- Zippo, on 02/11/2009, -0/+67The delay seems kind of stupid if you ask me... The public's had since mid-2005 to prepare for this and make the transition.
- mickaloha, on 02/12/2009, -0/+27They haven't had enough time, people! We need to delay this switch for at least 5 more years! Think about the person that might not know! He missed all the commercials on tv, advertisements in newspapers and the radio. You know there is that guy out there that doesn't know and you can't switch until he does.
- goodinohio, on 02/12/2009, -1/+22Turn it off! Idiots will always have a problem, F'em
- Barackalypse, on 02/12/2009, -0/+17Why would a tv station want the hassle and expense of maintaining two different broadcast systems any longer than necessary?
- MarkusX, on 02/12/2009, -0/+16Rightly so.
The people who haven't prepared yet, don't watch or care enough about watching TV anyways.
Otherwise they would have seen the announcements and bought a converter a long time ago.
The lack of coupons is just an issue to resolve, but not a reason to delay it for everybody. The feds could also give out reebursement checks if you have already bought a converter fully on your own expense. - TheAlpacaHerder, on 02/12/2009, -0/+13Well, since the delay was a permissive one what would one expect? Few annual budgets planned on further operating an analog transmitter in tandem with a digital one. This was a problem created within the delay itself.
- Asheis, on 02/12/2009, -0/+13They're essentially paying for the converter boxes.. anyone that refuses to switch at this point is just plain.. dumb.
I have no problem with this. - inactive, on 02/12/2009, -0/+13If people aren't ready to convert over now, they never are going to be ready. Congress has already delayed the transition before. People can just spend the $40 to get a converter box if they really value television and can't get the box coupons.
- Barackalypse, on 02/12/2009, -1/+12Some people should have submitted their coupon requests earlier. I got mine in May of 2008 even though I have both an ATSC tuner in my tv and get unencrypted QAM channels from my cable provider.
- azwethinkweizm, on 02/12/2009, -1/+11Who are these people who don't have a digital tv or are still using bunny ears and why should we care?
- mwrl, on 02/12/2009, -3/+12Thanks Uhbama for wasting even more taxpayer money.
- TheEpicChocobo, on 07/28/2009, -0/+9Yeah that's fine with me. I think most people probably don't care really either way.
- Y0tsuya, on 02/12/2009, -1/+9Look at it as a lesson learned, DON"T PROCRASTINATE!
- TVarmy, on 02/12/2009, -0/+8It makes a little sense considering that some people didn't get their coupons for some odd reason on the government's side, but the delay was so short notice it doesn't really matter at this point.
- OmegaWolf, on 02/12/2009, -0/+8The reason people who have switched to DTV are angered by the delay is that DTV stations aren't being broadcast at full power right now, so our DTV signals are anemic compared to what they should be. We have been set for February 17 for the past eight months. What's the excuse of some mouth breather who has seen the ads, but still not upgraded?
- DevinKev, on 02/12/2009, -0/+7So watching TV is an entitlement now? Maybe these rock dwellers need to get off their asses and get out in the world...maybe look for a job?
- inactive, on 02/12/2009, -1/+8Or go a couple weeks without TV...
- Koushiro, on 02/12/2009, -0/+6My Grandmother just got a digital capable TV and is loving it. She's got better picture and sound as well as more channels then she had previously. It was a win/win situation for her.
- kocurejd, on 02/12/2009, -0/+6People have known about the switch for years. Over a 2 year period, you could save up 5 cents a day (do the math) and you'd have the $40 necessary to buy the damn box without the coupon. Just because some people would rather spend their hard-earned cash on lottery tickets, vodka, and rims doesn't mean we should screw over the rest of the country.
- Twee, on 02/12/2009, -1/+7Why don't you just get a nice new TV that has a digital tuner built-in?
- Y0tsuya, on 02/12/2009, -1/+7All of the converter and half of the TVs are made in China.
- Machoslut, on 02/12/2009, -0/+5I plan on letting my tv lapse into oblivion... Can still use it to play with my Wii.
- ilovegarnet, on 02/12/2009, -0/+5It's not that bad: Fox, ABC, NBC, CBS, PBS, etc, are over-the-air. Not everyone can afford cable!
- Hurricane, on 02/12/2009, -0/+5Yeah, 99% of the money for boxes and TVs is going overseas, that is because we gave up our electronics manufacturing industry decades ago.
- Hurricane, on 02/12/2009, -0/+4Coupons have been available since Jan 1st 2008, read the damned news and quit procrastinating and you wont loose out.
