- inactive, on 07/11/2008, -0/+10Great one. Used to watch the re-runs religiously as a kid. Thanks Dr. Rob
- timethief, on 10/30/2008, -0/+10This is a wonderful opportunity for fans of the show and the simple, decent values that were characterized in it.
- allaboutdatiki, on 07/11/2008, -0/+10Ahhhhhnnnndeeeeeeee!
- csiunatc, on 07/11/2008, -0/+9Andy Taylor: What are you doing?
Barney Fife: Gun-drawing practice, ten minutes every day. If I ever have to use this baby, I want to teach it to come to papa in a hurry. - DocKC, on 07/11/2008, -1/+8I never did watch this show, but Ron Howard is something else for sure! He made a magical career for himself!
- robertstevenson, on 07/12/2008, -0/+6A couple of the Darling boys will be performing in Mt. Airy, NC in September during Mayberry days.
- robertstevenson, on 07/11/2008, -0/+6Brilliant, genius, king . . .
- Cryptocracy, on 08/17/2008, -1/+7I love the Earl Scruggs music (the Darlings) and the Beverly Hillbillies
- noupsell, on 07/12/2008, -0/+5I always thought it funny Howie Morris [Ernest T. Bass] the crazy backwoods guy was actually the Director of a few of the episodes. The quintessential Director gone mad. Brilliant actor. The AG show had a superb ensemble.
- Eavesdropping, on 07/13/2008, -0/+5The Andy Griffith Show is classic. It also proves that kids can be happy without PlayStation, Michael Jordan sneakers or meth. Just a fishing hole and some quality time with Dad.
- Cryptocracy, on 08/17/2008, -0/+4oops I meant the Dillards were the Darlings.... The Darlings were a fictional family of musically-inclined hillbillies in the American TV sitcom The Andy Griffith Show.
The Darlings (usually pronounced Darlin's) lived in a shotgun shack somewhere in the mountains neighboring Mayberry. The good-natured, but trouble-making Appalachian clan led by patriarch Briscoe Darling (played by Denver Pyle) would usually come into town when they had some sort of problem that Sheriff Andy Taylor would have to resolve. Briscoe was the widowed father of five grown children (four sons and one daughter) who all lived together, and each had a different musical talent. All together, the members of the family formed a jug band. They had their own set of values and rules and had little concern for matters that went on outside of their family. Due to their secluded lifestyle, their lack of social grace, and their superstitious belief in mountain lore, they were perceived by the people of Mayberry as being somewhat backward. Their arrival in town usually meant trouble for Sheriff Taylor and Deputy Barney Fife, despite their friendly relationship with the family.
The Darlings made their first appearance on The Andy Griffith Show in episode #88, "The Darlings Are Coming". In their second appearance, episode #94, "Mountain Wedding", Andy and Barney must pay a visit to the Darling's home in order to rid the family of "Ernest T. Bass", a pesky neighbor with an affinity for rock throwing, who was intent on marrying Briscoe's daughter Charlene. Their appearance on the show was always supplemented by a song (provided by bluegrass band The Dillards, who also played the Darling boys), usually with Andy accompanying them on guitar. - Jesus2007, on 07/12/2008, -0/+4One of my friends watchers every day.
- Nice2BHere, on 07/13/2008, -0/+4The wonderfully slow life of a small town is so compelling...very few people today in the US can claim such a life. We are so busy, busy, busy doing well, nothing. Getting ahead. Materialism. The Andy Griffith Show is a model for finding happiness through simplicity and friendship.
- robertstevenson, on 07/11/2008, -0/+4Not again Barn!
- shearyadi, on 07/13/2008, -0/+4Not sure if I have seen the show before :) Dugg anyway
- robertstevenson, on 07/11/2008, -0/+4and a real nice guy to boot. Other child stars could learn a lesson from Opie 'er Ron.
- robertstevenson, on 07/11/2008, -0/+4Couldn't agree more. I can watch the same show five times in a row without getting tired.
- inactive, on 07/13/2008, -0/+4timeless comedy.
