In Case You Missed CBS's Recent "48 Hours" on Scientology - Here It Is

It proves that it's still nucking futs. But having scientologists speak and giving both sides of the story makes the CBS show much more reputable than all the other scientology information. Psychiatry and psychology ftw.

- FredDurks, on 10/12/2007, -4/+25Scientology - A Question of Faith
Did A Mother's Faith Contribute To Her Murder?
(CBS) Why would a 28-year-old man, described as sweet, kind and gentle, take a knife to his mother one morning in 2003 and stab her over 70 times?
Jeremy Perkins, who had been diagnosed as a paranoid schizophrenic, came to believe that his mother, Elli, was evil and out to get him. Experts say the brutal murder might never have occurred, had he received proper treatment to control his psychotic delusions. But Jeremy’s parents were devout Scientologists and their religion strongly opposes psychiatric treatment.
Did Elli Perkins' faith contribute to her death? 48 Hours correspondent Peter Van Sant explores the issue.
"I tried to slit my wrists...but I wouldn't die, so I decided to do my mom instead," Jeremy Perkins told police after the murder.
Jeremy’s chilling words describe his actions on March 13, 2003, while he was in an active psychotic state.
The Perkins family cared deeply for their son and sought treatment within the principles of their faith. A lawyer for Jeremy's father told 48 Hours that Jeremy was seen by both physicians and mental health practitioners, including a psychiatrist. But court records unsealed by 48 Hours indicate that Jeremy’s treatment was limited to mostly vitamins and other holistic healing methods. The family filled prescriptions for an anti-anxiety drug and a sleeping aid. Medical experts and a doctor who treated Jeremy after the murder dismiss these methods as ineffective for an individual with paranoid schizophrenia.
Today the Church of Scientology claims more than 10 million members worldwide. Its religious opposition to psychiatry is well-known. In June of 2005, the issue was brought to national attention when actor Tom Cruise took a very public stance on NBC’s "Today" show. "I know that psychiatry is a pseudo-science," he told Matt Lauer. "You don’t know the history of psychiatry. I do."
Van Sant examines the roots of Scientology’s opposition to psychiatry and the tragic death of a caring mother who desperately wanted to help her beloved son.

Good story -- not afraid to bluntly describe some of the church's practices. The woman who was speaking on behalf of the Scientologists was pretty nuts. Sure, mental illness doesn't exist, and any problems people have can be treated with special vitamins. What ever you say.
How can they even say that medicine can't help people with mental illness, but vitamins can? What's the difference between them anyway... They're both just chemicals.- beckerist, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Rochy all the way dude! Garbage plates and "pop."

I don't see that ever happening here in the U.S.- Lynxpro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17
Don't forget Germany. It is labeled as a cult there too. Back when Clinton was President, Cruise and Travolta tried using their star power to get Clinton to put behind-the-scenes pressure on Germany to reduce its official "persecution" of their faith. That's not a partisan statement either. Its bipartisan... some of the top people at Fox News are reportedly Scientologists. - jocknerd, on 10/12/2007, -9/+3Its a slippery slope if we label scientology as a cult. Because where would we stop? Mormons, Mennonites, Amish, Evangelicals. You could make a case that they are all cults.
- Jugalator, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Do Mormons and Amish try to make money out of their members, almost as a primary goal, instead of having a spiritual one? I think a common denominator for more "legit" religions is that they don't try to milk their members of money just for the heck of it. Sure, it costs me money to be a member of our church here, but this goes to church maintenance, funeral costs, and all that stuff. And it's not excessive costs either, along with being voluntary in many cases. Compare to Scientology where your "rank" is often directly dependent on how much you're willing to spend on them and where the spiritual goal seem to be more secondary.
- wheezl, on 10/12/2007, -7/+12Every religion is a cult. Some are just larger than others.
- MrUnderbridge, on 10/12/2007, -5/+5"Bash the French all you want, but at least they had the common sense to officially label Scientology as a cult and outright ban it."
And bash the US all you want, but at least we have the common sense to recognize one's right to religion and association, even if "common sense" tells us that the members are nutjobs. When you start giving the state the right to determine what's a cult and what's not, you're heading down a bad road.
To me, the only organization that should better check out Scientology is the IRS. - LordStandley, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"Do Mormons and Amish try to make money out of their members, almost as a primary goal, instead of having a spiritual one? Mormons pay tithing just like any other church. I do not believe they are asked for any more than that. Also does the money you give to your church go to pay any people of the church, like pastors etc. The mormons do not pay anyone in the church it all stays in the church and goes to welfare systems in place for the poor members, better churches, maintenance and of course temples. And this is of course voluntary. - littlebylittle, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Viva La France!

