Iconoclasm: The Office is Back!!!
cherryav.com — "Because I can break my own rules, I'm going to start off this commentary by talking about Arrested Development instead of The Office. If that doesn't sit well with you, well, *****' a. The day that Arrested Development was canceled, I felt like the world had ended horrifically with Biblical plagues."

- squishee, on 04/11/2008, -2/+28Television sense? Does it tingle like Spidey sense?
- zephyr42, on 04/11/2008, -4/+39Arrested Development is bar none, the best TV show of all time.
(I know what you mean but it's "since" by the way.)- Roger, on 04/11/2008, -1/+12The zero hour, Michael. It's the end of the line.
I'm the firstborn. Sick of playing second fiddle. Always third in line for everything. Tired of finishing fourth. Being the fifth wheel.

- tjmb9, on 04/11/2008, -2/+4yeah. When that music started in the episode tonight I remembered how ***** hilarious Ricky Gervais was on guitar and it made me sad.
- BurnTees, on 04/11/2008, -0/+2i just got the entire series off amazon for like $45. i can't wait to take a sick day and just watch the whole thing in one sitting.
- Moemar26, on 04/11/2008, -0/+4The first watch-through is great, the second is multitudes better.
- Chebsi, on 04/11/2008, -1/+3You need to watch Arrested Development multiple times times to catch every subtle joke they throw in! I think I'm on my fifth run and I'm still just notincing the little jokes. It's a brilliant series!
- random19, on 04/11/2008, -1/+4I've started watching Arrested Development. I've always loved The Office but the funniest show on TV is It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia.

- fr3nch13, on 04/11/2008, -1/+10I've figuratively been counting the days until The Office came back. I can't wait for tonight!
- tidu, on 04/11/2008, -0/+9Eh, they could have brought the series back with a better episode. Or at least an hour would have been nice...
- appletoapple, on 04/11/2008, -0/+2I agree an hour would have been nice, but I like the first episode. Awkward comedy is what the office does best, and it was definitely awkward!
- etnoo, on 04/11/2008, -1/+9Fook yeah!
- hollywoodphony, on 04/11/2008, -7/+29That's a pretty controversial stance, to trash the UK Office. Kudos to you, you brave fool!
- GalacticRerun, on 04/11/2008, -5/+10The guy pretty much shows himself up to be as ignorant as the people he dismisses.
Plus when you choose a photoshopped image of Lucy Davis to compare to Pam in lingerie of course there's no contest. I'd say they are on an equal level of pretty.- krofh, on 04/11/2008, -4/+2^ This guy is almost as funny as reading Maddox's hate mail. Only not really.
- Morality, on 04/11/2008, -0/+1I miss maddox. Simpler times.
- Johntp, on 04/11/2008, -8/+3I never actually saw the UK office. Personally I don't see how it could be BETTER than the US version. Maybe thats just me though.
- aristideau, on 04/11/2008, -1/+5Well you really are missing out, the UK Office is this generations faulty towers. It took me about 10 episodes to get used to the US version (I couldnt help but compare especially the first episode which is a remake of the first episode of the british one and I couldnt help but cringe when I first watched it, it just didnt compare). Do youself a favour and watch it, then again American audiences (I am generalising based on what comedies work over there) arent known for their appreciation of subtle humour. It seems they need a laugh track with set up 'boom boom' jokes, you can almost predict the punch line most of the time.
Another killer series that has been shown here in Aus is "Summer Heights High", check it out on youtube

