- IphtashuFitz, on 01/09/2009, -0/+22Place your bets as to which episode will first have a contestant wearing a Digg t-shirt.
- OnSolThree, on 01/09/2009, -0/+9This is the perfect example of the sort of stuff that should be on the Science and Discovery Channels. Get rid of the stupid Bermuda Triangle and UFO ***** and keep the real science!
- moodley, on 01/08/2009, -1/+10Sweet, I'm going to tear that show up... as long as they don't drop a Grand Piano on me Bugs Bunny style
- poppyrich, on 01/09/2009, -0/+7You're welcome...
- ChayesFSS, on 01/09/2009, -0/+6*Casting will take place in LA but Producer's will consider contestants from other states if they are the right fit.
- sidizzle, on 01/09/2009, -0/+6Sounds like another Monster Garage or Junkyard Wars show to me. Sign me up.
- GregFD3S, on 01/09/2009, -0/+5I am already addicted to this channel, please don't make it any worse.
- Zarokima, on 01/09/2009, -0/+5It's 20 (positive, not negative). I'm guessing you're on the right track, you're just subtracting the finishing point from the starting point rather than the start from the finish. Also, the sign of displacement depends on the direction of motion (relative from starting to final position), which in this case is in the positive direction, so displacement is positive.
Legal notice: By reading and accepting the above as the answer to your physics problem you relinquish your soul to the person known at the time of this posting on Digg as Zarokima, for all intents and purposes, in perpetuity, throughout the universe in places known and unknown, and in other dimensions. - infernal6, on 01/09/2009, -3/+6I have a completely irrelevant question to ask of diggers. I just started my first physics class today and my prof. doesnt like to give either information on how to do problems or answers. This is the question I have to figure out:
"Fred starts at a point -15 miles from the origin. He stands still for 1 second. From 1-3 seconds he moves from the origin. From 3-7 he moves towards the origin. He comes to rest at a distance of 5m from the origin. Draw a graph, and find the Displacement."
I have made a graph, though I cant decide whether the answer is -10 or -20.
Bury me if you want. I just know we have some physics experts on here :) - eastcoast1978, on 01/09/2009, -1/+4I'd watch.
- mkmega, on 01/09/2009, -0/+3Less pseudoscience and more science - huzzah!
- MLGLies, on 01/08/2009, -0/+3Sounds awesome. Wish I had the proficiency in any of those skills to apply.
- globalthreat, on 01/09/2009, -0/+2Good to see that some big companies are still hiring.
- nonstop87, on 01/09/2009, -0/+2This might help.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Displacement_(vector)
From my understanding the answer is -20 or 20 but don't take my word for it since I'm only a high school Physics student and struggle with this cause my teacher SUCKS. - infernal6, on 01/09/2009, -0/+2I haven't bought my physics book yet :(
And I know one of these is the right answer, probably -20, I just don't fully get the concept of why it is that over the other. - Snoogs, on 01/12/2009, -0/+1Your displacement is your total change in distance from start to finish... you started at -15, ended at +5. The answer is 20.
Also, I agree with cryonix, Fred would be liquefied. No solving that problem till you get to Quantum. - Zarokima, on 01/09/2009, -0/+1Yeah, that's exactly right, infernal.
- infernal6, on 01/09/2009, -0/+1I get the problem now though. The negative was throwing me off, but I understand the reasoning. Thanks to all for the help.
Also, I guess it was meters. I must have copied incorrectly.
My hypothesis is that the negative is only relevant to the final calculation of displacement, and is not relevant, at least in the manner I was thinking to the x-axis of the graph. Therefor, move backwards and the change is negative, forward is positive. So moving from point -25 to -22 would yield a displacement of 3, while 25 to 22 would yield -3. Current negative or positive of starting point is irrelevant beyond calculation.
Glad thats solved. - infernal6, on 01/09/2009, -0/+1Okay. I guess I will just have to accept the basic method of solving this as finish - start, despite it not making complete sense to me at the moment.
Btw, you can have my soul as far as i'm concerned. Not sure you can do anything with it though :) - Nature1, on 01/09/2009, -0/+1Better start now...
- Zarokima, on 01/09/2009, -0/+1He most likely meant meters (since that's what's used for the final position and makes much more sense). Also, there's no way to calculate Fred's position at any point during his travels since it never gives any indication of speed, and since it doesn't say his speed is constant you can't assume that.

I'm in vote for me!! - moodley, on 01/09/2009, -0/+1it's a cheat that's your creamer is "powered"
... now if you could do it with the "powdered" stuff, I'd be impressed - Abomonog, on 01/09/2009, -0/+1I know how to make a bomb out of powered non dairy creamer. Does that make me qualified?
P.S. The bomb doesn't go boom but it does produce one hell of a fireball. - somaddict, on 01/09/2009, -0/+1"All of these are possible and more, if you just imagineer it!"
- Snoogs, on 01/12/2009, -0/+1I'll take the 'null set'... The people winning these contests are actually in their garage cutting their hands on a rusty catalytic converter, rather than typing on their laptop, digging another xkcd and watching Mythbusters in the background. (guilty as charged... damn)
- Snoogs, on 01/12/2009, -0/+1You deserve lots of diggs... UFO's and retarded southerners on meth are not science.
- markperia, on 01/09/2009, -0/+1Holy *****! time to make a vid.
- cryonix, on 01/09/2009, -1/+1I'm not going to pretend anymore that I know what I'm talking about. Who am I give homework advice over the Internet, especially physics. I just hope he figures it out on his own... much more satisfying.
- cryonix, on 01/09/2009, -1/+1I got -25 for his distance from origin at the 3 sec mark. then he travels 20 miles during the 3-7 time frame. This is assuming that when he travels he travels at a constant speed and reaches that speed instantly. Already we're talking Massive G forces. The speed he is moving in both directions is 24,000(23999.999....) miles per hour!!! So one could assume that the amount of G forces upon Fred would be fatal. So your answer is Fred's Corpse would have a displacement of 20, while braking the sound barrier multiple times.
edit: I misread the units... so forget the whole thing. but still i had fun writing this and will leave it as is. but yeah your answer is still 20 since he was moving toward the origin. - DickyT83, on 01/09/2009, -1/+1I'll put 20 on the first ep.
- MrVeal, on 01/09/2009, -0/+0isn't that wtf they made Junkyard Wars for?
They are suffering from the MTV effect... same ***** different name. - Tracon, on 01/09/2009, -1/+1I'm not doing your homework for you.
- inactive, on 01/09/2009, -1/+0Most paranoid show on the air when it comes to trying to defend their ideologies.
- poppyrich, on 01/09/2009, -2/+1Buzzkill!!
- johnnylovitz, on 01/09/2009, -12/+7hey do me a favor and bury this comment a lot please
