- dylio, on 01/31/2009, -11/+163***** yeah, Bill Hicks. Dugg for one of the greatest comedians and thinkers of his age.
“I smoke. If this bothers anyone, I suggest you look around at the world in which we live and shut your *****' mouth.”
- Bill Hicks
"The world is like a ride in an amusement park. And when you choose to go on it you think it's real because that's how powerful our minds are. And the ride goes up and down and round and round. It has thrills and chills and it's very brightly coloured and it's very loud and it's fun, for a while. Some people have been on the ride for a long time and they begin to question: "Is this real, or is this just a ride?" And other people have remembered, and they come back to us, they say, "Hey, don't worry, don't be afraid, ever, because this is just a ride." And we kill those people."

Now I just need to read the article.
Edit: whoa... 39 pages? - val679, on 01/31/2009, -1/+86http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=VBC1dKGO2_A

- iammzac, on 01/31/2009, -1/+44I kind of missed the show because this went on the frontpage at 1:42am EST after Letterman was on.
- doublefelix, on 01/31/2009, -4/+41That's a long time coming.
- DirtPile, on 01/31/2009, -1/+34Hey, uh, GOT ANY GUM??!!
- coolDataQQQQ, on 01/31/2009, -7/+40Why was it banned
- JoeB4ever, on 01/31/2009, -0/+28I love how you get dugg down instead of someone being nice enough to answer your question.
The article really doesn't explain why it was banned. My assumption is because it was to racy. - inkswamp, on 01/31/2009, -3/+30Amazing how relevant Bill still is even after all these years. Need evidence?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6F7Q7BkAbCk - arizonabay, on 01/31/2009, -1/+27You know, I just watched the show here on the west coast and I feel like a bit of a tit. Dave showed a lot of class tonight, with the admission that he cut the bit, the apology for it, and making an attempt to rectify that mistake by having Bill's mother on the show to talk about Bill's life as well as showing the censored bit.
Regardless of my opinion of the quality of Dave's show over the past 12 or so years, he's truly a class act, which is rare in any form of public life. - pepspaa, on 01/31/2009, -2/+27Thanks, that tells us nothing.
- nowhereelse, on 01/31/2009, -6/+30"By the way, if anyone here is in advertising or marketing, kill yourself. Thank you, thank you. Just a little thought. I'm just trying to plant seeds. Maybe one day they'll take root. I don't know. You try. You do what you can. Kill yourselves. Seriously though, if you are, do. No really, there's no rationalisation for what you do, and you are Satan's little helpers, OK? Kill yourselves, seriously. You're the ruiner of all things good. Seriously, no, this is not a joke. "There's gonna be a joke coming..." There's no ***** joke coming, you are Satan's spawn, filling the world with bile and garbage, you are ***** and you are ***** us, kill yourselves, it's the only way to save your ***** soul. Kill yourself, kill yourself, kill yourself now. Now, back to the show."
- slyzxx, on 01/31/2009, -3/+27" Hicks expressed his feelings of betrayal in a hand-written, 39-page letter to John Lahr of The New Yorker."
Wow 1 page away from 40 but seriously what i want to read that letter must have been some serious bashing towards CBS - aufte, on 01/31/2009, -1/+24Send in Vanilla Ice.
- sparf, on 01/31/2009, -2/+21Another dead hero.
- iLEZ, on 01/31/2009, -1/+19Ok, you are right pepspaa, i'll elaborate. The way i remember it is that the Late show had some right wing anti-abortion-group ads running at this time and Letterman and his crew did not want to upset their sponsors by having mr Hicks publicly murder them on their show. For more info, turn to the internet.
I'm off for pizza! - inactive, on 01/31/2009, -2/+20Bill was a bad mother *****.
- Jareth86, on 01/31/2009, -2/+19I hate CBS's video steaming. The video on letterman's website won't play in any browser.

