- sjbdallas, on 02/23/2009, -3/+68It's OK so far. Not fantastic yet, but OK. I'll give it a few more episodes before I give up.
- RetlawST, on 02/23/2009, -2/+43First episode was meh, but the second episode was actually pretty good. I wouldn't say it was groundbreaking, but I was entertained and happy it had some meat to it.
Not quite sure why there are so many haters, considering the first episode or two of Fringe were much worse imo, but the show grew into its own quite nicely. - MalaysianMafia, on 02/23/2009, -4/+44So about 2 episodes after it gets canceled? Lets just be fair here, Friday night is where shows go to die...
- d2002, on 02/23/2009, -1/+38"Beyond that... I've seen 16 year a old girl drop a grown man and have him cry out in pain fast enough that if I had blinked I would have missed it..."
Yeah, dating can be pretty brutal sometimes. - Barnum, on 02/23/2009, -6/+41Really? It'll start getting good in Episode 6?
You know when a show should start getting good? Episode 1. - cmuska902, on 02/22/2009, -36/+71I'm pretty sure for this show to be awesome it would require a new cast, storyline, title, plot, and airtime. Or full frontal nudity.
- d2002, on 02/22/2009, -4/+36Full frontal nudity can improve any series.
I totally respect that Whedon's stuff isn't for everyone. My submission was directed more at Whedon fans who didn't think Dollhouse lived up to the standards of Buffy/Angel/Firefly. All I'm saying is, if you're a slightly disappointed Whedon fan, give the show a chance.
But if you've never liked any of Whedon's shows, then yeah, Dollhouse will never be awesome for you.
P.S. Agree on the title. People are already calling it Dullhouse on Twitter. =) - evodevo1, on 02/23/2009, -1/+32Count Dushku frontal nudity!!!
- MuntrealCanada, on 02/23/2009, -7/+37I think the show is awesome now!
- MalaysianMafia, on 02/23/2009, -3/+28yeah, cause your average BSG fan has something else to do on a Friday night....
The Sci Fi channel doesn't exactly have comparable timeslots to network TV... - wolferz, on 02/23/2009, -1/+23yeah cause we all know how badly BSG has been doing.
- groo68, on 02/23/2009, -0/+21I think the second episode was good, and gave me much more hope for the show than the first one. I think cmuska still wanted joss whedon as they didn't include writer in the changes. and knowing joss whedon they probably will have full frontal nudity, even with the two episodes out he hasn't really needed a costume department for a good 10% of the show.
But it shouldn't be on fox. The people at fox are experts at ruining the best shows, but let the bad ones run amok. - N1tro, on 02/23/2009, -0/+18hehe, someone is getting the internet and TV mixed up...
- NorrisOBE, on 02/23/2009, -1/+18And by awesome you meant by going naked right Eliza?
- wolferz, on 02/23/2009, -8/+23You've never taken martial arts have you?
One of the keys to martial arts is how it levels the playing field a great deal between men and women. Martial arts is not the "ninja arts" which were about killing and assassination. Martial arts are about defense against stronger, and very often larger, opponents. In fact... most of the techniques you learn are centered around using smaller size to your your advantage and turning an attackers larger size and more aggressive movements against them.
And before you say it makes men that much more "powerful" too... no actually it doesn't. Larger size limits ones ability to use martial arts effectively.
Beyond that... I've seen 16 year a old girl drop a grown man and have him cry out in pain fast enough that if I had blinked I would have missed it, her foot on his back and his arm twisted in ways it wasn't meant to go... you don't have to believe me... I'm sure youtube is over flowing with reference material.
That said... I dun watch the series but I'm guessing martial arts are involved... all of the Whedon chick-beats-up-guys series are centered around them. - kinnetick, on 02/23/2009, -1/+15you're the reason a lot of TV sucks, and that many good shows get cancelled. some pilots get made with a really great premise, then once that's solved they have nowhere to go. on the other hand, if there isn't enough shallow bs to get the initial ratings within a couple episodes a possibly great show gets cancelled.
a lot of the best shows out there have taken some time to become the best. time for a longer attention span. - SpectreFire, on 02/23/2009, -1/+13Too bad FOX is probably going to cancel it. Let's face it, Dollhouse did abysmally in ratings. 4.7 million viewers for its premiere, and it lost 500,000 viewers the second episode.
