- ZachsMind, on 04/25/2009, -3/+101When I was a kid I remember being all excited about the metric system. Cuz I'd tried the other crap and I couldn't make sense out of it. Cups Pints Quarts Gallons. I still can't remember how many of what makes a what. I usually have to go look it up to remind myself.
The metric system was easy! Everything was divisible by ten! I even drew up little characters to represent each unit of measurement. There was MilliMouse and CentiCat and DeciDog... Kilophant was my favorite! He was big!
Then somewhere between elementary school and high school I had unconsciously figured out from the behavior of my peers that the metric system was unamerican and I was going to burn in hell if I didn't stop. A foot is twelve inches even if it has ten toes. That's the way God intended it, even tho God never mentioned yards and miles in the Bible, and people still argue over what the hell is a cubit.
I miss MeterMan and his Metric Zoo, but I feared deportation to Cuba. I guess some *****'s Never Going to Happen. - mgraham80, on 04/24/2009, -2/+63They'll pry my European Unicorn Porn from my cold, dead fingers.
- DeeKaph, on 04/25/2009, -1/+57Come enjoy the metric system in your space-age neighbour to the north. We make robot arms too.
- Griff431, on 04/25/2009, -0/+41Jon Stewart has obviously never heard of Rule 34.

- waspbr, on 04/25/2009, -1/+34I keep wondering why Americans are so adamant against international law and and agreements. They keep throwing the argument about loss sovereignty when their government is the one that has breached and ignored other countries' sovereignty the most.

- Hellman109, on 04/25/2009, -1/+30I live in Australia (Metric) and we laugh at Americans and their stupid imperial system.
Everything is 10/100/1000, its dead easy.
Units of measurement shouldnt be so damn tough - O8SERVER, on 04/25/2009, -0/+25*cold, dead and sticky fingers.
- sigmaman2, on 04/25/2009, -2/+25Well, you have to look at it from their perspective. The radical right-wing also had their list of "***** that's never gonna happen"...
Home loans wrecking the economy...
Female House Speaker...
Bush causing war, torture, spying on Americans...
Black man becoming President...etc.
So from their perspective, anything can happen, since all the ***** on their "not gonna happen" list happened already. - rif42, on 04/25/2009, -1/+24@MadHarvey
"Humans rely on their sense of touch much more than they realize, and people who grow up on the imperial system get a better "feeling" for distances and volumes because the units are based on things they touch every day. If I want a rough reference for a foot, I look at my foot, an inch I look at my thumb, a cup I look at my cup."
In that case you are out of touch with reality. How many people do actually have a foot that is a foot long (30.48 cm)? People have all sorts of size of feet, just check a shoe shop (or bowling alley?). You will find that most human feet are far shorter than 30cm. This is simply not a good measurement unit.
On the other hand an inch is rather short thumb, mine is more than 35mm that is 40% more than the inch.
1 yard is 3 feet, 1 mile is *1760* yards. What a joke! It gets even worse when you realise that there never were an agreement on units like the gallon, Britain used appx. 4.5l, in US it is 3.8l. Is the oz 28.3g or is it 31.1g or is it a fluid based measurement?
Your cup, is that an espresso cup or a geek sized coffee mug/jug?
This is the 21st century. US is now in a small club with just 3 countries holding on to Imperial system, i.e. US, Liberia and Myanmar. Certainly not the club of science and reasoning.
I call on the modern and educated US people to make the change and use the international standard for measurements. - InfinitySnatch, on 04/25/2009, -0/+20This is a slippery slope. Next thing you know they'll be banning porn of dragons having sex with exhaust pipes.
- AngelBunny, on 04/25/2009, -1/+19i compare USA to sparta but then people always give me ***** about it.

I'm not sure what's worse. This is just one step away from "Fluoridation of drinking water is a Communist plot to contaminate our precious bodily fluids!"
Again you wonder.. is the GOP _actively_ trying to destroy itself? - inactive, on 04/24/2009, -4/+17It was just jon making a weird analogy with unicorn porn...but knowing Bachmann that the kind of crazy ***** she would say.
- JigoroKano, on 04/25/2009, -1/+13I've made it a point throughout my life to not learn the pound/foot/slug units.
I've also committed to unremembering how to write cursive and how to read analog clocks.
Doing pretty well with the cursive. - q1006662, on 04/25/2009, -0/+12Now that is really something that cannot be unseen. But thank you for broadening my horizons.
- darthjure, on 04/25/2009, -1/+13Stewart is funny, but he really makes an excellent point. Politicians and diggers get so upset about things that are never going to happen. There were stories on the front page of digg last fall that said President Bush was going to institute martial law. We also hear that Obama wants the government to completely take over the banking system or that he's going to ban all guns. It would be upsetting if it were remotely true... but it's never going to happen!
- q1006662, on 04/25/2009, -1/+11That's a beautiful story.

- inactive, on 04/25/2009, -0/+5I always find that interesting - especially in politics, the hysterics often have absolutely nothing to do with the reality of the situation. Ultimately, I guess it's to make up for the fact that if we just talked about what really goes on, politics is incredibly boring.
- Auntmac, on 04/25/2009, -0/+5Yeah, but could you really see Sammy Hagar singing 'I, can't, drive, 88.51!!'

- ftc08, on 04/25/2009, -0/+3Someone should send her arsenic with the same justification.
- miggyb, on 04/25/2009, -0/+3@MadHarvey: Your argument is retarded. There is nothing stopping you from saying "well, my armspan is about a meter, and he looks to be about 2 armspans high, so he must be about two meters tall." Just because they don't call the meter an "arm," it doesn't mean you can't find other things relatively equal to it. The length from the floor to a doorknob has commonly been cited as a reference length for a meter.
Also, the hell is a gallon, then? The amount of fluid that can fit in a milk jug? What about saying "Okay, a liter is about half a coke bottle, or two water bottles." As Americans, we probably have a better "feel" for liters than for gallons, and don't you deny it. - Banda7, on 04/25/2009, -0/+3I feel so proud to live in Bachmans district.....
- ghostoftomjoad, on 04/25/2009, -0/+3why did i read all that. whoever made that needs many yrs of therapy
- CCB0x45, on 04/25/2009, -0/+3Is there any currency out there that has stayed consistent to its 1913 counterpart? Give me a break.
- Schwa142, on 04/25/2009, -0/+3People in America (where I am) still think a yard actually equals a meter... :(
- cards, on 04/25/2009, -0/+2Am I the only one who can't get the full-screen button to work on Comedy Central videos? I click it and nothing happens. Adblock disabled, Greasemonkey disabled...still no luck.
