- floridiot2, on 10/10/2008, -7/+991Maybe they should ask if Spielberg and Lucas went too far with Indiana Jones.
- vango, on 10/10/2008, -9/+662bout time South Park did something offensive.
- bixby1, on 10/10/2008, -3/+474Matt and Trey gave and interview to Rolling Stone two years ago in which they discussed going to a Hollywood Party and literally farting on celebrities. 'You should have seen the look on Dick Dreyfuss' face.'
The degree to which those two don't give a ***** is not measurable by human instruments. I love them for that. - whoreable, on 10/10/2008, -6/+381If we can't laugh at rape then the terrorists have won.
- AmyVernon, on 10/10/2008, -4/+273If Parker & Stone ever don't go too far, then South Park will cease to be funny.
I mean, a couple years ago, they had Oprah's vee-jay-jay go on a shooting rampage. - badwithcomputer, on 10/10/2008, -3/+241remember when the south park movie was nominated for an oscar and they showed up to the academy awards in dresses?

one wearing jennifer lopez's famous dress of that year. they told rolling stone that they were tripping on lsd the whole time. matt and trey > all in hollywood. - maz2331, on 10/10/2008, -2/+231No. George Carlin pointed it out that rape can be funny years ago. ("Think about Porky Pig raping Elmer Fudd...")
And, on a serious note, slamming Lucas for the way he's remaking some of the old characters is a great criticism.
Oh, let's not forget that Butters shot several people "in the dick." - inactive, on 10/10/2008, -4/+207If you don't like adult comedy, then don't watch it.
- Dumbledorito, on 10/10/2008, -9/+207What I think they don't realize (perhaps by no being in movie geekdom) is that Matt & Trey were probably playing off of the most common response to Lucas' efforts as of late: "He raped my childhood!"
I don't think they were making fun of rape per se, but were instead lampooning the destruction of treasured fictional characters. - bigfatphony19, on 10/10/2008, -4/+199Making fun of rape is acceptable.
But you DON'T shoot a guy in the DICK. - inactive, on 10/10/2008, -6/+177Laughing at rape is best when clowns are involved.
- Omek, on 10/10/2008, -14/+178I thought it was genius. I was ROTFLMAO. Squeal piggy, squeal!
- dafragsta, on 10/10/2008, -1/+152"Qualifications?"
"Rape, murder, arson, and rape."
"You said rape twice."
"I like rape."

- StuartGibson, on 06/14/2009, -1/+133Dude, shooting people in the dick is not cool.
- dsmx, on 10/10/2008, -1/+113Or why after numerous rewrites the best script the could come up with had aliens and a refrigerator that survives a nuclear explosion.
- LilRabbitFooFoo, on 10/10/2008, -3/+112Um, duh?
- BXRWXR, on 10/10/2008, -4/+106Rape can be funny.
Provided the lighting is good and the setting is tasteful. - bryan567, on 10/10/2008, -5/+100Of course they did! Its what they do. Trey Parker and Matt stone always take things "too far". Its one of my favorite things about the show.
- Protoss, on 10/10/2008, -4/+95"vee-jay-jay" has to be the worst slang for a vagina ever.
- TedTschopp, on 10/10/2008, -1/+86I agree, the LA times misses the point. While I didn't see SP episode in question, I get the drift.
Indiana Jones and Star Wars are a part of the cultural strata many of us were raised in. Its not just a property of George or Steve's. Its in our heads, its in our minds, its a part of our cultural identity. When GL and SS made Indy do things which were out of step of the way our cultural icons were established, they were not just messing with their own creation. They were messing with our identity, mind, and being as members of a culture. That is very, very close to rape.
The sad point is that this idea will be misunderstood by most of Hollywood and it now looks like that mindset has also infected the LA Times. Perhaps I should put this on the LA times page. Who am I kidding they won't get it. - peaceninja, on 10/10/2008, -3/+81thanks for sharing that, i respect them so much more than i did before
- jemka, on 10/10/2008, -6/+82There's no such thing as "too far" in comedy.
- DekarCorvus, on 10/10/2008, -7/+79Censorship is one of the biggest forms of cultural rape out there. if you can't allow yourself to see what is actually going on in the world, even if its uncomfortible situations, then your dooming your own people. you need to understand and confront these terrible situations if you expect to deal with them. turning a blind eye and looking the otherway is ignorant.
you may try to argue that this goes beyond that, because they are making a mockery of rape. which is a serious crime. i'll agree to it being serious. but they have actually done good work! we are all now talking about rape, and how its a terrible thing. it got us thinking, it got us to take a closer look at ourselves. and for that we should be thanking Matt Stone and Trey Parker. you don't have to agree with them, or all there humor. but commend them for getting people thinking about the issues.
get off your high horse and see what good actually comes from these situations. - homer4199, on 10/10/2008, -2/+64The storm trooper part was the best. rofl
- ryansmith18, on 10/10/2008, -2/+60I know it's just your opinion, but I want you to know that your opinion sucks ass, and that's a fact.
