- Sheri123, on 07/22/2008, -3/+98She was a great character actress with an excellent sense of timing. She will be missed. I never thought that she got the attention that she deserved.
- inactive, on 07/22/2008, -4/+90I always thought she was the best of the 4. She was hilarious in that role and perfectly cast. She will be missed!
- ftgarcia, on 07/22/2008, -1/+79Estelle (Sophia) thank you for being a friend.
- kcpepper111, on 07/22/2008, -1/+66Picture it, Sicily 1923...
:( RIP!! - SkyeWolfie, on 07/22/2008, -2/+46She certainly will be missed, I really loved her in that show!
- inactive, on 07/22/2008, -0/+43Just read this...
When McClanahan's libidinous character Blanche once complained that her life was an open book, Sophia shot back, "Your life's an open blouse."
Hilarious... - brooke25, on 07/22/2008, -0/+42Dorothy: Well, Blanche is certainly taking her sister’s novel better than I would. I would kill my sister Gloria if she ever wrote about my sex life.
Sophia: You would kill your sister over a pamphlet?
RIP, Estelle. - xdfgf, on 07/22/2008, -10/+46Thank you for being a friend
Traveled down the road and back again
your heart is true you're a pal and a confidant
I'm not ashamed to say
I hope it always will stay this way
My hat is off, won't you stand up and take a bow
And if you threw a party
Invited everyone you knew
You would see, the biggest gift would be for me
and the card attached would say,
Thank you for being a friend
Thank you for being a friend
Thank you for being a friend
Thank you for being a friend
If it's a car you lack
I'd surely buy you a cadillac
Whatever you need, anytime of the day or night
I'm not ashamed to say
I hope it always will stay this way
My hat is off, won't you stand up and take a bow
And when we both get older
With walking canes and hair of gray
Have no fear, even though it's hardly here
I will stand real close and say,
Thank you for being a friend
(I want to thank you)
Thank you for being a friend

Thank you for being a friend
(I want to thank you)
Thank you for being a friend

Let me tell you bout a friend
(I want to thank you)
Thank you for being a friend
(I want to thank you)
Thank you for being a friend
(I want to thank you)
Thank you for being a friend
And when we die, and float away
I'll see you there, and once again

Thank you for being a friend - inactive, on 07/22/2008, -0/+36That sucks. Her zings were always the best!
- lesleye, on 07/22/2008, -0/+29I loved the Golden Girls and I loved Sophia's dry sense of wit! But I did think she would have been older than 84.
- inactive, on 07/22/2008, -3/+32crying golden tears :(
- kellfinder, on 07/22/2008, -0/+27She left us with a lot of laughs.
- ftgarcia, on 07/22/2008, -0/+27Bea Arthur was actually older than Estelle. They made her up to play the role of Dorthy's mom but she was younger the whole time! .... a little bit of Golden Girls trivia =)
- alapoet, on 07/22/2008, -0/+27Happy journeys, Estelle... Thanks for all the laughs!
- inactive, on 07/22/2008, -0/+26She was amazingly funny. I will miss her - good thing we have DVD's
- homah, on 07/22/2008, -0/+26I watch Golden Girls reruns on Lifetime, and I'm not ashamed. Rest in peace.
- rgodfrey, on 07/22/2008, -0/+25Way to punctuate this article with the perfect picture.
- inactive, on 07/22/2008, -0/+22and I hope she was happy...
- ToysRUs, on 07/22/2008, -10/+31perhaps a golden shower will make you feel better
- robohiggins, on 07/22/2008, -0/+15She was a pal and a confidant.
- ileftfark, on 07/22/2008, -1/+16Bea Arthur was always the hot one anyway.
- nowsamsara, on 07/22/2008, -1/+16This makes me sad...
- nowsamsara, on 07/22/2008, -0/+14Many people may not remember...but she was Cher's characters mother in "Mask" with Eric Stoltz. Great movie if you have not seen it. Heart touching. I loved knowing her as Sophia Petrillo and then seeing older movies and noticing the characters were her! Not to mention...I used to call my Mimi "Sophia" cause she looked like her and acted like her! LoL
I feel like I lost my grandma again... :( On the bright side, a testament to her greatness are all these wonderful, sweet, and emotional notes. Some of you Diggers are just so awesome!
Thank you for being a friend! - Wargalas, on 07/22/2008, -1/+14Stop! Or my mom will shoot! :)
- Hero0fTime, on 07/22/2008, -1/+14Estelle... thank you for being a friend.
- shogan191, on 07/22/2008, -0/+12it was really a great show and she was a huge part of it's success. Getting old is sad.
- Carnivale, on 07/22/2008, -0/+12The show wouldn't have been the same without her comedic timing. I've been a fan of this show since I was a little kid and she always reminded me of my own granny. At least she is in a better place not suffering from dementia any longer.
- Villagemom, on 07/22/2008, -0/+11I think that her success shows that you can accomplish great things at an age when many put themselves out to pasture. Her accomplishments are inspirational. She will be missed.
- ileftfark, on 07/23/2008, -0/+10See... I ... I was just "joking". You scare me.
- inactive, on 07/22/2008, -1/+11This is sad, she was so funny.
- inactive, on 07/22/2008, -0/+10Oh she was my favorite, humor like that is hard to come by!
- DocKC, on 07/22/2008, -1/+10I'm so sad. I loved her. She was the best!! I never like hearing about deaths. But then again, does anyone? :(
- livelife365, on 07/22/2008, -0/+9good life, we all should have one like hers...
- koenigje, on 07/22/2008, -2/+11Is 82 the new 84?
- Miamisun, on 07/22/2008, -1/+9And i was waiting for the Sequel to Stop of my mom will shoot! RIP Estelle :(
- mushoo, on 07/22/2008, -0/+8Actually she is a year younger than Beatrice Arthur, which just reinforces how well she played the part of Sophia.
- drbonemonkey, on 07/22/2008, -1/+8Sad day.... I remember watching many episodes of the Golden Girls during summer break from school as a kid!
- inactive, on 07/22/2008, -0/+7She was the sexy one.
- Anniepooh, on 07/22/2008, -1/+8Oh, farewell funny lady! Travel lightly.
- roho76, on 07/22/2008, -0/+6Man I ***** loved the Golden Girls. I started watching it with my Grandma of all people and ended up loving it. It was one of my fondest memories as a child. RIP i will miss you. There's always reruns I guess.
- elister, on 07/22/2008, -0/+6Not a great way to die, my grandmother went the same way last July.
- mlfoley, on 07/22/2008, -1/+6Oh man. That is so sad. RIP. :(
- inactive, on 07/22/2008, -1/+6That was Clara Peller.
- whataboutdave, on 07/22/2008, -0/+5"suffered from advanced dementia"
I'm going to stay young forever. Who's coming with me? - mediaspree, on 07/22/2008, -0/+5Wow. So she was only like 60 in the Golden Girls? Any recent pictures?
- clarked2, on 07/22/2008, -0/+4She was 84, four days away from her 85th Birthday.
- DrMilkdad, on 07/22/2008, -2/+6Don't beat yourself up over this. It's not your fault. Dammit, Estelle was old. That's what old people do. They die.
- DerProfi, on 07/22/2008, -0/+4RIP Clara.
- ayeroxor, on 07/23/2008, -0/+4Can't have two in one, but if she's cremated, you could have one Estelle Getty in two cups...
That cranky bitch is smiling down on us now. Wait, no, on closer inspection she's saying "***** em" and walking off to play some shuffleboard. :P - bmoretz82, on 07/22/2008, -2/+5What a douche.