- iLEZ, on 01/31/2009, -6/+21From the wikipedia article:
Censored
On October 1, 1993, about five months before his death, Hicks was scheduled to appear on The Late Show with David Letterman for the twelfth time, but his entire performance was removed from the broadcast - the only occasion, up to that point, in which a comedian's entire routine had been cut after taping. Both the show's producers and CBS denied responsibility. Hicks expressed his feelings of betrayal in a hand-written, 39-page letter to John Lahr of The New Yorker.[8] Although Letterman later expressed regret at the way Hicks had been handled, he did not appear on the show again. The full account of this incident was featured in a New Yorker profile by Lahr. This profile was later published as a chapter in John Lahr's book, Light Fantastic.[9]
Mary Hicks appeared on the Friday, January 30, 2009 The Late Show. Letterman played Hicks' routine in its entirety.[10] Letterman took full responsibility for the original censorship, apologized to Mary Hicks, Bill's mother, and declared he didn't know what he had been thinking when he pulled the routine from the original show. - inactive, on 01/31/2009, -6/+19that's what she said
- inactive, on 01/31/2009, -0/+12my first thought was, holy *****... 39 pages?!?
But then I realize this is Hicks we are talking about. That dude could rant like no other. - inactive, on 01/31/2009, -1/+12Ack! Once again one of Alex Jones minions has figured out our diabolical plan! Back to the Illuminati bat cave!
- wsteele, on 01/31/2009, -2/+13Man do I miss him.
- arizonabay, on 01/31/2009, -0/+11Just to let you know, half of your post was on its way to making a reasonable argument. Then you went and drove it off the deep end. I'll leave you to decide where between "I realize Hicks has some fans here" and "...before he died and went to hell" you went wrong,
- inkswamp, on 01/31/2009, -4/+15People like you are exactly the reason we still need Bill Hicks to this very day.
- bobsbones, on 01/31/2009, -1/+12Which softcock ignoramus buried your comment?
Probably Vanilla Ice is a Digg user. - SteveIsTheDude, on 01/31/2009, -0/+10Your link is *****... To hear Bill Hicks on Howard Stern, go here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Whcc8lO9fao
- Tyshpix, on 01/31/2009, -3/+13Props to a man who believes in true freedom of speech.
- Unexploded, on 01/31/2009, -0/+9What you're seeing on letterman, isn't Hicks, it's Hicks-lite and lobotomized.
They'd make him edit the hell out of his act, perform it for standards and practices like some kind of trained monkey, and then edit it some more---until they felt it was suitable for their fictional target audience.
In truth, they were afraid of pissing off their advertising sponsors. You want real Hicks, download all his comedy albums. Rant in E-minor is a classic, but they're all good.
"Think of me as Chomsky with dick jokes." - Bill Hicks - SanTe, on 01/31/2009, -0/+9@HypocriteDigg:
You need to spend some more time with Bill's work before drawing such a way off the mark conclusion. Bill *hated* neocons, and hyprocrites. In fact, there should be a picture of Bill in the dictionary next to "progressive." He was about as tolerant and open-minded as the human race can get. His entire career was based around his frustration over how so much of the human race doesn't get it and wastes so much time and energy on negative, stupid ***** and bad taste in general. - jasonbalmforth, on 01/31/2009, -8/+17Hopefully Davids other guests will include Joey from the show Blossom and Patrick Duffy. Yes...tonight's the night!
- Jeeum, on 01/31/2009, -2/+11No, but you're the only one that came in here to say it.

my first paragraph will talk about the contents of my paper. in this paper i will talk about several things pertaining to the subject which is the topic i am writing about. i am a tapeworm and i live in a small little rabbit and i hope he does not excrement me one day because i like rabbit meats and if i eat not too much at a time i also have a rabbit vehicle. i am a tapeworm and i love being alife in my rabbit friend and i want to marry my rabbit friend but he sin't ready for commitment and he cannot hear me because my voice is meek. - Ghoztt, on 01/31/2009, -2/+10...But don't worry... this is all just a dream....
- inactive, on 01/31/2009, -6/+14Bill Hicks = Best Of All Time.
- Bigmodirty, on 01/31/2009, -2/+10Overkill? this would have been his last performance to a national audience, I really don't think it's overkill at all. Read up on why it got banned, watch some of his stand up.
Hicks is a legend. - HtomSirveaux, on 01/31/2009, -1/+9Oh, ***** you mbraynard, you sucker of Satan's *****. I bet you like New Kids On the Block.
- andeh37, on 01/31/2009, -6/+13Finally Letterman does the right thing.

