When McCain canceled his appearance, he personally called Letterman and told him it was because of the financial crisis, and he was on his way to D.C. His aids told Letterman he was literally rushing to get on a plane.
He lied. He wasn't rushing to D.C., in fact he was in such a non-rush that he was able to do an interview that took up even more time than his appearance on Letterman would have.
