- bballbackus, on 12/12/2007, -0/+32Glad they didn't break off their deal with bittorrent yet...
- metapop, on 12/12/2007, -0/+27yeah, they should totally get married, have a baby, and name it MSNBC... oh, wait...
- fadeout, on 12/12/2007, -1/+20You don't NEED to watch anything... but Conan O'brien, Scrubs, Heroes, The Office, My Name is Earl, Chuck... one of the strongest lineups of any network.
- PistolSO, on 12/12/2007, -4/+22Does NBC have a Microsoft fetish or something? Setting up ventures that require IE and/or Windows OS is setting themselves up for not getting business from those of us that like to use real browsers(Firefox, Opera, Safari) and those who like open source OSes(Linux). Hulu might be the only viable thing they've got so far.
- dn11, on 12/12/2007, -1/+15Ok, i have to admit, even as one of the resident "Apple haters" around this place.. this is just idiotic. And for the record I've tried Hulu - and I don't know what they're thinking. The technology isn't bad - the video looks good and streams fast, the commercials aren't that bad, but only 5 episodes?? Come on guys. People used iTunes to watch whole seasons and people like to download stuff to view on their uhhh... sandisk players?... I watch tons of video on my computer - it's basically my TV, but the general public hasn't gotten there yet. And of course they put up highlight clips in an attempt to replicate the Youtube phenomenon - the problem? Youtube allowed the viewers to decide what was great and what should be highlighted - not the obviously moronic suits at NBC
- sgyoung, on 12/12/2007, -1/+13Ok. You win. I won't watch.
- fr0mundacheese, on 12/12/2007, -2/+13I'd hope by now that the technology world would be consolidating players with content, not coming up with new ways to split them up.
- CraigJ, on 12/12/2007, -0/+10Reminds me of what happened with Disney and Pixar. We know how that worked out for Eisner...
- allaboutdatiki, on 12/12/2007, -10/+18Is there any thing on NBC that we need to watch?
- metapop, on 12/12/2007, -1/+9any company providing content who has exclusivity with a hardware company will ultimately fail. there, i've said it. by pinning the success of digital sales, which will ultimately play a more and more important role in the future to SanDisk (NBC, are you serious?!?), NBC isn't merely shooting themselves in the foot, they're aiming the *death star* at their lower torso.
- Willravel, on 12/12/2007, -2/+10I'll miss Battlestar on my iPod. Why would someone get a sandisk for what they can get free with a DVR or better with Tivo? NBC, I don't know what you think Apple did to you, but it's bad business to lose money over your pride or some silly vendetta. Apple marketed and sold your products and made them available on the most common portable video devices. You really had a package. It's like when you brake up with the virgin and she sleeps with all your friends to get back at you.
- jonstafari, on 12/12/2007, -1/+7actually, i just need to download the episodes. nbc who?
- dn11, on 12/12/2007, -0/+6at this rate you're going to need a different media player for every content provider ... oh wait, that is already happening in the HD wars. these studios are pissing me off
- fadeout, on 12/12/2007, -2/+8If anything the problem with Apple distribution is that it's still too much, I am not going to pay money for an episode of Heroes to watch on my computer when I am just going to buy a legit DVD the day it comes out. Make a good product, people buy it. Screw 'em over, they download it.
- sunchild, on 12/12/2007, -0/+6Neither GE nor NBCU own Universal Music.
- phogasmic, on 12/12/2007, -2/+8Its nice of NBC to try all these different distribution methods, Hulu is actually surprisingly cool and useful. A big reason for that is because it works on my Mac. However, sometimes I want to watch shows on my IPOD, its nice to be able to watch a show while I am in bed, or while I am on my 1 -2 hour mass transit commute. I will not be buying a Zune, nor will I be buying any other type of DRM'd player. My Iphone is my player of choice, if NBC is interested in my money then they have to accommodate me.
- MacSuxWindozSux, on 12/12/2007, -1/+6Stargate.
Battlestar Galactica.
Conan
The News...?
Oh but you imply you need an excuse as to why you can snub NBC for not worshiping Apple...
Sorry I don't have one. I heard that NBC is now offering their content online for free, ad supported. - rokinroj, on 12/12/2007, -0/+5Unfortunately for me Comcast did.
- PistolSO, on 12/12/2007, -0/+5They're actually 4th...Fox is beating them in the ratings.
- dn11, on 12/12/2007, -1/+6make that NBC, Universal, and Sci Fi Channel
- funkytaco, on 12/12/2007, -0/+5NBC's Hulu.com - despite the double meaning of the name - is not bad at all for streaming TV. But for downloads, I think they should've stuck with Apple. It works perfectly. There isn't any other partner in the current industry that could do things as well, in my opinion. Once AppleTV gets an upgrade, I think they will be hating the decision to snub Apple.
- bigfinger, on 12/12/2007, -4/+9I don’t think apple has bound any company to release media exclusively on iTunes, so your “tethered” argument isn’t much of a point.
- ravage86, on 12/12/2007, -0/+4I really don't give a ***** where they sell it, as long as I can pay $1.99 and have it seamlessly sync to my ipod.
- mym6, on 12/12/2007, -0/+4Media companies are just making things worse everyday. Remember the good 'ol days when you could buy a record, tape or a cd and it would play in whatever associated device you owned? You buy a record player and it would play every record made. Same thing with a tape or cd.
