- mecole21, on 10/12/2007, -3/+44how bout they just put up test patterns?
- themarq, on 10/12/2007, -1/+35They should just have girls in bikinis doing jumping jacks for that hour. It would attract eyeballs and it would be cheap.
Damn, this 'being a network exec" is easy. - ImOscar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+28Arrested Development.
- TheNik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+20My Name Is Earl, The Office, Scrubs, and Heroes are enough to keep a network afloat. Grade-A shows if you ask me. ;D
- HMTKSteve, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20Hey... They're just "keeping it real"
- ReqX, on 10/12/2007, -4/+19Firefly
- linuxlizard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15All glory to the hypnotoad!
- darrenm, on 10/12/2007, -5/+18"Yeah, real stupid."
Chris Rock - wisewaif, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Um, hate to break it to you, but the Office is very much scripted.
- mecole21, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13how bout this concept: make quality shows! if you make quality shows people will watch them.
- ckohler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8By 'unscripted' I guess they mean that what comes out of people's mouths isn't always written down in advance. Other than that, those shows are most certainly scripted.
I doubt that Extreme Makover Home Edition designs the entire floor plan, electrical and such for a three story house with a built in elevator in less than 24 hours. - olik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7This is not exactly breaking news. A few years ago the scriptwriters wanted more money, so the studios told them to bugger off and we got our first round of reality tv shows. People actually watched that crap, so they kept it up. Think Survivor I, that is how old this story is.
- interiot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7... and NBC which is 9-11
- wisewaif, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Super Secret New Shows for Fall 2007 on NBC!
1. Hobovision : First person show with camera exchanged for hobo's glass eyes. See panhandling direct form the streets.
2. Amanda Congdon on a raft to New Zealand : We shove her off at the port of San Diego. Will she survive the trek o Auckland without shelter or food? Will her dance capsize the small raft?
3. Ex Studio Exec : Follow the life of Jane Fulton as she reconstructs her life after being fired for greenlighting 30 Rock.
4. Hot Tip : Each week we encapsulate one geek's digg activity. Will he or she chose to digg the newest Leo Laporte netcast story? - uptown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7"put cheap, unscripted shows on at 8"
UPN and the WB have been doing that for years..... - mecole21, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7prime time is 8-11 except for fox which is 8-10....
- pak314, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8How about Hipnotoad! (reference to futurama)
- Protoss, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5And now they do it as one! Woohoo!
- ZenMojo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Maybe if Networks would stop trying to compete with each other for the same damn timeslot we wouldn't have Veronica Mars fighting Law and Order. The problem's that NBC is pulling a D-Day with its shows, throwing them headfirst against the competition no matter who loses.
Fox pulled the same crap with Bernie Mac fighting My Wife and Kids. Their only black family show coincidentally pitted against the other network's only black family show. Then they fill up the rest of the space with damn reality shows. - techweenie1, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Seriously I would rather watch Test Patterns with the national anthem playing than watch more "reality" TV
- SwornPacifist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Bob Wright, the NBC chairman, said, “..we tried ‘30 Rock,’ which is about the funniest show on television right now...”
Really? Bob must have watched a completely different show than I did, "30 Rock" was an weird, awkward, mostly-unfunny 30 minutes. Or maybe he's just drinking the NBC koolaid - dorxincandeland, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4It's a time zone difference. Central time zone it's 7-10. East is 8-11. Since in those two time zones the shows actually play at the same "time."
- Sethbacca, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Heroes is probably the best thing on TV in along time. Honestly, you all are complaining about the bloat of "reality" tv, but I'm utterly sick of courtroom and medical dramas and csi and law and order clones. I was so upset when they cancelled Surface after just 1 season :(
- dhoefler, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Enough of the damn reality shows! That's so 2002.
- keitho, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4this is the inevitability of paying actors like the casts of Friends and Seinfeld million dollars for a single episode and royalties. as long as they don't ruin the office and my name is earl by cancelling them or putting them on at 9 on thursdays, i'll be perfectly content with whatever else they do.
