- 5thfreedom, on 10/12/2007, -12/+31The article actually talks about the pros and cons of the 3rd season so far, not the show itself. Lost doesn't suck.
- solarisom, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18They didn't. Last I heard, they were considering a 4-5 season run, maybe with a movie to end the show, and I think that could be a good way to end the show in a climactic, non-mysterious way (maybe hoping for all the answers is wishful thinking...).
- arunforce, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17When did they say it was suppose to be no longer than 3 seasons?
- aplardi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12I think we can all agree to this. J.J. loves complex storylines. And I feel the same problem that happened with Alias is going to happen to lost. Too many complexities, and not the type of show anyone can just start watching during the middle of a season.
Lost and Alias are Serial types, much like Star Wars and the Serial Chapters they are molded after. They are not great for TV, for the reason that it is hard to gain new viewers who are casually flipping the channels, and not everyone can afford to watch the DVDs and what not. Lost has tried to fix this with summary episodes, as has Battlestar Galactica.
Now, back to J.J. in general. There is a chance that people will lose interest in Lost as they did with Alias because all that happens is more plot lines get exposed. He had a great idea, and a great formula, but there is nothing foreseeable on the other side of the equation. Chances are we will get a half-hearted ending to this show as they struggle to tie up the loose ends.
There will NOT be a in Lost Movie in the theaters for those reasons, I promise it. American TV doesn't do good with serial plot lines. Look at The Office. The UK ended it after 14 episodes and a special. The US version at this point feels to be dragging on. There are other examples, but in my humble opinion a lot of this has to do with the production mentality of the US.
I love Lost, and I love J.J.'s work, but you could even see a little of that with Mission Impossible 3 containing nothing more than a MacGuffun "Rabit Foot" that was just an excuse for action. On a side note part of the reason the first MI was so much better was because it wasn't about gunplay and fight scenes, Tom didn't even fire a gun in the whole movie!
Just some food for thought. - dicknuts, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12To me, the only thing that sucks about the show is 5 minutes of commercials every 6 minutes.
- Valleye, on 10/12/2007, -34/+44Battlestar Galactica is better than both.
- 5thfreedom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I don't agree. I have enjoyed the first 2 seasons so much that I am able to be forgiving of the shortcomings of season 3. I don't think real lost fans are just going to give up on the show because the first 6 episodes of a season don't quite live up to what they've seen in the past. You can't be so fickle.
That being said, the article makes some good points. But we've known for a while that these 6 episodes were going to be different than the regular season, so it's hard to judge. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7No it doesn't suck, but right when they get me interested again THEY TAKE ANOTHER BREAK!! That last show was F*ing crazy.
- squison, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I'm done with lost on TV.. the only way to see this show is via the DVD or whatever after the season's over so there's no waiting for a week to 4 months for the next tiny tidbit of plot.
Oh, and pro#6: Kate's damn hot. - Four20, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9. . .bittorrent. . .
- lukas88, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8JoeDharma FTW
His biggest point: This mini-season took us nowhere. It didn't answer any big questions. Hell, it didn't even give us many new mysteries. It seems like its only purpose was to be filler. - reddevil3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I think you make a really valid point. The Simpsons, Friends, X-Files...I could go on and on.
- h00ligan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4to the guy proposing we'll get full answers or wont...
we can't get answers to questions they haven't thought through and obviously have no ***** clue as to the end of where the trail leads.
I don't buy Lost being written far in advance, i think they are changing ***** left and right on a whim, and the show reflects it. Season one was GREAT.. the first 2/3 or season 2 sucked ass.. season 3 is BETTER than two so far, but still nothing has touched one.. they ran out of ideas and are treading water till they iron the new ones out... whether they say they have written 5 seasons in advance or not, i think once they realized everyone knew where they were going, they sorta thought.. hmm.. maybe we aren't so clever.. midnight rewrite! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5American TV does it. If it has something good, it'll drag it out till it sucks. I used to love Lost, but I see it going down this road. TV is different in other countries, take Korean TV shows for example. They are all mini-series and have a decent story arc and end. 15-20 episode series. Then even if something is awesome, they don't decide, "Well this show is quite popular... let's extend it for 3 more seasons..."
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I can't get into Lost. It's like the X-files: nothing makes sense, for every one step forward there are four steps back and you never figure out anything.
- StephenChow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Argh! Anime for the Live-action is what it is!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3My problem with lost is you really could fit the entire season of plot advancement into one episode but they drag it out over ten.. I really am torn to freezing myself until the show is over so i can sit down and watch all the seasons at once,
- monsterdog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Lost sucks so much that they're changing the Dharma connection to Dyson....
- WeeklyGeek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Agreed. There was only frustration and poor writing. Kate and Sawyer just all of a sudden deciding it would be a good idea to bone in the cage? What the crap?
- Protoss, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5...MythTv Comm Skip...
- willard34, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I have to admit, I agree with every CON, but not so many of the PROs. Yes it's a mini-season, but dang, now we gotta wait til next year to get back on the island?
I've had enough of the flashbacks to be honest. It's time to start and stick with the story on the island(s). Speaking of which, how the ***** did nobody see that other island?! The scotsman sailed around for what, 2 weeks? And he didn't see it?