- Roger, on 04/11/2008, -6/+20Fool indeed. The US version is pretty good, but it seems like an average sitcom compared to the original.
Gervais is far more believable as a boss than Carell and his wacky antics.- estvir, on 04/11/2008, -2/+9I'm Australian so no real bias but I've only seen the first season for both versions and I must say, for the most part I prefer the US version. I prefer the US Pam, I think the Jim/Dwight combination is way more hilarious than Tim/Gareth (I think those are the names), etc though I can't particularly decide out of Gervais or Carrel..
- GalacticRerun, on 04/11/2008, -5/+10The guy pretty much shows himself up to be as ignorant as the people he dismisses.
- tp1977, on 04/11/2008, -4/+28What a sack of bile. I'm loving the US version of the office, it's got the legs and the talent to take the UK version to the next level. But dissing the cast of the UK version is just a joke. There's some heightened level of mental illness going on in that article...
- sintaxi, on 04/11/2008, -0/+4Not to mention him ***** on the writers for striking. This guy seriously needs to get a clue.
- whatthefu, on 04/11/2008, -0/+61Can you imagine how different the show would be with a laugh track? Holy *****, that would ruin almost all of the humor.
- Johntp, on 04/11/2008, -0/+6Hahaha! Thats is the funniest thing I've thought about today!
- coresnake, on 04/11/2008, -0/+6Yeh like every time Jim Halpert looks at the camera *scooby doo style canned laughter*......
- skizzbot, on 04/11/2008, -0/+1HAHAHA I could completely envision that and I just laughed out loud. But while funny in my head, it would absolutely ruin the show.
- dougdiggerton, on 04/11/2008, -0/+3think how awesome full house would have been w/ out the laugh track

- DNABeast, on 04/11/2008, -0/+12Except he's not very good at it.
- sgglynn, on 04/11/2008, -1/+2I believe it's called being arrogant. Arrogance was around before the internet, and was not invented by Maddox.

- rockrodger, on 04/11/2008, -10/+4I love the way the office portrays Americans. If we had an Australian version of the office, it would be vacant on Friday from midday as everyone would be sucking down schooeys (schooners) at the local. Get off my TV America
- raoulduke87, on 04/11/2008, -0/+1Apparently they don't have remote control technology in Australia.
- GOW619, on 04/11/2008, -1/+4this is the moment we have all been waiting for since the writers strike ended... yes.....
- aceakm, on 04/11/2008, -0/+1http://youtube.com/watch?v=ezxdgDRguMU
- scottc, on 04/11/2008, -0/+3I was waiting for it too, but after seeing that episode it makes me wonder if it wasn't written during the strike. It was awful.
- Niightwitch, on 04/11/2008, -0/+3Yes, it was awful. It had a few brief moments where it was funny, but 30 minutes basically working one joke (how uncomfortable can Michael and Jan make their guests?) was too much.
- GOW619, on 04/11/2008, -0/+1i havent seen the episode yet but it cant be that bad... can it!? god damn pacific standard time! lol
- Niightwitch, on 04/11/2008, -0/+3Yes, it was awful. It had a few brief moments where it was funny, but 30 minutes basically working one joke (how uncomfortable can Michael and Jan make their guests?) was too much.
- BeeArePro, on 04/11/2008, -0/+9One of the best shows on television.
- Moemar26, on 04/11/2008, -7/+13I hate to say it.. and maybe I'm the only one.. But as a diehard fan of the first few seasons of The Office, and someone who gladly welcomed it as an, although not nearly shoe filling but at least substantial, replacement for the pure un-distilled genius of Arrested Development.. it seems as though the past few episodes have been going downhill quickly, reducing a once witty, original, brilliant show to what seems to be the same handful of archetypal jokes over and over.
The Office, in the beginning, did something great. But to me it seems as though they're running on empty, and unfortunately, I don't see viable revival in sight.- standmatt, on 04/11/2008, -9/+5*****
- Xondar, on 04/11/2008, -1/+2Come now, the first part of season 4 was a little weak, but it picked up soon after and is gold again. Joss Whedon has been writing a few episodes in the latter part of season 4 and I think his humour has been a perfect match with the show.
- stvspl, on 04/11/2008, -0/+3I agree. File this one under "Reasons 30 Rock is the best thing on Thursday night"
- bubba9999, on 04/11/2008, -1/+2They've always had a couple of weak episodes each season, but it's pretty simplistic to declare that the series is in decline.
Last night's episode was simply hilarious. - kerowack, on 04/11/2008, -0/+2Couldn't agree more with the original poster, the show hasn't been great since season 2.
- corripio, on 04/11/2008, -0/+1Yeah, that episode, was, um, terrible. Way over the top. It was lacking a lot of the subtlety of the previous seasons. It reminded me more of a show like Reno 911, where you turn your brain off before watching. The premise of a dinner party was great, and could have been hilarious, but sadly it focused too much on Michael and Jan. The episode "Cocktails" from season 3 already did the dinner party idea, but that episode was funny...Dwight spending the party checking out the structural stability of the house, Michael bringing potato salad and telling everyone he and Jan are lovers, Karen tricking Jim into thinking she slept with half the people at the party...multiple funny story lines, not just one sad, over the top story line.
- warplayer, on 04/12/2008, -0/+1Damn I'm glad someone can remember back a season or so! I was having deja vu the whole episode.
- nickzee, on 04/11/2008, -1/+7Laugh track = Sabrina the Teenage Witch
- Falldog, on 04/11/2008, -1/+17I'm not a big fan of the depressive/dark turn that they've taken with regards to Micheal. He was a lot more fun as a happy idiot than a trouble at home idiot.
- Jergens, on 04/11/2008, -1/+4Agreed, but still a damn good show even with the increasing amount of uncomfortable, angry plotlines.
- warplayer, on 04/12/2008, -0/+2Yeah, it's a whole new kind of akward for the show, and it's not always funny.

