- scooterbaga, on 10/12/2007, -5/+86I loved and miss Tough Crowd. Cheers to Lewis Black. He should've had his own show 5 years ago.
- TiMMY8765, on 10/12/2007, -1/+76please, let it replace mind of mencia...
- clownguyx, on 10/12/2007, -6/+70The article states it sounds similar to Tough Crowd. I always thought the premise of that show was a good one, but I hate Colin Quinn. I think Lewis Black has more appeal to the mainstream. I always felt like I didn't appreciate Quinn since I wasn't from New York.
- quaunaut, on 10/12/2007, -4/+42I enjoyed Tough Crowd myself. But Lewis Black's exaggerated honesty is gonna make this one gold.
- R34C7, on 10/12/2007, -1/+38We can only hope that this show is a gleaming success and becomes the replacement for Mind of Mencia.
- sctechguy, on 10/12/2007, -5/+41"If it weren't for my horse...."
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+33I'd hate white people too if I were Kunta Kinte.
- ringo380, on 10/12/2007, -1/+27I liked the fact that Tough Crowd encouraged the audience to respond however they wanted to a joke. There was no "APPLAUSE" or "LAUGH" sign that lights up and tells them when to laugh hysterically. If they didn't like a joke, you'd hear nothing but the air conditioner in the studio. If they did, the comedians would get an honest laugh.
I think there are a lot of people out there that feed off of the audience's response in a television show, in deciding whether they should laugh or not. Kind of a shame that giving the viewer the chance to form their own opinion is bad for ratings. - davewashere, on 10/12/2007, -3/+28Tough Crowd was a great idea, but with the wrong people. Let's hope Lewis Black's comedy friends are funnier than Colin Quinn's.
- glasnostic, on 10/12/2007, -2/+26Is it just me, or did the Daily Show replace SNL as Hollywood’s comedy recruiting pool? And was the baton handed over during Anchorman?
- mikeneilson, on 10/12/2007, -10/+29Should I submit the "BREAKING: Lewis Black's Comedy Central Show has been canceled" story to Digg now or later?
Don't get me wrong, I like his comedy, but he can be real hit and miss. I remember watching him on the Daily Show and the nights he didn't prepare were just disastrous. I wish him well, but I can't see this lasting.
Case and point: Adam Carolla (literally a millionaire) is a comedic genius, and his show on Comedy Central tanked. - chicken101, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19Popularity != talent
- SxualVnilla, on 10/12/2007, -4/+19Well it can't be as bad as the Adam Carolla talk show.
- tdogg241, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13phynodedotnet: You're confusing success with talent. Fact of the matter is Mencia is a hack with 2 jokes: imitating the mentally handicapped and selling out his not-so-fellow Latinos (which really just means he's being a bigot...Michael Richards was crucified for doing it once, yet this clown gets away with it every week on his show). The fact that he was in one of your precious Superbowl beer commercials is moot. If you think that making money means you have talent, I need only to point you to MTV.
- fizztpok, on 10/12/2007, -5/+17@kevin45
No, he's not deaf. He works for Starbucks. ;-) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+15Are you deaf?
- insinuate, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10right, like it was way too New York for the rest of the country. They had too many people on there like Nick Dipaulo.
- eleventybillion, on 10/12/2007, -7/+16@timmy8765
amen to that
Carlos Mencia is a racist, sellout punk. Do a search on break.com of Joe Rogan calling him out at one of his standup shows. - raynar, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11That sucks. He should be on HBO instead. Now he'll just be censored and not as funny, while plugging other comedians.
- blackjack75, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9They did. The only difference is that they are actually funny.
- inurb, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12Quinn was annoying as hell and he can't talk right. He's got a mushmouth. Lewis Black's show should be gold!
- Hypermarkalan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I always thought that Giraldo was funnier on TC than his was in his own standup. He's really quick and witty, but for some reason his standup lacks that. Hopefully he'll be interesting in a discussion type setting.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Yeah, I think Steve-O's appearence was the last straw for that show. Personally, I've never found Adam Carolla particularly funny.
- Samsara, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8*****
- therodersabides, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Damn you! I just got that out of my head last week.
- ringo380, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Giraldo really is a mediocre comedian. I get the feeling that he does a lot behind the scenes, and that he's probably popular within the inner comedian circles, but that's pretty much where he should stay. You're right, I don't think I've ever heard anyone proclaim that they are a huge fan of Greg Giraldo, and I really don't see how you could.
