- vondrak, on 09/30/2008, -2/+55I think they are blowing way too much of their money on CGI special effects. They use that time slow down effect every chance they get.
- ninjarabbits, on 10/01/2008, -6/+51Need to cut costs? Why don't you start by permanently dumping both Mohinder and Maya!!!!!
- paulishuku, on 10/01/2008, -1/+44All I have to say is..
First Season I was glued to the T.V. and timed my breaks during commercials so I could arrive back before it resumed.
Second Season I actually read parts of a magazine during the last episode. - kidjay, on 10/01/2008, -5/+46what about convoluted, confusing 1990s marvel comic writing? does that limit the show? does that make it incomprehensible, horribly paced and stupid?
just watch, at the end of this chapter, a time traveler named...i dunno, Coaxial comes back from the future claiming to be the child of nathan petrelli and whoever the ***** ally larter is playing this week.
don't get me wrong, its a fun show, but its turning into a jerkfest for the most annoying kind of fanboy hardcore comic book nerds. - Sornos, on 10/01/2008, -0/+38Well if they didn't fans would always ask why Peter/Hiro didn't just slow time in X situation.
- timedalkat, on 10/01/2008, -1/+30Ridiculous. I thought the segment when Sylar paused the objects Petrelli blew into the air, was higher than par for tv. Criticize it to the max and complain when it's gone. It's still better than most shows, including 4400.
- bwhite, on 10/01/2008, -4/+32Come on ... Maya is hot. Dump Nicky/Jessica/Whatever her name is and Micah.
- fluidfoundation, on 09/30/2008, -0/+28Seeing a bit of fear or look of being overwhelmed on Sylars face was worth 10 crappy house explosions.
- roijen, on 10/01/2008, -0/+25Visually Heroes is fantastic. The strong colors they use are great. Definitely a show developed for HD because a lot of the scenes have detail at depth.
That said, what really attracted me to the show was the pilot. I liked the way the characters were portrayed. They were definitely not all about their powers because they didn't really know they had them yet. It seemed almost metaphorical. Season two seemed to be all about their powers and how they could use them. I don't care if they can spew fire. Tell me a story and I will watch. - CraigReed, on 10/01/2008, -3/+24You do realize that the time slow down effect is pretty much just a bunch of actors standing around pretending that time has stopped. The only CGI involved is a few air born stuff to help sell the effect.
- heiroglyph, on 10/01/2008, -0/+18This was one of the better episodes since season 1, but the changes he listed wouldn't have fixed the bad writing.
The characters make dumb decisions, ignore their powers when needed and are generally just stupid since season 1.
At least the effects guys are doing a great job within the budget they are given. - houndeyex, on 10/02/2008, -3/+21I keep asking why the hell don't PEOPLE JUST AIM FOR THE FREAKING HEAD? SERIOUSLY. Syler should have died like 7 times now. Let's move on from the repeating story line already.
- snagra, on 09/30/2008, -2/+19Yea, but it should still be doable. I mean look at Battlestar Gallactica.
- removesstains, on 10/02/2008, -2/+19Maya sucks and her Power is freaking lame as hell.
- joshefosho, on 10/02/2008, -0/+16They just need to show Claire re grow a boob at least once this season, that should suffice.
- Gerz1219, on 10/02/2008, -1/+14Special effects for a show like that are much cheaper and easier to produce. You have the main sets on a soundstage somewhere, and then you have the space stuff which is all done in a computer using the same models, backgrounds, and other assets over and over again. Every once in a while they put actors in front of a greenscreen and quickly render a skyline for the background.
Heroes has lots of characters with superpowers that affect each other and the environment around them. They can't use very many cheap all-CGI shots, nor do most of the shots include a simple foreground-background distinction. The visuals implied by the show's premise are very difficult to pull off properly on a TV budget, and it's a problem because this show always builds up a big confrontation which *should* lead to a superfight, then cheaps out at the last minute. This is a series wired for anticlimax. - Roger, on 10/02/2008, -0/+12> what about convoluted, confusing 1990s marvel comic writing?
