- inactive, on 03/11/2008, -2/+56Been on hulu for a while quality is not bad will be interesting to see how it handles the extra traffic.
- carbon12, on 03/11/2008, -5/+46Hulu homepage:
"Hulu opens to the public on March 12th!
(Currently limited to users in the U.S.)"
COME ON!
/Canadian "Arrested Development" fan who wants to use Hulu :( - airiox, on 03/11/2008, -12/+52Stop worshiping the Queen and we'll give you access. Until then you can gloat about your Canadian dollar, free health care and pretty women.
- Wogger, on 03/11/2008, -2/+33Which is probably one reason it won't ultimately be successful. I live in the UK, and me and my friends download all our favourite American shows via BitTorrent, like the rest of the world.
- Badam89, on 03/11/2008, -7/+35I have tried hulu.com and its great. I don't watch tv anymore so I use hulu to watch shows. It has great content but it would be better if it had ABC shows.
- djepik, on 03/11/2008, -2/+30PEOPLE IN CANADA WATCH TV TOO. *****
- drjekelmrhyde, on 03/11/2008, -3/+29Hulu ? you mean the site that diggers claimed they hated when it first came out
- slashbot, on 03/11/2008, -1/+23I'll put up with 30-second ads to support this business model.
- fritzbrown, on 03/11/2008, -2/+21Show us yours and we'll show you ours. Until then, see ya on BT.
- phantom_mullet, on 03/11/2008, -3/+21It's Official: The Pirate Bay has been open since November 2003!
- Kajico, on 03/11/2008, -1/+15I get tired of these posts about only the U.S. getting access to streams. Not that I agree with those regulations, but come on, the U.S. isn't the only one restricting access. The only way I can watch UK shows is by downloading them through bittorrent too. I remember when The IT Crowd aired and Channel 4 had them online, they were only accessible to UK residents only.
So it's not only you UK guys that suffer, we suffer too when we want to watch shows from outside our country. - davidwasman, on 03/11/2008, -1/+14abc.com has widescreen format streams for their better shows.
- Nylon20, on 03/11/2008, -1/+12That was almost as clever as your name
- Skyview, on 03/11/2008, -4/+15what type of junk is this ?
All videos go "this content is not available in your region"
Have fun with your regional internet video services ! - BingoPower, on 03/11/2008, -0/+11A catch? Come on... I'd rather have 30 second ad's than 5 minutes of repetitive ***** on Cable....
- sint4x, on 03/11/2008, -0/+11It would be great if us Canadians did not have to use proxies to watch the shows.
- timusca, on 03/11/2008, -1/+11I was just watching Heroes last night and got through all 5 episodes of Season 2... not a single commercial loaded during those 5 episodes and this isn't the first time it has happened to me. Not that I'm complaining, but I'm really surprised it's coming out of beta.
- Scottievm, on 03/11/2008, -0/+9It's backed by the networks.
- airiox, on 03/11/2008, -1/+10Exactly, ABC's streaming technology is also better. It's amazing how they cram Lost HD to work on such a low bandwidth connection.
Hulu is still great though. But there is no reason for ABC to share revenue with something they didn't start when they have done an excellent job themselves making their premiere content readily available through their own website. I can't say the same about the other networks. - racco, on 03/11/2008, -4/+13US only! bummer.
torrents are better anyway - inactive, on 03/11/2008, -1/+9I've been a member for months. This service has effectively killed my DVR
- ploke, on 03/11/2008, -1/+8everyone is SO surpirsed because limiting access to website based on the country of origin is a weird thing to do online. you know, that whole GLOBAL network thing...
- SadMartigan, on 11/25/2008, -0/+7tried it, failed on hulu, nbc, abc
- Octaman, on 03/11/2008, -0/+7The stupid thing is they never mentioned it was US only when i got the private beta a couple of months ago.
- psevium, on 03/11/2008, -0/+6I'm in Australia (so I get basically nothing). I'm still aware that other countries restrict from America as well, I just think regional coding as a concept overall is retarded, especially in this day and age. Especially things like DVDs (I can't take my Futurama DVDs to USA and watch them there without another player (or bringing mine)).
- Alestro, on 03/11/2008, -9/+15***** THE RIAA!
- airiox, on 03/11/2008, -2/+8It's all you ever watch or talk about. There is never a CNBC clip on the front page, just incessant fox news, montel pwns fox news, blogger pwns fox news, fox news likes men, fox news in bikinis, fox news karl rove. We love to be indoctrinated by raw story, alternet, c&l, the huffington post and any other 'news' organization with an agenda.
