- scrumpy, on 02/07/2008, -6/+62I really can't see the difference between HD and SD on my 15" B/W. I hate living in Kazakhstan. My TV looks like wizard's sleeve. Thank you US Navy, I'm stuck in hell.
- swordedge, on 02/07/2008, -2/+38quantity does not equal quality.
TBS HD and TNN HD are two examples of disgusting channels cause they are NOT true HD, they are 4x3 channels stretched. The Charmed girls are real women so do NOT need any help to look 30% fatter. If the source is 4x3, then the 16x9 channel should have bars on the side. I consider the practice by people that know better to be abominal. I do not know how many of those HD channels are the same but they, in my humble opinion, do not count. - coopaloop, on 02/07/2008, -0/+19Looking at the lists of HD channels carried by Direc TV and Dish just makes me mad I'm stuck with Time Warner. I literally receive local channels, ESPN and ESPN2, TNT TBS and Discovery HD. nothing else.
- whataboutdave, on 02/07/2008, -1/+16Everyone knows that satellite has by far the better selection of digital and HD.
- lohphat, on 02/07/2008, -0/+13The number of HD channels does not matter if the company turns up the compression so high to squeeze more channels in so that the color rendering looks horrendous. If you can see color banding on HD channels you've been had.
- zmjone2992, on 02/07/2008, -1/+13Welcome to the suck
- shaka776, on 02/07/2008, -1/+11I have DishNetwork, and I am more than satisfied with the amount of HD programming... I think they provide a good service. Now if I could just get my external USB storage device to work, I would be all set.
- heiroglyph, on 02/07/2008, -0/+10I can barely tell the difference between HD and SD on Time Warner, plus the lip sync is frequently so far off that my kids even notice.
The macroblocking on anything in motion and reverse fielding on every single Time Warner inserted commercial is just nauseating.
Time Warner HD is complete crap for both quality and quantity.
The only reason I still have TW is because the phone and internet bundle I have makes the cable TV more of a freebie than anything. - koonchu, on 02/07/2008, -4/+13finally, a chance to comment on that SLEAZY DirectTV commercial that has the woman ask you to "PAY CLOSE ATTENTION FOR THE NEXT 60 seconds..." It's a slimy marketing tactic that should probably be reserved for national emergencies or weather warnings.
***** you, DirectTV. - xpose, on 02/07/2008, -1/+10I have directv and would never switch to anything else until they catch up with HD channels. I love my history HD, Discovery HD, and National Geographic HD. Most of the other ones don't have all three. Not to mention it has NFL Sunday Ticket. Why would I ever switch?
- pixelbender, on 02/07/2008, -1/+9Meh, 7 HD channels (and their subs) OTA for FREE FTW! ;)
- fzammetti, on 02/07/2008, -1/+9*****, I was a happy DishNetwork customer until a second ago: DirecTV has SciFi HD, and Dish doesn't. Ugh, that pretty much does it, time to switch!
- fujimonster, on 02/07/2008, -0/+8No cable, sat, etc offer 1080p--- to much bandwidth.. Your only going to see that with hdvd/blueray/etc.
- matthewf01, on 02/07/2008, -0/+8Fiddling with rabbit-ears in 2008 makes me feel like I've some how un-evolved.... but once you can tune in, it feels like you're somehow cheating the system :)
- fadetoone, on 02/07/2008, -0/+7I love mine. Internet is speedy and very rarely goes offline (***** you, Charter). TV looks great, and I've heard the quality beats sat, but definitely could use a few more HD channels.
- Spanq, on 02/07/2008, -3/+10Does it matter? Have you watched HD programming? It's apparently very hip for each channel to play the garbage 10 times a day. They should call A&E HD the CSI: Miami Channel and TNT HD the Law & Order Network.
- aywwts4, on 02/07/2008, -2/+9My grandfather gets a few HD channels from his cable provider on his huge plasma TV at first everything looked like a blurry ***** mess, So I looked in the back and saw that the cable company hooked up his "Digital HD Package" with a single, incredibly cheap looking yellow RCA cable.
