- blankoboy, on 05/20/2008, -28/+12Imagine these actors appearing in "blackface" and doing the same stereotypes of black or Jewish people. Would you the general populace take it with the same sense of humour? I don't think so, there'd be an uproar from the offended community.
I don't know why Western comedians and audiences feel it is ok to be racist against Asians and Middle Eastern folks when they'd have a fit if it was done to them. I suppose this is just the typical North American selfish attitude at play?- Aikinai, on 05/20/2008, -4/+12I agree completely that if this was done against a race that is common in America there'd be an uproar, but it's not a one-way street against the Japanese. In Japan there's not really a sense of what is and is not racism like there is in America, and they do things like this all the time without thinking twice.
Here's a comedy group pretending they're Americans learning Japanese:

And here's a random guy dressing up as Obama (including blackface) and going to the town called Obama:

Japanese people have no history with blackface (and its connections to racism) and don't see painting your face any different from dressing up as the person you're imitating.- diggimator, on 05/20/2008, -0/+1The SNL skit wasn't really offensive towards Japanese that much, if at all, but I don't agree with your argument. Just like 9/11 doesn't excuse random harassments of Arabs in the US, some random guy in Japan being politically incorrect cannot justify all anti-Japanese stereotypes that could be made in the US.
The blogger's Obama impersonation was rather lame, but he wasn't doing an impersonation of a negative black stereotype, he was doing an impersonation of Obama. If he had decided to wear a Curious George outfit and say he's Obama, however, then that would have been another story altogether.

- JoeCool1986, on 05/20/2008, -3/+6I'm pretty sure much of the world makes fun of Americans and parodies American culture a LOT. I don't know where you get this idea that "we'd throw a fit."
So, in other words, you fail. - mongrel, on 05/20/2008, -2/+5It's because most Asians appreciate themselves as a race enough to not be as ***** sensitive as the others. Same for most Jewish.
Now relate some of those "sensitive" types (which will remain unspecified) to how frequently they actually reflect their negative stereotypes, and maybe you'll have your reason. - tyywebb, on 05/20/2008, -0/+6People appearing in "blackface" and doing stereotypes of black people. I think the pure absurdity of it and the over the top offensiveness would make it ***** hilarious (if done correctly). I'm also looking forward to Tropic Thunder. : D

- GawtMilk, on 05/20/2008, -0/+3I don't think it would be funny if they dressed up in blackface and made Jewish impersonations. Maybe if they wore כִּפָּה and grew out פאות. But blackface? Now that's just inaccurate racism.
- diggimator, on 05/20/2008, -0/+1Well, it may be referring to a small minority. There are the Ethiopian Jews, and also Jesus...