- dfeifer, on 03/11/2008, -0/+6This after I tried openhulu.com for the first time last night.
I am just waiting for a site to exist that has every show that has ever been created available to watch on demand. - rufo, on 03/11/2008, -2/+8I thought so too, but they've actually done a really good job building the service. They have content from many networks (not just NBC), and not just new shows, but a lot of older back-catalog stuff and even a few movies. It's clean, simple and easy to navigate. The website is fast and responsive. The video quality is well above average for Flash video on the web. It certainly isn't a YouTube killer, but for a fast easy way to show my friends a clip from a show it's great.
- Mardi, on 03/11/2008, -0/+6Yes.
- IEatHamburgers, on 03/11/2008, -0/+5Question from an American: why can't CTV/CBC/Global just do it on their own sites like ABC/NBC/FOX/others do on their own sites? If they bought the rights to show American TV on Canadian airwaves, why can't they do it on Canadian websites?
- MrViklund, on 03/11/2008, -0/+5Haaa. I have heard so much about Hulu over the past months I thought they were already in action a long time ago. Now I see I was wrong.
Anyway. What will happen is that when Hulu opens, allot of people will go there to check it out. The traffic will be massive and the Movie studios will report that Hulu is the biggest success ever. Media will get all excited and allot of articles will be written about YouTubes forthcoming death blablabla. But after a while, things will go back to normal. - digg0t, on 03/11/2008, -0/+5openhulu still doesn't work for people outside of the US
- duckonquack, on 03/11/2008, -0/+5I have had a account for months, but since I am Canadian I can't watch anything. >:(
- zydeco, on 03/11/2008, -0/+5I'm more interested to see if the back catalog of shows will be updated. I've been on Hulu beta for a few months now and the inventory of shows has been changing constantly, mostly for the worse. Some shows have all episodes online (yay Arrested Development), while others are a smattering of unorganized clips that are useless (Law and Order, Saturday Night Live). Some shows have one random episode online. There were even a few movies here for some reason, like The Blues Brothers, but now they're offline.
- viserov, on 03/11/2008, -0/+4Unless I'm missing something, Hulu is missing quite a few Arrested Development episodes...
- mmm_linux, on 03/11/2008, -0/+4Its because you have ABP.
- Adrianne, on 03/11/2008, -1/+5Are there any proxies for Americans to view shows on the BBC websites?
I probably watch more BBC programing than American and I hate it when I get rejected for being in the wrong country. - Daiken, on 03/11/2008, -0/+4Sigh Canadians get screwed again. I don't really understand why either. A lot of the ads would work in Canada since we get most of the same products. We also already get a lot of the American stations on cable. Not to mention a lot of videos uploaded online nowadays are being recorded from Canadian sources, so that should give some hint as to why we need alternatives too.
- protonone, on 03/11/2008, -0/+4Hulu could be good, but as of now, it is still like wading through muck. It's hard to search for just the right episode, the quality is about on par with a youtube video, and they are incredibly slow to add back catalog. I personally don't want to see new stuff that I can watch on tv right now, but would rather catch up on shows that I might have missed their first season through. Torrents and iTunes still are far superior.
- cramd, on 03/11/2008, -1/+5" Watch your favorites. Anytime. Anywhere." unless you are not in the US. It seems that beeing outside of the US equals not being anywhere. Giddy up.
- exaakax, on 03/11/2008, -0/+3Good news, let's see how hacked they are going to get now.
- Shorties, on 03/11/2008, -0/+3Along with HD streaming for many of their more recent releases.
- jax1492, on 03/11/2008, -0/+3Its open to the public march 12th?
- Arcum, on 03/11/2008, -1/+4American products made in China sold in stores that are likely also in Canada.
- alecks, on 03/11/2008, -0/+3I third this, i've been constantly impressed with ABC.com's streaming service. They really got it right
- zydeco, on 03/11/2008, -0/+3Meh, you're right. Only Ep 1-5 of seasons 2 and 3. Another flaky Hulu feature.
- sgtpppr, on 03/11/2008, -0/+3...the ebb and flow of digg favor. I think people started to realize that propping up youtube like it's the messiah isn't doing anything to improve online video streaming. At least the competition will force Google to actually put development money into youtube.
- oddstar, on 03/11/2008, -0/+2Great! I don't use it a lot, but it does serve a niche...I introduced it to several people and they loved it. (They don't use BT) This should stay free if they want it to actually succeed!