So I ordered a hdmi cable from monoprice, it came in a couple of days, We plugged it in and the blurry ***** became crisp pixilated *****, it looked like watching video on dialup in the late 90s, pixilated, trailing lines, when people blinked there eyelids moved but the texture didn't change, it looked like swarms of nats were trailing them when they moved their heads, and everyone's lips looked like fuzz. and when things faded out, it was like the screen exploded.
It was so bad I thought his TV was defective, but a quick hookup to some other sources proved that wrong.
Number of channels with 720 or 1080 lines of resolution is a worthless metric, if you don't also count things like bitrate and compression into the mix.
This provider might charge for "30 HD channels" but they deliver none. - HappyScrappy, on 02/07/2008, -0/+6Agreed. OTA is awesome. Best deal on the market, a total killer for retirees on a limited budget. Buy an antenna once and get 7 channels of perfect digital reception (it's more like 20 here if you count SD channels) for the low, low price of $0 a month.
- tidejwe, on 02/07/2008, -1/+7What are you talking about? The regular rate for Choice package is $49.99/mo, then $9.99 for HD = $59.98 for like 150 channels plus locals and the few extra HD channels that wouldn't have been available in Standard definition otherwise. BTW, the prices are going up next month $3...of course every provider is going up in price soon... Wow, $63 for the most BASIC HD package with 160 channels on one TV...even more for multiple TVs...crazy...it's no wonder so many people just torrent the shows or watch on the network websites nowadays.
- swordedge, on 02/07/2008, -0/+6I see them when I flip past them. That is how I know about Charmed (on at least 2 hours a day, possibly more) What more, there IS a 16x9 version of Charmed available but they don't use it.
- Vector713, on 02/07/2008, -0/+6How much do you charge for your superior potassium?
- Psythik, on 02/07/2008, -0/+6Well I, for one, am quite satisfied with DTV's HD lineup so far. In fact, I watch so many programs in HD, that I sometimes forget what SD looks like. I guess the amount of HD programming you see depends on what you're into watching. Most of my TV time is spent on Discovery, Nat Geo, MHD, local prime time shows, and sports events -- all which are shown in HD.
- DinosWillDie13, on 02/07/2008, -0/+5I'm shopping and just need some opinions...
Who has FiOS internet and tv and how has it been treating them? - antdude, on 02/07/2008, -1/+6Who watches TBS and TNN? :P
- Spero, on 02/07/2008, -2/+7If you're in the middle east, you can forget about the fiber.
- Sheff, on 02/07/2008, -0/+4Voom, when it was it's own company, had SciFi HD among others. I liked Voom better before they got shut down and sold to Dish
- Cerebral, on 02/07/2008, -1/+5Who the hell wants CNN HD? Discovery HD, Food Network HD, Football and a few shows like Lost and Heroes is all I watch.
- Birdoftruth, on 02/07/2008, -0/+4 same here my friend. Do you got Bright house?
- tibbon, on 02/07/2008, -1/+5The better question should instead be where lies the best overall HD programming. I have a 1080p screen and no cable/sat of any sort piping in content right now. Everything I watch is downloaded or DVDs. I'm about to buy a PS3 as a Bluray player. From what I've heard and seen very few of them offer decent 1080p content at all. Also, compare it against price. I don't want to pay $200/month for cable that has "more HD" channels. My cable (not plugged in at all) right now is half spanish speaking channels, and half QVC. Who wants that?
- thestaton, on 02/07/2008, -0/+4same here. TWC is a joke.
- GOVStooge, on 02/07/2008, -0/+3Except DirecTV is actually adding satellites to provide more HD content. The MPEG4 compression they use provides a great picture. For me they also offer the HD channels that the cable companies in San Diego just haven't provided, namely SciFi and USA. Add to that their MUCH improved DVR (granted it's not Tivo but it's leaps and bounds superior to those offered by Cox and TimeWarner)
- thestaton, on 02/07/2008, -0/+3Average out TimeWarner Cables if you get a chance. I'm going to guess the average for them is around 8 :(
- Vic333, on 02/07/2008, -0/+3OTA is the best HD you can get. Mine is crisp and clear and better quality than any service I can actually pay for in my area.