- Oracle95, on 02/12/2009, -0/+4Let's hope that this doesn't fall aside the same way that the United States decided not to convert to the Metric System back during the Carter Adminstration. (I guess the old peanut farmer thought it was just "too hard.")
- unusualbob, on 02/12/2009, -1/+5***** yes! extending that stuff was a huge mistake.
- esc27, on 02/12/2009, -0/+4If only we had adopted metric system the economy would be fine, global warming non-existent, Israel and Palestine would be a model of peace and prosperity...
- Hurricane, on 02/12/2009, -0/+4I ordered mine the day they were available, Jan 1st 2008, read the damned news sometime and you won't be living under a rock and left without a coupon.
- Nothlit, on 02/13/2009, -0/+4Digital TV and rabbit ears are not mutually exclusive.
- Armando57, on 02/12/2009, -0/+3Despite how backwards Americans like to call us in Mexico, at least we figured it out.
- Bloodwine, on 02/12/2009, -1/+4I still don't understand what the big deal is for a majority of Americans. If you have cable or satellite, then you don't need a digital TV or converter box. This is only for people who watch over-the-air TV, correct?
- Zippo, on 02/12/2009, -0/+3It's 2009. Get with the times.
- deadjoe, on 02/12/2009, -0/+3The stations staying analogue until June 12 want to keep a larger audience for their advertisers. However, I find this a flawed concept. If people couldn't get the message from those persistent DTV commercials to get a converter box, the likelihood that they would respond and/or pay attention to other advertisements is pretty slim.
- azwethinkweizm, on 02/13/2009, -0/+3Welcome to 2009!
- Nothlit, on 02/13/2009, -0/+2Correct. But they've done such a horrible job of educating people about it, that relatively few probably understand that.
- sock2828, on 02/12/2009, -0/+2My local TV provider has been all digital for a year..
- Charklii, on 02/12/2009, -1/+3http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Analog_television
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Analog_signal
You're welcome :) (compare to Digital Signal) - carlosos, on 02/12/2009, -0/+2I care because I heard that some stations are allowed to increase their signal strength after going completely digital. The longer they have both, the longer will the digital signal suffer. It isn't really a big problem for me since I get most channels without problems but there are some channels where the signal isn't perfect yet and I hope after the switch it will be perfect and I don't want to use an outside antenna to fix the problem :)
- SIRBERUS, on 02/12/2009, -1/+3Procrastinate what? I applied as soon as retailers around me started carrying a good selection of digital boxes...
Had I applied too soon, like in January of 2008, I would have risked the coupon expiring before i could buy a box. - antdude, on 02/12/2009, -0/+2Me with a 13 years old 20" CRT TV and VCR. :)
- str1, on 02/12/2009, -2/+4Good to know!
- deadjoe, on 02/12/2009, -0/+2Two words... broadcast power.
I live at the edge of the digital cliff. When the locals drop their analogue and increase their digital broadcast power, I will be able to receive a stable signal. Unfortunately, I will have to wait 4 months because others were not proactive. - Meocross, on 02/12/2009, -0/+2You guys are still watching tv?
- Asheis, on 02/12/2009, -0/+2Thats not what this is about. ;)
- antdude, on 02/16/2009, -0/+1azwethinkweizm: Um, thanks. CRT and VCR forever. :P
- michaelamyers, on 02/13/2009, -0/+1Sean Connery: I'll take ANAL og for $400, Alex.
- Hurricane, on 02/12/2009, -1/+2I live in the sticks and I bought my boxes a week after getting the coupons (March 2008) there were only 2 boxes available around here, I got 2 of the early Zenith boxes and they have proven to be better than later boxes people I know have bought.
I am afraid that the waiting for better boxes was a form of procrastination. - TVarmy, on 02/12/2009, -0/+1DevinKev: I agree with you to a degree, but at the same time the government is mandating a total conversion to a new format. People would lose their TV service because of a government action, so providing a coupon is the least the government could do. It's a small thing, but it's the principle that matters. Think of it like a payment from eminent domain for the one to three square feet of space they're taking in your living room.
I am for the conversion, though. It frees up bandwidth that can be better used for other wireless technologies, like long range wireless internet service. - 818digg, on 02/11/2009, -4/+4At first I thought that a delay might be a good in this economy, but the switch forces people to go out and buy new tv's or converters. Anything on a large scale like that is good for an ailing economy.
It's good to keep on track. -