- sovereign3, on 05/20/2008, -2/+28I was amazed at the casts' ability to speak and pronounce Japanese. Although it's not that hard, they did a fine job of picking it up in a week!
- hmunkey, on 05/20/2008, -0/+46Pretty cool how Steve Carrell was on it too.
- KyleGoetz, on 05/20/2008, -0/+54I laughed at his cup: 世界中で一番おもろい社. First, the final character is presumably not visible, but is 長, making the cup say "World's Funniest Boss." It's really funny for Japanese speakers since the use of 社 means Michael is ranked #1 in the company, so it's funny because Michael would definitely buy a cup that refers to him as the entire company's head. Also "funny" is written in a slangy style, so it's actually probably a typo'ed おもしろい.
Other interesting Japanese: the town population sign says: Amagasaki, Japan Country, Population 460,000 [note: Amagasaki is an actual city in Hyogo prefecture].
The Dunder Mifflin sign on the warehouse actually says Dunder Mifflin (and there are Docks 1 and 2).
Michael Scott (character's name is "Michael Scott" on his deskplate) is played by "Hiraoka Mitsuo." Dwight is "Nakano Ryouichi." Jim is "Mike ShuaNONEXISTENT-CHARACTER [but almost Shuaa if one character is rotated 90 degrees]." Pam is played by "Uta Misako." And the show's name is still "The Office," but with a sort of nuance I can't convey in English: calling it 事務所 would have been fine, but they used a demonstrative pronoun その before it, but that doesn't change the literal meaning, except to maybe mean "That Office" instead of "The Office."
Also, when meeting Pam, he basically says "That's what she said" after she asks him, "Yes, Michael, what is it?"
Also, the interaction between Michael and Dwight was nicely translated: "I'm the assistant regional manager." "No, you're the regional manager's assistant."
Finally, the producers were made-up names "Souya Sara" and "Souya Hana" (sisters??). - sovereign3, on 05/20/2008, -2/+4Thanks for that. I can read and speak Japanese, but you obviously have too much time on your hands!
However, I think I'll have to disagree about the cup. If it says "seikai de ichiban omoroi sha," wouldn't that mean the cup says the "The funniest company in the world"? Correct me if I'm wrong, but that seems about right to me.
- KyleGoetz, on 05/20/2008, -0/+54I laughed at his cup: 世界中で一番おもろい社. First, the final character is presumably not visible, but is 長, making the cup say "World's Funniest Boss." - SonicPower, on 05/20/2008, -1/+10I thought what added to the humor was the botched Japanese pronunciation.
- jmpeagle, on 05/20/2008, -1/+2well it isn't a a tonal language like the rest of east asia's languages
- KyleGoetz, on 05/20/2008, -2/+8Korean isn't a tone language like Mandarin, either.
That being said, Japanese is quasi-tonal (maybe Korean is, too? I don't speak Korean). For example, "ha-na" pronounced high-low means "nose" but high-high means "flower." Words like "hashi" (chopsticks/bridge) and "ame" (rain/hard candy) are similar. - htan, on 05/20/2008, -0/+6wtf are you talking about? i know mandarin is tonal because i speak it everyday, gl getting people to understand speaking in monotone
- tehrich, on 05/20/2008, -0/+2@KyleGoetz, those are also very easily discernible by context. You wouldn't say "Do you know how to use bridge?" or "Looks like it's going to candy today." In that sense it's not really much of a problem if you don't tone it right and I've never had a problem with anyone misunderstanding me.
- kickelephant, on 05/20/2008, -0/+2This may sound really ignorant, because I know nothing on the subject. Can you whisper in tonal languages? Or shout really loud while maintaining coherence?
- bloosteak, on 05/20/2008, -3/+1duh.
and yeah that was really ignorant. LOL
to the point of not knowing what tone means - jmpeagle, on 05/20/2008, -0/+1@htan

- da_bradler, on 05/20/2008, -17/+5I still hated his character in the british version of the office. in the british version the boss was genuinely a bad person who only cared about himself same with some other characters. - rollerboy, on 05/20/2008, -8/+109Wow that was actually funny. I should start watching SNL again. Or I could continue viewing their best skits on the internet as chosen by Digg.
- brundlefly76, on 05/20/2008, -1/+8This is the second time I have seen Jason Sudeikis impersonate Jim from The Office, and both times he has made me laugh hysterically just by raising his eyebrows.
Kristen Wiig as Pam and Bill Hader as Dwight are also outstanding, above-average SNL impersonations - the costume and makeup team deserve some serious kudos as well.
The three impersonations are so well done they really should make a weekly skit out of "The Office" - although Will Forte or Fred Armison will need to meet them with a killer Michael Scott...it would be much more entertaining than their ad nauseum political impersonations or last weeks embarrassing Sharpton/Jackson drivel.
(actually last weeks Obama/Clinton split face bit was really well done) - KyleGoetz, on 05/20/2008, -2/+8#1 - This season of SNL was extremely good. I've been watching it since the 80s, and the past 3 seasons have been steadily improving since they hired Bill Hader, Kristin Wiig, Jason Sudeikis, and Andy Samberg and the Lonely Island guys.
#2 - The last episode with Steve Carell was especially funny.- moush, on 05/20/2008, -6/+3You must have a horrible sense of humor.

- da_bradler, on 05/20/2008, -0/+8They need to introduce someone new, I'm so sick of Jan and Michelle drama.
My vote is for creed trying to take over the office.- Crisender111, on 05/20/2008, -0/+1Creed, Stanley & Meredith are under-utilized. Maybe they can shift some time from Jim & Pam (who unnecessarily get more screen time than their characters deserve)
The Office = Michael & Dwight !!! - Maver1c, on 05/20/2008, -0/+2If they made a spin-off in which Toby, Creed, and Kevin had to live together as roomates I would watch it.

