- notorious., on 10/11/2007, -1/+15I'm glad someone got the reference, because it seems CNN didn't get it either.
- ohmar, on 10/11/2007, -5/+19Does anybody else recognise the quote from "Network"?
- AndrewDB, on 01/10/2008, -10/+22So long Mr. Washington, I know they'll find someone to better to replace you anyway.
- endustry, on 10/11/2007, -6/+18An African-American held to the same standard of political correctness as everyone else? OMG!
- calgone, on 10/11/2007, -7/+19My girlfrie....haha whoops almost walked right into that one!
- DarkJu17, on 10/11/2007, -1/+12Obviously the Network is not a fan of him.
- Urusai, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7People should say what they think. It makes it easier to identify the idiots.
- Ishywoo, on 10/11/2007, -3/+10I don't think he was fired for the gay thing..For all my fellow black Diggers, we already knew this guy was a A-hole from stuff he did back in the day. He comes off as arrogant and mean, and probably thought that he had "arrived" since he was on one of the top shows.
- xenovis, on 10/11/2007, -4/+11Someone either needs to update a list of words we can't say anymore, or turn the sensitivity down a few hundred notches.
- generic230, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5I work in the business, and I think the idea that he may have been an a**hole or difficult holds water, I have also heard this. I don't believe he would be fired solely for the gay thing, he did so much work to mend that, but his general inciting behavior at work may have been the straw that broke the camel's back. If he was arrogant or difficult or disrespectful, in order to protect the other actors, the showrunner would have no qualms about getting rid of him.

When someone uses the word "*****" in an argument, they likely mean it to be offensive.
So, whoever felt offended by it, they got the same perceived meaning as Isaiah meant. And this is what he gets.
I agree with your point fully, though. It just doesn't apply here. - SquigglyP, on 10/11/2007, -5/+9I think too many people place too much stock on the fact that the way they view a word, or percieve it's meaning is the same as everyone else's. Some people simply don't have a problem with the word 'fag' or 'dyke' or '*****' or '*****' or '*****' or 'spic' or any other taboo word. Some people are going to be upset by those words. Some people won't. Personally, they don't bother me. I don't use them, (well ok, i use '*****' and '*****' a LOT) but i don't give a ***** when someone else says them either. Why would I? It's a ***** word. If you use a word that sounds a little like those words you can get in trouble. If you're a smoker from the UK and you come here, then may god have mercy on your soul for all the 'fags' you'll offend. If people in this country are so offended by the simple utterance of a word, EVEN when that word isn't being use as derogatory, then how the ***** do we ever expect to get out of racism. One presumes that to teach kids about bigotry and why it's wrong we'd have to inform them of the meanings and histories of those words.
Dude from Brazil a while ago drew a picture of this funny little naitive-type guy. called him "Little Negrito". The place ***** erupted with all this racist *****. But that's not a derogatory term there, it's just what they call naitives (at least that's what he said :P ). Even after he informed people of that, they still demanded it be taken down because "It might offend someone". Well ***** that. That is the type of thing this over-sensitivity to WORDS will lead to. Eventually, people will be willing to allow censorship and removing of inflamatory material simply because there's an off chance that it might hurt someone's feelings somewhere. That type of ***** is happening already, and this only helps it. We will never be able to be comfortable as a multicultural society until we can ***** relax around each other and not worry about something said innocently being construed as racist. They are words, and it doesn't matter what the words mean to other people, only what they mean to you.
To look at it another way... '*****' is a derogatory word for feces. Forcing people to use the word "feces" isn't going to make them suddenly change their feelings about how they percieve *****. The same holds true with these words. It's not the words that we need to target, it's the mindset.
/* note, i am not comparing minorities or gays to '*****' and if that's the message you got out of this, then you're a ***** idiot */ - sogracefully, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4or people need to stop marginalizing other groups of people for the reasons they may differ from wealthy, hetero, WASP males, maybe?
- TyphoidTimmy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Bets on when the race card will be played?

You are free to say whatever you like. However, you should be willing to live with consequences. - sogracefully, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3we just didn't feel a need to call a meeting over it.
- scroobyrooberoo, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Yep, you're right. There's a reason why too.
Consider that the real Black Caucus still supports Rep. Jefferson from LA. That doesn't do a lot for your credibility, but that's just one ex. - Ishywoo, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4@finalblue
I hate to say it but it's true..I can call someone a ni@@a and people will think it's funny and move on..Since I have a lot of gay friends, and I myself am a bi-sexual woman..I can say fag all day long...It's not right and it should be the same across the board..If one can't say, then none can say..I think it depends on the way you use those words..I have heard white people call black folks ***** and gay people fags..and it was not meant as a laugh, it was meant to hurt..But I also have a white friend that told me ***** please and I died laughing because she knew I was lying about something..I say, keep stuff private and we won't have to worry about what is politically correct. - devila2208, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2It's not. That's why it's in the Entertainment > Television section.