- robertstevenson, on 07/11/2008, -0/+4I hope you'll be able to join the group :)
- robertstevenson, on 07/11/2008, -0/+4It will last longer than a day. Then when you think it's safe. The whistling will come back. It will never end. Sorry I got carried away. :)
- V3n0M, on 07/12/2008, -1/+4Ellie Walker (Andy's first girlfriend, the pharmacist) was HOT!
- basye, on 07/13/2008, -0/+3Watching the Andy Griffith Show in the middle of the night took me through two bouts of breast cancer--could never get enough of these shows!
- robertstevenson, on 07/12/2008, -0/+2There were minorities in Mayberry. If you watch the people in the background, you'll see several black townspeople walking down the sidewalk and being a part of town. One that comes to mind right off is when Ed Sawyer, the stranger in town, is being confronted by the towns people out on the sidewalk...that crowd contains at least one black person and maybe more.
Of course there's also Flip Conroy (played by Rockne Tarkington). He was going to coach Opie's football team on the episode "Opie's Piano Lesson" #215. In that episode, Flip says he's returned to Mayberry after is pro-football playing days are over to run his father's business. This was the first time (and only time) that a black actor was featured as a main character. Up until then, blacks were only used as extras. - robertstevenson, on 07/12/2008, -0/+2I'm still whistling.
- robertstevenson, on 07/11/2008, -0/+2Plain ole, down-home, good TV: a show about a sheriff in a town with no crime.
- robertstevenson, on 07/11/2008, -0/+2Narrator: Barney removes his lone bullet from his pocket and loads his gun
Barney: We call this a rod, pistol, the old persuador, What's another word for it Ange?
Andy Taylor: a gun.
Barney accidentally shoots the gun.
Andy confiscates Barney's gun. - robertstevenson, on 07/11/2008, -0/+2I never watched growing up. For some reason I really love it now. Along with some over-the-top comedy, there's a lot of clever, subtle humor. That's what I love. Andy really seems to get a kick out of working with his friend Don Knotts. Opie is just perfect.
- robertstevenson, on 07/13/2008, -0/+2That is exactly why I love the show.
- robertstevenson, on 07/13/2008, -0/+2If you do nothing else, please for the sake of all that is good, watch just one episode. . . . or not. : ) Seriously, there's a few good vids of the show on youtube.
- robertstevenson, on 07/12/2008, -0/+2I totally agree.
- robertstevenson, on 07/13/2008, -0/+2Wonderful point. The shows reminds us of in time in America before technology isolated kids from families.
- robertstevenson, on 07/13/2008, -0/+2It really is timeless, isn't it. Some shows I can't watch more than once. I can actually watch the same AGS episode every day for a week and not get tired of the Andy Griffith show.
- gbdc01, on 07/15/2008, -0/+1The series was originally on before my time, but even black and white reruns in the age of color television were able to hold my attention as a kid - no easy task. My favorite part was Deputy Barney and his one bullet that Andy would let him have for his gun when there was BIG trouble brewing. Too bad the even the small towns aren't that safe anymore.
- inactive, on 07/11/2008, -0/+1the naked swimming does not sound very Mayberry-ish though :)
though it is right neighborly - ya hear! - spookyttws, on 07/12/2008, -2/+3Random...
- inactive, on 07/13/2008, -0/+1Specific and pertinent
- Cryptocracy, on 08/17/2008, -1/+2cool! I always hoped Andy would've just caved in and marry Charlene Darling, bet she would have been a great time.
- inactive, on 07/11/2008, -0/+1Opie was cool...
Richie - was the coolest! - oOLiquidNightOo, on 07/13/2008, -0/+1i think the joke that you were looking for was "Jetson's" related.
- robertstevenson, on 07/12/2008, -0/+1I had no idea, ole Ernest directed some AGS's. Thanks for this.
- robertstevenson, on 07/13/2008, -0/+1I'm so happy to hear that. It got me through a couple of major tragedies in my life as well. If you get the chance, join us in the AGS group at Stumble.
- doctechnical, on 07/13/2008, -0/+1"Up until then, blacks were only used as tokens."
Fixed that for ya. -
