- tjpeople, on 10/10/2007, -1/+36love the pre airs
- Dysarthria, on 10/10/2007, -7/+38I just leaked some massive air myself, but I can't say I'd want that promoted.
- phineous, on 10/10/2007, -2/+30Showtime's original programming leaked about two weeks early last year also.
- coheedcollapse, on 10/10/2007, -1/+25How long until you guys learn that spamming really doesn't help at all? Are people on Digg really stupid enough to click on ***** spam links and digg you up, or are you just stubbornly persistent?
- kindrobot, on 10/10/2007, -0/+18Heroes generated huge advance buzz last year when the pilot was leaked. It's great promotion, IMHO.
Of the ones I've seen so far....(NO spoilers)
Dexter - 1st 2 episodes of new season - Better than first season so far, and the 2 eps are fairly self contained, story wise with a larger season-long arc in full swing. 5 stars.
Aliens in America - Very funny in parts, needs some polish. Has great potential as a decent comedy. 3.5 stars.
Californication - Good start and nice 30 minute format works well for this. Could be depressing if longer. Works great, just like Entourage is always short and sweet. Very well written but needs to focus less on uniformly augmented boobage and focus more on characters. 4 stars.
Chuck - First of what will probably be many "geek with special powers" series coming up. Has an office space meets Alias feel to it. A bit of geek cred and good action as well as genuinely hilarious moments makes me give this 4 stars.
Pushing Daisies - Pushing their luck. Best of the bunch, but probably has the least probability of surviving. If you like quirk and great dialogue, you'll give this 5 stars as I did. Think Amelie meets Wonderfalls and light horror. Wha? Yeah. See?
Reaper - Pilot directed by but NOT written by Kevin Smith. But you'd never know it. It looks like it's directed by someone with better visual skills than Smith but it seems written by him with it's great but very uniform style. The other "geek gets special powers" show. There's great effects, great comedy and great performances. 5 stars (but can they keep the momentum going without Smith and his influence?)
The Sarah Connor Chronicles - If you can sit through a Terminator about as menacing as a Gap model, the other model kicks ass to balance things out. Can they keep this interesting over a season? Hard to tell if they can barely keep one episode interesting. Needs BIG work before it will survive and some major universe expansion. I give it 3 stars. - Yamoth, on 10/10/2007, -1/+17I would say this is a pretty great promotion tool if it were indeed leaked early.
- coheedcollapse, on 10/10/2007, -0/+15I noticed that as well. I freaked out because every day I'd get a preair - some a week or two in advance, some months.
I have to say my current favorite is Reaper. Love the direction that the show is going in and the humor is just great. Looking forward to checking out what it'll become.
Also have to say seeing early Dexter was amazing. God I missed that show. - Protoss, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12I'm loving these leaks. That Weeds cliffhanger was really freaking annoying, and of course getting a taste of more Dexter is just great.
- Marijuana, on 10/10/2007, -3/+12WEEDS! I liked that show :)
- bstolzberg, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9The new Dexter EPs are Awesome! The show just got so much better.
- shacknasty, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9Weeds and Dexter are both awesome shows. Well worth checking out if you haven't already.
Besides, aren't The Office, Lost and 24 all on the off season to these shows? - 0zzy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Dude, I love Dexter...
*starts searching bittorents* - r0b1, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7It's promotion by the studios. They know it's going to get out anyway, so they accept this fact and leak it themselves. They're becoming realistic.
- Protoss, on 10/10/2007, -3/+8Heh, episode 3 of Weeds just leaked, so I'm now hoping for the entire season to leak.
- BerenTW, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5not screeners in the the way that you get movie screeners with the "This is the property of X" coming across periodically. They are straight up ep rips from a DVD.
- Dweller99, on 10/10/2007, -3/+8yeah its been happening for 3 or 4 years now at least, and always manages to spur chatter about the upcoming shows.
- ThinkBox, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7YOU like THAT show!?!? I for one am surprised!!
- evilpig, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7WEEDS! I've been waiting for this season. The last episode left me hanging for so long :(
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Piracy or Promotion?
Who cares? I just want to watch the shows. - CDoug03, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Showtime employee(s) obviously leaked the material. Whether or not they did it with permission from management, that remains to be seen.
- DextaRussell, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4It's going to be a long night...
- ditroia, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Have only Seen Dexter [Top Show, Loved Season 1], and Reaper [Pretty Cool], so Far but will check the others out. As an Aussie who won't get to see a lot of these programs on our TV, It's great to be able to check em out, and If I like them I'll grab the DVD. I'd Say some are being released intentionally by the networks.
- leontes, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Give me season five of the Wire, please. Omar's calling.
- twentysf, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4I don't know how it might relate to this issue of someone uploading a promotional review dvd, but in general HBO does a good job of keeping their data locked down. I've actually done several penetration tests on their network (one with the specific intention of compromising a server which houses programming content before it is uploaded via satelite) and they were well-secured.