- kinseyincanada, on 04/11/2008, -3/+18How can someone just dismiss the UK version like that?
- navster15, on 04/11/2008, -0/+7I know what you mean. I was about to Digg this but the jab at the UK Office and Dawn (who is a certified cutie in her own right) was over the line. Granted, I prefer the US Office, but that comes from me living in North America all my life and understanding the subtle cultural jokes. Regardless, denying props to Ricky Gervais for his comedic brilliance is just dumb.
- Sryden42, on 04/11/2008, -10/+3Steve Carrol needs to be limited to 5 minutes an episode at most. Any more than that and the show becomes unwatchable.
- cphelps, on 04/11/2008, -0/+3Who the ***** is Steve Carrol?
- nihilite, on 04/11/2008, -0/+2I thought that at first too, but he really grows on you. The more i re-watch the episodes the more i appreciate how well he plays the role. so damn good.

- xTRUMANx, on 04/11/2008, -3/+23This guy just comes off as an arrogant bastard. Leave the 'my opinion is right because its mine' attitude to maddox. I would have just ignored the article since he was praising Arrested Development but insulting the UK Office while pretending the US Office is better gives this a bury.
- peterbuldge, on 04/11/2008, -1/+10glad to see the office back but that's a pretty terrible article
- RomulusX86, on 04/11/2008, -3/+2http://www.cherryav.com.nyud.net:8080/articles/art ...
- retawd, on 04/11/2008, -10/+2The Office sucks. It stopped being funny 2 seasons ago.
- nihilite, on 04/11/2008, -1/+3then go watch american idol, retawd.
- Xondar, on 04/11/2008, -3/+20First of all, I LOVE The Office. I wish beyond all reason that Dwight and Michael and Toby and Jim and Pam and Angela and Andy and everyone else were real and I could go to scranton and apply for a job at Dunder Mifflin.
Second of all, I LOVE Arrested Development. I wish beyond all common sense that the Bluths were real and I could go buy a frozen banana and get creeped out by Tobias and hit on Lindsey and hang out with Gob.
But, I had to bury this article for being lame because the author is a huge arrogant douchebag. He talks about how awesome The Office and Arrested Development are in one breath, and then in the next says that all the writers, the very people who WROTE (and in the case of The Office wrote AND starred in) these two show are idiots and selfish for the writers strike. That is of course just before bashing anyone who hasn't seen The Office (people don't always watch TV,) instead of saying "you're an idiot" for not watching it, why doesn't he just highly recommend that people who haven't seen it try to tune in?
The whole article just left a bad taste in my mouth.- coresnake, on 04/11/2008, -1/+9Thats what she said!
- treelovinhippie, on 04/11/2008, -5/+3"While sitcoms rarely rely on anything resembling a plot, opting instead for one-liners with a laugh track, The Office is intelligently funny. For most of America, this means “you won’t get the jokes until they are explained to you, you *****.""
This guy is awesome.- NathanielJ, on 04/11/2008, -0/+3Except that comment is blatantly false, since a huge proportion of Americans think The Office is funny, and thus don't need the jokes explained to them.
- stvspl, on 04/11/2008, -0/+1Side note:
I made a movie about laugh tracks. Yeah, I know it's nothing great. Just thought it would be an interesting conversation starter.