Those religions are based on established beliefs (variations of the same thing) and do not rely on brainwashing techniques to recruit new members. And none of those religions will abandon members whose illnesses are beyond their scope.

Cult, noun
1. a particular system of religious worship, esp. with reference to its rites and ceremonies.
-dictionary.com - MrMajeika, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I prefer from dictionary.com:
6. a religion or sect considered to be false, unorthodox, or extremist, with members often living outside of conventional society under the direction of a charismatic leader.
I'm surprised they don't elaborate on this further. There will be hundreds of them standing on one street corner waiting to herd over to another building when the sign says so... The weird part is, this goes on, 24/7 go by at noon, yep, theyre doing it, go by at 5pm, yep, theyre doing it, 4:15am, yep.. still doing it..

It's too bad that this solution to the Scientology problem doesn't scale. - QuorumCall, on 10/12/2007, -10/+3Don't bash Scientology, bash religion. Scientology's teachings are just as silly as those of other faiths, and motivated by the same lust for power and money.
- joosebuck, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0most pre-american-civilization's religions were moreso about control and not so much about money... considering peasants had none. control because the lower end of the caste systems could never read, and therefore needed an edjucated religious figure to translate and dictate the bible [or whatever written guide it may be] to them.
- valona, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7What a silly comment. I'm agnostic, but even I can see that comparing some ancient organised religions to a shower of fruitcakes is very simplistic. I don't see the Morman's proclaiming that mental illness does not exist, I don't see the Scientologists working alongside their Roman Catholic brothers in sub-saharan Africa with the poor etc. Bashing all organised religions as being the source of all evil, the centre of greed is so ***** old. If you do not believe in a religion, or even have a faith system, or cannot prove the existance (or the lack of) a higher being, then just leave it. They don't bother me, I don't bother them.
Most organised religions believe in a higher power and an after-life. This they have in common. I also don't see them proclaiming the existance of a ruling class of aliens, the ability to solve most mental problems with a basic 50's style lie-detector, the need to give 50% of your salary to the organisation and so forth. - doohickus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5what utter drivel. Buddha was a rich man, and give it all away. Jesus said it is near impossible for a rich man to get into heaven.
All great religions have nothing to do with money, lust, or power. They do, all of them, insist the only way to enlightenment is to give up everything you judge worthwhile - money, lust, greed and power, and surrender your will to the will of something larger than you.
Scientology is no different than many beliefs of the modern world, including those of many professed atheist - namely that they have the answers to solve everything.
True religion is an expression of weakness and failing, that we do not and cannot have the answers, and of surrender of our will to the unknown and unprovable greater will - and in doing so find more strength than anyone who thinks they made, or can even collectively make, their own world could ever have.
All great religions have a line that goes - this world is upside-down: what is truly good is considered bad and what is bad is judged to be good, but in reality it is the lowly, the sick, the weak and the losers who will win. I don't hear anything like that in Scientology, or any other cult.

I bet you could make just as disturbing a documentary about almost ANY religion - though it would never happen due to the power those religions hold en masse.- rysmith, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3No, you couldn't. Most problems with other religions have to do with individuals. The problem with Scientology is a collective evil - collectively it's just a horrible idea. There is A LOT of good that comes from religion as a whole. Just because a few rotten apple priests do bad things, doesn't make the Catholic Church or other organized religions evil. You may disagree with a lot of their doctrine or not believe in God at all, but they do more good (charity, support people through hard times, bring a community together, etc.) than bad.
The important thing is that we keep our eyes open for this kind of stuff. Scientology should not be able to get away with milking people of their money. It's a horrible disease and the money they steal goes toward more power to do evil.
The Mormon church, the Catholic church, Evangelicals, Baptists etc. may have means to get money from their members but the money *SHOULD* be going to furthering goodwill. It's the member's job to make sure that's the case. If it's not, then it's vital that we get the word out that it's a scam.
As we've learned over the last week (Haggard), hypocrisy will not be tolerated! - imsoclever, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I can see it now - The dark side of... Shintoism?