- LuciusVorenus77, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3"grow up"???
WTF - if I pulled his ***** at my workplace I'D BE FIRED!!
It's YOU that needs to grow up. His behaviour was UNPROFESSIONAL on the set and then he LIED about what happened. In the real world people don't get away with crap like that and neither should Washington. - xTRUMANx, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Tottaly. That's how it is at my workplace. Just as long as those you punch and call ***** aren't in reality homosexual.
- rebrad, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3I agree, the show has really gone down hill anyway. I was hoping with the season fianally that they would get rid of the whole crew and bring in some new more interesting characters. Looks like the show is on it's rapid slide to cancellation. But then again, who cares.
- betterth, on 10/11/2007, -8/+10What a shame I liked his character and ending his role as abruptly as they did will be retarded.
- finalblue, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2HA! ...and the original Daily Show skit: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_FjUzOxhCY8
- SquigglyP, on 10/11/2007, -5/+7I don't get why people get so ***** bent over something as stupid as this, Mel Gibson's drunken tirade, or any other time someone has called someone a bad name. Get over it, it's not the end of the ***** world. You don't like the guy or his opinion, don't watch the show. Or DO watch the show and get over it.
I don't like Tim Robbins, i think his politics suck. He's a great ***** actor tho, and i know that his politics has nothing to do with his ability to act. Denzel Washington can call white people a bunch of worthless trailer trash crackers, and i wouldn't throw a big fit about it, cause he's a great actor. It just means if i ever met him i wouldn't buy him a beer or anything.
You people are ***** children. Grow up. Someone says a "naughty word" and everyone in the ***** country points and puts their hand over their mouths and says "OOOOOOOOOOOOOH!" "We're gonna tell and you're gonna lose your job cause you're a big stinky poop head" - SquigglyP, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2You are obviously unaware of the WB's existence.
Of course, that channel's line-up pretty much reinforces every negative black stereotype out there...
You should stop watching TV anyway. It's bad for you. - endustry, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2You said Caucus. Huh huh.
- lydecker, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2@muyoso
I mostly agree. The Imus thing is ridiculous, in my opinion. When did "nappy" and "ho" become black person adjectives only?
The only way I disagree is if you use a word hatefully, then your meaning is hate. I doubt black people use "*****" hatefully, and same with "*****." If my friends call me a *****, I don't get offended. If my enemies do, you bet your ass I'm angry.
Personally, I'm for getting all those offensive words out of everyone's language. But it sucks when some people find it offensive, some people think it's cool, and some people are trying to "take the word back." - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -3/+4he is as big of a dick as his character is?
- bouche, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Could have done any more or less for taking care of his verbal slur? did the judge that condemned Paris Hilton for missing a court date kick Isaiah off of Grey's Anatomy?
Holy harshness! - SquigglyP, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3So you're telling me that i can't just not like someone cause they're gay? or Black? or white?
Gee, it's almost as tho i wasn't supposed to think a certain way. Hey, maybe we should make it illegal. We could call it a 'thought crime'
It would be like a "Hate Crime" except you don't actually have to be commiting a crime. Just thinking about something that's 'wrong'
These people are actors. That's about as close to art as TV is ever gonna get. You're telling me that if i wanted to make a show or a movie that depicted something racist or that reinforced a stereotype, that what? That if you had your way it would be banned? That i'd never be able to work again? ***** you.
Yeah, you'd get fired, I'd get fired... most people would get fired from their ***** jobs cause most people in this ***** up 'free thinking' society couldn't think for themselves if their ***** lives depended on it. "OMG he said a bad thing! he must be chastized for daring to think in ways unlike the way we are accustomed to! Fear him!" Don't even bother trying to chew that through your feeble mind, you obviously don't understand a ***** thing i'm saying. You're apparently just as stupid as the other 99% of this worthless planet. Firing some who says something like that, yeah that's obvious in this society.
When you remove yourself from the flock you can see the sheep for what they are. - SquigglyP, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1i never said that.
>sigh<
My point in all of this is that the 'great big issue' in all of this isn't that this guy's a violent nutjob or psycho or whatever. The thing people are bent over is the fact that he called someone a *****.
And yes i do hate being alive in this ***** of a country, now that you mention it. I think there are 5 people in the US who can make decisions for themselves without having all of their information given to them in nice little inoffensive packets. No one goes outside into the real world anymore. People just sit around their TV or PC all day not thinking. That's the whole point i was trying to make.
I wasn't even really commenting on the fact that he got fired, i was trying to point out that he could have stabbed the guy to death and no one would have cared about anything except the word he said. Sorry, i was just really angry at the time i typed all that stuff up :P - kaiser44, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2He should have just called him a ***** sucker and let it go at that. or is that not P.C.
- EnragedGamer, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2The Velvet Mafia strikes....
