- negrin, on 10/11/2007, -6/+72While a fan of the show, I think this is milking the franchise way too much way too soon...
- savedyankees, on 10/11/2007, -1/+55Yes, but: what else is NBC going to play during the 8 week hiatus? More Law and Order?
- Jhorra, on 10/11/2007, -6/+43I've never seen the 4400, but I thought that was about people who were abducted, then returned with supernatural powers.
- holzp, on 10/11/2007, -4/+32A 'spin on'?
- Neiby, on 10/11/2007, -2/+30I think it's a bit silly to already be doing a spinoff of a show that hasn't even completed its first season.
- fadetoone, on 10/11/2007, -4/+27Where is it written that a spin-off has to include characters from the original? Star Trek has had several spin-offs, and how many of those included characters from previous series?
- timpkmn89, on 10/11/2007, -0/+23Yahoo News's article on this said it was done because ratings were down after they came back from long breaks, and this to keep interest up when they do it in season 2
- Jhorra, on 10/11/2007, -1/+21Well, I read that you will be able to vote for your favorite character on the spinoff, and that person will become a regular character on the main show. So I guess that would be the exact opposite of a spinoff.
- Jolene, on 10/11/2007, -4/+21The 4400 miniseries ruled. The full blown drama show it turned into, sucks.
- solemnraven, on 10/11/2007, -9/+24Maybe you guys need a better idea of what a spin-off is.
Hercules = Zena = Spin off
not so main char. from show 1 now stars in show 2 with appearances from other stars and chars from the universe the are both part of.
Strak Trek - Star Treck TNG = New Series
May some times have guest stars from previous show but is not mainly based off of a character in the original show although also takes place in the same universe and/or time line
Got it yet?
Cheers - Fraser = Spin off
Transformers - Transformers Beast Wars = New Series
Buffy - Angel = Spin Off
ok well, if you don't get it now, you're not going to. - skyhighrockets, on 10/11/2007, -3/+17Yeah, I don't understand why people think this is a bad thing.
If its the same quality as Heroes, and gives a lot of backstory, I wholeheartedly welcome it.
It will fill up the time inbetween the season, and will answer a lot of questions about the previous generation of Heroes. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+15Law and Order: Boca Raton
can't wait - Jennica, on 10/11/2007, -2/+14The Office rules.
- mblah, on 10/11/2007, -4/+14I'm more excited about the 30 episodes of The Office. The Office is without a doubt the best show ever.
- StarManta, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10solemnraven: care to quote a dictionary on that? I don't see anything that suggests any definition more specific than "a series derived from another series" (which is what I've always understood it to be, and seems to be the popular opinion.
- solemnraven, on 10/11/2007, -6/+15Opps under wrong comment, bury.
- barryiggins, on 10/11/2007, -2/+10the real Heroes Shocker:

We have barely seen the end of the first season and they want a spin off? This is over kill. Whoever thought of this idea needs to be sacked from NBC. For Heroes to be a long term prospect , it needs to be kept fresh and original. At this junction in its direction it can maintain this with good scriptwriters and protecting the series from over working the writers and producers. This wont happen if there is a spin off. Secondly over familiarness with the series will make it boring.
NBC dont kill a good thing. If its not broke dont fix it. You have been warned. - andyzies, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7I dont care what anybody says... I am stoked.
NBC is my favorite network... as far as shows go.
End of story - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -2/+8More teenage girls in cheerleader skirts and tight sweaters please. Striper MILF's are cool as well.
- DiggzDE, on 10/11/2007, -3/+8Is this show just going to about all the "Heroes" parents humping in bed? I don't know how much more "origin" related you can get then this show which is about the Heroes finding themselves and their powers.
Unless of course this focuses on Claire's father and his company and its initial setup. In that mindset. That would be rather cool.
And anyone know WHY Heroes isn't returning in Fall but sounds like it will be returning later? - intilli4, on 10/11/2007, -9/+14All I have to say about this is...
DUDE That Totally Rocks Socks... - ArmandoM, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6If you want something to last 3 seasons, then stop watching it after the 3rd season.
They are a corporation in the end, and their ultimate goal is to make money. They will (and should) keep selling it as long as people watch it. If people lose interest, they'll cancel it.
If they can keep it as good as it's been for season 1, I'll keep watching. - ninetimes, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6I agree somewhat, but in fairness, the creators have said several times that the series won't simply 'continue' to the next season. From the beginning, they've been claiming that each season will be a self-contained story, but each season will be set in the same universe and with the same premise (X-men-like mutant superheroes).
They've hinted that the next season may jump forward in time or jump back in time, and that many of the characters might not stay on. It may center on particular characters (perhaps the Petrelli family?) but will not be a single continuous story with all the same characters.
It's not clear where the whole thing is going, but it's a little soon to think they've sold out. - Netmindstorm, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6"Where is it written that a spin-off has to include characters from the original? Star Trek has had several spin-offs, and how many of those included characters from previous series?"
I think they all did in some way or another...but I think I get your point, it was really only ST:DS9 that included chars from ST:TNG as main "every episode" characters. Good point. - NSMike, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6" 'Yes, but: what else is NBC going to play during the 8 week hiatus? More Law and Order?'
The Black Donnellys..."
or Studio 60... - doronster195, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5Shocker?
