- 350Zed, on 04/03/2009, -8/+18I like the show, but some of the "science" it showcases is laughable. I think they need better consultants telling them what's a stretch of the imagination versus what is ridiculous.
- Urgoz, on 04/03/2009, -1/+9You've posted this exact same comment 26 times.
Go away. - drex8, on 04/03/2009, -0/+7Good article Ars! Pretty good read. I have been following Fringe and got kind of addicted to it. I was only aware of the "Observer" and the "grids" pattern. Didn't know about the other clues Ars presented here. Does pique my interest quite a bit.
Well, thankfully Fringe is coming back on April 7th. American Idol was raping that time slot. - fzammetti, on 04/03/2009, -0/+7I'm just glad that this show is getting a little attention now rather than after it's canceled... maybe Fox can be persuaded to not screw the pooch this time around and let at least one show this century run to SOME sort of real conclusion.
- DaviDTC, on 04/03/2009, -0/+6There are a lot of similarities. Plots being one and I find that Olivia and Mulder are pretty much the same. Both say and do things that their co-workers do not believe and in the end it turns out they were right. Some of the stuff they do there are no explanations (that I see) for them to do so or say so.
- jonjonblazezany, on 04/03/2009, -0/+6I hate American Idol for keep the show off for so long. BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO American idol boo.
- Qumahlin, on 04/04/2009, -0/+6The code is really just a cryptic advertisement for whatever JJ Abrahms next project is. I'm waiting for them to somehow introduce Walter as the creator of the island.
- EskNerd, on 04/03/2009, -0/+6You dumb bastard. It's a schooner, not a sailboat.
- bubbameister33, on 04/03/2009, -0/+6Need more creepy bald dude.
- teamgwho, on 04/03/2009, -2/+7The X-Files ripped off quite a few things from other movies, tv shows and novels. Stuff like "Ice" which was a ripoff of the Thing for example. That said, as long as it's not jsut doing the exact same thing, and they put their own spin on the idea, I have no problem with that. Not on the X-Files and not on Fringe.
- inactive, on 04/03/2009, -1/+6I got it, it's a sailboat.
- Janv1er, on 04/03/2009, -1/+6I'm pretty sure it'll have something to do with the Illuminati.
- bubbameister33, on 04/04/2009, -0/+5BOOOOOOOurns!!!
- LMN8R, on 04/03/2009, -0/+5Funny. I watch TV for entertainment and compelling stories, not the hope that everything will wrap up in a nice neat package in the end.
"I feel sorry for anyone who" can't appreciate the amazing journey, and considers inevitable destination the only worthy element.
Personally, it's far more of a "waste of time" to watch a ***** show with a decent payoff than watch an amazing show like Lost or a good, entertaining show like Fringe whose payoff might be underwhelming. - inactive, on 04/03/2009, -0/+4It's not a bad show if you don't pay attention to the science. Some of the stuff they have on the show is so out there, you have an easy time just ignoring the blatant impossibility of it. Unlike CSI, which couldn't get peroxide to react with blood at concentrations below 30%.
- inactive, on 04/04/2009, -0/+4YOU KNOW WHAT? THERE IS NO EASTER BUNNY! OVER THERE IS A JUST A GUY IN A SUIT!
- jcaino, on 04/03/2009, -0/+4Crap. Now I have to go and re-watch the first season tonight.
- Kinsbane, on 04/03/2009, -1/+5I'm confused.. why do you feel sorry for me enjoying what I watch?
- teamgwho, on 04/03/2009, -0/+4Still annoyed at the comic con guys who thought scheduled the fringe panel on sunday was a good idea.
that said, I am reassured by recent events on lost that the writers did know for the most part, where the story line was going well in advance. Case in point: locke is visited in mid season 4 by Richard Alpert who gives whom several items including a compass. Locke gives the compass to Alpert in early season 5 when he goes back to the 50's. There are many many more examples. I say all this because I was so worried about lost and Fringe ending up like the X-Files, where they have created this huge mythology and they had no idea what they were going to do with it all. Hell, CSM was never even conceived of as being central to the plot till midway thru season 1 of XF. I am now very confident about Lost, and that makes me feel somewhat more confident about Fringe, especially since things like Mr Baldy have been appearing since the 4th episode. - bubbameister33, on 04/03/2009, -0/+4This is a TV show. It is science fiction.
- DaviDTC, on 04/03/2009, -1/+5Seems there are times where they don't even want to do the science so Olivia just gets a random gut feeling about something and it turns out to be true. It is like they ran out of time to give a weird science explanation, or they just didn't want to finish the writing for certain things.
- bubbameister33, on 04/04/2009, -0/+4Quiet you.
- SketchaMPM, on 04/03/2009, -4/+8I lost count of how many plot elements on this series were ripped from 'The X-Files'.
- MaxxusFlamus, on 04/04/2009, -1/+4because he needs SOMETHING in his life to find his existence justified.