- Dtopler, on 05/20/2008, -9/+3What are you talking about? According to Wikipedia, NBC ordered Season 5 of the Office on April 10th, 2008...
- Misinformant, on 05/20/2008, -10/+19MUSHI MUSHI!!
- sovereign3, on 05/20/2008, -5/+25You mean "moshi moshi" or もしもし。 It's used for "hello," but literally it means "if, if... [someone's there, please answer]."
- Herolint, on 05/20/2008, -0/+10It doesn't mean "if, if" It is from an old honorific word meaning to speak.
Moshi does mean "if" when used in the context of "moshi yoroshikereba, pantsu no ue kara de mo ii kara..." (which I'm sure is a great pickup line).- sat0shi, on 05/20/2008, -1/+2Yeah, chicks dig keigo.
- Herolint, on 05/23/2008, -0/+1I think if you're saying that to a girl, you have bigger problems than using keigo vs. "yaro ka".
- thailand1972, on 05/20/2008, -0/+1I'm not sure you're correct there about "if if" - yes "if" is "moshi" in Japanese, but either waiting or picking up on a call, of course there's someone on the other end of the line. If you ARE right though I think they should answer something like this:-
"moshi moshi" (if someone's there)
"unko ga nai, sha-ro-ku" (no ***** Sherlock, in my awful Japanese)
- Herolint, on 05/20/2008, -0/+10It doesn't mean "if, if" It is from an old honorific word meaning to speak.

- homesickalien, on 05/20/2008, -1/+1see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Romaji
- KyleGoetz, on 05/20/2008, -0/+1Yes, in its correct form it's "moshi moshi."
However (I can't remember if everyone did), but some of the characters did say "mushi mushi" in this skit. Reread Misinformant's comment with that in mind and see if you can't figure out what he was saying.- sat0shi, on 05/20/2008, -0/+2Most Americans say "mushi mushi" when trying to imitate "moshi moshi" and I can't figure out why. English has the sound of the Japanese consonant "mo"... It's the "mo" in "mode". Why can't they do it? My mom has tried millions of times and it always comes out "mushi mushi". I don't get it...
- KyleGoetz, on 05/20/2008, -0/+1Because English doesn't have the sound "mosh," but we have "mush" in plentiful supply.
- tetsuwan, on 05/20/2008, -0/+1So, Kate Moss would be Kate "Muss" in American?
- sat0shi, on 05/20/2008, -0/+1@tetsuwan:
It's not the "mo" in "moss", that is a short 'o' sound, not a long 'o' like the one in the Japanese "moshi moshi". As I said, it's as simple as saying "mode" without the "de", and then saying "she" afterwards. Say it fast and you'll say it perfectly. - KyleGoetz, on 05/31/2008, -0/+1It's also kind of like how we have the "k" and "yo" sounds in English, but Americans pronounce 京都 is "kiyoto" instead of "kyoto." It's because certain combinations of sounds don't exist in English.
It's kind of how I could complain about Chinese mixing up the "l" and "r" like they do sometimes--both sounds exist in Chinese (see "nar" - where - and "lucha" - green tea) or how Japanese people can't say "si" like in Spanish or "see" like in English. The "s" sound exists and the "i"/"ee" sound exists in Japanese. It's just that when you put them together, in Japanese the "s" becomes an "sh" sound automatically.