- mabhatter, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I think it brought too much strife on the set... it's one thing to say something mean in public about another actor you'll never act with (like Don and Rosy). Or to say something mean to somebody at work that basically stays there. But this was against a co-worker AND public.. at an actor's convention no less, when you're supposed to have GOOD things to say about your fellow cast members when the "team" is winning an award. In a way it's a media created problem... because they'll never let the issue drop as "somebody being an ass because they had a bad day" it would make the whole workplace unbearable hearing it repeated (from everybody else, no less) 100 times a day... no work on the show would ever get done.
- sdpdt, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3Faggy.
- Darkwolf97, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1For those who don't get it, Network was an academy award winning film best known for its line "I'm mad as hell and I'm not going to take it anymore!"
- manicallday, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1@SquigglyP
Yeah I pretty much hate all t.v.. However, I really do think that this show is racist not towards blacks, but towards Asians. If the hospital is set in Seattle, I would expect to see more than one Asian doctor in a hospital. And where are the Indians? I know it's knit-picky but this is just too unbelievable to watch. When was the last time you happen to be in Seattle and not seen one Asian or Indian male? It's impossible. They're everywhere. - LuciusVorenus77, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2He tried to start a FIGHT on the set. From a report made at the time: "Washington got angry and allegedly grabbed McDreamy by the throat and shoved him a few feet. But the Daily News' source says no punches were thrown, but rather "Isaiah said some disgusting things … I think Isaiah has issues." "
As for your other points - they're so utterly bereft of anything even resembling a rational argument that I'm going to choose to ignore them cause then I'd have to admit that people like you actually exist. The issue is PROFESSIONALISM but you're making it about 'thought crimes'?? What? Trying to start a fight with a co-worker while verbally insulting another one is somehow a sign of Washington's enlightenment??
Anyway if the planet is worthless why are you hanging around? Oh wait I get it - you're posting on digg, expressing your disgust with the firing of a guy from a TV show and what a great injustice it is because that's going to improve the world? - manicallday, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2I'm black and the only reason that I even tolerated the show was because of his character. My wife, who is white, is oblivious to these subtle stereotypes and just happens to watch this show religiously. All of the other Blacks on the show are so stereotypical that I can't stand it. I especially hate the Chief Surgeons fat ass wife. It's not even realistic. Chief Surgeons, regardless of race, are usually on their second or sometimes third trophy wife. In fact, trophy wives are the only point of becoming a Chief Surgeon. Anyway, I hope that they replace his character with someone similar, there's enough fat Black people on the show. I mean there's only like four other black actors on t.v. Maybe the black guy who quit on House can come over.
I wish my racist wife would just agree to watch Scrubs instead. - LuciusVorenus77, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Morals?
You're a waste of time. - LuciusVorenus77, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3"People weren't born gay"
Yes. I was. Why would I ever 'choose' a sexuality that would subject me to persecution from dim-witted bigots?
Anyway, there's no winning this argument since, at this point in history, if you're actually proud of your homophobia you're clearly not interested in rational arguments ('rationalphobe' might be a better term). Here's something to consider. Statistically, most people that are tolerant of gay people and/or support things like gay marriage have higher levels of education. Now, unless there's a special secret anti-homophobia powder that's placed on diplomas before they're handed out we can safely deduce that there's a connection between the two.
Regardless of what you or others think, I live in a country that protects my rights so your opinion on this doesn't bother me. You can think the world is 6,000 years old or flat or spinning for Jesus for all I care.
If your heart tells you to come on digg and proclaim your intolerance with exclamation marks then you won't mind if mine tells me to imply that you're uneducated. - duniyadnd, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Just a clarification on the banning the 'N' word bit. New York never attempted to ban the 'N' word, i.e. policing people from saying it. They did however try to create a change in attitude amongst younger urban kids, especially those influenced by today's hip hop culture.
- devila2208, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Yes, morals. I actually believe that some things are wrong. It is not ok to be gay just because it hurts someone's feelings to say otherwise. It seems like most people who say they are gay just can't get a date otherwise. I mean, if you go in a gay bar you probably get hit on a lot because it's just a bunch of horny dudes. In a straight club you wouldn't get hit on because the girls aren't such desperate horndogs as the gay men are. I can't see what's so appealing about stickin it up a dude's butt anyway. Ha ha I bet this will piss a bunch of people off.
- cesco69, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Isaiah Washington's interview with Larry King in which he attempted to rationale the gay slur he used was pathetic. Not only did his story make no sense, it still didn't explain what the other F word slipped off his lips so easily, first during the original incident and for a second time on national TV at the Golden Globe awards. His story made no sense whatsoever and usually when sometime makes no sense, it's because it's not true. What he failed to get through all this was that if it's not right for Don Imus to call the Rutger's women's basketball team the derogatory phrase he used, it's not all right for Isaiah Washington to use a derogatory term for gay people, not in private and certainly not on the air. Let's hope this bigot does not get hired on another series too soon.
