- bananasluggy, on 09/04/2008, -0/+147They can bust a myth without letting people know how exactly to abuse the technology themselves. They did a segment on fingerprint scanners and showed that you could fake it by replicating a fingerprint, but they deliberately left out any vital information for doing it yourself. (Basically, if you can't figure out how to do it yourself, you're not smart enough to do it at all.)
I do find it amusing... people give up security in the name of expediency and then wonder how their lives got hacked. - ControlcChris, on 09/05/2008, -2/+125I reject your reality, and substitute my own.
- SSPink, on 09/05/2008, -0/+119"I'm not sure how much of this story I'm allowed to tell"
Apparently a lot less than you did. - Adamande, on 09/05/2008, -0/+94I don't think Savage is this stupid. Throwing out accusations in front of a conference and cameras like that, without checking any facts and in effect lying to everyone just seems a bit too sloppy for him. I'm suspecting that everything happened exactly as Savage describes, he's gotten some pretty nasty threats both from Discovery and various RFID-manufacturers after the video became a hit on the net, and now he's feeding the public a bs cover up story to save his job.
- branndon, on 09/05/2008, -2/+51I got a freakin' headache just trying to read that description.
- drex8, on 09/05/2008, -0/+46Here's a translation of the story by "badasscat" on this comment page: http://news.cnet.com/8601-13772_3-10031601.html?co ...
"Discovery Channel: Adam, we don't like what you said about us last month.
Adam: Oh no?
Discovery Channel: No. And further, we'd like you to "correct" it. As would our buddies at AMEX, Mastercard, Visa and Discover.
Adam: And why would I do that?
Discovery Channel: Well, see, here's your contract, right? And if we just take this cigarette lighter here...
Adam: No, wait! Clearly, I had my facts wrong.
Discovery Channel: That's all we've been saying." - tenio, on 09/05/2008, -0/+43Anyone else think forcing savage to do an apology is counter-productive?
It just increases awareness of the original video b/c more blogs are talking about his response.
If they didn't say anything it would just eventually blow over. - oxphantomxo, on 09/05/2008, -8/+47I for one welcome our corporate overlords.
- butcharuski, on 09/05/2008, -2/+39your not the least bit curious that a total stranger can steal all of your credit card information without even touching your cards?
- TonyTheTerrible, on 09/05/2008, -2/+34Mythbus... OH WAIT WHAT?
Advertising owns the world - inactive, on 09/04/2008, -12/+44I think it's interesting that those guys were even trying to bust that myth. It seems a far cry from Mentos and Diet Coke.
- cryonix, on 09/05/2008, -0/+30I loved when they censored the procedure on how to make Nitrous Oxide, when the little information provided and visual cues were enough for someone so inclined to make it to figure out.
All I need is a little bit of *moo* and some *quack quack* and I'm set. - palehorse864, on 09/05/2008, -1/+27Translation for those who don't understand Latin.
Mea Culpa = My bad! - sillyelf74, on 09/05/2008, -0/+26They do the same thing when they make home made explosives - they don't show you how to make them, nor do they tell you the ingredients. Like you said, if your not smart enough to know how to do it, most likely you will never be able to do it.
- estacado, on 09/05/2008, -0/+25Plausible or Busted?
- GothAlice, on 09/05/2008, -0/+233 miles. With sufficient gear, RFID has been read from 3 miles, though for practical purposes RIFD can be easily read from 40 feet.
Think twice about those 'speedpass' cards. - TheInfamousOne, on 09/05/2008, -0/+19yeah she did, and the implant needle was freaking huge
- sockpuppets, on 09/05/2008, -0/+18FRDI: Making the dyslexic confused.
- publiclurker, on 09/05/2008, -0/+18Considering that his show is on their channel, I'd think that was obvious.
- TheMachine1, on 09/05/2008, -1/+19I watched that entire video series and he repeatedly said it was "Discovery Channel" that had made the final decision on a number of show topics(Not limited to the RFID credit card topic). So no question it is Discovery Channel calling the shots and Adam that is their lap dog.
- Laminarcissus, on 09/05/2008, -2/+19While I appreciate that there might be some loose threads worth pulling here, making a "he'd never just say things without considering them carefully first" argument around Adam Savage isn't really where I'd place my bets. This is, after all, a man who burned off his own eyebrows.