Don't forget pretentious! - inactive, on 09/30/2008, -5/+16All of his money paid for Michael Scott's fat suit.
- sindex, on 10/02/2008, -1/+11The problem is Tim Kring has no idea what the point of the show is. He seems to have a lot of "cool ideas" he wants to see, but no unified, cohesive vision for the stories.
LOST did things right: Design your beginning, middle and end points first. Decide roughly how many episodes it will take to tell the story (Lost has expected around 100, but they are actually making 120), and you can play "fill in the blank" as you need to with character development and backstory. Heroes on the other hand seemed to create the perfect first season without any expectation of being picked up for future seasons, and have consequently been waffling between "kick ass plot" and "just rewrite some Marvel story no one's read in a decade."
I enjoy the show. I really do. But it's hard to ignore that in order to make up for a truly stupid season 2 (which admittedly was cut short by the writer's strike), they've overdone it already in season 3. I hope they repair it and get back on track because it really could be one of the best fantasy/dramas currently on TV. - slightlyoffbeat, on 10/02/2008, -0/+10He more reminded me of Jeff Goldblum in the remake of "the fly"
- harvinator24, on 10/01/2008, -7/+17First season was amazing, second was alright, but i see no reason to complain about this season. It just started and it has been good so far. Those of you that dislike this show only say so because you on the balls of Lost.
- quomen, on 10/02/2008, -0/+9I like how they're turning Mohinder into the equivalent of Beast from X-Men. Seriously? Super agility, strength, smarts, and now he's mutating.. His hair even looks Beast-ish.
- inactive, on 10/02/2008, -2/+11I'm not impressed by Heroes anymore. It's lost its newness, the writing is convoluted and wandering, and it just feels like the writers are stumbling in the dark sometimes. We still watching, but it's not the first show in the watch queue when we fire up the DVR.
- Rollic, on 10/02/2008, -2/+11Can budget reasons explain why the show is so half-assed, moronic, and perpetually disappointing? Did they lose their "good writers" budget after the 1st season?
- InfinitySnatch, on 10/01/2008, -0/+8You tell people to call you Sylar, or you just try and emulate him so they will? I can't decide which is lamer.
- Kohaxx, on 10/02/2008, -0/+8So far I'm liking Season 3, the pace has picked up. My only beef with Season 2 was it was complete "filler". You could have skipped all of Season 2, gone straight from watching Season 1 to Season 3 and all you would be confused about are like three characters that can be summarized in a sentence.
Maya has ability to kill people's blood with her eyes, she's gullible and self-loathing but she's hot so it's ok.
Adam Monroe is really old and a copycat of Claire's power, he's holding a grudge because Hiro stole his girlfriend.
Elle does stuff with lightning and she's kinky.
The end.
Season 3's really picked up and it looks like they'll be taking the story directions the fans aren't expecting so I'm looking forward to it again. I cackled with the "You drink decaf don't you Noah?" line. - ccheath, on 10/02/2008, -0/+8The future peter froze time not sylar...
- Phearce, on 10/02/2008, -0/+8You nailed it. Since when was telling a good story limited by budget?
- tolley, on 10/02/2008, -0/+8That explains why Sylar, with all of his powers, only seems to use telekinesis.
- bjs3171, on 10/02/2008, -0/+7well, first off, Sylar is clearly not "a good guy" now. did you miss the whole murder of one of the villains? also, one of them did get away. i'm sure he'll end up being important to the script.
i still have hope, the first few episodes have been very exciting, and i'm not sure what was so convoluted about that episode, except maybe Hiro's plotline, right now. everything else has been pretty straight forward. - blacklilyninja, on 10/02/2008, -2/+9"budget is so limited we had to steal the scripts from 4400"
- Joab, on 10/02/2008, -0/+7Its probably at least 10 if not 20 times that of BSG.