That's not good. That's not good at all. And don't blame it on Friday's "graveyard" slot. CBS does amazing on Friday, having 3 shows back to back, Ghost Whisperer, Flashpoint and Numb3rs steadying on the 10 million mark every week.
Whedon belongs on cable. His core fanbase will follow him anywhere, Dollhouse would've probably still have gotten around the 5 million mark on cable, but at least there, 5 million is worth a hell of a lot. - rblancarte, on 02/23/2009, -1/+13Will it make it to episode 6?
- bretto, on 02/23/2009, -1/+12I thought episode 2 was ok. I'm looking forward to seeing what Whedon can do with this series.
- mlfoley, on 02/23/2009, -1/+12You're right, because television viewers are the true arbiters of great programming and genius.
Repeat after me: The masses are asses.
I'm no Whedon worshiper, I am only familiar with a few of his projects, but this sort of logic would make Britney Spears superior to Joan Jett, since she's had more platinum selling albums and top #1 singles. - sugarazor, on 02/23/2009, -0/+10"It gave Dollhouse a terrible lead-in, The Sarah Connor Chronicles"
Sarah Connor > Dollhouse
And that's coming from someone who thinks Buffy is the greatest show in the history of television. - KibibyteBrain, on 02/23/2009, -0/+9Yeah, a 6-episode lead-in seems a bit much. It could end up canceled before then.
- SpectreFire, on 02/23/2009, -2/+11FOX set Dollhouse up to die. It had it compete against CBS on a night where CBS completely controls. It gave Dollhouse a terrible lead-in, The Sarah Connor Chronicles, which will not survive its second season. What FOX should've done, was have one of their big hits as a lead-in for Dollhouse. Either House or American Idol. It doesn't matter which, as long as they gave Dollhouse an audience to try and retain. Lead-ins work. House was the lead-in for Fringe, and it saved what's really just a mediocre show, House gave Fringe the enougn audience to propel it over the 10 million mark. The mentalist is another great example. It's lead-in is NCIS, which has a huge audience. And now the Mentalist is holding more viewers than its lead-in, 18-*****-million viewers. Hell, it's even clawing at CSI's massive audience base.
- wolferz, on 02/23/2009, -0/+9ok... I'm starting to sound like a fanboy but uhm... BSG again. You can't understand the 4th season without having seen most of seasons 1-3.
And then there is firefly... and lost... and uhm... yeah pretty much all the top shelf tv out there right now. - Tyrghast, on 02/23/2009, -2/+10The only season of Firefly was intentionally shown out of sequence to make sure Fox could use people like you as an excuse to cancel the show.
- zip000, on 02/23/2009, -0/+8I thought the second episode was a lot better than the first one...I just feel like a series should start off with a bang and really grab you. Dollhouse seemed to start off with a random mid-second season level episode instead.
You can say the same thing about Fringe...only in like the last few episodes of Fringe have I really started to get interested in what is going on. I hope Dollhouse 1) get's better and 2) lasts...if only because I love seeing the Mutant Enemy monster on TV again. - inactive, on 02/23/2009, -1/+9Lay off the pipe
- sugarazor, on 02/23/2009, -0/+8Eh, Buffy didn't get good until season 2 and wound up staying on for seven seasons total.
- groo68, on 02/23/2009, -0/+8And besides, in buffy(another case that matches your description) she had super powers.
- igothack, on 02/23/2009, -0/+7@ d2002 I didnt know fox had the power to kill firefox.
- Thumper13, on 02/23/2009, -4/+11First episode was rough. Second was better. If it can continue to get better then I will be hooked. That said, Dushku sucks, so if she dies then I think the show really will get going.
I like seeing a couple BSG guys in there. Helo and Romo(Badger for you Firefly folk.) - matriculated, on 02/23/2009, -0/+7Too bad the ratings are down already. Did anyone else think this 2nd episode would have worked better as the first?