Navy? Type any religion name into google and "cruise" and you will find that all religions offer retreats at sea.
I really love when a Scientology story gets posted because it gives the opportunity for a handful of the same people to cut and paste the same tired posts and slap each other on the back for making a Tom Cruise joke. Well done.
Reading each others digg posts is not research. - littlebylittle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Actually, my original desire was to watch the 48 Hours story "your church" tried to stop CBS from broadcasting. I missed the original broadcast and I finally found it and watched it. I found it interesting and enlightening so I posted it to Digg. Turns out other people missed it and wanted to watch it too. That was "the research" end of it. It just confirms what I already knew, as does every other independent investigation of said topic , i.e., Rolling Stone, Time Magazine, Wiki', etc.
The jokes are just that. Jokes. They're funny. And that's all it is. If Tom Cruise doesn't want people to laugh at him, maybe he should quit acting like a buffoon every single time he plasters himself all over the World media.
Every time you Scientology shill lurkers try to wage your "War on the Internet" you just bring more and more attention to yourself.

The 48 Hours episode on Scientology is a very powerful one. This is a death that happened because of Scientology's practices. Scientology has been flooding newsgroups with spam since this aired to try and cover it up. Make sure you spread the word on it to everyone you know.
The Church of Scientology has a problem. Scientologists are told to follow
everything L. Ron Hubbard said and wrote to a tee. They can't fix this
Jeremy Perkins problem without directly going against what their
science fiction writer/prophet said. Because of this, there will be
another Perkins tragedy.
How many times does something like this have to happen before the
government steps in and shuts this cult down??

You're all just going to have to live with the fact that most people know you're a cult by any definition of the word. Need a definition of a cult? Here: http://www.factnet.org/rancho5.htm Don't want to be called a cult anymore? Stop doing what cults do.
You know what you people need? REALLY bad? A good PR firm that knows what the hell they're talking about with regard to modern times. Free advice: STOP your thug tactics! They creep everyone out. And quit abusing your flock. As long as you do that, people are going to call *****. What group of Dumb-***** let Lisa M die? How ***** stupid is that? Do you see how much crap that has brought down on you?
And what are all these other Dead people? http://www.whyaretheydead.net/ Leaving a trail of dead "church" members and dead critics (i.e., L Ron Hubbard Jr.) is unacceptable to society.
You think you're going to be able to "stamp out" negative opinion about "your religion" using 60's style mafia tactics in this day and age? Come on.
Not even the Catholic Church could pull that off, and they're 2000 years ahead of you.
Change your tactics. Put your cameras away. Re-train your thugs. Fire 98% of your lawyers. Be good to your flock. Quit telling everyone who takes your “Free Personality Test” that they are “dangerously depressed and borderline suicidal.” Ease out of practicing medicine without a license. Leave the “difficult cases” to the real MDs. All they do is cause you trouble anyway. Quit worrying about people who "talk bad" about "your religion." Tell Tom Cruise to shut the ***** up. He's an embarrassment. More and more, people will quit talking. It's SO simple ...
Don’t worry. I am thoroughly tired of talking about Scientology. I’ll still be around Digg. I just don’t plan to be any kind of anti-COS crusader. BUT, I’m giving you some pretty damn good advice here. It should make some sense to you. “Source” is all knowing. “Source,” revise Tech.
Oh and yes, I'm sure your shills have examined my other Digg posts quite thoroughly. Yes, I’m a Christian. And yes, I say “*****” sometimes. Lighten up.

The Church of Scientology (lawyers, P.I.'s and thugs) silenced the writer and director of this movie, Brett Hanover . This is also the first full lenght film that has ever been released that's critical of Scientology. All other films are tied up in the court systems by Scientology's lawyers or halted all together - laser61859, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Websense owned by scientologists?

Odd Google hit to say the least. Wonder how it got there. Looks like Scio-Racketeering to me. My Digg comment above in the link description?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chilling_Effects
“Chilling Effects is a collaboration between several law school clinics and the Electronic Frontier Foundation to protect lawful online activity from legal threats. Their website, chillingeffects.org, allows recipients of cease-and-desist notices to submit them to the site and receive information about their legal rights and responsibilities. It was created by Wendy Seltzer.
The archive was founded in late 2001 / early 2002 by Internet activists who were concerned that the unregulated, private practice of sending cease and desist letters, seemed to be increasing and was having an unstudied but potentially significant "chilling effect" on speech.
The archive got a significant boost when Google began submitting its notices in 2002. Google began to do so in response to the publicity generated when the Church of Scientology convinced Google to remove references and links to the anti-Scientology Web site Operation Clambake in April of 2002. The incident inspired a large number of vocal Internet users and groups to complain to Google, and the links to the Clambake site were restored. Google subsequently began to contribute its notices to chillingeffects.org, archiving the Scientology complaints and linking to the archive. [1]
Researchers have since 2002 begun using the ChillingEffects.org clearinghouse to study the use of cease-and-desist letters, primarily looking at DMCA 512 takedown notices, non-DMCA copyright, and trademark claims.[2]”