I also resent having Paulo and Niki shove down my throat. Like they been there all day.
In short, I will still watch when the next season comes around, but I hope they drive this somewhere. - ulsterwrod, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1lol...yep it sucks. there really isn't much of a point to it.
it's mainly just gratuitous plot twists, and overusing multiple storylines and multiple characters to get attention while saying nothing much of significance. - mickwalks, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2make up your mind does it suck or no?
- UGM2099, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Of course it's written as they go along, do you think they had 100 scripts written in advance? They've said that when they introduce an element in to a show (such as the hatch) they know exactly how it will end
- bulletstorm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Battlestar Galactica licks LOST's nuts.
- subterfu9e, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I love Lost but with the exception of the jaw-dropping 1st 15 minutes of the season premiere, I'm pretty disappointed with the past few episodes. Anyone heard of how Abrams might leave after the end of this season? Read about it on tv.com some weeks back but I can't find the exact page.
- WeeklyGeek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yep, and the podcast basically affirms this. They didn't even expect for Ben to be such a big character until they saw how the actor performed. The writing in the beginning of this third season just feel so shallow.
- bocaJWho, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@aplardi
True, serial programs generally don't do well, but they are not unprecedented. Babylon 5 mangaged to run the entire 5 seasons it was planned. - drewdogger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i totally agree...these writers have no clue where this show is going and just make up new crap as they go along...liked the first 2 seasons...this one sux
- sephiroth965, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Here is why I hate lost:
The series never goes anywhere and has no coherent plotline. It almpst seems like they just make it up as they go along. - anachronaut, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"Babylon 5 mangaged [sic] to run the entire 5 seasons it was planned."
And they should have stopped after season 4, since they'd been forced to "wrap it up" a season early. Once Babylon 5 got a reprieve and went to TNT and got Turner-ized, it just wasn't the same show anymore and sucked horribly. Season 5 was lousy, the movies were horrid, and the spin-off was just wretched dreck. And that Legend of the Rangers movie on SciFi was god-awful, too.
Other than that, though, Babylon 5 remains one of my favorite sci-fi shows of all time. I just try to forget that anything happened after the end of season 4. - bulletstorm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0So do you. Short and sweet.
- destinyland, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I agree with the cons.
We liked the characters from Season One. WHY NOT JUST STICK WITH THEM?!! - bulletstorm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Blasphemy!!!! The X-Files was Iconic. And Lost is the best show on TV today. It may not be up to par with what the X-Files was but in my opinion nothing really is.
- Cl1mh4224rd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Speaking of which, how the ***** did nobody see that other island?! The scotsman sailed around for what, 2 weeks? And he didn't see it?"
From the "lift up your eyes and look to the north" etched on Eko's Jesus Stick, I'm guessing the second island is to the north of the main island. None of the survivors have been to the north, except for maybe the tail section, but no one really knows if their crash site would allow them to see the second island.
We don't really know where Desmond sailed. He went away from the island, not necessarily around it... - Aggressor, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2But if I wasn't fickle... my grandma wouldn've been wrong about me... and that's not possible ;)
- bravecoward, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1I agree with the pro's writer.
- reddevil3, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3"The Wire" is the greatest TV show ever. The current season airing on HBO is beyond magnificent. I know very few people on digg have seen that show, but if you have seen it you'll agree with me.
BSG is a close second though. I lost interest in Lost by the end of season 2. - newbietheatre, on 10/12/2007, -10/+7@ Valleye,
Most definitely - but there are many shows superior to Lost. - Aggressor, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2Well... the 3rd season is where it is at right? I mean it's defined in the moment... if it continues down either track it's either going to suck or isn't.
- Sazzle, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2Short sighted and fickle. LAME.
- Theguywhoknows, on 10/12/2007, -5/+0lost sucks
- lokon, on 10/12/2007, -5/+0JJ Abrams or one of the other producers said on www.thefuselage.com that they have enough material for 7 seasons.
- kendra, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1"# SEX: Do I really need to explain why this is a PRO?"
Yes, he does. - scott1, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2"Battlestar Galactica is better than both."
The Broken is better then all of them. - culbeda, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1"But Heroes is better, at the moment..."
At this very moment, the plot is more engaging. But the cast isn't nearly as strong as Lost's. Unfortunately, Lost seems determined to keep killing characters just to evoke a reaction.
"Battlestar Galactica is better than both."
Have you actually watched it lately? I'm beginning to think it might have "jumped the shark". It's still decent, but... WAY too much drama and the BG writers aren't that good at drama. (Although they're getting better.) - mutatron, on 10/12/2007, -11/+2You're all wrong. Both Lost and Battlestar Galactica suck, big time - FACT!
- aplardi, on 10/12/2007, -15/+6Legal Purchase on iTunes?
okay you can bury this now ;) - TenMinuteParty, on 10/12/2007, -16/+2@ aplardi
It's a reply, not an essay - Four20, on 10/12/2007, -19/+4simply because lost was supposed to be no longer than 3 seasons. and the execs say no way they will drop a hit show, so they'll stretch the plot as thin as can be. . .is good enough reason for me to not watch a show that i know will only progress poorly