His delivery is unoriginal, his jokes are tired, his style is average, there's just nothing to draw you in. - unlucky7s, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Lewis Black is definitely one of the best topical comedians around. Just one issue. One Lewis Black's strong points is the F bomb. It will be difficult to get around him dropping it, and the ability to bleep out his many profanities will definitely make him lose some of his umf. Can't wait to see the show though. Time for someone to replace that Carlos MenStealia show.
- nathanwalker, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Certainly exemplifies the diversity of the word, doesn't it?
- spydirweb, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7I agree with the others, sounds like another Tough Crowd. I don't think Tough Crowd failed because of Colin Quinn, it was the clash of all the comedians. They just didn't fit well. It's fine having different people from different backgrounds with different comedy styles, but not that much. There should be SOME common ground between the comedians because the same demographic reached (which the Tough Crowd guys didn't even have).
The problem is Greg Giraldo. He's such a mediocre comedian. Patton Oswalt's a great choice, Tompkins is good, but Giraldo... seriously, who can say they're a HUGE fan of his? You either don't like him or you put up with him waiting on a comedian you do like. - mrch0mp3rs, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I predict:
"The Root of All Evil" = spoof on The McLaughlin Group
Just like Colbert Report = spoof on O'Reilly Factor.
Picture it... Lewis Black sitting at the head of a roundtable discussion dropping the F-bomb where McLaughlin would shout "WRONG". Fill the roundtable with some decent topical comedy talent, and you now have THREE news parodies that deliver more truthiness than CNN (which, as of late, isn't that hard). - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6In my opinion, I do not know about the whole mencia controversy, or whatever is going on. I have watched his show about twice. It is not funny in any shape or form. Seriously, the dude really sucks at making things funny. My little sister is better at making me laugh, besides both shows carried the exact same content, something about "beaners" or whatever. It really isn't funny.
- emil1212, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I dunno about you, but I get offended by the word, "beaner," which he tosses around like a damn frisbee, and I'm not even Mexican! (I'm Dominican)
Wait.. He's not even mexican!!! - mrferg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Finally
- braeken, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I have high hopes. Love his bits on the daily show. Even went to see him live. Don't screw it up Black ;)
- nathanwalker, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5@raynar
True, but on HBO it will get dropped just as fast. HBO viewers tend to not watch HBO for the comedy from what I've seen... I mean, look at what happened with "Luck Louie"... now that was a great show, but they dropped it after the first season. - aranyx, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5oops, wrong reply. digg me down
- danconia, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7Great... now we have to listen to Lewis Black scream and yell for even longer. This guy isn't even funny. Yeah Digg me down, I like it in a sort of masochistic sort of way.
I like it when you Digg me down, makes me feel naughty. - amoirae, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3How can phynodedotnet type with Mencia's dick in their mouth? The mind boggles.
- CapeKid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It was all about Patrice O'Neal and Jim Norton on that show.
Side note: just looked up tough crowd on imdb. Apparently Stephen Colbert did some episodes. - humperdeath, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4@fizztpok: A starbucks in Atlanta.
Anyway, this sounds great, I hope there is enough material for a few seasons. Mencia's show was great the first year, but then started to dry up. No wonder he had to mooch of other comics. Lewis Black is quite unique, I love his stuff, but not everyone gets it. - Forever-Zero, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Lewis Black is an amazing comic, one of my personal favorites, but I can't see his humor being funny every single day for 30 minutes.
If he manages to pull it off, it will be hysterical. - insinuate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I remember a few months back Lewis talking about on a radio show (maybe Oppie and Anthony) how they were in the works of making this, and he said how "Success is becoming what you hate" and thats exactly what he is doing. I have loved Lewis Black since the first time I heard him, and can't wait to be able to see him once a week or however often this show will be!
- chaimpot0k, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I just saw him live last week here at UF, ***** phenomenal. Funny as all hell and smarter than any of the ***** you see on TV
- hypes, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I was just gonna say this sounds like "Tough Crowd".... wonder if any of the comedians from the ole' TC show will show up on Lewis's show.
- justncase80, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7No Colin Quinn is just not funny in the slightest.
- heffae, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3PI used to be a really good show when it was originally on Comedy Central. When it moved to the major networks I think the censors got to involved and it stopped being so incorrect.
- heffae, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Quin is someone who would make a good writer (and I think that's how he got his start on SNL) what he says is funny but they his delivery and timing seam to screw up the joke.
- krakkinem, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Lewis Black rules, I can't wait to see this. He's way funnier and smarter than Colin Quinn, and I like my comedians to be just a little insane.
Insane is the new sane! - nitrojunky24, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2soon comedy central will need a separate channel comedy central news scary thought
- mdollarsign, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5He is lacking something called being funny.