- FUR10N, on 10/01/2008, -1/+8maybe it's just me but I thought that last episode (E03) was the best episode since Season 1
- StrangeFamous, on 10/02/2008, -0/+64400 was an awesome show!
Heroes is just now getting into the plot ideas that 4400 first introduced (i.e. discovering a way for anyone to get powers who wanted them). Every episode was engaging, and it all slowly built upon what happened during the very first episode.
4400 took the comic-book idea of superpowers and applied it to the modern-day, while still keeping it realistic and in the realm of "what would really happen if this occurred". They also played around with all sorts of sci-fi cliches and character archetypes. The writing was good, the acting was good, and it never got dull.
Heroes is a great show, don't get me wrong, but 4400 was grossly underrated, and the fact that it was canceled is a damn shame.
People, back me up here! - alpharaptor, on 10/02/2008, -0/+6how many times are they gonna use shipping containers in scenes this season?
- jimbolla, on 10/02/2008, -0/+6Parent is correct. They explain that on the commentary tracks during season 1 and 2.
- RevAradia, on 10/02/2008, -2/+8I was just a bit disappointed last night and I had REALLY been looking forward to it too. If they're shorting his funding then why not, oh I don't know maybe stop throwing fireballs around and work on the characterization that they already HAVE??
- FaithclubDotNet, on 10/01/2008, -2/+8That was my favorite episode of Heroes, even better than 5 yr gone in my opinion. Angela is a really interesting special. She can see the future. So if it is a good future, she tries not to affect stuff. But if it is a bad future, she tries to affect as much as possible. What better way of affecting the future than to befriend a psychopath, super villian(Sylar)?
- StrangeFamous, on 10/02/2008, -0/+6Lost is perfect for DVD watching. Get the first season and you'll blow right through it in no time. It's awesomely addictive.
- shadeOfGrey, on 10/02/2008, -0/+6I think she's amply stacked for someone who's only 3 ft tall.
- StrangeFamous, on 10/02/2008, -0/+6Watching a boob grow from a lump of flesh is probably a lot less awesome than you think it is. Unless you're the kind of person that gets off on watching the surgery channel.
- Joab, on 10/02/2008, -1/+6Unlike BSG, a lot of Heros' budget goes to the hell that is marketing. You don't see BSG posters everwhere's you go.
Also from a digital effects standpoint its a lot easier to create a 3d models/effects engine once. Then have the animator just draw the paths the ships take and key trigger events like gun fire. With Hero's you have to have the effects created for every episode which is a huge pain considering you have to key off of people. In the effects world the closer something has to get to interact with the real world the more it cost and harder it becomes. - WraTH017, on 10/02/2008, -1/+6The lack of special effects don't excuse the ridiculous plot. Heroes jumped the shark in a bad way.
- whahaa, on 10/02/2008, -0/+5bigger.
- Neiby, on 10/02/2008, -1/+6The first season was great except for the finale. It was plot driven with plenty of twists, but not so much that it was overwhelming. The plot, assuming there is one, now consists entirely of twists without the plot. The characters act out of character, half of the actors are awful, the dialogue is amateurish and unrealistic, and the time travel has ruined the show.
I had high hopes for it, but I think it's going to take some serious re-writing (and perhaps all new writers and actors) to save the show.
I suppose it doesn't matter. I've started watching Fringe. It is superior to Heroes in every way. - bjs3171, on 10/02/2008, -1/+6so what? every character is taken from funny pages. he IS a doctor, and being so scrawny, it makes sense that his super power would be the exact opposite.
- Someguy101, on 02/19/2009, -0/+5It's kind of been a major theme of the show since the first season.
- lordtyros, on 10/02/2008, -2/+7She doesn't have any to regrow...
- gospe1337, on 10/02/2008, -0/+5The show has lost its touch, sadly.
- Fleagleman, on 10/01/2008, -2/+7NBC pumps more advertising during this series than anything else, so for me, they had better deliver if I'm going to be subjected to that. Do they this season? So far, not even close.