- inactive, on 04/03/2009, -1/+4Just because you want to have sex with MrBabyMan doesn't mean you need to project your wishes onto the rest of us.
- positron, on 04/04/2009, -0/+3The season isn't over yet.
- Taiyoryu, on 04/04/2009, -0/+3select start
- JTMON, on 04/04/2009, -0/+3Uh, they do that on purpose. Why would you expect hard science from a show about "fringe" science?
- DrRetro, on 04/04/2009, -0/+3Only saw an episode or two, at most. To be honest, I found it largely unimpressive. Giving the article a quick look through, this Observer sounds very G-Man-ish.
Also, I like the idea of a mythology tying a show together, gives it a mysterious and intriguing bent to it, but does every show really need it? Seriously? I don't think the media can take much more of this before it gets so-2005. - IgorUnchained, on 04/03/2009, -2/+4John From Cincinnati was another show that had quite a bit of this (although it only lasted one season on HBO).
I love it when studios stand behind their products like this...offering additional content for their fanbase. I am not
a Fringe or Lost fan, but I know some people who are addicted to both/either and they enjoy the "what if" games and
hidden stuff as much as actually watching the show.
I think other studios should follow suit and invest the time and resources to do this kind of thing. At the very least, there should be more shows made that have the capacity for mind games. - conundrum, on 04/04/2009, -0/+2After pouring over all of the cryptographic images and running them through an advanced adaptive algorithm for a month I've finally broken the code! It reads "drink more Ovaltine".
- JTMON, on 04/04/2009, -0/+2Yeah, they explain that in the article you didn't read.
- whimmel, on 04/04/2009, -0/+1I think a bigger mystery would be to discover why I read all 3 pages and most of the comments on that article before coming back to digg to write this.
- antdude, on 04/04/2009, -0/+1Same here. I saw the first two episodes and wasn't impressed. I will stick with X-Files.
- VitriolAndAngst, on 04/06/2009, -0/+1ON this code thing, I flashed to a visual of a 6-sided dice -- and then a Rubics Cube. The yellow dots correspond to which part of the face something is on.
I got the feeling that the grid patterns seen are part of the same thing.
The first cypher is the green, green, green, red pattern.
It may not be a phrase, but a combination to unlock something later in the series -- like the coded sequence on Lost. Which I got the feeling that it was some progression of the island -- how it was going to move through time (over time).
Or, if this is anything like the rest of the show -- it's just random junk they will attach whatever meaning fits to it later. - fasda, on 04/03/2009, -2/+3I figure the code has to be based on numbers (probably the golden ratio) not letters. I was thinking something based on octals until I looked up the glyphs on the fringe wiki and found out there's a 9th out now.
- jcaino, on 04/06/2009, -0/+1Maybe I should have clarified - every episode that's been aired as of yet. Looking forward to the next episode - especially having gone back and watched all the aired episodes. Looking forward to tomorrow.
- protogenxl, on 04/06/2009, -0/+1I think Master Billy Quizboy said it beast when he said.
SLIDE!
http://www.adultswim.com/shows/venturebros/extras/ ... - jedinate, on 04/04/2009, -0/+1Too bad all that stuff mentioned in the article is more interesting than the actual show. I watch it and enjoy it to a certain degree, but it is nowhere near the Lost category.
- 1o1q1, on 04/06/2009, -0/+1its so clear
the glyphs are telling the truth about the pattern
duh
j/k but maybe not - VitriolAndAngst, on 04/06/2009, -0/+1This is a valid point. Why have a show with an FBI investigator at all if it's all "gut feeling" or fake science? There is no fun in figuring out anything, or a sense of the creepy that "this could happen."
Suspension of Disbelief makes sense if you are trying to push a compelling emotional or spiritual truth. But if you are pushing a sci-fi / detective show, then you've broken too many rules.
Having at least a consistent treatment of that suspension of disbelief is why I think that LOST is a better show than Fringe. The ONE suspension of disbelief is the Island is aware and can time travel -- then everything about people's responses and schemes relating to this are consistent -- not random. I love all kinds of sci-fi and I even loved Xena, Warrior Princess.
But Fringe is tedious to me -- there is no pay off and they lost me for too much nonsense and depression. At least with the X-Files there was some story at play that made sense. - arwild01, on 04/07/2009, -0/+0The Code has been cracked! Digg it: http://digg.com/television/Ars_Cracks_TV_Fringe_Co ...
- JoeQuixote, on 04/03/2009, -3/+2lol. dugg for konami
- jshhmr, on 04/04/2009, -3/+2Wow Fringe is such a ***** show. ***** Pacey? Seriously?
- chaosatom, on 04/04/2009, -4/+2These comments suck.
- jcsoc, on 04/03/2009, -6/+3Fringe is a ripoff of the X-Files
- hydroplane, on 04/03/2009, -14/+9JJ has built a career on cheap gimmicks and ripoffs. I feel sorry for anyone who has wasted their time watching Lost and still thinks there will be some kind of payoff at the end.