" 'oh well the the esprit de corps will be affected, and we are such a morale...' uh excuse me, AREN'T CHA ALL ***** HIRED KILLLERS??? SHUT UP!!....'i don't want any gay people around me when i'm killing kids' "
too many other great quotes to list here.
Thanks Bill, you are missed. - raydeen, on 01/31/2009, -0/+7<insert name here>'s mother.
- Vash_aka_TK, on 01/31/2009, -0/+7Um..you do realize that his jokes have to get approved by the producers before he can do the set right? He was told they were approved of, and after he did the show they then told him they wouldn't air it. You're the stupid one for not being able to recognize how badly CBS censors comics. Take Orny Adams for instance, in the documentary comedian he wasn't even allowed to use the word "lupus" when he made his first Letterman appearance.
Sure it's not about free speech, but why the hell have comics on the show then?
Also like Hicks said, it was an observation mainly. If you can remove yourself from the politics you can realize how right he was. We need a man like him for the current generation. - subsocial, on 01/31/2009, -0/+6The Youtube video attached to the article is an old cable access show interview in which Bill Hicks explained it a bit.
He did a bit where he encourages pro-lifers to lock arms and block cemeteries instead of med clinics. One of Letterman's advertisers was apparently the pro-life campaign at the time. The bit passed review and all that and he was able to do it but apparently someone at CBS pulled it after the fact.
He goes into a bit more detail in the interview but that seems to be the heart of it.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pkptz2YfZik&eur ... - Tenaciousender, on 01/31/2009, -0/+6Children are smarter than any of us. Know how I know that? I don't know one child with a full time job and children.
Childbirth is no more a miracle then eating food and a turd coming out of your ass.
Supreme Court says pornography is anything without artistic merit that causes sexual thoughts, that's their definition, essentially. No artistic merit, causes sexual thoughts. Hmm... Sounds like...every commercial on television, doesn't it? You know, when I see those two twins on that Doublemint commercial? I'm not thinking of gum. I am thinking of chewing, so maybe that's the connection they're trying to make.
No, I don't do drugs anymore, either. But I'll tell you something about drugs. I used to do drugs, but I'll tell you something honestly about drugs, honestly, and I know it's not a very popular idea, you don't hear it very often anymore, but it is the truth: I had a great time doing drugs. Sorry. Never murdered anyone, never robbed anyone, never raped anyone, never beat anyone, never lost a job, a car, a house, a wife or kids, laughed my ass off, and went about my day.
It's just a ride and we can change it any time we want. It's only a choice. No effort, no work, no job, no savings and money, a choice, right now, between fear and love. The eyes of fear want you to put bigger locks on your door, buy guns, close yourself off. The eyes of love instead see all of us as one.
Go back to bed, America, your government has figured out how it all transpired. Go back to bed America, your goverment is in control. Here, here's American Gladiators. Watch this, shut up, go back to bed America, here is American Gladiators, here is 56 channels of it! Watch these pituitary retards bang their ***** skulls together and congratulate you on the living in the land of freedom. Here you go America - you are free to do what well tell you! You are free to do what we tell you!
Here is my final point. About drugs, about alcohol, about pornography and smoking and everything else. What business is it of yours what I do, read, buy, see, say, think, who I *****, what I take into my body - as long as I do not harm another human being on this planet? - inactive, on 01/31/2009, -0/+6You're one of the jesus nutballs he was trying to make a point about. He and we all understand the fact advertising dictates what is aired, you wasted alot of breath there. His point was there are too many people like yourself that are offended by opinion and exert their influence by censoring. If Hicks had the talk show and Letterman did a routine about an Atheist I highly doubt Hicks would be so quick to censor. It is the lack of tolerance in persons who supposedly have faith in a religion that sells itself as tolerant that bothered him. His comedy is based on pointing out hypocrisy...what better example was that.