Two in the pink, one in the stink. - Rocketbird, on 10/11/2007, -4/+8"'Friday Night Lights' will now air on Friday nights, finally"
...Finally? ***** that, now it's going to get cancelled since it's competing against people who have LIVES and THE VERY HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL GAMES IT'S SUPPOSED TO BE ABOUT - taxman, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4So we make shows like American idol, greys anatomy and 100 other spin-offs of crime shows starring sunglasses the most watched shows every week but whine about a spin-off about the best damn drama series this year?
Anything remotely close to heroes or even lost and prison break are much more welcome than the 50 reality shows and 36 CSI and law&order spin offs and copies.
I know i cant get futurama or seinfeld back anytime soon, so 30 episodes of the office is also more than welcome. - rotarychainsaw, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4I don't understand it, but I like it!
- warplayer, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3This sounds like a good idea, although I am a bit concerned. The actor who plays Matt Parkman (his name escapes me at the moment) said in a recent radio interview that the last 4 minutes of the season finale is going to be the first 4 minutes of the season two premiere. NBC better be planning to really set these two shows on their own if they don't want to confuse the general public on where that last four minute story line leads to.
I tend to think of these six episodes as more of an Idol-style spin-off mini-series (wow way too many hyphens there heh) rather than a full blown spin-off series. Although they may be planning to ressurect this Origins series every season, which would be pretty cool.
Overall, I find this very comic booky and a really creative way to set Heroes apart from the fodder of dramas on TV. The more Heroes stays grounded in its comic book roots the better. - blueagave00, on 10/11/2007, -3/+5NBC may not always make sense, but at least they're not FOX.
- Incognito, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4Uh oh Lost 2.0 incoming
- TheSack, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Why do US shows go on 6-8 week breaks mid season? I've never understood it.
- SteamyV, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4I, too, would like to know when the official second season of Heroes is slated to begin.
I'm all about the interactivity of voting on a popular character, but the reality of television production (writing, filming, payroll, etc.) makes me wonder how big of a part the "spun-on" character will really matter to the overall story. Unless they write treatments for every possible character outcome, that is. That would be insane. - shredswithpiks, on 10/11/2007, -9/+11"Yes, but: what else is NBC going to play during the 8 week hiatus? More Law and Order?"
The Black Donnellys... - solemnraven, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2oops, wrong commnet....
Ok Star,
From Wiki Spin-off (Media)
"In genre fiction, the term parallels the usage in television; it is usually meant to indicate a substantial change in narrative viewpoint and activity from that (previous) storyline based around the activities of the series' principal protagonist(s) and so is a shift to that action and overall narrative thread of some other protagonist(s), which now becomes the central or main thread (storyline) of the new sub-series. The new protagonist generally appears first as a minor or supporting character in the main story line within a given milieu, and it is very common for the previous protagonist to have a supporting or cameo role, at the least as a historical mention, in the new sub-series."
"A new series is started with the same theme and existing in the same universe as the original series, but may not necessarily have the same characters. Examples of this type are the Star Trek, Stargate, Law & Order, and CSI series. These are sometimes called franchises."
=P - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -5/+7Sorry, your comment could have been very intelligent, I don't know.
I just dugg down when I saw Gilmore Girls. - Exhaust, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1@wowsah156
You make a good point about risk. It's obvious greed made NBC risk the show. To spin off before the first season is crazy.
I'm on the fence about this. I'm a huge fan so think it could turn out to be a great show but even then overkill is a real concern. - kinseyincanada, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1The spin-off will most likely be about the linderman corporation and how they tried to change the world.
- midejitsu, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Your math confuses me. Seems to me they ordered 17.5 new hours of The Office. 30 episodes, five of which are an hour long. If you discount commercials it's considerably less. Who knows, maybe Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant will write episodes for this season as well. Would that make you happy?
- mrASSMAN, on 10/11/2007, -3/+4Heroes is the best show ever. So, spin-off? ***** yeah I'm watching it.
- warplayer, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Or go to NBC.com and watch every episode, complete with cast/crew commentary.
- PaulLev, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Good for Heroes for trying a new kind of spin-off. It's starting to revolutionize television in more ways than one. http://paullevinson.blogspot.com/2007/05/heroes-landslide-winnowing-and.html
- solemnraven, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I didn't EDIT anything, i just didn't copy the WHOLE article. ~_^
- TheSack, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Hmm that makes sense I guess.
But shows like Lost, Battlestar Galactica, The Sopranos and Entourage had really long mid season breaks this season...surely those shows don't need to come out in portions due to risk. - Tigrou, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1First season at least it's risk balancing. They buy limited runs of the show to see how ratings go. Seasons after that kinda the same thing, where they typically buy in unit of 13 second season (normally being 13*2 new shows a year, with reruns...or another show...inbetween).
- ngmcs8203, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1What's BSG??
- undergrace, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1It's all about the sweeps months, which are November/February/May/July. From the network standpoint, Sweeps = New Episodes = Audience = Ratings = Ad Revenue. They put on new episodes the same four months as the competition to try to get the top spot on Nielsen, thus more profit. Some of the big networks are starting to be creative with their scheduling, but unless it's a breakout show like LOST with an unconventional method of storytelling they stick to the typical 22-episodes over 4 months. It just makes sense financially for them. They figure if we're true fans we'll wait the two months for the next batch of new episodes. Sadly, it doesn't always work... but since when did they listen to the viewers anyway? It's all about the $$$.
- NSMike, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I'm guessing it's a similar run to what BSG is doing. BSG returns in January '08, but they're putting out a miniseries that has nothing to do with the main storyline in the fall. It's a hiatus remedy, essentially. Why both Heroes and BSG are on such a long hiatus, I don't have an explanation for. It seems to be a trend recently in TV.