- shownoregrets, on 05/20/2008, -3/+39I was waiting for the "did i stutter?"
- Briii, on 05/20/2008, -3/+1They were just joshing around
- Schmapdi, on 05/20/2008, -16/+4It was lame, and it shows the complete lack of imagination of SNL, they just took an episode of the Office and everyone was speaking Japanese. That's funny because why?
I was expecting a version of the Office like the tampon commercial they had in there. But apparently Japanese tv shows are just U.S. tv shows but in Japanese.- Merb, on 05/20/2008, -0/+4You're a Negative Nancy! DIGGDOWNDIGGDOWNDIGGDOWN
- BenKenobi88, on 05/20/2008, -0/+2Duh. It was making fun of how everyone says the American Office is just like the British Office...which is just like the Japanese Office. It's just The Office in Japanese. That's the joke. I thought it was great. Might have had a few more laughs if everyone was running around being insane, but then everything insane is funnier.
- iceblademan, on 05/20/2008, -0/+3You missed the whole point. Its the transitive property, all the Office shows are based off one another, and this makes it funny by doing it to an obvious and extreme degree.
- Schmapdi, on 05/20/2008, -0/+1Except that the American Office really isn't that much like the British Office. And even with that being the premise (that they are all the same) did they really think it was worth a whole 3 minute sketch of a dubbed over Office?
- lizwearstights, on 05/20/2008, -11/+6I would wear the hell out of those tampons.
- stilesja, on 05/20/2008, -1/+2and I'm sure they would soak the hell out of your blood
- lololol1, on 05/20/2008, -8/+1When i saw it on Saturday, i was like "If I post that video on Digg it will go front page."But nooo, i didn't do it...
also, its funny cause its racist.- jmpeagle, on 05/20/2008, -1/+1if you has submitted it, I would have buried it
- jakefloyd, on 05/20/2008, -9/+4i dont get it.
- homah, on 05/20/2008, -0/+5It's an episode of the popular NBC sitcom, "The Office", in Japanese.
- iceblademan, on 05/20/2008, -0/+4Also, tampons
- shadekeiko, on 05/20/2008, -2/+16I love how they added in the morning exercises! I hated having to do those when I studied abroad. I felt like such a douchebag, lol.
- Herolint, on 05/20/2008, -0/+4I never had to do them when I lived over there, but I enjoyed watching all the douche bags who did. :)
- DownkeyKowng, on 05/20/2008, -1/+1Box of wine?
- Briii, on 05/20/2008, -8/+2Dugg but the daily motion ewwwww
- Neorio, on 05/20/2008, -6/+1A Japanese version of the office done by Japanese comedians would actually be pretty good.
- rmaddy, on 05/20/2008, -12/+1Sadly, that was funnier than anything The Office has done this season
- amdforever, on 05/20/2008, -2/+14I wish there is a button for me to digg this 5 times.
- redmyse, on 05/20/2008, -0/+1i was going to say the same thing
- Yout, on 05/20/2008, -8/+12Is it funny because they're speaking Japanese?
- ThaDRD, on 05/20/2008, -0/+6Yeah, I don't get it either. I am missing something, and I love The Office.
- DrunkTomato, on 05/20/2008, -5/+3pathetically unfunny. Was there any joke? They just re-did an already pretty lame scene in Japanese. If it was 20 seconds long, it would be funny. 4 minutes is just beating it to death with a hammer. Big letdown, especially considering how good their impersonations are!
- carfuffle, on 05/20/2008, -0/+0It's funny b/c if you are a fan of the Office you don't need to hear the words to know what they are saying. It's fun to let your imagination fill in the blanks.
- jinxplayer, on 05/20/2008, -10/+2That wasnt funny at all.
- bearythebear, on 05/20/2008, -8/+3need sub now
- paulvq, on 05/20/2008, -0/+2Not having subtitles is what makes the sketch funny in the first place.
- broderizdreagan, on 05/20/2008, -0/+0its the same exact show as the original office, if you want a translation just go watch the original.
- getatmedigg, on 05/20/2008, -4/+2Can we get a translation already!
- Herolint, on 05/20/2008, -0/+5It's hard because their pronunciations are so poor.
- jaalin, on 05/20/2008, -0/+1they're basically saying exactly what they're doing / exactly what you think they're saying... michael's mug says 'worlds best boss,' they have the assistant (to the) regional manager quip, do some morning aerobics, etc
- aishel, on 05/20/2008, -1/+69Any avid fan knows exactly what is going on. From the Best Boss cup to the jello prank, the entire thing is easy to follow. Wonderfully done.
- ThaDRD, on 05/20/2008, -2/+2OK...so just have Japanese dubbed over the regular version and it will be 8 times funnier? I just don't get this sketch.
- sexlexia, on 05/20/2008, -0/+2I don't know.. I was getting the feeling that they were mocking how one dimensional all their characters are by showing that not understanding a word they said still made it exactly the same.
- moarebelyell, on 05/20/2008, -11/+2WOW!
you guys watch the office too??
i didn't know other poeople watched that show...
its so underrated- stilesja, on 05/20/2008, -0/+15There's another bug in the new digg comment system. This post is from 2005
- Zippo, on 05/20/2008, -1/+1Wow, the cast did a really decent job with the language. Impressed.
- Miamisun, on 05/20/2008, -0/+2All in all this week was the best SNL in a long long time. A couple of Digg worthy sketches.
- gogog0, on 05/20/2008, -10/+1the office is not funny. go ahead digg me down i don't care. it's just not funny. the show is depressing and the cast is hideously ugly.
- aserer511, on 05/20/2008, -0/+8So maybe if you weren't ***** by a jackhammer sometime in your life you'd realize the cast is purposefully mediocre- just like an  real workplace