Were it Jamie on the other hand... - smashingmonkey, on 09/05/2008, -0/+15You suck at flaming.

- dsmx, on 09/05/2008, -0/+13Reality is an illusion created by the lack of alcohol in the blood stream.
- bagboyrebel, on 09/05/2008, -0/+12The stuff they do from movies is usually something that either looks plausible or is widely believed to be true.
- uncoveror, on 09/05/2008, -0/+11RFID is insecure and cannot be made secure. If it is readable at all, it is readable by unauthorized persons, and the data, no matter how encrypted, will be decrytped. Credit card companies and the government with new passports have a new toy, and they are going to play with it. Security and common sense be damned.
- theaceoffire, on 09/05/2008, -0/+10And guess who told them to say that?
- itsradBrad, on 09/05/2008, -0/+10Why haven't we seen tons of blogs etc. proving the hackability of RFID?
I think it's only a matter of time. - Adamande, on 09/05/2008, -0/+10True that, but this wasn't a playful demonstration in chemistry where he sacrificed a few hairs for ratings. He was dropping names here. Do you think the man is dumb enough to risk reprimand for his entire network by lying on camera about what they now claim to be an insignificant matter? Why would he do that? This doesn't sit right with me.
- publiclurker, on 09/05/2008, -1/+10Huh? They blow ***** up, that's why we watch. Well, that and Kari, but since my wife watches it with me, it's because they blow ***** up.
- matrixbandit, on 09/05/2008, -0/+9The fear from the CC companies wasn't that Mythbusters would tell everyone how to hack RFID chips. Their fear was simply that Mythbusters would expose beyond a shadow of a doubt (to their huge audience) that RFID chips are insecure and anyone using one is effectively leaking information wherever they go.
To think about it another way, if the CC companies really had faith that their RFID chips were secure, wouldn't they actively WANT people like Mythbusters to test them and spread the word about how safe they are? - Gudlyf, on 09/05/2008, -1/+10"... if your not smart enough to know how to do it, most likely you will never be able to do it."
Well I think we found your Achilles heel ... - TheAssuager, on 09/05/2008, -1/+9Did anyone watch the episode? Did Kerry really get one implanted in her arm? The whole segment smelled a bit fishy.
- honesttussey, on 09/05/2008, -0/+8We have, you just haven't searched for them.
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&client=firefox- ... - Exekutor, on 09/05/2008, -0/+8I worked for a toilet-cleaning company. Totally hackable.
- fuzzmeister, on 09/05/2008, -0/+8Considering that the show's for entertainment, rather than actual scientific discussion, I don't have a huge problem with them being part of a corporation.
- rubored, on 09/05/2008, -0/+7SHOW IT ALREADY!
***** Credit Companies! - OpCzar, on 09/05/2008, -0/+7Or catholic people, gasp!
- Rivetgeek, on 09/05/2008, -0/+7no. now go away you ***** parasite.

- Rivetgeek, on 09/05/2008, -0/+5Uh yeah thats pretty much just paranoid. Just because you have a debit card doesnt mean its gonna have rfid. ANd not having credit cards...good luck buying a house ever.
- inactive, on 09/05/2008, -0/+5That isn't mythbusting, that's product testing.
- tech42er, on 09/05/2008, -0/+5That's kind of the point. For legal/liability reasons, they can't say it on the air but it's obvious if you know what you're doing.
- kjj254, on 09/05/2008, -1/+6WOW!!! just wow. I had heard a bit about his initial statement, this retraction REALLY makes me wonder. 'We' all are aware of the security issues; 'They' are really terrified of 'Joe Public' being informed of how weak the security is. He didn't have to actually be a party to the call to hear the 'office' gossip about what transpired.... Tinfoilhat maybe; I cancelled my debit card three years ago and to this day rarely if ever use a credit card except for relatively major purchases. Yes it is a hassle to go to the bank to get cash from my direct deposited pay... but i for one am more convinced everyday that is the way to go. Screw the CORPORATE OVERLORDS !
- thebaron2, on 09/05/2008, -0/+5Sorry for the hijack, but here's the original clip of him talking about the RFID thing.