- inactive, on 02/07/2008, -0/+3TBSHD and TNTHD might be "stretched", but the picture quality is noticeably better than if I flip to the non-HD TBS/TNT.
- Psythik, on 02/07/2008, -0/+3Actually, you can get DirecTV's HD package (which, IMO, is better than Dish's. Trust me, I've had both) for about $190 less than that. Plus, a lot, if not most, HD content is broadcast in 1080i, which can be deinterlaced into 1080p. I don't think any television networks broadcast in full 1080p yet...
- inactive, on 02/07/2008, -0/+3fuji's right, 1080i is the best I can get on any cable/satellite provider. But $200? DirecTV with HD and the extra sports package is only ~$90 p/mo.
- Wrabbit26, on 02/07/2008, -0/+3TNN (The Nashville Network ====> The National Network) is now Spike
- bill7693, on 02/07/2008, -0/+3We have Comcast here, and the so-called "HD" on demand content is not actually HD. It comes out of my box as a 480p signal. 95% of it is total crap anyway, but it still pisses me off that they lie in their commercials. That being said, the actual HD channels generally look pretty good, with only occasional compression artifacts showing up. If I could get Sci-Fi and my regional sports networks in HD and a DVR with more than 12 hours of capacity, I'd be pretty satisfied overall.
I'm also completely baffled by Comcast's inability to offer ESPN Classic on any of their packages in my market, but that's not relevant to this discussion. - inactive, on 02/07/2008, -0/+3FiOS TV is pretty amazing. The bandwidth available is a lot higher than any of the cable, satellite, or UVerse. It is also full HD and not 1440x1080 like Sat
- SpoonDogSVT, on 02/07/2008, -0/+3I would like to know which provider will sell me an HD-only plan for a lower price? I don't want the whole huge package I'm currently required to buy from everyone, just the HD channels and a lower price.
Comcast cable pricing is going up next month in the Portland area, so we're heading the OTA + AppleTV route instead. - StuTheMeatMan, on 02/07/2008, -1/+4Oh you've seen Borat? Oh awesome, me too!! Thanks so much for quoting it. It was funny when he said it in the movie, but it's even funnier seeing you type it!
- bdbr, on 02/07/2008, -0/+2Aren't the episodes of BSG on UHD old ones, though (even during the season)?
- Nlewis4, on 02/07/2008, -0/+2So far my first experience with HD has been through a local cable provider and I have been very pleased with the quality of the HD as well as the 40+ HD channels. I haven't compared it to Satellite but I really enjoy watching tv without having to worry about weather knocking it out. Does satellite still cut out when it's raining moderately hard?
- Soulhuntre, on 02/07/2008, -0/+2I'm running FIOS 20/20 and also using it for TV and voice. Frankly, it kicks ass.
Most interestingly the tech support folks speak English well and don;t insist on reading from a checklist script if you call them. Even at 3am on a Saturday you can get someone who actually knows whats going on and won't treat you like an idiot. - inactive, on 02/07/2008, -0/+2some TBS and TNT programming is Native HD however, the MLB Playoffs, the NBA, Law and Order, and some movies.
- bemenaker, on 02/07/2008, -0/+2Direct's quality BURIES TWC's HD. I had my TWC box for a week after getting my Direct installed, and it was a night and day difference between them.
- HappyScrappy, on 02/07/2008, -0/+2It's not DISH or Comcast, it's DirecTV. Only DISH comes close in channel count, and they include BS Voom-style channels.
- clickwir, on 02/07/2008, -1/+3DirectTV sounds nice, great selection... Until you try to add the $9.99 HD package to the regular Choice package that is $44.99. Some how $44.99 + 9.99 = 59.99 in DirectTV math. Suddenly, it's no cheaper than my Comcast.
- GOVStooge, on 02/07/2008, -0/+2you're watching the wrong HD channels
- bot001220, on 02/07/2008, -0/+2I guess they want you to buy the DVD box set.