- BenPresland, on 05/20/2008, -0/+3I hate so much about the things that you choose to be.
- bigfatphony19, on 05/20/2008, -11/+3This is ***** not funny. It's just jokes from the office... I feel bad for Stephen Colbert and Ricky Gervais.
- sebastian6, on 05/20/2008, -9/+4Could this be any less funny?
- bicyclethief, on 05/20/2008, -20/+24But, seriously, the British version was way better though.
- da_bradler, on 05/20/2008, -11/+6The British version was really depressing, the good guys always lost and the bad guys always lost. Most of the characters in the british were genuinely bad people as well, not likable at all.
- Sawta, on 05/20/2008, -1/+3Right, better.
- 9bpm9, on 05/20/2008, -1/+3God your sense of humor must make people cry. I watched the UK version all the way through then I started watching the US version, and although the first 8 or 9 episodes of the US version weren't that hilarious, it gets a hell of a lot better. The UK version was too depressing to be funnier.
Except epsiode 1.4, Ricky Gervais singing was gold.
- mongrel, on 05/20/2008, -4/+10Yeah, but their Pam really WAS plain.
- Herolint, on 05/20/2008, -5/+5Personally, I think the British version has some funny moments (as most British comedies do), and I think the American version's story has a bit more depth and the characters are better developed.
Also, I like both of the shows, but while both have their funny moments, there is a bit too much unfunny stuff that weakens the shows; in my opinion.- Sawta, on 05/20/2008, -0/+7My main complaint with the US version of The Office is that they really like to beat you over the head when it comes to the jokes. It gave off this feeling that you wouldn't really have to pay attention to what's going on because Steve Carell would just make some funny face in a few minutes.
I have to admit though, Dwight was probably my favorite character above all others. The actor really nailed the character both in dialog, and in physical appearance. They do also seem to mumble a bit less in the American version.- Herolint, on 05/23/2008, -0/+1Dwight is without a doubt my favorite character in the US show. He doesn't really have an equivalent in the UK show.
- Sawta, on 05/20/2008, -0/+7My main complaint with the US version of The Office is that they really like to beat you over the head when it comes to the jokes. - Crisender111, on 05/20/2008, -9/+2Let me hear you say...
How many seasons did the British version run?
What???? I didnt hear you!
Oh! Just 2?! And the 2nd season was so bad?
Rite, British version was better. LOL- Maver1c, on 05/20/2008, -0/+4The original UK office was never supposed to go over 2 seasons.
- asiarock, on 05/20/2008, -0/+4Or maybe British television knows how to finish things while they're on top. There's nothing worse than TV programs that start strong and just slowly die. 'Lost' is a prime example, if it had concluded after two seasons, it would have been so much better.
And for the record, the only reason the British version of the office stopped after two seasons is because Ricky Gervais wanted it that way, not because it wasn't popular.- 9bpm9, on 05/20/2008, -4/+1And how many great shows are there that lasted only two seasons? Most great shows at least go five seasons, and have more than 6 damn episodes a season too. I just don't understand the way the Brits do television.
- spiraltri3e, on 05/20/2008, -0/+4You idiot. It was planned to run for two seasons. Ricky Gervias wanted to move on to Extras.
- MeatBucket, on 05/20/2008, -0/+1Dude, didnt you hear what Gervais said? British Office was inspired by the Japanese version.
- Falc, on 05/20/2008, -1/+2The British version was very good. It was original, honest and extremely funny. However! They only did 13 episodes!?! i never understood that. 2 seasons of 6 episodes with an hour long finale... I think the american version has eclipsed the British version in regards to depth of characters and storyline, which leads to funnier plot lines and better episodes.
You have to give Ricky Gervais credit though. With 'the office' and 'extras' he's proved he's an exceptional talent. (and his podcasts were downright hilarious) He's one of the few comedians/actors that i can just look at he makes me laugh... - spillwater, on 05/20/2008, -1/+2no its not. and i dont even watch the office.
- Breticus07, on 05/21/2008, -1/+1I don't know what it is... I'm sure the British version is funny and everything but it is something about the british accent that just makes it boring to me. I'm not saying it is I just can't seem to tolerate the accent lol
- da_bradler, on 05/20/2008, -11/+6The British version was really depressing, the good guys always lost and the bad guys always lost. Most of the characters in the british were genuinely bad people as well, not likable at all.
- Fordi, on 05/20/2008, -9/+3The Office, British or American, I suppose is supposed to leave me in stitches or whatever, by inevitably leaves me with an overwhelming feeling of 'eh'.
It's far more boring and far less funny. I guess you have to work in a soul-crushing corporate office to appreciate it.- Scoresheet, on 05/20/2008, -1/+3Nope, just have an appreciation for subtlety.
- Maver1c, on 05/20/2008, -0/+1agreed. the main reason i love the office is because the comedy is almost always in the delivery. a lot people i know who don't like the office just don't seem to appreciate the genius of good comedic delivery.
- Scoresheet, on 05/20/2008, -1/+3Nope, just have an appreciation for subtlety.
- Rekbert, on 05/20/2008, -2/+3Reminds me of the Mexican Star Trek skit on Mad TV.
