) and a feeling of "been there, done that" (again, this is entirely independent of the original which i have no experience with) - Shadowrydr, on 11/05/2009, -1/+8Damn that right wing conspiracy...they are everywhere. :/
- Mookeh, on 11/05/2009, -3/+9It seemed heavy handed to us because it's been a media issue lately. "Universal health care" is now a pop-phrase, much more than it was months ago when V started shooting (which is not to say it wasn't important back then).
- whatthefu, on 11/05/2009, -5/+11You are confusing that with genuinely good writing that engages an audience.
- apropose, on 11/05/2009, -2/+7The most telling part of this story is not about Universal Health Care it's when when Chait writes "I’m really not sure how this made it onto network television."
Apparently anything that can be construed as critical of Obama shouldn't be asked just like you shouldn't “Ask no questions that portray us in a negative light.” of the Aliens - Maddoktor2, on 11/05/2009, -0/+5I'm a progressive, and think this is beyond ridiculous.
Seriously, people - get a grip already.
It was one line in the show, guys. One line.
You folks are reading way too much into it.
Wait and see how it develops before you start bandying partisan accusations about, ok? - catfish182, on 11/05/2009, -2/+7this article sucks. I did not watch it yet (tivoed) and this dbag wants to think its anti-obama. Pull away from the poltics for a bit. this is a remake of a cheesy 80's miniseries and series.
Lighten up Francis - sholt, on 11/05/2009, -0/+5Man, I just flew in from Sirius 4 and *boy* are my arms tired!
- Hetman, on 11/05/2009, -0/+5Yea I was 1 when V came out. I was 10 when Alien Nation came out. That is why I remember alien nation and not V.
- Ryuuken117, on 11/05/2009, -5/+10OMG! How could ABC possibly allow a show with a conservative viewpoint on the air? What gives half of the country the right to broadcast their views? Shocking. Truly shocking. I am shocked.
- Malice2009, on 11/05/2009, -4/+9I watched it for 10 minutes and even I saw similarities to the current US government.
Then I obviously turned it off cause the acting performances were actually making my eyes bleed. - Opiate, on 11/05/2009, -2/+6How typical to associate your worst fears (truth) with your worst enemies (neocons). Had you only been paying attention to Digg you'd think the "tea bagger" movement is only extremists. Is that what they called the founding fathers? Yeah probably.. and Europe wants it's chattel back.
- Paranor01, on 11/05/2009, -0/+4David Icke would be proud of this show.
- Murrabbit, on 11/05/2009, -4/+8The US government isn't even talking about providing anyone with health care - just health INSURANCE. Hospitals will still be privately owned, and doctors still employed either by themselves or other private medical companies.
Your paranoia is getting in the way of your education, sir. - Jaiotu, on 11/05/2009, -1/+5No, the aliens just EAT PEOPLE!!! They E_A_T__P_E_O_P_L_E_! Don't you get it??? OBAMA wants to eat our children for breakfast!!!
- xGORDOx, on 11/05/2009, -2/+6I love it!
When V first aired in 1983, the media called it a metaphor for the Reagan administration and hailed how important it was for the social comentary to be seen on TV using sci-fi as a thin veil.
NOW?
Now it's bad cuz it's a commentary on Obama.
LMAO. The elite progressives hammer on Bush for eight years in virtually every form of media we consume, and it's ok, cuz you know, its Bush and he's a (R).
But god forbid someone injects some social commentary in regards to the man-god Obama, oh no, can't do that! - DDRSkata, on 11/05/2009, -1/+5@HiddenIP:
1. If you think the average American "liberal" is a Marxist, you have clearly never read or studied Marx and have literally no idea what you're talking about.
2. How do you not see the benefit of sharing? Did you fail kindergarten? Did you never get past the "mine" stage when you were two? I'm not talking about complete redistribution of wealth like communism; I'm saying helping out those who can't help themselves.
3. That's not white guilt. That's history. - KahRahTay, on 11/05/2009, -0/+4sounds like you just described Battlestar Galactica
- Hetman, on 11/05/2009, -1/+4When you give health care to everyone it is called universal health care. I am all for universal health care but it is not like a term that is only used in America.
- Coffeedemon, on 11/05/2009, -1/+4Exactly... today tons of things rely on storylines about politics and in-fighting. Back in the days of the cold war everything was a nuclear war allegory. The entertainment products of a day inevitably reference current events in order to be more relevant.
- trakie, on 11/05/2009, -1/+4is there some website out there where you can just copy and paste this stuff from, or do you actually think it all out?
Your example of the discovery of capitalism tells me a few things: 1) you don't know what the liberals stand for and hate them too much to even consider any of their positions and
2) you think capitalism is the forced labor of a whole family (even children) so they don't starve to death, and that somehow this is a good thing
3) the story of how the pilgrims figured it out by resorting to "capitalism" might sound nice, but it was the native americans who saved them and to think anything else did is just foolish and
4) why do i even bother replying, its hopeless. -