- odigity, on 02/23/2009, -0/+7Dude. Joss Whedon is the greatest serialized cinematic storyteller of our generation. Neither Fox's tragic business antics nor the retardation of the viewing population has any bearing on this fact.
- mlfoley, on 02/23/2009, -0/+6She can beat me up any day.
- Risingashes, on 02/23/2009, -0/+6There are plenty of series of Law and Order nowadays- how about you go watch that and leave the number of creative shows alone?
- Shogi, on 02/23/2009, -1/+7It's not about size, it's about what you do with what you've got.
- Risingashes, on 02/23/2009, -0/+6@lowtolerance: The 2nd episode is leaps and bounds ahead of the first.
No guarantee that you'll like it, but if you run out of things to watch/read you might want to give it a go.
@kinnetick: I'd go with the fact ratings are determined by an outdated system, execs have lost touch with reality, and the fact that viewing demographics are slanted against innovation and creativity due to the aging western population.
People who damn shows too quickly is a very insignificant contributor compared to any of the above, in my opinion anyway. - bjs3171, on 02/23/2009, -0/+6i'm baffled by that. without dvr, i'd never catch it.
- DownIsTheNewUp, on 02/23/2009, -0/+6Oh damn, I forgot to watch this on Friday. Thank God for online viewing.
Saw the first episode, and I liked it. The show definitely has promise. - fremeer, on 02/23/2009, -1/+7umm is that why there are weight divisions and different sections for men women in competitive level martial arts. A person practiced in a martial arts might be more effective then some1 who is physically bigger but not practised but in the end it does come down to a high level of physical ability. Put it this way nearly all martial artists are better fighters if they bigger and taller, some of the moves become useless for them because they dont need to account for being the smaller person.
So yes a black belt chick can probably kick the arse of most people but vs a black belt guy unless she gets lucky she will dropped like bricks. - odigity, on 02/23/2009, -0/+5Given that it was Joss's first time doing his own show, and that he was practically inventing a genre, and had almost no budget, and the first season is when a show tries to find it's rhythm, season 1 was as good as could have been expected. Not compared to later seasons, of course, but it still had great writing and some memorable episodes.
- chrisbarr, on 02/23/2009, -1/+6Compare that to the first episode of LOST - I was hooked immediately. Now I've watched 2 entire episodes of Dollhouse and I just really don't care.
- spiralspirit, on 02/23/2009, -3/+8The first episode should have been so different.
They could have done so many things to entice. The one thing they should not have done was take away ALL the mystery of the show. Between the advertising and the first episode I pretty much know Echo's entire past. They only kept one tantalizing secret with the "make a difference" part.
They should have slowly unwound her history, relating it to things that occur to her. Instead we got an infodump. those are never fun. - dlan4327, on 02/23/2009, -1/+6I haven't seen dollhouse but I'm a big fan of Whedon. I might give it a go.
- Remelox, on 02/23/2009, -0/+5The second episode was the first until the network came along. They made some changes so that some of it ended up in the new first episode and they replace that with new stuff.
- Murdats, on 02/23/2009, -0/+5they are probably trying to not do anything too special to avoid being cancelled.
- STKD, on 02/23/2009, -0/+4Joss had nothing to do with Alien 3, and assuming you mistyped, there was far from any butt kicking anywhere in Alien Ressurection. Beyond that you have character traits. River didn't have superpowers, her mind was ***** with to create the equivalent of a very well trained soldier. Echo has no powers and if you think otherwise you really have missed the entire point of the show.
- Murdats, on 02/23/2009, -1/+5everything should be mass market, lowest denominator drivel right? anything that fills a niche is worthless and garbage right?
- MakanGuru, on 02/23/2009, -0/+4and by episode 6, fox will move it into some crappy ass timeslot against some really highly rated TV show o another network. Then once the ratings again fail to materialize decide to cancel it.
sound familiar? - slickwatson, on 02/23/2009, -0/+4she's the one producing it... she should beat up herself... or just have chris brown do it...