- dewdrinker19, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Where's LOST? :( haha
- fugazied, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4How many plastic bags are down there!! Hes been a busy boy ;)
- JasonQG, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I've been dying to check out Pushing Daisies. It sounds so good that it's destined to be cancelled, but I'm gonna enjoy every minute of it.
- Shorties, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Weeds yes! and Chuck, man I have been looking forward to checking that show out, all I hope for now is the American pilot for "The IT Crowd" gets leaked I really want to see if that adaptation is going to be as good as the office adaptation.
- ShadedSpriter, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3totally agree with you about everything you have said I am looking forward to another great year to be a geek with highspeed internet here in the UK.
- rajanKazhman, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3The Sarah Connor Chronicles are embarrassing
- indigit4l, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Where's HBO's leaks?
- cpr86, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Totally agree. I thought the first season was great, but I really like where they are taking the story in season 2
- Cirrius, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Hey here's an idea...instead of "leaking" the first 2 episodes of your new show and driving traffic to questionably legal torrent sites where users will have access to other files you would just as soon sue them for downloading, just put the damn things on your website.
- nihility, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Now that they know when it's going to end I'm pretty sure it's going to start going somewhere. Doesn't start until February though so I'm not counting on a leak.
- rapier8, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3I don't care if it's promotion or not, I've been downloading and watching them all. (weeds ep3 was also released today)
- Protoss, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Damn, Bionic Woman just leaked...these pilots are making it so easy to pick and choose with shows to stick with.
- AggieTales, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Sarah Connor Chronicles are definitely a "piracy" as the show isn't planned to be released for at least 6 month and at the beginning it states that its a review copy for color correction and such.
I think its the same with Reaper b/c it clearly states its a promotional copy - thegcinfo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2From personal experience a lot of that is promotion. The studios make it seem like its a big no no to make all the pirate kiddies think they are getting away with something. However, it is usually someone in a group has a contact at a major station and that contact feeds them the preairs with the very quiet, undercover blessing of the network or studio. I think its smart marketing while allowing people to pursue their hobby of capping shows.
- maexus, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Haven't seen Weeds but I love Dexter.
- Sacrifice, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Out of curiosity I watched "The Sarah Connor Chronicles", it was alright. I like some of the story ideas, which tie in with the first two films. The two female actors attempt to be "tough chicks" just doesn't come off as believable. The show also rips lines and scenes directly from Terminator 2, which comes off rather silly. Never-the-less, I may give the show a chance.
- Protoss, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I believe (from what I've wiki'd) Pushing Daisies will lead into the new Grey's Anatomy spin-off, which is scheduled to air on Wednesdays, so don't know how that will work.
- leontes, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I'm all about Pushing Daisys. It's brilliant, and I'm telling everyone to see it. This advertisment approach is what I like to think of as 'plausabile denialabilty' marketing and it's brilliant. As, if you have a good product, it sells it to have word of mouth buzz being spread around by those interested enough in caring to download it. You don't want to support copywright infringement but you do want people talking about your product, hence you let the product be known. If you have a show like pushing days, you are partially on the way to golden.
- NextGenXbox, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Pushing Daisies and Chuck were pretty good. Chuck will probably get cancelled because it has too many geek/gamer references and that doesn't fly in primetime on NBC. Pushing Daisies might stay on the air if they give it a good lead in program like Grey's Anatomy or Desperate Housewives... or else it will get lost in the schedule.
- jron, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Check out Brotherhood for some quality programing. If you like old school Sopranos and The Wire, you will love Brotherhood. Smartest show since Deadwood.
- brokencode, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Dexter is the best show out there. Just download it and see for yourself.
- fugazied, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Dexter looks like its going to be another great series. Pushing Daisys feels a little too disney imo. Well made but its wrapped like a kids show.
I agree with the rest of what you said apart from reaper, Kevin Smith has had a few funny films, but that clerks style of film making is stamped all over it and its pretty tired now (its 2007, not 1997, comedys need more insight and intelligence to stand out imo).
and.. Sarah Connor Chronicles, which I found suprisingly decent. Summer Glau is always a fav actress of mine so maybe I am biast. But the actors were all decent and it could do well if the writers can keep the plot moving for a full season.
All of the shows obviously leaked by studios. They are probably doing market research on the number of peers in the torrents now.... - pebcake, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2You never know...
- fugazied, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1It doesn't feel too 'Disney' to you? Like it was from a kids channel on pay tv? That was my main reservation about it... cheesy (maybe I need to watch it again if its so brilliant ;) ).
- tmcdigg, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Broadcast TV is DEAD, now the shows produced on "major" broadcast networks: abc, nbc, fox, cbs
here's some acronyms that may fit: abc= all 'bout the cash, nbc= now bought (by) corporations, cbs=cheaper by syndication (35years of BOB BARKER??? WTF!!), fox=funds (cash) over xerox (rather than simply reporting the news, a cable-tv like spin network before it was 'in vogue'.. usually conservative) - Sacrifice, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I read the synopsis of the show, sounds very similar to a show called Brimstone (A show that was unfortunately canceled).