- Protoss, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Too bad NBC hates Scrubs eh? First moving it from a prime Thursday night slot, to some Tuesday spot, then making it a mid-season replacement.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I used to love network TV! Yuppers, NBC had some really entertaining shows. I used to enjoy cable TV as well, ooo, so many channels, and I can record them too?! But now, with the Internets giving me on-demand access to entertaining videos, old television shows (which I just said I used to love), and new and engrossing content, such as games and pr0n, blogs and wiki-style learning on any subject... who has time for mere spectator TV?
Give my TV a keyboard and mouse and it still takes a distant 2nd place to a PC attached to the Internet. - ianbnet, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip
This could get to be a long list. I think if anything, there's more high quality TV out there now than ever before; it can just be hard to find under all the crap :/ - carn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3NBC may only have a few good shows (Earl, Office, Scrubs, ect.) but I haven't seen any good, non-cartoon, shows on other networks in quite some time.
- waz67, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4What, after cancelling Smith, which was not actually a bad show, after only 3 episodes?
I want to know what happens next dammit!!!!!
Oh wait, that was CBS. Never mind. - thatbox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3is not
- tsunamisteve, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Well this plan will do wonders for their advertisers. The money will just be pouring in.
- smuduffy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+430 rock sucks...how is that one of the funniest shows on tv...I tried to like it and it still really sucked...
- HMTKSteve, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If I wanted to watch "reality" TV I'd put on the Playboy channel...
I'd much rather live in their "reality" where every neighbor is a hot babe who needs an "Itch" scratched! - Hatefull, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I watch it just for Tracy Morgan.
- muleking, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Network sitcom TV is such *****, how about something edgey or original instead of another middle of the road Honey Mooners rip off or some whacky comedy with a gay character. Wow, he's gay!!! this is wild!!! yuck...
No problem with gays on tv, the whole over the top exploitation is just sickening. - bartclan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2..and I say IPTV will continue to develop into a brand all it's own that will kick the daylights out of network TV. I'm looking forward to the day when today's IPTV shows like Infected and Ctrl-Alt-Chicken morph into damn fine television like Arrested Development and House. I watched the birth of the Fox Network in April, 1988, and Fox has grown into a truly awesome network with some stunning audiences. So, today, we're watching the birth of IPTV--imagine what it'll look like in 15-20 years....
- garyh84, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I have a solution... move Conan to 8pm!
- Lax32, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yes, a great idea for the last place network- cut back on their budget and put even worse programming on during primetime...
- SanTe, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Six Feet Under -- great HBO series that is now in syndication on Bravo, although it will be heavily edited in places I'm sure. Worth your time anyway, as it will still be far and away better than anything else on. The last four episodes of the last season (5) comprise the best television I've ever seen. (But watch the whole series first so you get the character development.)
- garyh84, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Why the hell don't they just make a cartoon and put it on? Cartoons are generally a lot cheaper to make as the artists have to work for far less than the 4 or 5 actors.
- garyh84, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Just wish the FCC would allow that :
- tobsterius, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Season 6 of Scrubs starts Nov 30 and is now in the 9:30 slot on Thursday night. Right after the office.
- mlerner, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I've got to say there are some good shows on NBC but the majority is just low budget crap. This new cost-cutting measure will just make them even worse. The thing that really annoys me about NBC though is the longgg commercial breaks, a couple of times I was so frustrated with the commercials I felt like turning off the TV and just downloading the shows.
- ChiefUCF, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4I can't remember the last time I watched a show on NBC since everyone good left "ER".
- JohnM5, on 10/12/2007, -6/+7Prison Break, Lost
- mutatron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hmmm... looks like Studio 60 will be canceled, since hardly anyone here has mentioned it. It's a good show. I went into it being ready not to like it. It makes some good observations about the value of art to a society, besides being fun to watch.
- bitcloud, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The funniest show on australian TV at the moment is a show called "Thank god you're here" which is a really good "theatre sports" type of show (akin to, but 4000 times better than that drew carrey thing)
I don't think unscripted necessarily translates to crap, and I don't think low budget necessarily translates to crap, but they'll give whatever budget they *do* get to the same shmo's who'll just bitch about the budget, and then create ***** work to demonstrate how you can't get quality without a budget... - EntropyMan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Is anyone surprised that media consolidation leads to less quality (not to mention more media jobs going away)?
Well, I guess it doesn't matter now that we all work extra hours to keep our jobs and commute extra miles to afford our houses. Who has time for TV anyway? -
