"It's funny 'cause it's racist" - otis12, on 05/20/2008, -8/+144Finally, a break from politics
- borez, on 05/20/2008, -10/+143I just love Ricky Gervais for his completely untouchable dry sense of humour, especially in his comments on the American Office.
- homah, on 05/20/2008, -3/+107Buried for being unrealistic. Everyone knows Michael Scott can't tell one Asian from another.
- hmunkey, on 05/20/2008, -7/+109I'm so sad the The Office (US Version) is done this season.
- rollerboy, on 05/20/2008, -8/+110Wow that was actually funny. I should start watching SNL again. Or I could continue viewing their best skits on the internet as chosen by Digg.
- strobelite33, on 05/20/2008, -8/+100Dugg for Ricky Gervais.
"Are you 'aving a laff?" - OC73, on 05/20/2008, -6/+85I love when whatshername does the shy asian girl laugh.
- aishel, on 05/20/2008, -1/+70Any avid fan knows exactly what is going on. From the Best Boss cup to the jello prank, the entire thing is easy to follow. Wonderfully done.
- jamesov89, on 05/20/2008, -1/+67Karen?
- Me0wmix, on 05/20/2008, -5/+65Woot! Regis was advertising tampons!
- DeepFriedFetus, on 05/20/2008, -19/+78Anyone else think Pam with black hair would be totally hot?
- KyleGoetz, on 05/20/2008, -0/+54I laughed at his cup: 世界中で一番おもろい社. First, the final character is presumably not visible, but is 長, making the cup say "World's Funniest Boss." It's really funny for Japanese speakers since the use of 社 means Michael is ranked #1 in the company, so it's funny because Michael would definitely buy a cup that refers to him as the entire company's head. Also "funny" is written in a slangy style, so it's actually probably a typo'ed おもしろい.
Other interesting Japanese: the town population sign says: Amagasaki, Japan Country, Population 460,000 [note: Amagasaki is an actual city in Hyogo prefecture].
The Dunder Mifflin sign on the warehouse actually says Dunder Mifflin (and there are Docks 1 and 2).
Michael Scott (character's name is "Michael Scott" on his deskplate) is played by "Hiraoka Mitsuo." Dwight is "Nakano Ryouichi." Jim is "Mike ShuaNONEXISTENT-CHARACTER [but almost Shuaa if one character is rotated 90 degrees]." Pam is played by "Uta Misako." And the show's name is still "The Office," but with a sort of nuance I can't convey in English: calling it 事務所 would have been fine, but they used a demonstrative pronoun その before it, but that doesn't change the literal meaning, except to maybe mean "That Office" instead of "The Office."
Also, when meeting Pam, he basically says "That's what she said" after she asks him, "Yes, Michael, what is it?"
Also, the interaction between Michael and Dwight was nicely translated: "I'm the assistant regional manager." "No, you're the regional manager's assistant."
Finally, the producers were made-up names "Souya Sara" and "Souya Hana" (sisters??). - hmunkey, on 05/20/2008, -0/+46Pretty cool how Steve Carrell was on it too.
- muslax27, on 05/20/2008, -4/+48Dugg for the random yet awesome Japanese tampon commercial
- efitz11, on 05/20/2008, -2/+43Don't worry, he marked their arms.
- homah, on 05/20/2008, -1/+38McCain should have played Toby.
- shownoregrets, on 05/20/2008, -3/+39I was waiting for the "did i stutter?"
- haentz, on 05/20/2008, -5/+34Best part is in the end...
- asparagusto, on 05/20/2008, -0/+28that's what she said
- homah, on 05/20/2008, -2/+29from behind
- Tzvi, on 05/20/2008, -0/+27Or leave Dwight inside Angela
- therumster, on 05/20/2008, -5/+31"Pamu pamu pamu!!"
- sovereign3, on 05/20/2008, -2/+28I was amazed at the casts' ability to speak and pronounce Japanese. Although it's not that hard, they did a fine job of picking it up in a week!
- inactive, on 05/20/2008, -1/+24You mean you wish had a girlfriend?
- inactive, on 05/20/2008, -0/+20San.
- sovereign3, on 05/20/2008, -5/+25You mean "moshi moshi" or もしもし。 It's used for "hello," but literally it means "if, if... [someone's there, please answer]."
- virtualball, on 05/20/2008, -0/+20I think he meant "it's done for this season." The producers would never leave Jim and Pam un-engaged like that.
- BestJaxx, on 05/20/2008, -9/+29I wish that I had a Japanese girlfriend.
- Breticus07, on 05/20/2008, -1/+20Actually McCain was in that episode of SNL... lol just thought I'd let you know
- sovereign3, on 05/20/2008, -4/+22What happened to her character? Personally, I thought she was hotter than Pam.
- r2builder, on 05/20/2008, -2/+19David Brent wasn't a bad person, he just tried too hard to be accepted. He redeems himself.
- Darren05, on 05/20/2008, -8/+24I would like to have seen a full Japanese cast.
- stilesja, on 05/20/2008, -0/+15There's another bug in the new digg comment system. This post is from 2005
- shadekeiko, on 05/20/2008, -2/+16I love how they added in the morning exercises! I hated having to do those when I studied abroad. I felt like such a douchebag, lol.
- amdforever, on 05/20/2008, -2/+14I wish there is a button for me to digg this 5 times.
- Rickler, on 05/20/2008, -0/+11And out of social embarrassment, left for Costa Rica just like Toby,
- Scoresheet, on 05/20/2008, -1/+11David Brent wasn't a bad person. he was a good person who tried to hard to be accepted.
- kevinmotel, on 05/20/2008, -1/+11HEY BIG TUNA!
- themastersb, on 05/20/2008, -2/+12I could get one. I just don't want to because none of the girls around here are Japanese.
- Emnsta, on 05/20/2008, -0/+10@SonicPower
Which applies to everyone... - Herolint, on 05/20/2008, -0/+10It doesn't mean "if, if" It is from an old honorific word meaning to speak.
Moshi does mean "if" when used in the context of "moshi yoroshikereba, pantsu no ue kara de mo ii kara..." (which I'm sure is a great pickup line). - SonicPower, on 05/20/2008, -1/+10I thought what added to the humor was the botched Japanese pronunciation.
- Misinformant, on 05/20/2008, -10/+19MUSHI MUSHI!!
- Aikinai, on 05/20/2008, -4/+13I agree completely that if this was done against a race that is common in America there'd be an uproar, but it's not a one-way street against the Japanese. In Japan there's not really a sense of what is and is not racism like there is in America, and they do things like this all the time without thinking twice.
Here's a comedy group pretending they're Americans learning Japanese:

And here's a random guy dressing up as Obama (including blackface) and going to the town called Obama:

Here's the original blog but it's in Japanese (click つぎへ > at the bottom to see more pages):

(Hillary even shows up on the last page)
Japanese people have no history with blackface (and its connections to racism) and don't see painting your face any different from dressing up as the person you're imitating. - thelock65, on 05/20/2008, -5/+13this season kinda sucked
- da_bradler, on 05/20/2008, -0/+8They need to introduce someone new, I'm so sick of Jan and Michelle drama.
My vote is for creed trying to take over the office. - GunmetalOne, on 05/20/2008, -3/+11"I dun't get it..."