It used also be the same with TV shows. You bought a TV and you could watch TV shows whether they came in over the air, satellite or cable. Companies selling TV's compete by selling a better TV. Today this model is being destroyed by DRM. Using DRM, companies don't have to compete on quality, they can force you to buy their equipment by creating their DRM scheme and if you try to do anything about it, the DMCA is there to save them. - WiseWeasel, on 12/12/2007, -1/+5They're probably just freaked out from seeing how much power Apple's got over their Universal Music division, with the iPod hegemony and Apple's refusal to play along with industry-wide DRM schemes... These content distributors want to have the power to demand tight control over usage and redistribution, which they've lost in the digital music realm, and they're trying to do anything within their power to ensure the same doesn't happen in the video market.
- ericdano, on 12/12/2007, -2/+6Stupid strategy. Could explain why they are 3rd, and that most all their shows suck, or are starting to suck (ie Heroes/Office)
- superkendall, on 12/12/2007, -2/+6It was one of the strongest lineups, until people stopped watching because they couldn't get shows on iTunes.
I stopped watching Heros and Bionc Woman because I used to catch up on episodes I couldn't see or missed recording that way. With that option gone, I stopped watching - only Chuck remains for me as a show I watch, because it was still on iTunes (different producer even though NBC aired it). - fani, on 12/12/2007, -0/+3LOL at the virgin comment... Don't know how its applies here, but it was funny
- superkendall, on 12/12/2007, -0/+3Even if you plan to buy the DVD, if you really like the show you don't mind spending extra on support of it - at least I didn't.
- metapop, on 12/12/2007, -0/+3yeah, this reminded me of that too- when i read it just 2 comments above you.
- fadeout, on 12/12/2007, -0/+3Maybe if I at least OWNED the friggin' video I downloaded, not some DRM-laden file. What a ripoff!
- Shorties, on 12/12/2007, -0/+3Plus Psych, and Monk on USA, along with some of the other great shows on their spin off networks. (USA, Sci-Fi, Bravo, ect... ok well maybe not Bravo)
- Genady, on 12/12/2007, -0/+3Hrm... what's the name of that new channel... MSNBC? And you have to ask....
- benjony, on 12/12/2007, -0/+3I use a Mac at work and at home. If I can't download shows I like then I won't that simple. NBC doesn't know how to leverage there business into the technology world or should I say modern world. But it's nothing new in five years they'll offer shows I can watch again, I mean can't be that bad.
- shaka999, on 12/12/2007, -0/+2Their online player isn't bad and the commercials aren't too intrusive. Personally I just flip to another tab while the commercials are on....
- superkendall, on 12/12/2007, -0/+2Exactly right, sometimes I come across a series I really like on iTunes long after it aired and buy the whole thing there. With the writers strike I could have the opportunity to go back and pick up new series they aired that I never saw, from the beginning. Now that option is gone.
It's going to drive everyone to two things - series DVD rentals, and BitTorrent. - WiseWeasel, on 12/12/2007, -0/+2If that's the case, then why couldn't the release on iTunes AND the others? Personally, I won't use any of them due to the DRM, but choice is never a bad thing for the consumer.
- USB2point0, on 12/12/2007, -1/+3they shouldn't be tethered to Apple, but they should give all of those iTunes users the ability to get their content.
I guess NBC doesn't realize how stubborn most iTunes users are. For example, I love the show Heroes, but I won't watch it at ALL if it's not on iTunes. That's what I use, and I'm not switching to a bunch of crappy services just to watch it. I don't go based on what NBC decides to do.
You lost a Heroes fan, and a viewer. - WiseWeasel, on 12/12/2007, -0/+1Crap, well that shots my theory to hell...
- zoomtechtv, on 12/12/2007, -2/+3NBC stands for "Nut Ball Cockers"
- bigfinger, on 12/12/2007, -1/+2Dugg for Shouldnt be the only game in town.
- WiseWeasel, on 12/12/2007, -1/+2No, we do NOT need merging of playback devices and content. We DO need to split them up, so that content distribution is completely independent from playback devices. If I'm buying content to own, I must be able to use it on any device I choose, regardless of vendor. I will not give my money to buy content that can't be converted to any standard format. I bought DVDs because they could be ripped and converted. I'll buy HD-DVD and BluRay discs for the same reason. I will NOT spend a dime on digital downloads with complex DRM systems preventing me from accessing the content on my own terms. If I'm not given the option of paying for such content, then I will pirate it. I refuse to support a vendor that treats me like a criminal.
- Burn, on 12/12/2007, -0/+1Not under Linux/OS X though.
- WiseWeasel, on 12/12/2007, -0/+1Correct, and I won't even feel bad about it. Treating me like a criminal makes me want to act like a criminal. They need us more than we need them... For me, DVDs have an acceptable value proposition because I can rip them, convert them, and make backups. HD-DVD and BluRay will be the same, so I will likely BUY those as well. It's just those formats that can't be reasonably expected to stay cracked wide open, allowing me to access the content I want on the devices I want, that I will continue to ignore and fight against.
- WiseWeasel, on 12/13/2007, -0/+1You'd be losing that money, because I know for a fact it doesn't.
- marct1974, on 12/12/2007, -1/+2I catch both those shows on the NBC.com website each week because I am not at home to see them. It doesn't have to come from iTunes
- metapop, on 12/12/2007, -0/+1just because NBC doesn't sell it on iTunes anymore doesn't mean you can't have it on your iPod.
it's a secret.
www.bittorrent.com
*cue legend of zelda fanfare* - bigfinger, on 12/12/2007, -1/+2damn, I should have logged in and hit submit faster, thats for the heads up, the world is now a better place.
- highPhone, on 12/13/2007, -0/+1lol, thank's for listing these. I actually torrented all of them, didn't even know they were from NBC till now
NBC still blows - WiseWeasel, on 12/12/2007, -0/+1Woops, ignore what I said. NBC Universal is unaffiliated with Universal Music Group. Maybe they're just feeling empathy for them... : P