- Timmyftw, on 04/11/2008, -0/+5are you kidding? Ever since he came back as dwight's sidekick hes been awesome!
- cphelps, on 04/11/2008, -0/+1It's just his voice. He makes me want to pound his head into the ground. I like the character itself, but a different actor or the guy could have his vocal cords operated on.
- jchrome, on 04/11/2008, -0/+5I love Arrested Development and The Office maybe even more than this guy, but wow, what a douchebag. I was repulsed by just about everything else he had to say.
- skizzbot, on 04/11/2008, -2/+5The Office is a great show, I won't argue there... it makes me laugh every time I watch it. Hell, tonight's episode was comic gold in my book. But as most everyone here has already commented, Arrested Development simply cannot be topped. I can think of no other show with such an abundance of memorable, INTELLIGENT, and well planned out scenes and jokes while producing the sheer number of laughs as consistently as A.D did. Just my $.02.
- Muramasa007, on 04/11/2008, -5/+0Dammit, he put my stapler in Jell-O again! XD
- headlessclown, on 04/11/2008, -4/+2i completely agree with the love for Arrested Development. but the office is equally as funny. its just a different type of funny.
i dunno. maybe i love too much. - arkboysooner, on 04/11/2008, -7/+2Arrested Development is overrated. Not saying it isn't funny because it definitely is and well written also, but there isn't much depth to the characters nor are the likable (IMO). Maybe since my family isn't a bunch of self centered pricks I don't relate to the show as well as some of you. The Office is great and I have loved it for a long time. It lasted through three seasons without a hitch. I'll agree that season 4 started off weak and it was because of a horrible decision to stretch the first few episodes to an hour and start focusing on story more than laughs. The only thing is, short of Jim and Pam getting together, nobody gives two ***** about Michael and Dwight's personal stories. Once they started going back to 30 minutes, a format that fits the show much better, The Office has recovered nicely. I'm just not sure how much longer it can last. The English Office lasted 4 seasons right? I don't think the show was made to last much longer than that which is why I worry about The American Office running too long and becoming redundant.
- stvspl, on 04/11/2008, -2/+2Do characters need to be likable to make good TV? Arrested Development was perfect precisely because it had such amazing characters coupled with the sharpest writing this side of ever.
The Office has already hit its peak and dropped past. 30 Rock is where it's at right now.
- stvspl, on 04/11/2008, -2/+2Do characters need to be likable to make good TV? Arrested Development was perfect precisely because it had such amazing characters coupled with the sharpest writing this side of ever.
- killbert24, on 04/11/2008, -2/+4The episode of the Office tonight was hilarious. I loved the huge plasma TV and the crappy wooden table, the candles, everything! A+
- warplayer, on 04/12/2008, -0/+1Michael's "bed." hahahahaha
- DEIx15x8, on 04/11/2008, -2/+7Anybody that trashes the UK version of the Office can't call them an Office fan. A real fan respects a shows heritage and even if you didn't love the UK version there is no way you can hate it and still love the US one.
- kelsosmythe, on 04/11/2008, -5/+0UK Office > US Office.
But at least we know the US version of Top Gear will be much better than that silly UK show...- bubba9999, on 04/11/2008, -0/+2That whole "this one is better than that one" thing is ridiculous and petty. I like both versions. Like many other people, I was worried when the US version was announced. The first episode, which was 90% taken from a UK episode, was shaky, but enough to make me want to keep watching. Since then, it's taken off and has a life of its own. It's easily my favorite show.
I worry about the new Top Gear. The hosts are the key to what make it so good. But I'll give it a fair shake.

- schizogony, on 04/11/2008, -3/+5The Dinner Party was a really creepy episode, and not really in a funny way. I've learned more about Jan than I've ever wanted to know. This show has really gotten creepy and macabre
- KenMixtape, on 04/11/2008, -0/+6Boy he really schruted that article.
- joshtj, on 04/11/2008, -0/+5Didn't like the jab at the UK Office. If this guy likes comedies for their eye candy, he has poor taste indeed.

- SACubeMonkey, on 04/11/2008, -0/+2I'm glad the office is back on but that was a ***** article about it.
- abediz, on 04/11/2008, -3/+3That was THE WORST EPISODE EVER. Simply not that funny and very awkward. I hope this is not some sign of new writers since and the old ones went other ways with the strike.