- inactive, on 10/10/2008, -1/+57There's nothing funny about rape. But when you put a clown in there...
- Urbanninja622, on 10/10/2008, -1/+55The Deliverance scene made me the most uncomfortable I have ever been watching South Park, and it was still way better than Crystal Skull.
- LilRabbitFooFoo, on 10/10/2008, -13/+66As someone who has personally worked with both of these men, I found this really disturbing and then I laughed my ass off. 8D
And yes, I hated Indy IV... - ScottoGato, on 10/10/2008, -1/+51nu-cu-lur
- noisician, on 10/10/2008, -2/+51you didn't tell that very well
- deepthot42, on 10/10/2008, -0/+47You can't rape an imaginary character.
- yumtummy, on 10/10/2008, -1/+47im sorry you have to live your life w/o a sense of humor
- WELLDOITLIVE, on 10/10/2008, -1/+44Mingie!
- buddamus, on 10/10/2008, -1/+44George Lucas deserved it
- mywhitenoise, on 10/10/2008, -4/+46Trey also says he has never even smoked pot in the commentaries...so I don't know if that LSD quote has much substance.
- aimhelix, on 10/10/2008, -4/+45Its not bas bad as shooting a guy in the dick! DO NOT SHOOT A GUY IN THE DICK!
- aparatoc, on 10/10/2008, -2/+40Indy IV .. raped Peruvian culture...w/ un researched scenes.. like Mexican music playing when they arrive in Peru....and seriously.. the Nasca Lines are no where close to Cusco....
- LilRabbitFooFoo, on 10/10/2008, -2/+39DELIVERANCE ftw.
- MysticSavage, on 10/10/2008, -1/+37No, they got them in their gift bags at the Emmys.
- dagnabbit, on 10/10/2008, -4/+39I personally didn't think it was a very good episode, but that doesn't mean it went too far. People can just turn the channel if they're offended by the big bad cartoon.
- bpoteat, on 10/10/2008, -4/+38"I am as big a South Park fan as anyone here..."
No, you clearly aren't. - Mr.Gone, on 10/10/2008, -1/+35At least no one was "outraged".
- DiggzDE, on 10/10/2008, -0/+33Plus, the scene where Lucas and Spielberg were actually raping a stormtrooper was a hilarious reference to the same thing they (mainly Lucas) did to the Star Wars Franchise.
- zeebo, on 10/10/2008, -0/+33Oh I agree, Aliens isn't out of line with previous Indiana Jones content at all. It was the execution that was the main failing. Other than that I think that people object to it since the two 'good' Indiana Jones movies play off of Judeo-Christian mythology which is more acceptable to people in general, while the modern UFO mythos isn't quite as deeply ingrained in our culture.
Not to mention that the Arc and the Grail were cool, partly because they weren't constantly relied upon as plot devices to get through problems early in the movie. The Crystal Skull had way too much use made of it. From its mysterious magnetism, to its mind-warping effects, they played it up constantly, and thus it made far less of an impact than the previous movies where the supernatural artifacts were quite subdued.
Indiana Jones has always been similar to the old serials, and its always been a little absurdist, but it took it seriously (which the old serials hadn't) and that made it cool. This movie was a self parody, and so it failed. If they ever make another Indiana Jones movie they need to return to its serious dark roots, and it needs to be built off another real mythos, rather than some modern crap. Something like Cthulhu! - lukerat88, on 10/10/2008, -2/+35the expert opinions of the key grip, ladies and gentlemen.
now if you'll excuse me, Stevey and I are gonna go get a chai before we catch up with George for the tee-off time - inigomntoya, on 10/10/2008, -5/+38C'mon! It was a LEAD LINED refrigerator.
You know, that same stuff that keeps the evil radiation from melting you skin at the dentists office?
/s - shutaro, on 10/10/2008, -2/+34Too far, or not far enough?
- rocketship47, on 10/10/2008, -7/+39I guess i hadn't seen the episode, so reading this article wasn't a complete waste of time for me. As a warning to others though, this article merely summarizes the episode and adds in a few comments from reviews from other famous sites. Not really any original content at all except the question posed in the Digg summary.
